Your name is Wite.

You are a Combat Engineer who has worked for GravTech for the past 5 years doing Weapons Research. You are on a dual mission: to find a world with resources suitable for Mining / Collection, with the possiblity of Colonization and do Prototype Feild Testing on your Recently Developed things.

In the Pilot's Chair is your longtime friend Raph, who you have known since your military days.

Using Cunning Negotiation and Swift Action you have managed to secure a possible planet location. the Fronteirsman who sold you the Starchart and planet location gave you a reasonable bargan due to unvertified documentation. the Planet in question is Life-Class with a glancing scan that reads of Large Deposits of MANY valuable Resources.

We have left the Enforcer Net and are well underway to the planet's Coordinates.

What shall you do?

Gather large quantities of iron or some such cheap dense metal and launch it at relativistic speed a few light-minutes away from the planet. Use a computer to plot its course, of course. It'll annihilate the planet, kill any pesky life, and free up ALL the planet for mining, not just the surface. Debris is easier to mine.

how difficult is it to travel between starship and surface ? if it is not difficult, make plans to secure the resources immediately; otherwise, prepare to establish a long-term camp at the most life-supporting surface location you can determine.

Unfortunately, even if that WAS a viable method of mining, this ship does not carry any means of gathering and projecting such mass. And it would both violate standard Astranian Protocol, and eliminate our secondary Objective as feasible. We really could use a secluded, out of the way planet for refugees to colonize.

>>395121
Raph has us on course, but how near or far we are, you don't know.

>>395124
We should, barring any complications, be able to land on the surface, but you aren't quite sure of topology. And while setting up camp/base of operations wont be difficult its going to be quite hard to 'secure' all the planets resources with this tiny 4 passenger Vessel. We do have a pair of Orbital Defense Droids that can watch over the planet. but we really are just here to ascertain the amounts and types of resources we can use and then report back to GravTech. They will be sending the mining and colony ships.

Perhaps you should ask Raph of our ETA?

understood. go talk to raph about the eta and acquiring / processing additional information (like topography and hazard / resource indicators) about the planet when it is possible to determine. since it doesnt sound too difficult, turn up a report of anything your findings can show of interest regarding the resources and prepare to personally inspect one with a droid. we want this to be a good, not half-assed mission

Well then. you Sit down at the Co-pilot's seat and turn your console on from standby. You will suggest this plan of operation once we reach the planet. but since you dont know when that will be you ask-

Wite: "what's Our ETA, and how is the ship status?"

Raph: "Pretty good, we are ahead of schedule and have about a day before we reach the planet's system. As you know it is in a nebula so we will have to take an extra couple of hours to look for the planet. And the WanderingEye is at Optimal Performance. Our FTL Boosters are running at full power and we are making good headway. Scanners report no Pirates in immediate range, though it wouldnt be hard to stay out of range until we are in the nebula and ambush us if there were..." He looks at the Scanning Readout for a moment, "But if they were, i'm sure i would have gotten a blip or reading by now."
He continues checking readouts.

Ask anything else?

the scanning isn't muddy, we just aren't close enough to begin proper scans of the Nebula for this planet. as for pirates, I'm sure they would take great care not to be detected. We aren't running a top of the line ship here, its good, but it simply doesn't have the room or power to run the best equipment. and we might not be heavily armed but we certainly are something to be reckoned with, it is Raytech after all. and while i might not like them, i do share my fellow Astranians' view on them. They aren't the Number one producer for no reason.

in any case, the small border colony world we visited to get the map didn't have a large pirate presence, if we are attacked it shouldn't be from a frigate or higher. we are much to fast for that to be a problem right now, and they couldn't sneak up on us.

anyhow. hunger makes its presence felt and you go eat, nap and otherwise occupy yourself.

Raph calls you to the Cockpit for a view of our destination: the Wakka Nebula.

Raph: "We should reach it by the hour, Could you double check our equipment?"

Wite: "You've asked me that twenty times already, our equipment is good, lets just get to the nebula"

Raph agrees... And the ship Barrel's forward.

Wite: Raph! Get us behind them! I'll man the guns.
Raph: Raising shields, HOLD ON!
*Raph uses his flight training to its greatest extent, flipping the ship upside down*
*Wite aims the experimental GravBlast turret and FIRES*

Raph’s firing has disabled one of the pirate's guns, the other might have an engine breach on his hands. But your maneuvering isn’t prime and shields are at 75%.

OPTIONS:
Flee: You won’t make it to FTL but you can make it to the nebula and hide in there until you make repairs.
Fight: You still have a turret and front guns, but the starboard engine is leaking power, who knows what will happen with the EXPERIMENTAL TURRET.

Raph dives the ship into the nebula, using less of the main engines so they won't explode and setting the heading on a random changing vector hoping the pirates won't be able to follow. They don't seem to be.

