Once, long ago, light and dark existed in balance.

Light brought warmth and breathed life into the world.

Dark brought cold and stole life away from the world.

--------------

It is night here at the edge of the civilized world, and the denizens of Brennan's Landing have long since gone to their rest. Only the a few paltry guards patrol the wooden palisades that mark the edges of the town. They have spent years here, the only problems wildlife coming too close to the town. They expect nothing more troubling, and indeed many go about their duties half-asleep. Tonight will be a night like any other night.

They do not expect the Children of the Dark.

The tribe moves quietly, eyes glinting in the moonlight, watching the sleeping community from the cover of the wood line. It has been many moons since the tribe has gone raiding, many more moons since blood was spilled and slaves were taken. Tonight will be a good night for the tribe. Tonight will be a good offering to Father Dark.

But what tribe of the Children of Dark come this night?

You make your way to the door behind which the knife-ears cower. Their fear is palpable, even past their feeble protections. The shadows gather around you as you call upon your magick in preparation for what is to come. You reach out across the city as well, calling upon your fellow Whispers to help you in your work. Only a few respond, you are an unproven Whisper on your first true raid, but the help is there.

Charisma: Critical Success

The help provided is more than enough. Enough even to allow you to do more than simply shred the ward to pieces. The shadows gathered rip at the ward and push beyond it, shrouding the room beyond in darkness and silence. The knife-ears can see little beyond their own face, all the better for you to strike. The door is locked by conventional means, but it provides little protection against magickal invasion. It is easily forced open with a burst of shadow, and you dart inside as quickly as you can. Your eyes, used to gloom and darkness, easily pick out the two inhabitants of the room. A male stands near the center of the room, a small rod of wood in his hands. His defenses are useless to him now, shrouded in darkness as he is. A female cowers at the back of the room, doing her best to stay quiet and avoid notice. A pointless attempt with your gifts. You smash the male across the face with your fist, ignoring his feeble attempt to stop you with a burst of light that is devoured by the surrounding shadows. He tumbles to the ground with a muted cry, and your dagger is at his throat before he can make another move. This one is the magick user, this one is far more dangerous and deadly. Keeping him alive you would be risk, but a worthy prize all the same.

"No! P-please! D-don't kill him! Let him live! Vel imlore!"

The woman doesn't move from her place at the back of the room, but her voice raised in panic reaches you. She speaks the common tongue, either aware,

Ostensibly knock out the magic user and take it as a slave. Let the sneak waste his prize as he pleases.

Hmm... There are certainly some good options to weigh. What about this?

The knife-ear may prove more impressive, and more useful, if she was captured rather than slain. But we'll need to distract the Sneak with a more tempting target:

"There is a round-eared pig in the next room, with plenty of blood to wet your blade. I wonder how loud you could make it squeal."

This Sneak is erratic, but could be a useful tool to our ends.
>>
No. 960901 ID: d447eb

You smash your fist into the knife-ear's face as hard as you can, the woman whimpering in fear at the sudden violence. Blood pours from his nose and he appears woozy but not truly unconscious. You strike him again and watch as he finally releases his hold on awareness. With a nod of satisfaction you turn your full attention to the Sneak and his unwanted bloodlust.

"These ones are mine, Sneak. There is a round-eared pig in the next room, with plenty of blood to wet your blade. I wonder how loud you could make it squeal."

The Sneak's eyes shift from the female to rest on you, and for a moment you feel the tension that exists when an Urk considers ending another. Then the Sneak backs down, acknowledging your claim, if only for the moment. He turns away and slips further down the hall, followed soon by the sounds of terror being cut short. It seems this Sneak has little interest in prolonging his targets life beyond what is necessary.

You turn your own attention towards the only other conscious individual in the room. The knife-ear remains cowering the the back of the room, and seems to be doing her best to melt into the wall. You consider this with only mild curiosity, you'd always been told knife-ears were the more deadly among the Children of the Light. You wonder if they were wrong, or if these are just pitiful examples of their kind. Either way, they will prove themselves useful or be bartered away for something of more value. There is the matter of what to do with them in the immediate future however, and more importantly how to keep them in check. Perhaps more concerning is the presence of Knife-ears at all, particularly within the confines of some border round-ear town.

In the relative silence that settles over the room, your thoughts also turn to the matter of your vision. This raiding party would be a welcome first step in your journey towards your destiny. But they follow another now

Gorrick Blackblade is a fool, strong, but his... untimely death can be orchestrated in the coming days. He just needs to keep acting like himself and an opportunity will present itself.

But right now we need to make sure that our spoils are not stolen away from us.

Bind the hands of the knife-ears and use the pillow cases to bag their heads. The woman seems smart enough not to fight.

"Best start acting like a round-ear if you want to survive the night."

Scan the room for other valuables that Gorrick would take instead.

