Huin: “Why are you leaving, this ship could be the key to becoming rich beyond what we used to think was possible.”
Tapog Captain: “I would rather be alive and enjoy what riches I have then killed in this derelict ship trying to make my fortune in some alien space, if you want to stay then that is your choice, you would be one less mouth to feed anyways.”
Huin: “I think you are letting your fear of the unknown get in the way of seeing the profits we could make with the riches of-“
Tapog Captain: “If you want to stay on this broken ship with that so called captain and space demon then that is your choice but do not insult my sense of profit, you will see the error in your judgment soon enough.”

Huin: "I tried to convince them to stay but after that incident with that monster thing that came out of nowhere and that space demon you decided to keep on the ship I'm more surprised they took the time to load their half of the cargo on our, well I guess now their ship."
Huin Vu-Chtik is an ambitious young creature, who calls themselves Tapogs, upholds profits over almost everything else. I rescued the ship and its crew which he was from but after my decision to thaw and keep that Tozol we found on this ship and that attack from the creature from inside the derelict parts of this ship they weren’t as keen on staying anymore, but for whatever reason he wants to more than ever. This is fine I’ll need all the minions I can get right now.
Huin: "Anyways, more profits for us two, well I guess three if were counting that thing over there. Good news is that FTL device is fully charged although it took most of our fuel supply to do so..."

That reminds me, there’s a Tozol on this ship.
We had found the Tozol in a cryopod of some sort, after I decided to thaw it despite the protests of the other crew it had seemed like she was dead from some sort of impact to the head. Apparently, while our attention was turned to other matters the Tozol was slowly regenerating and then when that other creature attacked she had regenerated enough to awaken and proceeded to kill and eat the creature along with some of our electronic cargo. Despite their greed, nobody was keen to stop her and to me she could be a useful asset to have, if I can get her to cooperate.

Huin: "...we aren’t exactly swimming in riches and goods but with my skills I'm willing to bet I can sell some of this stuff for profits."
While becoming a merchant wasn’t my idea it is something I can do to help achieve my goals, we do certainly have the space for it even if most of this ship has still yet to be explored and cleared out. For that I need people to do my bidding for me, but for that I need to give some sort of incentive to do so, and I suppose this is where becoming a merchant ship fits in. I might even stumble across what species I am from, wherever that is.
Huin: "So, we ready to go now?"
I could take this time to reflect upon anything that is unclear to me. I suspect I may have little time to do so later. Huin certainly seems eager to get moving. The Tozol meanwhile seems indifferent and is still eating.

So... we're an indifferent tentacle monster with a Ferengi birdman sidekick? All right, that works.

Set course for whatever, and watch tozol-tits eat her way through that bloody mess. We can try and reason with her when she's full.

Try to direct the Tozol into the derelict sectors. If it eats all the spacemonsters there, so much the better. It probably has severe braindamage, but that's probably for the best considering how violent they are naturally. In the mean time the derelict sectors need to be sealed off. See if you can trigger bulkhead doors and depressurize those sectors remotely.

Set course to wherever has FTL fuel cheap, there's buyers for your junk, and the local authorities won't flip their shit when a six kilometer long unidentified alien derelict drops in unannounced. Conversely, avoid any place where the locals are so aggressively opportunistic they would start slicing the ship up for scrap or to get loot out the second they find out it can't fight back or jump away.

What are your and Huin's physical and mental abilities and skills? What do you remember of how you became de facto captain of this space wreck and your life before this point? And just how big are you, anyway? 'Cause you appear to be filling the entire floor of that room. You're not rooted down, are you?

Between the two of you, how much knowledge do you collectively have about tozols? And just how much head trauma did that tozol have? Half gone? Hole through and through? Smashed in, or what? That might give an idea of how much brain she had to regenerate and maybe how much she'll remember from before.

Don't vent the air from areas that have not been cleared yet. While it might kill nasties, it won't effect anything that can survive in a vacuum, and there's potentially valuable items in those sections that are pressure sensitive that would be destroyed, or valuable creatures that would die. But overall, atmospheric gases are vital and irreplaceable out here and should not be wasted.

Instead, access atmospheric controls, adjust the percentage of oxygen in the mix for those compartments down a few percent and do a full air exchange. That'll leave any critter that needs oxygen to breathe either passed out or lethargic, and anybody going in would only need to wear a breathing mask with supplemental oxygen instead of a full space suit.

