A Dragon was born.

The Serpents are long and lithe. They can swim and burrow, but have no limbs or wings.

The Wyverns are capable of true flight, slender and light.

The Drakes can glide and are sturdy and strong

The Wyrms are landbound, but massive and powerful.

The tiny Draconians are flightless and weak, but resemble men.

What sort of Dragon was born that day?

A DRAKE was born. A mighty beast. It had been given the power to blast its foes with

Nightmares, putting hordes of lesser creatures into a supernatural slumber

Fire, scorching a cone of foes and setting things ablaze

Lightning, damaging structures and scorching groups of nearby creatures

Acid, dissolving tight streams of enemies and destroying the works of man

Cold, freezing flesh and splintering wood in a wide cone

Radiation, an intense, focused beam of power deadly to men but totally ineffective against structures.

What power did the Drake wield?

The Drake spat BOLTS OF LIGHTNING, best against single, powerful foes. Its body was best-suited to certain activities, though. Some would describe it as a

Brute. Massive, with a thick hide and swollen muscles. Slow, but tough and strong.

Beast. Lithe. Able to sneak quietly and move quickly.

Magus. Almost immune to magic and supernatural effects, but not particularly strong or stealthy.

How would the Drake best be described?

"Pretty" strong doesn't do jack shit against a horde or something that isn't effected by our lightning breath.

Besides, if we really need something magical dealt with we can seek the help of a humanoid magician, something I imagine is much easier than seeking the help of another dragon or dragon-sized creature to deal with a physically taxing matter.

The Drake was a Brute, massive and tough.

But what of its mother? The one who cared for it until it was sent out to fend for itself?

She was a powerful Drake, known far and wide as a

Tyrant. A cruel overlord who commanded hordes of evil monsters. She carved out a vast domain and an even more vast horde of treasure before she was slain by a mighty group of heroes.

Seer. She lived in the wilderness, and was she was seen as kind and wise. Peoples of all types would come to ask her advice and aid, and when a powerful force of evil threatened the land, she did battle against it. Eventually, it was her time to move on and she turned to stone, becoming part of the mountain that had been her home.

The Drake's mother was a Seer. She was kind and cared for the little Drake until it was sent out to carve its own way in the world. When it traveled, it eventually found a place it would like to call its home.

The Mountains are rocky and steep, with few towns, few animals, and several monsters

The Forest are dense and dark, with several towns, many animals and many monsters

The Hills are low and rolling, with many towns, several animals and several monsters

The Swamp is dank and wet, with few towns, many animals and many monsters

The Plains are fertile and civilized, with many towns, many animals and few monsters

The Jungle is lush and vibrant, with few towns, many animals and few monsters

The Desert is barren and dry, with few towns, few animals and several monsters

The Badlands are blasted and infertile, with few towns, few animals and many monsters

The Coast is turbulent and active, with many towns, many animals and many monsters

Where did the young Drake settle?

The Drake found a cave along a rocky, coastal cliffs. It survived and grew massive on the bounty of the sea. Nearby, in the rocky foothills, dwarves dwelled in deep delvings. Elves lived nearby, by the great river. Across the way, many villiages of gnoll and goblin raiders made their home.

Far to the south, a great elven kingdom thrived, protected from the dark lord and his undead forces by an enchanted forest that was difficult to navigate.

What color was the dragon? It could have been up to two.

(Zrmru doesn't really fit in with the naming conventions I have, even though its the most popular)

It was a cold day in the middle of winter when Lahamu decided an idle life of feeding wouldn't do. She was a dragon, after all, a powerful and majestic creature. Her mother had been a great seer, after all, and Lahamu also aspired to greatness. She thought about what she knew of the terrain, thinking of how she should go about building her renown.

The dwarves to the east probably knew of her, but she'd never had extensive dealings with them.

[each map square is a day's travel by land. Lahamu can glide two squares in a day, but then she must land. She needs an elevated terrain feature to take off.]

Alternatively, we could head over to those elves two squares to the northeast, by the river. They may need some help, what with their proximity to the gnoll raiders.

Plus, if they react violently towards us, we would have a better chance of fighting them off than if we had gone for the larger elf settlement.

Nevertheless - we shall journey forth to usher in a new golden age for gnoll civilization... one way or another.

You know what? I agree. Fuck the elves, we're going for the gnolls. We help them out, and they'll either become prosperous enough to give up raiding, or they'll conquer the land and rule it with an iron, hyena-like fist. It's a win-win situation.

So here is my proposed plan for when we arrive, since we currently lack a /dis thread (and haven't actually done anything yet, so I didn't feel like starting one)

1. Punch gnolls in snout to assert dominance. Short initial conquest phase - probably just want to take over the largest group available and stragglers within a day's walk for lesser, nondraconic beings.

2. Teach our new subjects about the wonders of hygiene - bathing, boiling water before drinking, and so forth. A healthy tribe is a happy tribe! Should also help with interspecies relations in the future.

3. Continuing quality-of-life improvements now that we have clean, parasite-free minions. Infrastructure such as aqueducts, improved herding and hunting techniques, schools. Cultural conquest of neighboring tribes backed by show of force when necessary. Lowered infant mortality should increase our group's numbers much faster than the neighbors anyway.

4a. We have now civilized the hell out of all these gnolls. Take our rightful place among the league of nations.

or

4b. CONQUEST!

I figure we can get all of this done within a few hundred years at the outside. We can rebuild the tribes. We have the techgnollogy.

