I hear a clatter somewhere above, followed by a rising hum, and the elevator begins to descend. The light of the hallway disappears, blocked off by the ceiling, plunging us into complete darkness.

But even before my eyes have a chance to adjust, a glow radiating from the gap between the floor and the shaft’s wall signals that we’re about to pass another level. I press Kira and myself against the side of the elevator, hoping this is enough to avoid being spotted.

Huh. I think this is it – third floor. But the lights aren’t on. And I can smell smoke – something’s burning nearby.
>>
No. 307685 ID: f0e3ae

there is light coming from the right... either this is an exist and the smoke comes from elsewhere. Or there is a fire there. Well, nothing to it but sneaking a peak. Make sure to look both ways and not be spotted by any dorfs

What did you just see? Also, stay low. Shouldn't be much of a problem for kobolds, but the breathable air is down low in a fire situation.

Is it just me or all of those dwarves seem a little.... unhinged.

They're all Ecstatic of course. This must be a really good fort.

Now, there are several reasons for something being burning. It could be a blacksmith, or an ashery, or even a kitchen. That could even be a Fire Spirit.

Listen for a moment. See if you can pick out any unusual sounds.
>>

before peeking out, lets consider things for a bit.

you passed what seems to be living quarters, cistern works, the hospital zone, the noblesmen room, the kernels and possibly the zoo/animal storage, a storage room or maybe throne room to reach where you are.

you must be near the mine shafts. the fire could be from a blacksmith as much as it could be from a lava pit.

try to sniff the air a bit more. there should be a storage of some sort around, with luck you can get a shortcut to the workshops from there.

No. 307760 ID: 6a42ab

Or its a lava trap, and pulling a lever could set it off

>What did you just see?

I… I don’t know. There was something… off about the helmet that handler was wearing.

>It could be a blacksmith, or an ashery, or even a kitchen

I know how these kinds of places smell, and this is different. The smoke has a greasy, faintly metallic quality – I’m almost certain that I haven’t encountered something like that before.

>stay low

Will do, though to be honest, the air isn’t all that full of smoke.

>Listen for a moment. See if you can pick out any unusual sounds.

A repeating, irregular clatter. And quiet grunting. It’s coming from the same direction that the light is. Otherwise, nothing.

Once my eyes adjust to the lighting conditions, I risk pulling the door open a bit – it moves surprisingly easily and quietly, considering its weight.

No one in sight.

I peek around the side of the doors, To the right, the hallway continues for as far as I can see from this angle. The light – as well as the sounds I’ve heard - are coming from behind a partially open door several meters to the right.

To the left, the hallway ends abruptly with a double door.

the grease smell would be more related to coal and wood that magma.

considering what we have seen on the cages above, we may be a few steps away from a mad doctor. lets try not to sneak on anyone here and just find a way out.

i belive that the workshop is connected to a deposit of some sort, either lumber, coal or metal bars.

the lumber one would be closer to the outside unless its towercap, bituminous coal could be linked to external dig sites, but its a longshot. everything else should lead to a dead end.

It is. Smells sour. Probably wine.

>peek through the unlatched door

I leave Kira In the niche with the barrel and tell Her to stay put. As I creep closer to the door, the light flickers and changes constantly, as if someone, or something was moving in front of the source.

>Maybe a magma forge?

Magma forge? How would that even work? No, the soumds don’t sound anything like a forge, or manufacture. They seem familiar though. In fact, I’ve heard them countless times…

This could be a good thing! There is usually a barracks close to the entrance, though judging by its size this is probably not the main barracks...

For now, go check out that barred door that's across from the elevator.

Examine the double door. Big doors might mean a route to the main entrance or trade depot.

I back away from the barracks, returning to where I left Kira. She also looks interested in the barred door.

Or maybe it's just something that she happens to be looking at right now, I don't know.

You still have the knife, right? If it's barred the. Stick the knife in between the doors and lift the bar up. Have a place in mind to hide if it's too loud.
>>
No. 322120 ID: 374686

whispering "wanna escape with us" sound about good now.

if the smell you had was wood, then its likely you are very close to exit. just the chaminee should take you to exit directly, and the barracks shoudl still have a pathway barredwith traps and crossbowdwarves, if not balistae catapult combos.

As I said, I know what wood smoke smells like, and this isn't it. Also, the smell actually got less intense near the barracks.

>>322086
There's no hinge. It's a sliding bar - made of solid iron, I think. Heavy, but I could probably pull it out slowly. Don't know how I'd stop it from hitting the floor once it was out, though.

>>322191
Can't hear anything other than the clatter coming from the barracks.

Kira continues to stare intently at the door.

"I don't suppose you know whether this leads to an exit?" I venture.
"I've been here," she says eventually.
"Really? Then what's behind the door?"
"Cages."
"What, like another storeroom?"
"No."
"Then... wait. A prison?"
"Yes. To hold those that fight."

I'm not sure how well than plan works when you're the nearest things to fight and also puny.

Might be better heading to another floor.

Ask if there's any other kobolds in there. Maybe we could team up with the other fighters.
>>

Find a way to set them free without getting hurt. That should cause quite a ruckus for the dwarves and give you a distraction while you make good your escape.