Do you have any control over the artificial gravity system on the ship, and how much granularity is there to that control? Can it only be adjusted ship-wide, or can it be changed for smaller areas? Because turning the gravity up, down, off, or reorienting it in a section would be a great way to screw with any hostiles in there.

>Try to direct the Tozol into the derelict sectors. If it eats all the spacemonsters there, so much the better.
>See if you can trigger bulkhead doors and depressurize those sectors remotely.

Directing a Tozol is hard work.

Directing a monster is much easier!

Close off the bulkheads between you and the Tozol, then open up the bulkheads between the tozol and the derelict sectors!
Use the ship's PA system to selectively play loud audio clips to summon monsters towards the Tozol.

Tozols are born to fight, to survive, and to win! and to obey The Precursors at all costs

Yeah, of course it's going to WIN And OBEY ITS' DARK AND TERRIBLE OVERLORDS, but the difference between directing IT and directing MONSTERS AT IT is likely the difference between a Recently Regenerated Tozol Who Will be Indifferent to Us and a Recently Regenerated Tozol Who Will be VIOLENT to Us.

I think it has severe brain damage. It's unlikely to know anything. Any head injury severe enough to knock a Tozol unconscious would probably have liquefied its' brain.
>>
No. 534271 ID: 96c896

Can't you just talk to the Tozol over the PA system, or something? Direct her to a room where she can talk back, just make sure that she can't just come after you. Also see if you can keep any other dangers off her back while you have the conversation.

First off, ask her if she has any standing orders, because one thing's for sure, you don't want to get between a Tozol and their orders. Second, introduce yourself and ask who she is. Tell her we can come to a mutually beneficial agreement, because you're just interested in making some money, a Tozol would make an amazing bodyguard as she's demonstrated, and she could probably use some clothes and other supplies. Maybe even a ride to somewhere Tozol-friendly, if she doesn't want to work for you on a permanent basis.
>>
No. 534283 ID: c16a16

Man, that's a big fuckin' ship. It'd take about an hour and twenty minutes to walk from one end to the other, assuming a steady and constant speed of 4.5km/h, and not needing to navigate around internal damage/chaos-spawn/warp-horrors/space-zombies/etc. etc.

Thaw'd Toz'l is likely just gorging to recover lost resources/energy and will hopefully wind down/come to her senses after a little more downtime/recovery time. Keep a close eye for any changes in behaviour and handle the situation with extreme care.

I'd say >>534271 is on the right track here.

We can try right now, since the camera she's on should have an audio pickup, same as the one Huin was on earlier. But lets not reveal we can see and hear her right away, since she might start going around breaking our cameras if she hears that. Adjust the message to one that directs her to use an intercom panel if wants to speak to us, and broadcast it to the whole ship.

However, if she doesn't reply we can't be totally certain if she's just ignoring us. If she's actually taken as much brain damage as we suspect she may not remember any language other than what was "baked in" by the Precursors. Which would be problematic, to say the least.

>How much of the ship has been explored?
The problem isn’t about really how much the ship has been explored but rather how much of this ship has been made secure. When I rescued the merchants they started picking through various compartments looking for anything valuable and also repaired some local systems, including t some of the door controls, if only to get inside the rooms. Eventually one of them left a door open and well, you know the rest. Right now I would estimate around one percent of the ship has been made usable and secure right now.

>Vent atmosphere to kill creatures
This would be a great idea except that the controls to the airlocks that I would need to do so are severed to this control room. Also there is the problem of refilling those areas with breathable atmosphere because the atmosphere controls are one of the many things that is broken on this ship. Also I would have no control over of which rooms would be vented because I cannot control all the doors on this ship remotely as almost all of them are broken.

>Artificial gravity Control
I do have some access to this system but not any fine control over it. The gravity is either on or off there’s no overload or reverse on it unless I can access and modify the generator directly.

>Get Tozol to clear out ship for you.
While this would be ideal I would not know any way to go about it that would not end up making the Tozol angry. Luring monsters to her seems like a good way to get Huin and possibly also me killed. For now observing her seems like the best course of action at the moment, who knows she might even keep the other creatures on this ship away.

Is there anything I want to remember or try before we activate the FTL drive?