Despite that horrible pun (you should get shoot for it). I say this sounds good. Our towering brutish form should have the gnolls awed after we chomped down/knocked out a couple of their champions.

And since Gnolls are hardly known for any great magical powers they're unlikely to be able to use that against us. Unlike the damn elves.

Lahamu decided to begin her adventures by visiting the Gnolls. She glided across the foothills and plains, barely reaching the far shore of the choppy, slate-gray lake.

Soon, she was in the territory of the gnolls. As soon as she approached the first village, she heard yips of terror and barks of "Dragon! Dragon!" Most fled, but some hid inside their huts.

She approached the nearest hut and shook the roof. "Come out, you!" she said in her most commanding voice. It didn't sound particularly terrifying to her, but the gnoll immediately emerged, grinning nervously and pleading with her.

"Oh big dragon! Please don't burn down Rolls-In-Corpses! We don't got enough meats to give you! We gots to give the meats and captives to Gnaws Bones in the lake sos that he protects us good! Elves got lots of meats! They tasty and not good for nothing! Gnolls is tough and stringy! Ain't nothing but bones and make a dragon sick to eat!"

The gnoll looked plenty healthy to Lahamu.

On the bright side, that means they are used to taking commands from scary monsters like you.

Don't act overly threatening for now. Ask him about Gnaws Bones and what he looks like, this way you'll be able to evaluate your chances.

Also ask him who's the chieftain of the tribe.

And of course your voice isn't going to sound terrifying to you; I mean, it's your own voice, after all.

Anyway he's totally lying through his teeth about not being worth eating, but that's just self-preservation instinct working in high gear, there.

Ask him who and what this Gnaws Bones thing is. You probably don't need to be overly threatening about it, since you get a lot of points on that end by just being you to begin with.

The answer to that question will help you figure out what to do next. If Gnaws Bones is a serious threat, and the chieftain has some kind of rapport with whatever it is, then obviously threating the chieftain to try to conquer these guys isn't gonna work out very well.

Lahamu asked the gnoll to show her to its chieftain, and it was all to eager to oblige, bowing and fawning as it leads Lahamu forward.

The gnolls decided Lahamu was not there to eat them or raze their village and began to peer from their simple huts. Rolls-In-Corpses led Lahamu to a nicer hut, elevated on a little hill, and barked that a dragon wanted to speak to the occupant.

Soon enough, an old gnoll in robes adorned with skulls and bones slowly emerged from the shadows. Lahamu asked it about Gnaws Bones.

"All us gnolls give sacrifice to Gnaws Bones," cackled the gnoll. "In return, no elf boats cross his lake. Gnaws Bones is big! Gnaws bones is Strong!" There is a chorus of high-pitched yips from the gnolls all around.

"The Black Lord tries to make the gnolls his slaves with his skeletons," it continues, "but Gnaws Bones come out of the lake and crush them. We give Gnaws Bones big food and plenty of elfs in his big old lake and Gnaws Bones keep all the gnolls good and safe." It cackles and all the other gnolls yip and bark in a chaotic cacophony.

Tell him that you will not only take over Gnaws on Bones place but also usher the Gnolls of his tribe into a new golden era.

Sounds like it's a kraken in the lake. Or something similar. Could be a serpant dragon thing as well. But it's in water.

Find a nice jump off point, some nice thermals and circle above the lake while firing of lightnings into it. That should hopefully make whatever it is breach the surface and then we can drive it onto land and use brutish frame to pin it down and rip it to pieaces.

Lahamu couldn't decide exactly how to deal with the gnolls or with Gnaws Bones. She decided that she needed more information. The gnoll shamaness told her that they were making their sacrifice in a few days, and that Lahamu was free to come meet Gnaws Bones herself.

A frigid wind blew foamy whitecaps as the gnolls set out cages of prisoners and livestock at the edge of the lake. Most of them quickly fled, but the shamaness remained behind, making intonations in a strange language.

The lake frothed and boiled with activity as a gleaming carapace hove into view. It stared at Lahamu with cold, alien eyes.

"Big Lord Gnaws at Bones," barked the shamaness, "Mighty Dragon Lahamu wants to talk with you!"

Its voice was a clatter of clicks like a bucket of scrap falling down a stairwell.

"Dragon smells of salty ocean. what it wants here with my gnolls?"

Lahamu decided to leave the gnolls and Gnaws Bones alone. Although she had no doubt that she could kill the creature if it came to battle, an ally could often be more valuable than an enemy or a corpse.

She decided to visit the nearby elves. She could barely glide above the surface of the lake, as there were no significantly elevated spots, but the land fortunately became even lower and flatter on the other side. She would certainly have to walk home from here.

The elves appeared to live in strange, cylindrical wooden huts, mostly farming. As she approached the closest cluster of huts, a female elf approached, magically projecting her voice so that Lahamu could hear her clearly.

"Greetings, and well-met, daughter of Gneisenau - that most wise dragon of the distant mountains. We greet you with great pleasure and ask how we can serve you," intoned the elf in a clear, high voice.

So, these swamp elves knew of her mother somehow... Lahamu thought carefully before deciding how to proceed.

>>
No. 173352 ID: eb6d46

our job is now to unite the races under our banner. this is why the monster will die, and this is why the undead will re-die. our priorities should be as follows:

1. find out about goblins and the southern elves, this is imperative to be done before anything else. any quests they need done might rearrange the list. we will cross that bridge as it comes.

