An intellectual society does not blindly plunge into exploration. We have sent several probes to the planet, but for some strange reason they all end up being destroyed before landing. The onboard sensors didn't indicate overheating, so superstitions arose of some kind of corrosive gas in the atmosphere. Given my species cyborg nature, that's quite frightening.

From what we were able to observe before the probes destruction, Jhalk is heavily forested. rocky mountains exist in the north and south. Manipulator astronomers do not know if there's any fauna on Jhalk.

As for me, I came from the Gorge on the Eastlasorunian planet, Snow. I wasn't anythign significant until the "Temples of planet Trance" revealed a prophecy which I supposedly filled... somehow.

Given the randomness of thought, manipulator spacecraft still use digital/analogue control schemes. This particular ship is an N.S.S Commander model, with a name of Joice. It's not only a space craft, but it can also traverse through air and water! It's powered by 2 nanostars, as all Commanders are. They shouldn't burn out for another hundred years or so.

My partner is a Protosal of the planet K-Ze in the neutroverse. She, along with lots of her kind, decided to flee their planet to escape the Macid epidemic there. The plague has been taken care of, but the protosal don't seem to want to leave. Her hard exoskeleton will be very useful if Jhalk happens to be inhabited by animal life. She is also very good with plants, as most protosal seem to be. Being the only protosal in the astronomy guild, she was chosen for this mission.

I keep forgetting what her name is... Dang these extracultural titles! What was it!?

>>Any other planets in the system with it? Moons?

Sure, there's plenty of planets in the Microverse. In fact, there are 15 "moons" of eastlasoruna! Then the Breeding Grounds (which we just past) and it's 4 moons. Jhalk is all on it's lonesome, though. No massive clumps of dust and rock love it enough to fall into orbit. Poor planet.

As to my position and talents... Well, I can sing pretty well! And I'm good with people, I suppose. Pertaining to the mission, however, my duties include piloting Joice (the ship), and "conquering whatever force shrouds Jhalk from exploration." As the General put it. My goal right now is to enjoy such an exotic trip to a planet that little is known about... and come back alive. I've got a clutch of eggs back on Snow, and Mistress would kill me if I didn't make it back to see them hatch!

After checking your injuries and fixing what you can, try and get as far away from the crash site as possible. Whoever shot you down might think you're dead, but they're still going to send out a search party to inspect the ship, and you're in no condition for an encounter like that.

I wrap my left arm with some gauze and find the radio. Then i go to check on Domino. She seems to be out cold, and even poking her with a stick down' help! I can't possibly carry her; she weighs a ton! I don't think we're stocked to make a stretcher, so I'll have to wait until she wakes. If she wakes.

There appears to be a ramp leading up to the top of a cliff in front of me. Behind the ruins of our ship is a waterfall which falls into a little gorge. A weird artifact is also lying on the ground.

What do?

Hmm... can you read that sign? If not, I'm sure someone around here can. But it proves that our foe is one of the most ruthless and cunning... the Japanese. The only way to fight them is to nuke them from orbit. Or something. Anyway, yeah, examine the artifact and then let's see if we can find where you clothes went. Also let's hope Domino wakes up soon, as in all likelihood whoever shot you down is soon to dispatch a force to the wreckage. Cheers!

No, I cannot read the script on the wall. It is unlike anything I've ever seen! Well... Kinda similar to the writing in the Trance temples. But I can't even read THAT!

I pick up the artifact. It appears to be some form of compass... Though, why it has the radiation symbol I have no clue. The readouts, surprisingly enough, are in Fuzic Standard, a script I can read! The grey display on the top says "Destination: Rhoge Tree,' the display on the side appears to be a list of names. Other destinations, perhaps? There also appears to be a logo: "KAZA."

Right now the needle of the compass is pointing in the general direction of the STAIR CASE leading to the top of the cliff.

