You can feel a tug of belief. Without belief, you are nothing. This tiny amount of belief stirs something deep within you.

You have just become aware of your own existence.
You can now sense.

You do not know what race Gwendolyn is from, for you have never asked, and this is not knowledge that comes instinctively to you. You cannot yet read the minds of your followers.

Brimbo is on his way back. He has a small collection of sticks, twigs, and dried plants that he seems quite proud of.

Being the god of something specific is rather limiting though. It's alot easier to be the god representing a force of nature or something similar. Being a Sun god is always a good start.

Indeed yes, but that leaves out an entire spectrum filled with incredibly interesting things. Better to be the god of something more abstractly powerful, like balance, truth, or reasoning.

One does not exclude the other. Most major gods gather up lots and lots of domains. A Sun god can be a god of fire, life, light, truth, justice, balance and a shitload of other stuff as well. Then there is all sorts of fun stuff you can get into with avatars.

But our most immediate concern is gathering knowledge and making up some doctrine. A new religion should be easy to access as well as not place to great a strain on our worshippers. Insisting on sacrifice early on could make us less worshippers even if it gives more power in the short term.

You are a fledgling god. Your current believers are creatures named Gwendolyn and Brimbo. You have chosen to manifest an avatar by possessing a cave slime from where your two followers first met. It feels fitting in a way; like yourself, it is small and weak, but has great potential for improvement. Gwendolyn has just made dinner for you and your followers, and you have been placed in the center of the table. Besides translating for them, you also intend to find out more about this world that is so new to you...

Hmm... ask about magic. Is it rare? Does it exist in many forms on this plain? If so we might be able to learn about the different types and use that to our advantage...

Also, Gwyn. What the hell are you.

You speak: I wish to know more about this place. First, Gwendolyn, I do not know what to call you. You said Brimbo is a goblin, but what are you? Second, tell me about magic in this realm. I must know who can use it and what it does.

Gwendolyn looks at you oddly and answers,"I am a human. I thought you would know that, lord Imeru. And as for magic, I can say little. I remember conjurers in the street performing magic tricks as a little girl, and I've heard stories of wizards who command elemental forces. Also, some of the priests of other gods perform miraculous deeds on occasion. But magic is known very little out here."

After Gwendolyn finishes, Brimbo pipes in "Who said Brimbo was goblin?! Brimbo not goblin at all! Brimbo orc! Brimbo even speak orcish! Why master say Brimbo goblin?!"
>>

Brimbo, it doesn't matter what you are, you're you. You seem to be at least partially goblin, but there's nothing wrong with that. Gwen, There is something we are curious about, where did you get your armor and sword? It hardly seems fitting for your profession, or are we wrong about that?

You speak: Brimbo, you claim to be an orc, yet others think you look like a goblin. Can you explain?

Brimbo thinks, then says, "Brimbo is a weak orc. Brimbo and mother driven out of tribe. Mother leave Brimbo in cave when Brimbo old enough to hunt. Mother never talk about father. Brimbo called goblin by many peoples, but Brimbo is true orc."

You translate this for Gwendolyn's sake.

You speak: As for you, Gwendolyn, you seem very well armed for a shepherd. Why don't you tell me about it?

Gwendolyn responds, "This is actually my father's armor. It was left to me last year. He was a knight, for a while. But he made some enemies in court, and he had to leave the country. He took me with him when he moved out here, and started this ranch. He also trained me in swordplay a little. I don't know why. Maybe he'd wanted a son. I don't know. He left without a trace last year, except for a note telling me not to follow him. I looked for him for months, but I couldn't find anything, so I've been tending to the ranch. Does that explain things, lord Imeru?"

You translate this back for Brimbo.

Gwendolyn answers, "Well, I don't remember all the gods worshiped over in Velatra, but there's the sun and moon goddesses, Solaria and Lunora. There's also a temple to the god of trade and commerce, Viandel. Oh, and I remember people praying to Skadrik, god of shadows and vengeance, but he is rarely publicly acknowledged."

Brimbo also speaks up: "In orc lands, orcs worship many gods. Seems like each tribe have own god of battle. Sometimes gods grant wishes, like master does. At home tribe orcs worship Bruntle."

135195

You ask some questions.

Whisper replies: It looks like you need a lecture on the nature of worship and belief. If people believe in you, you become stronger. But it gets complicated when you go into the details. First, people can be devoted to many gods at a time, but for some reason many of them like choosing a primary god. When they pray for specifics, however, they tend to pray to the god that they know will help them best. This is why we gods tend to specialize. We pick an area of miracles that we can get people to pray to us for, and that in turn gives us power. Primary worship gets you more power, of course, but that is difficult to get outside of a priesthood, and a country made entirely of priests would soon starve itself, even if one of us spent all of our power sustaining it.
While we are not necessarily limited by our domains, we tend to get better at certain kinds of miracles if we try them repeatedly, so a god of trees, for instance, tends to be good with growing, health, and similar miracles. Also, the kind of worship you get will sometimes flavor the belief. Prayers for specific tasks are best used to carry out miracles relevant to those tasks. If a farmer asks for a good crop, it's easier to use that belief to help his crop than it is to, say, burn down his house. Miracles are easiest when asked for. On another note, worship through sacrifice is a powerful way to collect belief, but it is best used for miracles of destruction. For some of the tribal gods, though, that's the only way they can collect enough power to do anything big.
As to whether you're going to upset anyone by collecting believers, that depends entirely upon the god. Personally, I'm more amused than anything else, but other gods will feel differently. Most gods are quite protective of their followers, and don't appreciate poaching, even if its from areas outside their domains. After all, they can provide those services too, if necessary. The sky goddesses are nice enough to others, but only because they know how difficult it is to influence the sun and moon. But don't expect any help from them. Smaller gods tend to be more jealous, since they are at more risk. For your own sake, you should definitely try to get more followers than you have now, but don't expect it to be easy, especially with that ridiculous avatar you seem to have manifested. Whatever possessed you to do such a thing with so little strength? Your ties to it are so strong that you'll find it a difficult shell to relinquish until you have much more power.