2. ally with elves, tell them that if they ally with you, then you will kill the evil beast that 'enslaved' the gnolls and has attacked the elves in the past.

3. convince the gnolls that you will protect them from the necromantic monsters and you will even convince the elves to play nice, the only thing they have to do is let you destroy the faglobster.

4. kill the lobster. do this alone or with help, so long as it dies.

5. convince the elves that the gnolls were being dominated mentally by the monster, and that they are cured of the taint.

6. find some way to ally with southern elves and goblins

7. live with the races for a generation, making sure that they see you as a maternal figure who will give her life to protect them. this may or may not be true, your choice. find the most defensible position on the map, make a defensible city on it (I will possibly go into more detail on the city later). train most of the second generation in combat tactics (gnolls will train as bezerkers and hoplites, elves as bowmen and wizards, goblins as technicians and shamans, depending on their abilities).

8. assault the dead fortress. annihilate it. no escape. no mercy. after all traces of the fortress are gone. run a campaign of battle across the land, destroying all undead in the continent. then return to your great city, immortalized as the dracogod that united all of life and saved them from the dark powers of corruption.

as for now, before anything, ask the elves about gnolls, goblins, and any other races around. ask about any trouble they have, ask about their willingness to conform to your plan.

this is my plan so far, please suggest alterations to it and ways to expedite this process.

We have lived simple lives in these marshes for countless centuries as a loose alliance of independent villages. Always, the gnolls have preyed on us for the purpose of homophagy and rapine. They were a violent, evil nuisance in the past, but now that they have tamed a massive, ancient lake monster, there is little we can do. Their numbers continue to expand. If they were unified instead of bickering tribes, I fear they would have overtaken us already.

Although the lake monster is little more than an animal, it is quite strong. Our magic can confuse it, but on the water there is nothing we can do.

We are friends with the dwarves in their strongholds to the west. We frequently trade with them. They have ready use for our spellcasters, and we value their worked goods and steel weapons.

Father south is the town of Gullsport. The elves there distant cousins of ours. They have abandoned the old ways and have become like humans. We sometimes deal with them if necessary.

I know little of the goblins. I believe they fight with the gnolls for resources and territory, and I thank them for it.

Of course, to the southwest is the Black Citadel of the demon prince Krazzek. He is a powerful spellcaster who has raised and army of undead and utterly destroyed the human kingdom that once occupied his territory. He seeks to bring the other savage creatures under his thrall, whether willingly or as his undead minions. Be careful of him, magnificent one, I fear that although you are a powerful and majestic creature, you are ill-prepared to deal with a creature such as he.

Please, stay with us as long as you please. We are most honored by your visit."

She bowed low and other elves appeared with offerings of jewels, food, and masterful works of art. Lahamu ate her fill and enjoyed the praise of the elves as they sang and danced into the night for her amusement. She was pleased with her reception, but it appeared that uniting the disparate races as a unified empire would be much more difficult than she first suspected.

Eat the food, but don't take the jewels or the art. You have a lot of travel ahead of you, and such things are simply more room for concern.

Besides, the image you want to project is that of a practical mind unconcerned with petty things like wealth. Just make sure to politely decline, say you are honored but have no need of their offerings, and that you are not comfortable taking something beyond simple hospitality which you have done nothing to earn.

I think our best course of action at this point would be to forge an alliance between the goblins and the elves, and work together to curtail Gnoll raids.

my previous plan may need to be altered, just replace gnolls with dwarves as front liners, and attempt to get the gnolls to a neutral stance, instead of outright hostile. this is not the only course of action, however. it may be possible to convince the elves and gnolls to play nice anyway, but it would take some time.

but as is, we need to visit the elven neighbors, then talk to the various races about lore, rumors, history, and their willingness to work with one an other (it is doubtful that they will want to at first, but with coaxing and draconic charisma, you can do it).

Lahamu left the elves. She took nothing with her, explaining that she had yet to deserve their treasures. The elves praised her wisdom, grace, and beauty, and sang hymns to her majesty as she began the long, slow overland journey to the goblin villages to the west.

She traveled through the marshland, across the river before coming to the forest. The dense trees slowed her further so that it was a full four days before she reached its western edge.

The goblins had clear cut the far edge of the forest, turning it into a muddy waste. It had not taken long for Lahamu to decide that walking was a far inferior means of travel and she was in something of a foul mood by the time she reached the first disgusting cluster of slovenly hovels.

There were no signs of any goblins, but she could smell their stink. The village certainly wasn't abandoned. They had clearly seen her approach. She contemplated the best method of making her intentions known to them.

Lahamu called out to the goblins that she wished to speak with them, but nothing happened.

She shouted again that she would speak with their leader, but still none emerged.

She insisted that she wasn't there to hurt them, but they remained inside their homes.

Finally, she indicated that she could do something unsavory to the town square, and slowly doors creaked open.

Green, crooked faces peered from darkened doorways; fading light glinting off rusty steel. One of the goblins croaked at the dragon in its deep, raspy voice, "'Ey! Wot you want 'ere, dragon? We aint got nuffink wot you want. 'Ard enough gettin' enough food fur alla us - got none to spare fur a big lizard."

After dealing with the elves, and even the gnolls, Lahamu found the goblins crude manner somewhat offputting. Didn't they realize how easy it would be for her to wipe their village off the map?