Scan for the planet so you have some place to hide
or just find a spot roughly in the middle of the nebula and immediately start making repairs and hope they wont find you?

Scanning for a few minutes you find a mass and gravity formation that can only be a planet. Raph sets course and you are on your way.

The ship pokes out of the nebula into a pocket of space clear of the nebula’s gasses. In the middle hangs a planet. The Planet.

The ship settles into its landing struts as the boarding ramp descends.

Wite and Raph step out back and look around.

The ENGINE is letting out black smoke.
The LEDGE is just a bit larger than the ship and would make a good place to SET UP CAMP, it also heads farther north and south.
The LARGE TREES have branches overhanging and growing into the ledge your ship sits upon.
There is a PATH heading down the mountain into the UNDERGROWTH.

What shall Wite and Raph do?

The brown/gold colors have been added as they are proper for the setting, my intent wasn't to make this a color quest but I ended up adding more and more of it that it ended up being essentially colored. So now I will be doing full color for the rest of the Quest! :D

Little Nokkin Girl: “ARE WE THERE YE- WOAH! COOL! Those are HUGE trees! And why is the sky all funny colors?”

Yarrot Lady: “Raph what was all that noise? And why were you flying the ship all funny? Oh, we’re here.”

She ducks back into Raph’s bunk room only to bring it back out once more.
“Who was that I just heard?”

Wite: “Raph, get on the ship sensors and tell me what they say.”

>Raph dashes back into the cockpit and dives into a seat, examining the console. Wite looks into the sky as the sound of ship engines get louder but no ship presents itself, it must be behind the trees, which thankfully should be blocking their view of us.

Raph: “The sensors are still pretty garbled with all the distortions, but it looks like it’s not heading directly at us.”

>The noise shortly reaches it’s loudest before trailing away. The ship seems to be leaving.

>Now would be a good time to fix that engine. Should Wite tell Raph to do anything? or should we ask him why there’s a Nokkin kid here on the ship? I’m pretty sure Raph doesn’t have any kids and he’s not having any with Tnal, that’s for certain.

Raph comes back from the cockpit and speaks before Wite has a chance to say anything.
Raph: “Before you ask, yes, I know who our little stowaway is. She’s my niece, Sagenta-”
Sagenta: “HI!!!”
Raph: “-and she should be back on Cazaran with my brother. Though this does explain the excess food that’s gone missing, I mean even you Wite can’t eat THAT many ChocoBars-”
Wite: “I’ll have you know I’ve only eaten five choco bars since we left Cazaran.”
Raph: “There’s twenty gone, I don’t eat them. Tnal hates them, and if Sagenta here had eaten even ten of them, she’d have been sick, groaning and found a while ago. Speaking of which, where on earth were you hiding?”
Raph says turning toward Sagenta.
Sagenta: “Umm, in that locker with the spare space suits.”
>Wite at this point is content to let Raph deal with this. He begins to take of the side panel to see the damage.
>Thankfully it’s just a broken initiator and a lot of smoldering insulation, this would have caused problems if we had tried to take off, but it’s thankfully an easy fix, it should take about an hour.
Wite: “Raph, chew out your niece all you want, but could you start unpacking the Orbital Uplink so the OmniBot can bring it up higher on the mountain? We’ll need one deployed to help counter all this interference. The engine isn’t too bad, but it’s going to take an hour to fix. Tell Tnal that she can start her preliminary scans of the lifeforms in the immediate area.”
Raph: “Alright Wite”
>Raph relays the message to Tnal, our Doctor and Xenology Expert.
Tnal is a Yarrot from Yarrot-X (Squirrel type astranian). She was doing medical relief for a Cazaran Refugee camp when she heard about our mission she decided we needed medical expertise and someone who could tell us if the lifeforms were dangerous. I suppose when one gets a Xenology degree, one might as well use it.

>Raph, with his niece helping, gets the Orbital Uplink unpacked and has the OmniBot bring it farther up the mountain for deployment.
>Wite repairs the engine.
>Tnal starts her preliminary Bio Scan of the area.

*An Hour later, all these things are complete *

The group consists of: a Engineer, Champion/Soldier, Doctor/Xenologist, MediBot, OmniBot, child.
With the Orbital Uplink in place they can deploy the Orbital Defence Drones to guard against the pirates. And with the additional scanning power they can take more accurate readings of things on the planet’s surface (and slightly under it).
But the BioScan of the surface will likely require a sojourn into the forest and having the Uplink will help keep in touch with the Ship. Though Wite really does want to make us of his SPECIAL EQUIPMENT.

>Wite, how many did you really eat? Ask how many the stowaway ate. Gotta keep track of your rations.
Wite: Hrm, I know I have a habit of snacking on things while I work and I’ve probably eaten far more than five now that I think about it… I guess I’d better go check. As much as these ChocoBars are delicious snacks, they also do actually count as Rations, having a nutritional component as part of it’s makeup…

>Wite goes to his cabin, turning on the light as he enters.

