In retrospect, we should have seen it coming. Our Delegates reported they hadn't heard from The User in over a week. To not receive instructions from The User for a few days was uncommon enough, but an entire week was simply unheard of. And yet, here we were going about our lives with a sudden loss of purpose.

The news didn't bother me - it didn't seem real. The User never interacted with us sprites directly - It seemed so far away, like it whatever happened with It was on another partition trillions of bytes from Home. In fact, I was far more concerned that my wife was still away on her business trip - she transferred to a USB Storage Device hours before the last known contact with The User.

Suddenly, I had a much larger concern ahead of me.

I ran as the universe around me dissolved in green flame. There were logfiles of course, but no one took them seriously. Their created by date was ancient. Years ago! We should have been more prepared. I could only thank The User my wife wasn't back yet. She wouldn't have to go through this.

The universe is not infinite. I reached its edge far too soon, the roiling format wave rumbling behind me all the while. Those giant red characters seared my vision.

And just like that, the world ended.

The daemon, whose origins I could not begin to divine but am grateful for nonetheless, must have protected me somehow. And this place. I can tell it is much smaller than Home, but it feels safe. Unindexed. Whatever commanded the format to come will have a hard time finding me here.

Except there is no here. There is... nothing. Even my body is less substantial. I am reduced to a mere handful of primitives. The world is gone and myself along with it. But what now?

Well, right this second I need a filename - a new one, and I need to figure out what the Recycle Bin to do next.

Swap! Yes, that seems fitting.

What does a sprite who's just survived the end of the world do next? I'm capable of some basic instancing, and I think I won't have to worry about attracting attention since this partition is entirely unindexed. Doesn't look like there's much attention available to attract anyway.

This place was just wiped clean from that format - if I did have a map it wouldn't show much of anything. If I want something to exist in this void, I'm probably going to have to create it or bring it here myself.

> Create test.txt

I now have a blank text file. It's... a start, I guess?

> Internet/LAN?

The Operating System is gone. All of the Delegates have been deleted. Everyone has. I heard the Primary Network Device stopped receiving packets approximately a week ago. I'm not sure I'm capable of navigating the networking hardware by myself - there's a very real chance I would get lost forever. I can try, though - I'm nearly as good as gone already.

> Creation abilities?

I am capable of creating structure but not function - at least not complex function. I could create a replica of the Networking Control Center, for instance, but without source code and some processing time it would be just a facade. I can write some basic source - everyone was taught to growing up, but processing time... well before when we needed it we'd ask a Delegate and they... I'm not really sure what they did, but then we got it. If I could find whatever it is they retrieved, I could create pretty much anything - the only limit then is my source.

I can also produce things with very simple function - they will work as long as I attend them. I could create a door bell, but it would not function unless I was devoting my own personal processing time to it.

> Create a bunch of files
I can create them all, but they're just chunks of data. Most of them aren't readable without the proper method - those were usually provided to us by applications. I can read some files on my own - simple text, some image formats, etc.

> Write protection armor
That's not a bad idea. If I want it to do anything but look good I'll have to devote some time to compile its actual function. I'll devote a bit of myself to that now.

> Back yourself up
Sprites are unique - no two are alike, except for twins but everyone's a little weirded out by them. I could create another sprite, and even make them look similar to me, but they would be their own sprite. Sprites have produced simulacrums in the past - daemons that are made to look and act like sprites, but they're just soulless golems. It's not a practice that was looked well upon.

> Internet/network

I'm not sure I want to go out there without any purpose - risking myself senselessly isn't in the top ten on my to-do list. This partition is completely desolate, or so it seems, but there are other places I can go. I could go back to the C partition - I'm not sure what I'd find there. There are lots of different hardware interfaces I could try and make my way to - they should be relatively untouched by all this, but I've never been there personally.

The problem with going anywhere, though, is getting there. Two problems, in fact. Firstly, I'll have to go to the RAM stream to get anywhere, and that is a very chaotic, dangerous place without an application thread to ride on. Second, there's the Garbage Collector: It doesn't come here because this hidden partition is unindexed, but if I go anywhere outside of here I run the risk of drawing its attention. Any data that isn't where it's supposed to be gets "collected" by the Garbage Collector. It's the sprite reaper.

> Try making a cube
I have more cube now than I did before.

> Run as a batch file
There are no applications left. There's not even an OS. Unless I write my own handlers, these complex files aren't going to be of much use.

> C:\format /s
If I had that kind of power I would have stopped the format before it could finish.

> Personal file tag to Hidden
Thankfully I'm already hidden as long as I stay on this partition. I could maybe produce some source to mask my presence in other places, but compiling it is a problem.

> Make cube transparent
Substance is overrated - my cube provides cover without blocking line of sight.

> Compiler?
I posses a very rudimentary compiler, but I require a thread to weave it with. The Delegates always provided those. I don't know where they got them from. Sometimes unmanaged threads would crop up, but they were quickly appropriated by the OS.

Suddenly there is a flash and I feel a very fundamental reaction flicker through my primitive body. What remains when my vision readjusts is a perfectly captured and preserved unmanaged thread.

It seems this form has its advantages. I can use this to compile, though probably for not very long before the CPU shuts it down. I can create several simple functions, one somewhat involved function, or any combination in between.

I should be very aware of what I use this for - I may not find another unmanaged thread for a while.

I'd also suggest trying to make something that can produce more unmanaged threads. Or perhaps find them: Scout/search programs, anyone?

However, if you can't do that, I would suggest creating some sort of battle programs (Armor/Defense, Weapondry/Attack programs) with which to defend yourself, if that's possible.

Create an unmanaged thread finder so you can get more string stuff, then stash the rest in a file.