They hid hoping you'd go away, and now they're being annoying and worthless for the same reason. Being polite is probably an alien idea to them, but if you want their help you can't let it bother you.

Appeal to their selfishness somehow. Don't try to convince them to be allies working for the good of all, but if they help you out and don't get in your way they will reap benefits. The little bastards probably get everywhere, ask them for detailed information on the surrounding areas.

But honestly, if these little bastards were all eaten, electrocuted, sliced to ribbons and ground to paste it wouldn't be much of a loss. Only reason not to is you'd never get them all, and probably end up hurting your efforts.

Lahamu decided that she has to appear dangerous. These goblins respond to force. She sits tall, spreading her wings. Her voice reverberates over their filthy huts.
"Little man, watch your tongue. I do not want your meager resources, rather I wish to know why you would cut trees and make houses from mud. If you follow me, I can reward you."

The goblin didn't seem particularly intimidated, even though it should have been. Lahamu could have wiped the village off the map without even trying!

The goblin looks up with its beady eyes. "Some clink, 'ey? Th' trees is good for supports, an' the rest is good for money. Lahamu could not allow this behavior to stand. Being threatened? These insolent creatures must be taught a lesson! She felt the energy build in her and fired lightning into the weapon! It exploded with a thunderous boom as she crushed the creature in front of her with a mighty swipe of her claw!

The goblins apparently had more than one weapon, however, and her bulky body was too slow to get out of the way in time. Thunderous rapports echoed across the muddy waste as plumes of mud and earth erupted around her. She felt pain as something impacted her right hip, but the injury was mild. In less than an hour, the village was in ruins. She sustained several minor injuries in the process, but everything around her was a smoldering ruin. She was sure that some of the goblins had managed to flee. They would remember her.

It felt good to fight and kill, although Lahamu was certain her mother would not have approved. Well, she was her own dragoness, and the goblins would think twice before treating her like a weakling.

She swaggered into the forest, trying to decide what her next move would be.

Lahamu knew almost nothing of the weapons the goblins used. She had no skill with crafting objects - very, very few dragons did. That was for the lesser races. She had seen some similar sorts of weapons before in the dwarven city, but she did not believe they were as powerful as the ones she had been assaulted with.

She does not feel comfortable traveling farther north or east. She has a lair established, and doesn't want to travel too far until this area is more firmly under her control.

Lahamu decided it was a good time to investigate the necromancer and his minions in the crypt city to the south. She still had not spoken with the elves in the coastal city, or really with the dwarves, but she felt the need to gather intelligence on what she assumed would be a powerful rival first. She traveled into the mountains and discovered a strange tower seemingly naturally formed of flat, gray stone. She wondered what else was hidden in what would become her domain.

Lahamu flew to the top of the tower where the strange figure was waiting. She decided to return respect with respect, and asked for the figure's name, and how she knew of Lahamu.

"I am Germanotta of the mountain, and this is my home. I do not need to travel far, because I learn much in my dreams. Your name and heritage are a delicate flavor that hovers around you.

I stay here and find comfort in solitude, although I am often pleased when that solitude is interrupted." The creature's mouth did not move when she spoke. Her words drifted on the winds, or maybe echoed in Lahamu's mind.

Lahamu asked her of the Necromancer that lived nearby.

"The demon prince Krazzek is known to me. He made an attempt to come here, but failed. He is not to be trifled with - the human civilization that thrived here for decades was crushed to powder beneath his heel. I would not attempt to cross him, dragon. You would pay most dearly for your hubris."

Lahamu thanks her for the offer but explains that the wounds are not serious. She is curious as to what the price would be, though.

"What you ask of me determines what I ask in return. To heal your wounds? Only that you stay here tonight and let me taste your dreams."

Crooked, crumbling buildings were overgrown with dead vines. Many such broken cities were scattered across the horizon. As she flew over the nearest one, the inhabitants began to stir. Columns of the walking dead shuffled out of stone tombs and rotting homes. Worse yet, she was on the edge of her flight range and would have to land inside the dangerous territory. She needed a plan.

Find a clearing. Avoid landing inside an actual deadtown. Try to keep moving and avoid getting stuck in with killing zombies, which can get out of hand fast.

If you're surrounded, find a big structure or terrain feature to hide on top of for awhile. Get up high for defense and to get a feel for the area.

Do any of the buildings look stable enough for you to land on? Maybe something made out of stone? You're pretty big and heavy, but if you can get a height advantage, you might be able to glide off somewhere farther away.

Also, they're not readying anything hostile looking yet, are they?

From this distance, do they appear to act like individuals, or flock together like dumb minions?

Lahamu decided that it was best not to confront the foes. She turned around, landing in the closest open space - crashing inelegantly into the muddy ground at the entrance to the city.

The horde of undead continued to advance toward her over the open ground. She could see that most of them shambled forward, but her sharp eyes picked out other sorts of corpses in the mix - some robed and moving with purpose, others armored and equally intelligent-seeming.

The terrain behind her was littered with strange holes and rifts in the ground, and dense forest was barely visible on the horizon to her right.

Lahamu retreated northwesterly. It would take her some time to traverse the distance - she will almost certainly not reach the forest until after nightfall.

She roared to the horde as it approached, "Those of you who can talk and reason. I come with no intent to harm, but instead to talk. Will that be possible?"

The advance slowed slightly.

She noticed a group of several undead - two with flaming hands, probably some sort of lesser spellcasters, an armored figure, and one wrapped in rotting crimson robes. The robed figure spoke, magically enhancing its high-pitched screeches.

