SAI isn't useless, it's just disgusting.

I used to think so as well. That its tools were completely ineffective for painting in the way I choose to. However, when simply playing around with some settings, I discovered that the crayon tool, of all things, was very good when applied some bristle-type brush.

Otherwise, the interface is very neat and easy to navigate. What annoys me is that I cannot rule a straight line by holding shift and drawing across.
>>
No. 14758 ID: f09b71
I also do want to note, though I may be preaching to the choir, that SAI is far from useless when using lineart. SAI has that down, but I may be unduly biased even moreso because my tablet and photoshop don't play nice. Half the time the lines are shaky and unpleasant, the other half the pressure sensitivity just straight up doesn't work for that line.

The lack of orthogonal lines is a pretty lame thing though. A short workaround is to click on the screen to draw a dot, then use the arrow keys to go straight left/right/up/down, then shift-click to finish the line.

Personally I use Fire Alpaca to set up a grid or radial/perspective lines (those features are great and should be in way more programs than they are), then copy that layer and paste it into SAI. Bonus points because it conserves transparency between the copy paste, something that neither SAI nor photoshop does.
>>
No. 14759 ID: dd3420
>>14758

I find that interesting about Photoshop not accepting the transparency. Do you mean that you literally just copy and paste the layer from one programme to the other? Or do you export it as a .PNG or something? Because I know for a fact that Photoshop has alpha support.

Does FiraAlpaca actually have a feature to set up a proper perspective grid? That would be the best thing. I completely agree that more programmes should have that feature.
>>
No. 14761 ID: f09b71
>>14759
I do mean literally "Select All" then Ctrl-c what's on the layer in fire alpaca, then ctrl-v in SAI. And unless I'm terribly mistaken, photoshop doesn't preserve transparency with that method, despite that as you say, it does handle transparency with saving PNG's just fine. (PNG transparency isn't something that SAI does either, unfortunately.)

And yes, Fire alpaca actually does have the stuff to make a proper perspective grid. It's got a couple quirks and could be expanded on, but it is way better than the usual nothing at all.

Accurate self-portrait.

I decided that tomorrow I am going to try and be cool and important in my actions. I don't dress very dapper anymore either, and the resulting scruffiness/commoner appearance has contributed to not feeling as important as I actually am. Also, my greatcoat doesn't go with any of my peasant clothing and that is really a sad thing.

Warmup sketch. ~30 minutes.

I've had this character in mind for a while. If my mind was some kind of Sword and Sorcery setting, where Overlord was representative of my ambitions, then this guy is a rival warlord, and he represents laziness, apathy, which thwarts overlord and his attempts to reign. He has a firm hold on the land, and overlord tries constantly to banish him, but he does not go without a fight. He is the grand saboteur.

Actually, it's Windows that doesn't preserve transparency if you just copy what you see. The image is turned into a bitmap into the clipboard when you copy it that way. And bitmap doesn't have transparency whatsoever.
>>
No. 15152 ID: f09b71
>>15142
Then I suppose by windows default that is the case, but by some way or another fire alpaca preserves transparency with its cut/copy and pasting to specifically SAI. Yet it gets messed up if you try to paste the same thing to photoshop (no transparency, and changes to black).

it's a little rough.

Also I am in possession of two monitors now. It makes referencing much easier during the art process

Also:

I am in the market for a new tablet, in the near future. I was going to get the Wacom Intuos 5 Medium, but now I'm thinking I should be looking at the Large one. But the thing about that, is that it is pretty effin' expensive. But the medium one isn't exactly cheap either, and the main reason I want to upgrade is because this tablet of mine is too bloody small. But it's shit because the stores that sell them here don't have demo models for me to try out.
Does anybody else have any input regarding this matter?

My stomach has been painful for a long time now, but recently it's got worse, and it's making me feel sick all the time, and the medication the dok gave me doesn't appear to be working anymore. Also I don't seem to be able to draw any 'decent' stuff these days. Just sketches and scribbles. It's extremely discouraging, and as a result I just feel like doing nothing at all, except complain on the internet.

On a slightly less depressing note, classes have finished for the year, however I still have to go in and do some re-sits of tests because I was too much of a slack dumbass to study properly for them the first time around.

Not really. I understand that they're actually quite difficult to draw for many people. I just drew them a lot, and improved at it. I think my armour is a little boxier than how some other people draw it. I think the most important part is to understand their unconventional body proportions.

No, aboriginals are Homo Sapiens, and they do plenty of breeding. Even with white people. This is how you have people who are white by all appearances, but are allowed to receive Indigenous Payments (and other entitlements) because they are 1/16th aboriginal or something.