We can use the ROD to lead him to Dr.Andris.

Yeah. Lead the Ki-taka to the busted door, maybe with a bunch of workers on the task we can get it open through brute force. Or they have tools to fix the problem? They were able to do work on their translation computer...
If the drone needs to still be stuck to their translation computer to speak to them... can we still see the code in their computer? Let's copy that over too.
If we can't move the drone, attempt a message: "Agreement. That one's human friend is trapped. Room near where this one was first seen. Door is stuck."

Hmm, I wonder if the Director is the one our inner voice is pissed at?

"This is a station wide alert. Members of the Ki-taka race aboard the station have offered their support in dealing with the situation currently affecting the station. Please do not be alarmed at their presence."

Ghost: "Agreement."

*Solaria: The code within their makeshift translator has been copied. I am beginning to analyze it for use in other systems, but it will take some time. I have no estimated completion, primarily due to unfamiliarity with the programming language in question. Or even the base language being used, if I am being entirely honest.

The Ki-taka chatter excitedly once more, Alpha disconnecting cables from the drone. We are cut off from the computer system, effectively preventing us from responding to them, but the updates to the ROD hold. Once the Ki-taka are finished, Alpha once more slows its speech, and the program holds true.

Use a speaker near Alpha to respond: "Yes."
Hopefully they can understand very basic english words.

To Dr. Andris: The Ki-taka are working to open the door now. Alpha is with them.

To Angela: The Ki-taka found the doctor's door, that's all. They're excited to reunite with her.

Use speakers inside space fold lab: "Technician Angela is opening the door, please stand clear."

We're going to have to rebroadcast the previous "station-wide" messages as soon as we can connect to more subsystems. How much time do we have left before life support goes down?
>>

>>960793
We'd best tell Dr. Andris to stand away from the door as well, just in case that acid proves to be a little too effective.

>>960472
Judging from their previous statements, it would be safe to assume that 'Soft' is the Ki-taka term for humans.
But we can't assume that their language has an affirmative statement like English. The closest thing that we can use from their language is repeating their question as a statement.

Say: "Soft beyond." before saying "Yes."

From there we can establish a president for affirmative and negative statements with Alpha.

The room is 10' square and 15' high. Walls are limestone, no less than three feet thick.

One door, an inch of solid iron, 4' wide by 9' high in the exact center of the wall. Locked and barred from outside.

There's a sturdy-looking steel hook mounted in the center of the ceiling, and a mummified goblin corpse (minus digestive tract) in the center of the floor.

I have an enchanted banana peel (not proud of where I had to hide it) with an extradimensional space inside, containing:
-6 gold coins
-4 copper coins
-3 silver coins
-2 flint arrowheads (no shaft or fletching)
-one zinc coin
-imitation half-banana masterfully sculpted out of soft wax
-map of sewers and catacombs of the lost city of Irem
-silk rope, 3/8" diameter, 75 feet long

... Okay. You're not going to like this, but you have the tools you need to construct the ritual components. It's going to be boring and disgusting though.

>Lit Candle
Combine [Mummified Goblin Corpse, Enchanted Banana Peel] with [String from Silk Rope]. Scratch your flint arrowheads on the starmetal nail file to light it on fire.

>Drawstring Bag
Use the [Flint Arrowhead] to cut a small piece of leather out of the [Mummified Goblin Corpse]], then use [String from Silk Rope] to tie it all together. Use [Torn Paper from the Map] to reinforce if needed.

>Zinc coin
The heck did that come from? Did the banana peel interact with one of your coins? Keep it, though; there are alchemy tricks you can do with solid zinc.

Sounds pretty solid, only a few alterations- make the candle out of the wax you have, rather than the peel, and you should probably avoid destroying the map. Leather bag and wax candle to get help does seem like a good place to start.

Is the peel of the Elsewhere banana magical enough to act as a safe handle for the starmetal nail file?
>>
No. 956722 ID: f57349

I've assembled a crude goblin-leather pouch, suitable for basic summoning rituals. Not enough subcutaneous fat for a candle's worth of tallow, though, probably meaning an extended period of starvation. If that's how they treat their own allies... I definitely need to get out of here.

Silk rope reduced to 74 feet. Wax half-banana reduced to wax third-of-a-banana.

Gained small, lumpy, banana-scented candle.

Flint struck against starmetal doesn't produce sparks. I'll need iron or steel to actually light the candle. Or, with the First Scribe's sigil wrought in gold or brass, I could call on miraculous flames... among many other things.

Deliberately damaging such a rare map would be a clear violation of the tenets of my faith.

I can hold the nail file safely, just need to be careful about applying too much force. Wrapping it in banana peel would NOT help, and might risk damaging the (bizarre, shoddy) enchantment keeping that extradimensional space stable.