"Parley? Very well. We will parley. What do you want, Dragon?"

The small group continued to advance through the horde.

Lahamu ceased retreating, and the undead advanced slowly. The small group continued to walk forward through the horde as they talked.

She began, her voice echoing over the wasteland.

The undead's screeches had no trouble reaching her.

"We are Krazzek's soldiers, risen from the dead to serve him. Perhaps he could use a dragon such as you in his army. He spreads his fingers across this land, but he is only the arm of the Dark Lord here, who seeks to spread his influence across the world entirely.

Lahamu would swear fealty to no one! She decided it would be best to bow out without causing trouble if she could. "I must decline for now," she said, but she was ready when the undead mages threw their first spells instead of replying.

A blast of lightning decimated all but the armored figure out of the group of casters, and she engaged the soldiers as he threw spells at her.

A second blast destroyed him completely. She annihilated those undead near her without damage, although the wound from the Death Knight's fireball smarted.

She had to retreat, however. More undead were closing in, and she could see casters in their ranks. They were far enough away for her to pick her route.

West, through the forest, or east, to the foothills so she could gain altitude and glide?

Then, to where? She had yet to visit the bustling coastal elven city to the southwest.

Lahamu retreated quickly into the woods as fast as she could. A large force of the undead followed.

The forest was huge, the trees towering even over Lahamu's massive body. It was the worst sort of environment for her fight in - slowing her and restricting her movement. Worst of all, she had to make her way around the trees, slowing and becoming rapidly disoriented.

She heard the undead as well, cackling and shambling, but then she began to hear other sounds. Screeching undead cries cut short, rustling leaves, and slowly, as she worked her way into the dense forest, the shambling of the hordes was replaced with silence.

She didn't know how long she wandered It should have taken her over a day to finally find her way out, but there was a swollen white moon overhead when she finally, made her way past the last of the giant trees.

A mysterious creature, graceful and pure white, shone under the moonlight. Lahamu heard its clear, melodic voice.

"Your pedigree holds sway with the forest creatures," the Unicorn said, "But I am more discerning. You have been parleying with gnolls and goblins, witches and undead. I remember your mother's name, but I will not have you bring ruin to my land. This city is under my guard, as well as the dragon Erinu in the mountains to the north.

I will leave you to your business for now, but watch yourself, Lahamu, for I will be watching you."

The Unicorn's voice, although achingly beautiful, was shot through with steel. Lahamu did not doubt that the tiny creature would attempt to make good on her promise. Lahamu was exhausted, but her injuries were minor. Mostly she needed sleep. She was uncertain of the best way to deal with the creature before her.

Lahamu decided to speak carefully to the unicorn, but she felt she should get her point across in any case.

"I felt that it was best to talk instead of fight, especially when there are creatures who bear me no ill will. I am new to this land, and seek to approach each situation with an open mind. I have treated those who were friendly to me well, and responded to those who have offered me violence in kind.

Things have been becoming clearer to me, and I prefer the elves to the other factions I have encountered."

The unicorn snorted daintily.

"I can see that you are tired, Dragon. Rest here and I will tend to your wounds. As I said, I see no reason to oppose you currently, but I will warn you again:

Evil creatures bring only evil, and keeping an open mind to malevolent beings is like opening the gates of your city to them. My only dealings with beings such as those is to crush their skulls beneath my hooves."

Lahamu laid down in the dewy foothills and let her exhaustion overcome her. A feeling of warmth and peace washed over her as the Unicorn's magic mended her minor injuries.

In the morning, she would have to decide exactly how to approach the city, and what she should be looking for when she got there.

The unicorn is the kind of ally one would be most cautious of, but better that than an enemy. Hopefully it can see the value in directing an evil force to less evil deeds as disrupting the gnolls warmongering would do.

You of course are above such things as the foolishness of the wicked or the self righteous. You simply ally with all those you can coexist with against those who you cannot, sway who are willing, subvert who resist and crush those who do not relent. This is the path to greatness.

I really wonder if killing all those Goblins was really necessary. Killing the guy who she talked to definitely wasn't, as he was no threat at all. Are dragons always so inherently murderous as Lahamu? Shouldn't we be above such petty killings?

Lahamu thanked the unicorn in the morning and left. She would travel into the mountains and then fly south to the gates of the city.

Lahamu was disinclined deal with the unicorn in the future. Lahamu preferred not to subscribe to such a black and white worldview and limit her options in such an arbitrary way.

She preferred not to make an enemy of it - it was a powerful spellcaster, in any case.

Lahamu's plan to fly down into the mountains didn't go exactly as planned - when she was climbing among the craggy peaks, she encountered another dragon!

"Greetings and well met," the dragon said, "I am Erinu, dragon of the mountains. I have an agreement with the people of Gullsport where I provide them with quality protective service in exchange for a reasonable tribute."

She paused, but Lahamu didn't know exactly how to respond. Erinu didn't give her much time before she continued.

"And don't think I'm trying to bleed them dry, either! My rate is far cheaper than what they'd have to muster for a force of my strength! That's the power of the private sector!"

She grinned.

Lahamu Approached Erinu asking the other dragon about Krazzek and the local lay of the land. She explained that she wasn't there to take Erinu's job - but she wished to know more about Gullsport, and perhaps how much tribute Erinu received from it.