According to a book I was reading, a proper mental state for creation exists when the right hemisphere of the brain is allowed to take charge of an activity. This is to say, the left hemisphere is not equipped to do this activity, and it gets bored when you try to sit down and draw. It is a task for the right hemisphere, which does not have possess a comprehension of time or boredom. This might be why I am having trouble recently; I cannot make the transition to that state of mind, therefore I become tired and frustrated.

Had a good fight today. But it turns out my new gambeson isn't the best for keeping cool, holy shit. In retrospect, I shouldn't have chosen a black one. In related news, my coif is complete, save for the mantle. I need to figure out how to build that, so that will require a little more research. It might require another 2000 rings, which are also a pain in the arse to create. If I can find a way to display it correctly, I might take a photograph of it an upload it.

Aha, your drawing is a historical fallacy!

I'm not being smug for this but I think you'd like me to explain; Your knights are both in the right lanes of eachother, forcing them to put their lance over their horse to try and hit eachother. The reason they drive on the left in England is directly a result of jousting, where knights take up the left lane and use their right arm holding the lance to more accurately aim it, since most of the time your right arm is your main arm, which is only exposed to the enemy in the left lane.

A little history, :3

Oh, whoops. Now they're left-handed, and that won't do, either.

Wait, but then, wouldn't it make the shield a little needless, being that the right side is now more-or-less completely exposed (other than the extra defences offered by the reinforced and asymmetrical jousting armour) to the opponent's lance?

Well, shit.
>>
No. 18347 ID: c592e8
>>18346
The matter of fact is that you don't hold the shield, you use your left arm to hold onto your horse. The shields are always shoulder/torso mounted to deflect the blow away from your face, also getting hit was too hardcore for knights which is why the system is basically; "hit the shoulder shield and don't fall off."

Ok, yeah. That makes sense, whoops.

But are you sure about knights being on the left side of the fence. All the examples I saw (modern) featured the knights pointing the lance over the head of their horse. It also means it would require one to aim across the knight's body, and past his horse's head.

Also, all examples of later jousting armour that I have seen, have sported the reinforcements on the left side of the suit. If what you say is true, then it would make more sense for the reinforcements to exist on the right side of the armour, as to reduce the likelihood of injury.

In the example here (I do not know if it is authentic or a modern reproduction, just so you know), it is clear to see that the extra protection favours the left side of the wearer, implying a greater likelihood of receiving an impact on that part of the armour, further implying that the approach of the opponent was from the left of a combatant.

From a somewhat cursory search, I couldn't find any 'period' artworks that definitively showed this.

Jousting was indeed conducted on the right. It has no relation to the older style of driving on the left, an artefact of convenience when travelling on foot or on small carriages.
>>
No. 18355 ID: e1260a
>>18350
Modern jousting indeed happens on the right lane and opponents do hold their lances across the horse's head that way they are forced to point in a diagonal which reduces the impact on your adversary if I'm not mistaken.
Ancient jousting however, as >>18269 said did happen by the left lane, but the whole ordeal about modern driving is another story, first time I hear it.

>>18355
Upon consideration the response was rather vague on the "ancient jousting" side, let me explain:
In medieval to high middle ages joustes weren't exactly like what you imagine. The driving did happen by the left lane in order to make use of short weapons if the contestant desired it also serving the purpose of increased impact and aim if such an occurrence did happen, matter of fact ancient jousting was rather barbaric in action and shielded plated armour like the ones used nowadays didn't quite exist until sometime around the late middle ages where jousting began to actually develop rules due to the introduction of chivalry, after rules were introduced so did the armor and the method of reduced impact in favor of keeping the contestants alive.
So there you go, I hope this information proved to be of interest to a degree.

Heh. Also, you just need to exaggerate the movements. It might help them look less statuesque, more Olympian.
>>
No. 19036 ID: 5a5dd4
So, I am by no means an expert on dynamism anything, but the main problem I'm seeing with this batch of sketches is that everyone looks too balanced. Like, maybe with the exception of the hanging guy, all of the poses look like they could be held without moving for an extended amount of time.

Which is probably about right if these were sketched from a live model.

So basically, try to throw out the center of gravity a bit to make them appear a bit off balance. Like, make it so they look like they couldn't hold the pose, and that they would have to keep moving to not fall down.

For example, the guy 'running' with the rifle, right above where you wrote "MOST ARE SHIT". Yeah, he has one leg up and is bent over a bit, but his center of gravity still looks to be directly above his supporting foot. Outside of the fact that it’d be silly, there isn't anything to suggest he isn't just standing around like a flamingo with one leg raised.

So like, have him lean forwards a bit, almost enough that it'd look like he'd fall flat on his face if he didn't continue the stride.

Something else that might really help would be to bust open photoshop or flash or whatever and do some basic animation, like walk cycles or bouncing balls or whatever. I mean, a proper dynamic action pose is basically just a frame of an animated action, right? A snapshot of a character in motion.