The room is very cluttered and not very clean, and it smells like week old unshowered Astranian… regardless of the ventilation system's efforts. Wite upon looking around finds 9 ChocoBar wrappers and 4 full unopened ChocoBars lying around the room and on the worktable. He takes the wrappers and throws them in his waste bin and pockets the uneaten ChocoBars.

On the worktable lies the fully complete GravBlast Rifle Mk 1, Wite’s first Experimental Weapon, and his suit helmet. Wite picks both up.

>Wite leaves his room and goes to check Sagenta’s hiding place to see how many ChocoBars are there.

Looking in the storage locker (which have a convenient handle on the inside for getting out) Wite finds 6 wrappers… There’s 1 missing.

>Wite it distracted from contemplating the missing ChocoBar by the Raphs’ arguing.

Raph: “I’m telling you Sagenta, you’re not coming with us out into the forest, we don’t have an environmental suit. And we don’t have Grav Boots your size so even if you wanted to you wouldn’t be able to keep up.”
Sagenta: “One of the robots can tailor one of those suits into one my size! And I can totally Ride a robot and keep up, AND! And, it could protect me from any ugly face monsters!”
Raph rubs his face in frustration.

>It’s clear that Raph doesn’t want to put his niece in danger, but there’s nothing wrong with what she’s suggested, in fact Wite feels that if he took a little time he could resize a spare pair of GravBoots to her size...

> Might as well - there's nothing stopping her trying to follow you anyway and at least you can keep an eye on her like this.
>Don't let your emotions get the better of you. Family or not, she might be useful.

Wite: Hrm. Yeah. This ship isn’t designed to lock people inside it… unless we’re in space… kind of. And things will be much safer if all of us are around. Not to mention the work will be done faster if we don’t have to leave any robots behind to watch her.

>Don't let your emotions get the better of you. Family or not, she might be useful.

Wite: I really do understand Raph’s need to protect Family. I do remember when I was a kid. I was always building stuff out of scrap and broken stuff. Not that I was very good back then but that didn’t stop me from trying. If nothing else she’s smaller than anyone here so if we need to have her examine a tight space or if she needs to hide she’ll have that working for her.

Wite: “You know Raph, I can resize some GravBoots and a suit to fit little miss Sage here… and she’ll be safer if we all are around to protect her. She’s also tiny so she’s easier to hide. The work will go faster if we don’t have to leave any robots behind to watch her and I’m sure she can lend a hand. Plus, when do any kids get to brag to their friends that they were on an alien world before they went to school? You really shouldn’t let your emotions control you like this.”

Raph: “Damn it Wite. I know you can resize those things, you’d have to be worse than a starting engineer to not do that! I was trying to-Oh whatever… Well, that’s said and done… and it’s not like the ship could keep her locked in anyway. Do it. And so help me, if she gets hurt I’m blaming you Wite!”

Wite nods in understanding. Raph goes and looks out the bay to the Forest to calm down a bit. Sagenta looks solemn for a moment until Raph has his back turned, then gets the most gleeful expression on her face.

Both have large quantities of life readings though we’re still too far away to get any distinct readings. >And of those spatial distortions nearby? finding what's causing those seems pretty urgent.
Wite: Hrm, getting rid of that distortion would be a good idea, but I wonder if those pirates haven’t found us because the distortions are masking our power signature. Maybe this could be a chance to control it to our advantage or modify our signals and scanners to avoid it so that it doesn’t affect us while it still affects them…
>Wite overlays the general distortion effects over the map and highlights the nearest center.
Wite: Oh, good. There’s a big distortion center just past the first tree, we can get to the bottom of this pretty quickly.

>The orbital uplink's up, so this trip is just to grab a bioscan, right?
Wite: Yes, but we will still have to do a orbital scan using the uplink for ground resource sampling, meaning we won’t have a full exact picture of what resources are on the planet but given the area around the uplink we’ll be able to create an average sampling relative to the rest of the planet, it won’t be optimal but without being able to penetrate the distortions or the time and effort needed to do a ground survey it’ll likely be the best we’ll be able to do. Unless we do figure out what’s causing the distortions and resolve that somehow we won’t be doing that.

Wite: So it looks like we’re going through the first tree, but should we head “north” - why is it that in quotes?
Wite checks the map settings and debug logs.
Wite: Oh, this world doesn’t have a magnetic north… and it doesn’t spin, nor orbit around a sun… So there’s no geological north. So the Compass assigned the axis relative to the galactic plane as north. Ok… Now where was I again? Right, we need to choose which way to go…

>Do we head “North” towards the dense vegetation zone?
>Do we head “East”, straight toward the open vegetation area?
>Do we head “South” and take a scenic route?
>Do we want to go to that lake?

>Do we also want to take a large supply of rations or a smaller supply and the Portable BioMass Processor?