"Krazzek and his undead are not something I am well equipped to deal with," said Erinu, "I mostly protect the city from pirates that could sail from the ocean, or gnoll or goblin raiders that would cause trouble. I was approached by one of Krazzek's minions, but I refused his offer. Turning over your client is just bad for business, and I deal equitably with those I have an obligation to. As for how much I am paid for my quality services," She paused, hiding her snout behind the fan on her tail, "A lady has to keep some secrets. I can't having you try to undercut my prices, after all."

Lahamu walked closer to Erinu, moving her tail to the side and whispered, "Tell me about the market liquidity in Gullsport," in the serpent's ear.

Erinu quickly backed away, seeming a little flustered. "Let me tell you a little about Gullsport. The archmage Fannaguath is the one I interact with. He is a spokesman for the community as a whole, although as a trade town along the coast, small businesses thrive and prosper, and I've convinced them to shy away from unions for their workers. Equitable labor laws are a more efficient way of regulating markets with minimal constraints. They know me as 'Windscale' there. It's a trade name I've been using."

Lahamu indicated that she wished to offer solidarity with Erinu against Krazzek.

"Excellent!" Erinu said, and they shared the locations of their respective lairs.

Lahamu took off and flew down to the gates of Gullsport. The walls were thick stone, and masses of siege weapons bristled from the walls on both sides. The tall masts of fat treasure ships sat in the harbor, waiting for their turn to but and sell in the enormous marketplace. A robed figure stood on the walls, holding his hand out in greeting to Lahamu.

"Welcome, mighty dragon!" he said, his voice magically amplified, "You grace our humble city with your presence, I am awed by the beauty and majesty of your body! How may the people of Gullsport assist you?"

You need to figure out how kinky she is before doing anything truly outrageous, if she's just into more vanilla stuff that's fine too.

Endearing orca-dragon-mode, go!

"Charmed, sir." Curtsy, or try a close approximation to it. "As you have likely figured, I am a newcomer to this area. My name is Lahamu, and I am here visiting as a mere sight-seer. "Windscale" mentioned your lovely city and recommended that I stop by."

Lean over to the side a little like you're trying to peer at something behind him. "I must say that she hadn't mentioned how fortified you were. I'm most impressed." Refocus your eyes on the talking guy. "If you truly wish to aid me, there is but one thing I might request of you. That I may be honored by receiving a tour of your magnificent city of Gullsport."

Realize that they may have no streets large enough for a proper dragon tourist such as yourself. "Unless doing so would disrupt your business of course, I have no intention of becoming a burden."

Well shucks, such nice words. Makes you beam with pride. Too bad Erinu didin't see that. Explain that you're just checking out the lay of the land and getting a feel for where everyone is standing. Tell that you feel Krazzek could be a real menace and you offered mutual protection against him to Erinu. Once you've found your place mayby mutually beneficial trading would be in order.

Probably those elves in the north at the swamp since they're the only ones without protection. Beset by gnolls that were kept in check by goblins. The goblins you so carelessly destroyed, women, children, everybody. Certainly nothing bad could be happening there right now. Realize a huge mistake and that it might be time to hurry the fuck back.

Lahamu attempted to be charming. It seemed to her that the most beneficial course of action would be to befriend the elves here. Besides, they obviously respected her, as well they ought.

"Charmed, sir," she said, fanning her wings and attempting to look demure, "As you have likely figured, I am a newcomer to this area. My name is Lahamu, and I am here visiting as a mere sight-seer. 'Windscale' mentioned your lovely city and recommended that I stop by."

She approached, looking at the massive siege engines lining the walls. "I must say that she hadn't mentioned how fortified you were. I'm most impressed. If you truly wish to aid me, there is but one thing I might request of you. That I may be honored by receiving a tour of your magnificent city of Gullsport."

The mage grinned someone uncomfortably. "Unfortunately, our city is not designed with someone as magnificent as you in mind, and I feel we would not be able to adequately accommodate you, even for a tour. As you can see, we have magnificent harbors, and get good trade from the west. We were here before the human empire fell to Krazzek and his evil army of undead. We are fortunate to have Windscale protecting us to the north, and the unicorn to the east. Otherwise, we would likely have been overtaken as well."

Lahamu expressed how impressed she was with the magnificent city, and how she was allied with Windscale against Krazzek.

"Well, I am The archmage Fannaguath, and I offer my support and alliance against Krazzek as well, although we are incapable of moving against him and mostly focus on the defense of our city."

Lahamu thanked him before traveling north. She flew across the northern gulf and decided to check in with the dwarves before planning her next move.

The dwarves greeted her when she landed.

"Mighty Lahamu!" an armored dwarf shouted, "It has been several weeks since you left from your cave! We hoped you would grace us with your presence! We have a wagon with finely crafted dwarven goods worth some 500 gold that we have been saving as tribute for you in the hope that you would visit us. How can we help you this fine evening?"

It was somewhat difficult for Lahamu to hear him. The dwarves had no mages, and therefore had no way to magically enhance their voice.

Lahamu had now visited every group of people and discovered some hidden features of the landscape. She had a good idea of the interplay between the races, and needed a plan on how to begin carving out a happy, prosperous domain for herself.

Tell them that you might need their aid in the future to outfit some minions. Naturally you turn to them because dwarves are the finest craftsmen in existance.

Once you're done dealing with the dwarves lets go back to the gnolls and subjugate them, for their own good of course. That damn lakelobster isn't good for them, our benign rule would benefit them far more than the current state of affairs.