Hmm... I don't know what any of these places are about. But, apparently, the symbols next to their names indicate which people make up the primary population. Given the logo, I'd say that the Kaza made this compass.

Domino lets out a groan, but doesn't seem to be fully awake.

[btw, there's no japanese in this quest. No humans. I just used japanese characters on the sign 'cause I didn't want to make up a script.]

Technological cultures may be a bit biased against outsiders but should be somewhat socially mature, so going to this Rhoge Tree place doesn't sound like a terrible idea. I'd avoid the Pirade peoples based solely around the fact that their name is very close to 'Pirate' and further that one of their territories has the word 'thief' built right into it. Anyway, this'd be much more useful if it also told us how far away each place was and not merely its direction. For all we know, Rhoge Tree might be the furthest location on the list, but I guess we gotta start somewhere. Rub Domino's shoulder, then shake her gently, progressing to a more hearty shaking and then perhaps a slap to the face. Or a lick. Something that'd activate her fight-or-flight response, hopefully. With your left arm broken and her weighty suit, not much hope you can lift/drag her anywhere safe. But in the offchance, is there a place you think that would offer a good bit of cover from anyone heading this way? Brush, caves, something subtle?

Is it really smart to go right were the compass is taking you though? For all we know you could have landed on someone heading that way, and a couple strangers showing up with a person missing that should have been coming could pose quite an issue.

If we go anywhere right now, I propose Nork instead. It's still kaza but less of a chance of the above issue.

If we waltz into a place with a concentrated population of one people, we'll be quite obvious. Wouldn't it make more sense to go to one of the diversified areas? At least there we'd only be other creatures in the crowd, right?

Though.. We are in a forest, and the two Kaza places talk about trees. For all we know, these two Mixed-people locations might be hundreds of miles away! Though, as we were crashing I do remember a fairly large body of water. Perhaps not THAT far, then.

"The fuck is that thing?" Domino asks, pointing at the compass.

Well... Now we know relative distance to places. Looks like the resort place is closest, but it also appears that the Great Seas location is a city. Perhaps we could find some help repairing our ship in a city? Would also be incredibly useful for getting information about this world!

"My gut says that we should head to Great Seas; it's a city, and has a diverse culture. Maybe we can find someone to help with the ship?" I respond.

"Sounds good enough to me. Lets check the holds to see what we can salvage to bring."

To carry things with, we have an ORANGE BACKPACK, our HANDS (though, who wants to travel while carrying things with their hands?), and my stomach (which counts because manipulators can't digest things unless asleep).

Currently in the inventory we have the COMPASS, and the RADIO.

This is all we salvaged from the hold.

Necessities-wise, we have a box of FOOD (which is too big to carry, but could be broken up), some FIRST-AID SUPPLIES, and spare jumpsuits for me (RED and BLACK).

For weaponry, we have an IMPERIAL PISTOL with plenty of rounds. There's also a PLASMA SWORD, and a SCALEROD BATTLE RIFLE. The latter also has plenty of rounds.

There's also a box of science stuff, none of which we really need.
>>

Well you'll want to pack enough food for at least a couple of days, more if you have the room for it. The medical supplies are a given and need to go with you, as for the clothing, if you feel you need it I'd change into a new one before leaving, the spare room can be used for more food. As for weapons, I'd say one for each of you, perhaps the sword for Domino and the battle rifle for yourself. Maaybee take the pistol as a sidearm if you really feel you'll need it

Alrighty. We pack up several food stuffs into the bag, along with the box of medical items. I also put the radio in the backpack. I put the extra jumpsuits into a plastic bag and swallow them down.

Weaponwise, I equip myself with the rifle, and give the sword to Domino. For good measure, I throw the hand gun into the backpack, also.

Before going, i decide to activate the tracking beacon on the ship. So we can find it again, easily. Then we head up the hitherto neglected ramp (which the compass points towards) and are faced with a path going into the forest.

