It took us awhile, but we finally made it to the village. We are very tired and very hungry. We should probably look for some food.

Also, we are a vagrant, but we already knew that.

We are on what looks like the village's main drag. There's an INN/TAVERN to our left (from which we stole our barrel), houses to the right, a BAKERY behind the houses in the town's main square, and a CHURCH behind that tree.

The BAKERY is closed... we got here in the middle of the night. Most of the shops are closed. There's probably lots of gar- FOOD inside.

Yeah, there's some garbage behind the bakery. We manage to rustle up some ROTTEN CARROTS and a WOODEN SPOON. We eat a carrot for now and save a couple more for later.

We've been on the road for a while, we think it might be the first moon of Ibaiaren. It's a little dry for this time of year.

"Good. First, I need you to gather some firewood, as we're almost out. There is a small forest about an hour's walk south of the village. It's just past the road. You can gather some there. If you need an axe, try asking the carpenter, he may lend you one."

"Second, I need you to purchase some vegetables from the market. I'll give you some silver pieces and a list of what I need. You should be able to find it all easily."

"And third, I want you to deliver a note to Lescaut, the baker. He's been distraught lately, and perhaps a kind letter will cheer him up."

"You may complete these tasks in any order... but they must all be finished by tonight. I'll be sending Manon with you to make sure you stay on task."

Note first. The baker needs to be cheered up so his bread will be good!

Then market. Then axe-chores. Don't think we need an axe, even, firewood is pretty simple to gather if there's a decently sized forest nearby. Plus, using dried and dead wood is infinitely better than using wet recently-cut wood.

>Note first. The baker needs to be cheered up so his bread will be good!

We take the SILVER PIECES and NOTE from Sister Martine and head for the bakery. Manon, the little acolyte we met last night, follows us.

It's mid-morning now, and the village is bustling. The bakery is across the square from the church, so it makes sense to stop there first... hopefully the baker's spirits will rise as quickly as his dough.

We knock at the door, but there's no answer. We try again; still no answer. The door is locked and no one appears to be inside.

"That's strange... Lescaut normally has this place open at the break of dawn..."

Looks like the baker isn't home.

>You don't happen to know how to pick a lock, do you?

We don't think we know how to do that. We don't have anything to pick the lock with anyway.

>Look through the windows/try to find an unlocked one.

Not much to see through the windows: the first floor is a normal kitchen and shop area. There are probably bedrooms on the second floor. Nothing out of the ordinary.

We begin looking for open windows when Manon interrupts.

"What are you doing? We can't break into his shop, it's immoral... and someone might see us..."
>>
No. 503738 ID: 91c1b3

We're trying to tell if Lescaut is at home and unwell, or away on a trip with no outside notice whatsoever. We can only find out by going inside or wasting time (best spent elsewhere) waiting.

Though we could just leave the note on the inside window sill or under the door, and check back once we've done other chores. (giving us a less busy time of day to enter if there's no change)

>leave the note on the inside window sill or under the door

None of the windows are open. We would have to break one. That would be efficient, but maybe we should come back later. We slide the note under the baker's door for now.

The town square is filled with merchants and townspeople doing their thing. It isn't long before we've collected everything we need from the list.

>Ask around about the baker in general. Anyone seen him, any visitors, etc.

While shopping, we ask around about the baker. Many of the merchants know and like Lescaut, and some of them have noticed how odd it is that his shop is closed today. We're told Lescaut is an older gentleman whose wife passed away some years ago. He lives in the bakery with his son, Rémy, and has little else to do but run his shop.

One merchant in particular seemed to be concerned for Lescaut's wellbeing: according to him, Lescaut and Rémy have been at odds for the past two months, which is causing Lescaut a great deal of stress.
>>
No. 503754 ID: f2c20c

The merchant adds that Lescaut's ailments have been mainly emotional, but that he may very well have fallen ill.

As for Rémy, the merchant claims no one has seen him today, but he usually hangs around at the tavern when he isn't with Sylvie, the carpenter's daughter.

With our errand done, we thank the merchant and leave.

We could go do that, but the situation regarding the missing baker is distressing in its own right. What should we do next?"

Indeed, what should we do next? Shall we collect the firewood or investigate further?

Manon isn't really a companion. More like our overseer.

Manon agrees to take the vegetables back to Sister Martine. We already spent the silver pieces, so we don't need to be supervised anymore. Not like we were planning to run off with the money, but we understand the precaution.

>INVESTIGAAAAAAATE!
>go to the carpenter

Some locals point us in the direction of the CARPENTER'S HOUSE. We don't know where to look for his daughter, SYLVIE, but her father's house is a start. Besides, we need to ask him for an AXE anyway.

We think that's him outside carving something. What should we do?

Start the conversation asking about the axe, but definitely bring up the baker, and the baker's son, and then lead onto asking if he's seen his daughter lately. She has the best chance of knowing where Rémy is, who has the best chance of knowing if the Baker is alright.

We exchange greetings. The carpenter introduces himself as BRUNO.

We ask about borrowing an axe. He's unsure at first, but when we mention Sister Martine he agrees to let us borrow an axe. He goes into his house and returns with an AXE, which we just kinda hold onto.

>bring up the baker, and the baker's son, and then lead onto asking if he's seen his daughter lately

Bruno scoffs. "So that old miser Lescaut and his deviant son have gone missing? Good riddance I say!"

>"So I heard your daughter is friends with that Remy kid"

Bruno becomes agitated. "Yes, despite my best efforts, my Sylvie still wastes her time with that layabout. In fact, I haven't seen her today... if you find her, let me know."

It looks like Sylvie isn't here. Should I ask him anything else or move on?