Would not leaning in closer to the dwarves assist in hearing them? I like their attitude. They had a tribute set up already, are respectful, fully expected your visit and wish to serve.

Personally, I like the idea of being the patron of the dwarves *and* the elves. They are both within gliding range, and on friendly terms with eachother. We should discuss an ambush against the creature in the lake. Some ranged support should ensure a victory with minimal injury.

First order of business however would be graciously accepting the tribute of the dwarves, saying that we met favorably with their allies the elves as well, asking them to speak of themselves, and for news of the area near your cave since your journey started. There is no need to apologize for not arriving at the dwarves when they expected it. We had our reasons (we didn't think they would be friendly to dragons) And actually, we should be somewhat cautious when approaching the dwarves and their tribute. Wait do we even have a hoard yet for them to lust after? I am unsure if they would have any reason to act against us. Perhaps they could assume we did anyway, but still let us not be insulting. Examine the tribute as if you were checking its quality (actually DO check its quality). I would like to have a relationship with the dwarves based upon respect more than worship.

Don't say that quite yet. If you have minions, then you can come to negotiate trade. Plus this sounds too much like a demand.

Those guys are just precious, and made such a nice welcome for you. I would spend the night over like you did with the elves, go with the same spiel you gave the elves about not taking things you haven't earned (you will have plenty of chance to earn much as a protector later on). Don't tell them they are the last ones you visited, just say you were sight seeing and are flattered by such a warm welcome.

The demon possesses great magic and even his minions are a threat to you because you AREN'T a magical dragon and he just wants servitude, he might have magics to force such on your mind.

Ideas:
1. Check out the other goblins tribes, that first one was hostile but the rest might be more reasonable.
2. You can ally with the dwarves and swamp elves and tell them you wish to attempt to "civilize" the gnolls and maybe goblins as well.
That means conquering the gnolls / goblins, protecting them from undead, but laying down the law (no kidnapping other races, no eating them, no killing them, return all current captives...). Maybe unification is not feasible, but its worth at least the attempt. The elves and dwarves don't conquer, instead set yourself to be a "revered mother", in a few generations they will end up doing what you will simply out of sheer adoration.

Maybe it is impossible to civilize the gnolls, in which case you need to choose between enslaving like a tyrant or slaying them and unifying the "good races", but it doesn't make sense for such a thing to be true. A tyrant-seer, a good dragon loved by all who is also a conquerer, and conquerer hero so to speak, seem to be the best thing to be.

anyways, at least give the gnolls a chance, a few generations under your tutalage, plus experiments such as finding really nice couples of various races that live a bit far off from civilizations with an open mind and bringing them orphans (don't go abducting children, find genuine orhpans with noone to care for them) of all races to raise together as siblings.

3. Learn magic from the elves! even if you are not naturally gifted in magic, you are still a dragon and your lifespan is long. A magically gifted dragon would be naturally immune to hostile magic, you would have to train and learn to protect yourself from spells (such as the fireball one who singed you).

4. Might as well learn about craftwork from the dwarves, at the least so you could teach minions of your own, a dragon must be knowledgeable of all things.

5. To protect your people from the undead, set scouts and when they come sink their ships by standing on the shore and sniping them with lightening and whatever magic you would have learned since.

6. It might be possible to venture further out, much further, and see what is there beyond the horizon... we don't have to limit ourselves to this area.

Now, the above are all ambitious goals, and time consuming. I am thinking a unified front here.
Kill the lake monster, you could just teach the elves and dwarves that all it takes is giving it cows to earn reprieve, but you might as well start your gnoll conquest with a show of force. Plus if everyone is giving it cows the undead will find out too and then it useless... plus you will be the protector now. The question is whether or not you also take the goblins, or just the gnolls at first. Just gnolls is easier.

I say we let the goblins be for now, spend a generation trying to civilize the gnolls while learning magic from swamp elves and crafts from the dwarves. Relocate your lair to be on the side of the lake on D2 facing the gnolls. Get food from the lake (since you are used to eating from the sea, should be close enough). slay the lake monster, visit the dwarves and elves on occasion for good relationships (perhaps the dwarves can help you build a launch ramp allow you to start gliding from each of the 3 spots). You are essentially the patron of the dwarves, swamp elves, and gnolls. Suggest to the dwarves and swamp elves that you shall be their patron, but rather then annihilating the gnolls you wish to attempt to civilize them, relocate to the suggested spot on the map and keep the undead at bay while learning.

Learning should prioritize (in order).
1. Mind defense magic.
2. Body defense magic.
3. Offensive magic.
4. Other magic
5. Mundane crafts from dwarves.

Have both swamp elves and dwarves send full time teachers for you, spend most your time in gnoll village, visit the swelves (swamp elves) and dwarves on occasion for better relationships.

If you wish to be more ambitious (or perhaps if the goblins are much much nicer to you now and you take pity on them) then you can check on them too... The plan would protect them as a byproduct and might as well make sure they are grateful for it. Have scouts anticipate movements of the undead and engage them on demand. You could also inform the unicorn on your experiment, appeal to its better nature and set a deadline (aka, give me 3 generations and you shall see a marked improvement) and ask for a closer alliance, he and the elves shall be your main healers for any injuries you suffer in combat (of which I expect there shall be many) and could assist in combating the undead... oh, and perhaps teaching some holy magic that can better harm the undead.