"You ready?" Domino asks.
"Yeah. Lets go." I answer, and stride forward.

Uhg... We've been walking all day. It appears that we're making progress, though. We are almost at that kaza settlement, and the branch off to the Resort...

My feet are killing me; stomach too, being full of plastic-wrapped jumpsuit.

The forest around us is really dark and dense. We started carrying a glowy mushroom for light. Domino has to carry it, though, as I had a tendency to... rub it on myself. The thing must be radioactive; it feels really good to hold it.

We've encountered no travelers, strangely. There have been several sightings of broken off trees with smoking stumps, however. I don't know what to think.

More casualties of whoever it is that shot you down?

If so, the shots were either fired towards or away from the settlement. It's hard to tell which one it is from this vantage point, though.

Either way, expect either a smoldering crater or a small fortress of hostiles. Most likely the former. Which may or may not have hostiles scavenging about.

Interesting. Quite potentially the planet or its resident lifeforms are under attack by some third-party. We walk along for about 20 more minutes before coming to a break in the trees above.

"What's that?" I ask, looking up at the sky.

"It looks like a column of smoke," Domino replies. She pulls out the compass and takes a look at the map. "It appears to be coming from the Kaza settlement..."

Smoke means fire, and that much fire in the forest could mean danger. Perhaps we should go check it out? If this place truly is under attack, as the smoldering tree stumps around us would indicate, then people could be in trouble. Domino and I could save lives by showing up to help.

Then again, it could be that everyone is already dead and it'd be a waste of time. Or a trap, with us stumbling upon whatever set the place ablaze.
>>
No. 274299 ID: 8d8786

Unlikely to be a trap. And if you arrive too late, there will still probably be stuff for you to salvage. Your biggest worry is arriving in time to help, since that'll mean you'll have to be all heroic and noble and put yourself in harm's way for strangers. Ugh. Use whatever stealthy maneuvers you've got to check out the situation, see whether or not there's anything living up ahead, and ultimately gather as much information about the scenario as possible. The more we know, the better our decisions will be.

I have to agree with this sentiment. To a degree. Playing heroics is nice and all, but two crash survivors on a foreign planet with limited supplies do not exactly make the best hero material.

The still-smoking stumps from 20 minutes prior implies that the aggressors are still nearby, most likely. Approach the scene as sneakily as possible to observe the unfolding events ahead. Preferably a little ways off the main path, if possible.

I creep up through the bushes on a little rise at the edge of the clearing where the big, burning tree was. My first thought?

That's a freakin' big tree.

Judging by those scorch marks on the ground to the left, I'd say that either there was a building there, or an aircraft that uses jet propulsion systems took off from there. I think it was the latter, as there don't seem to be any hostiles here, and I doubt these people would set their tree and village on fire to such an extent by themselves.

It seems safe... But should we approach?

If the people seem to be entirely trying to put OUT the fire, then go ahead and help (as long as you aren't wasting any of your non-renewable resources to do so), and if they're trying to START fires, then just sit back and gather intelligence.

Looks like some of them might be attending to the wounded. But, yeah. Watch them briefly to determine if the little stick figure people are contributing to the carnage or not before engaging.

From the looks of it, they're trying to put out the flames. They seem to be struggling... Who uses a garden hose for this?

This creature is quite strange looking. I wonder which one off the compasses list it could be?

"What do you see?" Domino asks.
"Go look around the other side of the building," I whisper back.
"Hmph!" She grunts loudly.
"Ssshh, they might hear!" I say.

"Crap he heard you!" I yelp as the bird-thing looks this way.

"Hoi hoi!" It yells at us, along with a few other unintelligible gibberish which I assume is the native tongue.

We've been caught, what do I do!?

You wouldn't happen to have anything to help put out the fire, would you? Because it seems like these people are trying (inadequately) to put out the fires that someone else (and more malicious) started. It'd be a gesture of good faith were you to help them, and we could utilize that good will earned later.