Steel hook mounted in the center of the ceiling seems like the thing to strike against for sparks then, just be careful with your hands and the file.

As for what to summon, not sure what the limitations are, but priorities seem like First Scribe's Sigil, so if there's a way to conjure a creature that gives access to that, lets do it. Other ideas seem like a creature which would allow you to handle the starmetal file safely, weapons/armor, strategic information gathering, body guards, that sort of thing. Creatures which can give you things, something with it's own magical power to conujure or what have you.

You feel trapped. You try to claw your way out, but you do not have claws. You do not have anything. What would you even be clawing out from? It hurts. You struggle.

It's a little after eight now. You know you won't see anyone outside, but you can't help but pull back the curtains and take a peek anyways.

Just as you thought, nothing. You live out here all alone after all, just the way you like it. The closest thing nearby is the church, but no one there would have any reason to visit you. Same for the townsfolk.

It's perfect, it means you get to practice in private.

Well,if we're going to work on the assumption that some who go through the village will eventually hit The Citadel, maybe we should weave some story, and more importantly, hints into the quest in the village too.
Like have the villagers drop clues about the Slime Princesses if people complete their quest lines, like wwhat kind of treasures they might give, or hints about their powers. Warnings like not to hurt Bloops if they dont want to have a bad time, that kind of thing.
It can serve as both an advertisement and a reward.

We're looking to make this dungeon a step down in difficulty compared to the Citadel, so we want mostly one or two rune creatures, with maybe a 3 rune as a boss/mini-boss. Personally I,think we should make use of those unique runes, Aqua and Aero.

Speaking of, please have Demonologist invert the Aero rune, I suspect we'll get either the equivalent for fire or earth from it.

Second, monster ideas.
Aero: Harpies, flying squirrels, wisps, maybe Chocobos? Kind of hard to pin down just what you'd get using this rune by itself. Maybe just try one and see what we get?

Aqua: This one on the other hand... mermaids, tentacled horrors of all kinds, inklings and octolings, octarians, deep sea type creatures... there's plenty of things we can draw from with this rune.

I'd really like to at least try a few single rune creatures with these runes, they'd undoubtedly provide unique demons for the village.

>Speaking of, please have Demonologist invert the Aero rune, I suspect we'll get either the equivalent for fire or earth from it.
The one's we're missing are Pyro and Terra, I think. Unfortunately, we got Aero by inverting Aqua, so unless we get some kind of orthogonal conversion, we're kinda stuck with those.

>Kind of hard to pin down just what you'd get using this rune by itself.
Well... here's the weird part. These are the base elements from MAQ, so the obvious 1 rune monsters would be the corresponding elementals. So for Aqua we get Undine, and for Aero we get... humans?
>>
No. 956501 ID: 679a6d

>>956447
An orthogonal conversion is exactly what I think it is. At least, we don't lose more than a single rune to try it.

As for the Aero rune, we've seen that they're more versatile than that, even ignoring that there's a separate "Human" rune. Heck, if nothing else we could probably get demons made of clouds, or a storm elemental or something...

I bet putting Aqua and Aero together could make a living hurricane... Or some kind of seagull or pelican demon.

>An orthogonal conversion is exactly what I think it is. At least, we don't lose more than a single rune to try it.
As of last update we don't even lose a single one, so sure, let's try it. But for the record, inverting inverted runes has never given a different rune than the original before, so don't hold your breath. maybe the "New runes can be created randomly by destroying two runes" thing can do what we want? That does cost us a rune.

>As for the Aero rune, we've seen that they're more versatile than that, even ignoring that there's a separate "Human" rune.
Oh, I wasn't saying they couldn't be used for more than that. I was just saying we can do weird things with it. As for the Human rune, we've done things like that before when we made plant monsters without the Plant rune, there's some overlap. Too bad we can't just use the Aero rune to make a human, then rune them to make a Human rune, huh? We don't have it yet.

>I bet putting Aqua and Aero together could make a living hurricane... Or some kind of seagull or pelican demon.
Careful, we've been repeatedly warned about putting opposite runes in a monster.

My father told me about how beautiful the city was, the city's square full of trees, people happy and enjoying every second of their lives, even he had a good job driving the cargo ships from one planet to the other, that was... until the corruption came, a lot of people transforming into demon like creatures, everyone went berserk and tried to kill everything on their path, it was an endless war, my father and my mother also suffered from this desire but it faded away after 30 minutes, some of them were unable to recover they became wild animals hellbent on killing everything, they had to be... "put down" according to my father, thankfully my parents survived, they hid in a bunker where they stayed until the war passed, for some it was like an eternity, until everyone realized the war lasted only 50 minutes, nothing more. almost everything was destroyed, but those who managed to recover started rebuilding as soon as the war ended, my father told me that before the corruption he was married to a moth... something, after his corruption both of them lost all interest on the other, they divorced at parted ways each on his own, that's when he saw my mother, and they stayed together ever since.
my mother told me that when i was born it felt like all their dreams came true, that it was really hard to raise me, but thankfully she still had a copy of the knowledge book for me. she said that it has been 500 years since the war, and they are still waiting for the city to be rebuilt, they are thankful for having a low number, it means that they will see their city come to life very soon like it was before the war, other cities have been reported to have numbers as high as 200.000 years, thankfully we have inmense life spans for it, but... living like this for 200.000 years? i dont think i would be able to wait that long.
who am i you ask? my name is Brysen, and im hungry