Lahamu inspected the offering. A finely crafted spear, gold, gems, some ornate bauxite statues and works of art. It was probably close to 500 gold in value. Lahamu's cave was currently empty - she had no horde whatsoever.

She began to tell the dwarves that she had yet to earn their trust, so it wouldn't be proper to accept their tribute, but she could hear grumbling from the locals peering from their strongholds, and the dwarf that had spoken earlier piped up.

"You must accept our tribute, Mighty Lahamu! We have prepared it expressly for you, and it would be a grave insult to our craftsdwarves if you were to refuse.

Seeing as how she was attempting to make the dwarves her ally, she felt it best to accept.

It seemed like she had two major options readily available for future expansion. She could either attempt to forge an alliance between the dwarves and the swamp elves, gather soldiers, and then attack the gnolls and Gnaws Bones with an allied force, or she could go and attack Gnaws Bones alone and attempt to begin her empire with the gnolls.

She was not skilled at all in magic, but could probably learn a little if she spent the time studying, however, she could only learn one type of magic, so she would have to choose wisely. The swamp elves used elemental sorcery, dealing with balance and nature. The gnolls used some form of shaman magic, calling on spirits, and the southern elves used arcane magic, dealing directly with raw forces.

It was something to think about.

Dragons did not mate for pleasure. Dragons mated when they felt ready to create an offspring. Usually, an errant male would impregnate a female, who would raise the child alone. Lahamu had not concept of sexual desire or lust.

So, Lahamu gained 500 gold for her horde, but had no followers. She had to decide whether or not to work with the elves and dwarves, or strike out alone and attempt to defeat Gnaws Bones.

The goblins, she would ignore for now. She had wiped that one village off the map, but there were many, many more spread across that area.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Ally with the dwarves and elves, but tell them you wish to attempt to civilize the gnolls (you really do) rather then merely exterminate them. then conquer the gnolls yourself and civilize them.

Magic: learn more about what those 3 kinds entail (and if there are any other kinds) before comitting

She glided across the lake, landing at the sacrifice point. Firing lightning blindly into the murky depths would accomplish nothing, and she knew of no other way to lure him out. It would be best to come up with a plan. Currently, the cages were empty and there were no gnolls in sight.

Instead of grabbing livestock, we could just wait around until his feeding time, then challenge him. (We should make sure to stand a fair distance away when doing so, as we likely have the better ranged attack.) If we want to convince the gnolls not to go around attacking people, doing a proper challenge rather than some kind of sneak attack would be a good start at that. (That and we don't have much to gain from ambushing rather than directly challenging).

Challenge properly, but do so ahead of schedule.
Try rounding up some wild game for the cages.

Hopefully it's vulnerable to lightning, since it was billed as a "good at killing large things" attack when we chose it. If you can get it while it's in the water it's fried (according to Bioshock and innumerable first person shooters anyway).

Say, that brings up a few questions. What is Lahamu's diet and how much of it does she need? Is it a few hundred pounds of meat a week, or is she fueled by ambient magic and sunlight and the whispered dreams of orphans?
And is Lammy immune to electricity?

Ambush it and slay it. If you can, try to draw it out of the way... put most of the cattle away from the water so it has to come out of it to reach them. Then jump it when its feeding and on dry land.

Gathering livestock is redundant when he already comes up to the surface at regular intervals to be fed by the gnolls. No point putting in the effort to catch or steal livestock to do something that would happen anyway.
Challenging Gnaws Bones at his feeding time then would:
A) Show your strength to the gnolls (presumably a lot of them are there when they feed him)
B) Set an example for the gnolls of not ambushing neutral people (we are still trying to get the gnolls to ally with the elves/dwarfs, right?)
C) Cost you little. Gnaws Bones does not seem to have any ranged attacks, so if he stays in the water we can shoot at him until he comes out.

Shying away from the water, she retreated south, avoiding the gnoll villages. For the first time in her life, Lahamu tasted defeat. And her own blood. She knew she could have won. Heal, rest, and try again with a different tactic.
Perhaps poisoned cows next time, lie in wait in hiding, get elf wizards to confound him as they do normally, drop something heavy and sharp on it from high above, and/or aim for the claw first to prevent his snap attack or the face for maximum damage. Or get an enchantment cast on you before the fight by the elves to protect against his claw air pressure attack.

Ok, we need healing... you can just rest where you are, do you think a night of rest at this very spot would heal much? You could also fly back to the elves or to the unicorn.
You told the elves and dwarves to be ready to assist you before flying off to here, if so it might be prudent to stop them from doing anything just yet, so you can't afford to spend too many days resting here. Also if they see you in current condition which might not look too impressive.

I am thinking, rest now for one night. in the morning clean yourself and return to the elves to tell them to hold on the attack. that the fight was a draw leaving both of you injured, but neither permanently injured. Healing and a better plan of attack is needed.

AND they will have to exterminate the gnolls (which you could have done easily anyways) because gnawed bones WILL heal. And when it does, without gnolls feeding it, it will get more aggressively predatory and you will have to kill it anyways.

I thought he would just throw boulders if he had a ranged attack. Not use magic to make pistol-shrimpery work in air. I think we are lucky he wasn't a giant mantis shrimp though. Then he would have just ran up and punched out head off.

How often can we use our breath attack when we are not stunned?

I didn't even realize he was one...
He probably didn't "use magic", rather whatever magic made him into a kaiju also make it work... kinda like how Lahamu is shooting coherent lightening without "using magic"