Our sense of self is tenuous, held in place only by the belief of the two beings that accompany us. You defend your choice of avatar.

Whisper replies: While I retain my position on your choice, I was trying to warn you of the consequences of making said choice. You will find that interaction with the physical world is easier through your avatar, but it will in turn shape you as well. In addition, the loss of an avatar before its time is a severe shock; you might as well be mortal. Unless you can accumulate an abundance of belief, you will find it less temporary than you had hoped.

But enough about your strange sense of dramatic propriety; did you have any other questions?

Looks like we need to work even harder now to make sure we don't get squished. Ask about... general information about the world. What species live here? What are their cultures like? You speak: Whisper, I need to know as much as possible about this world. What are its species, and which are capable of worship? What are the dominant cultures? Are we gods expected to be omniscient? Are there any particular gods I should watch out for while I am still growing?

You wait.

After a long pause, Whisper answers: Mind that you don't overextend my little favor. I will already be expecting a minor boon out of this later on. But I will tell you some of what you want to know.
There are several species of worshippers. We have humans, orcs, goblins, elves, dwarves, and the beastmen as our main worshippers. You'll have to find out their cultures yourself.
As for the local gods, let me tell you a few interesting tidbits about them. Viandel, god of trade and travel, is a relatively recent god. He got where he is today through trading up, as it were. For some reason, Skadrik worship travels with him. Make of that what you will.
As I previously stated, I will be collecting a minor boon from you some time in the future, when you are capable of repaying it. Think of this little chat as an investment. I have forseen a few of your struggles, and I intend to profit from them.

We should probably start thinking about assigning ourselves a gender, or remaining decidedly androgynous, because if we ever adopt a form other than a blob of slime, the question is going to come up. Unless we have a gender already. Of course, if we take up mutation or change as a domain, having a malleable gender might be a good idea.

A female avatar makes sense. "A face only a mother would love" right? Mothers represent Tolerance very well.

I nominate a hermaphrodite, fully capable in form and function.
If that's not an option, then female.

We have enough slime-girls already. :/

Our form should be inspiring to those who see it, something that commands respect worthy of a god. We shouldn't go into a specific dierction with intimidating or appealing. We are a god of acceptance and in that respect our form should reflect this. I believe we should work toward a sort of blend between the two to create a terrifying beauty, something that both the monsterous and the most attractive of appearences can see themselves within and will be drawn to. This is all long term of course, for now a simple change in color to silver or perhaps a warm inviting color and a shift of shape to include more human or orcish features, as those are all we yet know. Adding a maw, some basic limbs, and ears would be a good start on the the whole process.

I'd like to have our god be a god of communication and understanding, as we were when we convinced our first two followers to reconcile their differences.

In the interest of that, I'd like to keep our form malleable so we can change depending on who we're dealing with.

I still think female, and nurturing is more fitting.

Malleable gender sounds good, and let's go for an inspiring kind of form. Silver is a nice color, as is blue and white.

you guys are all think long term, you would have to use a lot of your mystic juice to to anything like that. we are only the size of a head. so unlike slime quest we can't just eat everything and get HUGE!! our slime body needs to digest it.

Maybe we should be the god of improvement through change.
Through our initial interactions, we've improved the orc's lot in life, and the farmer's, as well, through changing the situation.
We're already developing a bit of talent with the whole alteration thing, too.

You take some time to consider your future prospects. As a god, you have changed two people's lives for the better, so beneficial change could be a good domain to work on. Similarly, your experimentation on your slime body lends itself well to change. Considering your previous thoughts on becoming a god of tolerance and compassion, you feel that you have a direction to aim for when you ask for worship.

On the other hand, you have many aspirations for your avatar, and have considered changing it to become more appealing to worshipers. When you have more power, you could make significant changes to your form. For more immediate effect, you give your slime body the ability to change color and make it turn silver. You choose to remain genderless for now.

This growing business has taken more time than you had anticipated, but noon is still a few hours away. What will you do now?

perhaps go and see the sheep ranch?

also if we want to be really meta we can tell Gwen that we are able to do things easier if she asks for them then if we do it on our own.

Check up on Gwen and Brimbo.

We should find out something about the local farming community. Maybe we can use the outskirts of the local town / city / wherever as our starting base, and then work our way into more concentrated populations.

You head back. On your way, you check on Brimbo and Gwendolyn to see what they are doing. Brimbo is resting, looking up at the sky. Gwendolyn is tending to the sheep with her animal.

The layout of Gwendolyn's house is quite simple. There are four rooms. The first room has a fireplace and various tools stored away. The second room is where Gwendolyn sleeps, and also houses her armor and personal belongings. The third room is the dining room. It has a table and some chairs, as well as some cabinets. The fourth room is empty, and Gwendolyn put your slime body in it last night.