that demon will be really useful for me, i need to think in a plan to get his attention, his horns would be extremely useful for my hexes.
wanna end someone's streak of luck? demon horn
wanna destroy someone's relationship? demon horn
want to make your hair brighter and softer? fairy dust.... and a bit of demon horn
and thats just the start, the tip of his wings are also really useful, i can make love potions with them, i can make stinky bombs whose stench are really hard to remove, i could even make an "explosive luck" potion, i could continue my research in how to make spells that would allow people to lose weight really fast.
then the tail... oh my god the tail, there are so many things i could make with a tail of that size, i could make anticorruption potions or anticorruption amulets with that tail, they are cheap but sell like hotcakes, and we are going through a shortage of them, it would be a blessing for us.
i could use his hair to make potions that will make even a bald man grow an afro overnight, or continue my research to make a panacea for all corruption related problems.
i could use all of him, everything, even... and i dont like this part..., his cum, for some reason demon cum has the highest number of uses for all sorts of magic, from uncorrupting, to antidotes for life threatening sickness.
god damnit, he is a walking money bag, i cant let him go.
and if he is a pure blood demon im never letting him go.
but what use could he find in a sorceress that secretly wants to harvest him?...

This is a text-based SFW quest, just so you're aware.

Alright.

Let's get started with this hiring process, yeah? What we have here, at our fingertips - or claw tips, or whatever, Talent signifiers can be odd, I know - is the world's largest Talent database. Someone is born with a Talent, it's in here. What we want - what we really need - is to find someone to fill up a position in the middle of nowhere. Not very exciting, for them, I know, but even flyover states need Heroes. Maybe not for the same things as they are needed for on the coasts or big cities. Stations need people, is what I'm saying. And yes - once we pick someone out, you'll be keeping an eye on them, advising them, and supporting them as their Agency team.

Congratulations on getting assigned to this, by the way, I salute your persistence in angering your bosses.

...Wait, how new are you? Goddamn. Let me lay this out for you: We're Agents of Heroes. A team of Agents is assigned to each Hero who lands themselves in a Station. They - we - support them with advice, information (Which you can access with Queries, things like Villain database pings) - and similar asks. Right now, we're looking for a suitable Hero to follow around like a noisy fairy.

You're new, so I'm going to walk you through this. Just give me a reply with a powerset you're interested in, and we'll narrow from there. There are a LOT of heroes, mind you. I wouldn't worry about there not being one for what we're searching.

Let's find a superhero.

would like a quick summary of Braveheart and what she did to end out here just to get an idea on what we should keep an eye out for.
Also investigate into where the funds for the town branch are going because while it shouldn't be the most advanced or entrenched building giving its location it shouldn't be so dilapidated either. If nothing is found on our front we could have our hero investigate and see if he can't turn something up in the field.

>Paintbrush:
Greetings paintbrush we will be agent for the foreseeable future. First question is would you prefer we call you by your hero name or something else? As for your first report, it was filled out rather well and found to be quite enlightening so you shouldn't worry there. As for your questions about Newton, while it isn't against any rules to request information on your fellow heroes it is frowned upon to request it for superiors without at least asking them first. Though I will say that while her powers don't relay on her car she often uses her car with her powers. If you want more info I would suggest asking her directly.
Speaking of which, as for what to do now that you're in the town I would suggest getting to know your co-workers better and try to head out on a patrol or two to get an idea on the layout of the town.

Regarding Braveheart, she was disciplined repeatedly in her hometown for various altercations. Considering her Talent pair, she was capable of serious harm, and reports from the various establishments she was being taught at show a propensity for getting into fights. Several times these incidents counted less against her than they would have normally due to the circumstances involved - she seemed to have a bad habit of punishing bullies too much. Hospital stays were frequently involved.

As for the money...
It seems to have all landed properly. Money was allocated for maintenance and spent. Contractors were contacted. It even seems we have a previous set of investigations and complaints, likely from... Yes, from Braveheart's own little squad. And it all dead ends with an odd "Problem resolved" from Newton. Kickbacks are unlikely given her record. And she was quite adamant this not be looked into, either. Something is up here, but investigating further feels like it might be a worrisome idea. Something tells me that a local element has a boot on her neck. Don