I have no idea how much experience you have with animation, but the software is pretty easy to learn and there are tutorials all over the place. And if nothing else, you can ask about it right here. I'd be willing to help out, and I can’t be the only one on these boards that has animation experience.

In other news, I really dig the lineless sketchy paint-ey style you do sometimes. Them astronauts, man.

Yeah, I've done animation. But it's shit, though. I never dedicated enough time to claim any sort of adepthood. I did this recently: http://tgchan.org/kusaba/questdis/src/Necropolis_strong.swf

And if you ever read my shitty quest, 'Doolbag's Mission,' there's a couple of animated updates.

What you said made a lot of sense, though. Movement, after all, is just controlled (or uncontrolled) falling, isn't it.

A weird cheat, think of everything going in the opposite direction: Imagine that instead of a guy trying to swing a sword, the sword is fixed in space and the entire world around the character is shifting. Think of the character as trying to push the world back into place by grabbing onto the sword and using it as an anchor.
It sounds silly, but it might be easier to intuitively figure out what forces are acting where than taking forward momentum into account. Sort of an inverse kinematic approach.

Yeah, kinda.

The faces are making it really hard to take these seriously, but the two in the top right, the running and the falling guy, both look pretty alright for dynamism.

The top left and bottom right could both be good, but you need to take a minute to fix up the anatomy. Yeah, they’re just super quick sketches, but I mean the legs aren’t lining up with the pelvises right and heads aren't the right sizes and it’s not like you don't have a mound of art here showing that you know this stuff.

The arrow guy is just silly.

And honestly, I can’t really tell what the last guy is supposed to be doing. He has a sword and shield and his legs kinda look like he should be running, but then he has his sword arm stretched way out in front of him and I don’t even.

So, yeah. A few of them are better for dynamism, but frankly it looks like you didn’t put anywhere near as much effort or time into these sketches as into the other ones and it shows in the anatomy/proportions and the general quality of the sketches.

I hope this is of some help.

Well, I think I'm going to go with this for the pose. Any anatomical errors can be rectified during rendering, or concealed by clothing.

The character was described to me as bearing both Viking and Celtic characteristics. So for clothing, I have vague ideas, but nothing solid. The sword, 'Red Tooth,' is supposed to be finely detailed with runes and knot-work. But I'll get to that later.
>>
No. 19069 ID: e87e80
I'm no artist, but by logic I'm guessing the key to drawing dynamic poses is making the pose in such a way that it looks like it would be hard or impossible to recreate that pose standing for very long in real life.

Other than an angle grinder for smoothing the edges and a jigsaw for cutting the original plates out, I just used hand tools. Primarily, a 700g (1.5lb) ball-pein hammer. Neat.
You are abusing the ball head too much tho.
Look for something more rigid than a stump if you're planning in smoothing those botches.
For future reference, you can make a hole in dirt and fill it with sand for making dome-shaped metalwork, just make sure you don't strike the same area too often/hard as you can break the piece.

From what I've been told by a person who makes armor that I know, you should use a large hammer to make the shape ad work your way to smaller hammers to smooth it out. And if you can find one, an English Wheel is great for finishing. Here's a link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_wheel

I do believe you understood him wrong, normally you should mold the shape with small tools, then smooth them with "bigger" ones and then it comes the details, again with small tools.
Bigger tools for shaping the piece can result in it having fissures, specially in someone without the knowledge to deliver an adequate strike.

Overlord (the character) is missing a left eye. In older artworks, I depicted him as bearing a large gash over that side of his face in order to imply the mutilation underneath. Due to being distastefully cliché, I have since removed that detail, but the eye is still missing.

Despite a nasty accident as a child that had me taken to the hospital, I still have both eyes intact and operational.
>>
No. 20289 ID: eaaf3b
Quick note, people with one eye do not actually suffer any major damage to normal depth perception . What they do lack is ability to judge speed and distance of moving objects, such as a sword coming at them or an arrow whizzing by. I don't wanna yanno be a butt and tell you how to write the story but those could be important factors for a story
>>
No. 20297 ID: 8cf0e8
>>20289
Other way around, really. Stereopsis is only a significant contributor to depth perception up to about 15-20 metres (and the falloff is pretty steep). Most depth cues are based on parallax, shape, size, focus (accommodation) motion and light/shade. It's close up objects that are most affected by the loss of an eye, not distant ones. Assuming the ability to move your head, of course.
>>
No. 20304 ID: eaaf3b
Yeah close objects aren't majorly affected but one eye makes it much more difficult to perceive depth when dealing with speed movement, such as a trying to catch a ball or or dodge something coming at you; I was wrong about the sword thing though that wouldn'tbe major but projectiles would be a serious issue (as far as I'm educated on the subject but let's be honest I'm prolly wrong about most of this if your research shows otherwise you probably did a better job lookin up stuff so feel free to override me)