Well, what we really need is a full regiment of Space Marines, along with a support cruiser, a shipyard, and a fleet of salvage corvettes. I suppose we'll have to make do with whatever repairs we can afford from what we've salvaged from this derelict. Activate the drive, we need to get somewhere where repairing this floating pile of spacejunk and acquiring a crew unambitious and suicidal enough to fly this thing.

Probly want to set a course for somewhere civilized where people don't ask too many questions. We will want to get around to killing off all the monsters before we let anyone else onboard the ship, that will be significantly easier if you get that tozol to cooperate.

Does the ship have a cargo manifest anywhere? You might find some superconductors for the tozol onboard the ship, you're willing to sacrifice some ship parts for a fully functioning tozol right?

How much control do you have over the ship? What are the ships ability? Can it enter gravity wells and land on planets? Do you have any working weapons? Can you maneuver?

Huin seems to know where to go. What is his plan really? Sell some spare parts in order to hire mercenaries and laborers to retake the ship?

Try leaving the Tozol a gift somewhere if possible. Like some clothing or a book with pictures. Maybe a dataslate with some basic info and a number of languages. See what the reaction is and if she switches it to any specific language you can recognize.

No, really. Give them free-run to tinker with the ship and they'll practically work for room & board, and at the end you'll have a working ship along with a bunch of people who know it inside and out, and who have a personal interest in keeping it running. Instant loyal crew!

Pretty sure they'd run as soon as they saw we have a bit of a monster infestation, and a Tozol. From what I've gathered not many people like Tozols.

Whoever we hire we'd have to keep in mind that not only do we need them to help fix the ship but also be able to handle (at least mentally) all the horrors running around on this ship otherwise they would probably just jump ship next time we had to dock.

>Ship capabilities
The maneuvering engines are working so moving short stellar distances isn't a problem. There is a FTL drive of some sort and from what I have been told seems to be from a much more advanced vessel. Shields are next to nonexistent, providing only basic radiation protection. The weapons system, or rather the weapon system, as the computer lists only one, works fine until you try to fire it, which causes nothing but disappointment to happen. Other systems vary but are generally unreliable at the moment.

>Safety of FTL system
Out of all the systems this system seems to be the most intact for some reason. We had to rig up a way to provide power for it but otherwise it is fine. Whether the ship will be able to survive whatever sort of FTL jump this thing does is another matter entirely but if this ship has survived this long I'm sure it will survive this.

>Where we go?
I am trusting Huin to figure this out for us. There is a stellar chart which lists a few points of interest we could go to with notes about these places on the computer. I really should ask him though.

"You found a good place for us to travel to Huin?"

Huin: "Oh yes, according to this information there’s a developing civilization about fifty thousand light years from where we are which is an unheard of opportunity for us to make great profits.

"We really should trade with beings capable of space travel."

Huin: "Don’t worry, according to this they just recently became capable of interstellar space travel. Just think of all the things we can sell to them we could be rich from just this one trip!"

"Don’t get ahead of yourself, we aren't going to start selling off chunks of this ship just to make more profits."

Huin: "We have plenty of stuff from what my other captain left behind anyways. I am skilled enough to not have to resort to such tactics."

...traditionally, decisions about when to jump to FTL are made at the captain's discretion.

>90 degree turn
Deploy some tentacles before the flightless bird comes crashing down. Don't worry about the tozol, a little thing like gravity going crazy won't inconvenience it much.

Start checking your monitors. What's going on? Are we still in transit, or are we out of FTL? Why has the orientation of the ships presumably artificial gravity changed? What are our surroundings?

Catch Huin in a matrix of tentacles. Check your surroundings outside the ship. Guess the FTL kicked in yo.

A developing civilization eh... I guess you should demand that you will trade only with one set spokesman. Otherwise you might get swarmed by nations or fractions trying to fight over you, which might turn out badly.

The outside of your ship doesn't seem damaged does it? It's better if you can present a strong image. It would be inconceivable to let your trading partners know that you're low on fuel, malfunctioning, understaffed and have monsters on board.

As I help Huin back onto his feet the screen near him lights up showing an incoming transmission. He notices and becomes visibly excited, fumbling to put on his headset.

Transmission: “Pisticrovo jutd la cakne fom Tharnas tore hou'strst idenfuds youdeifl ang youq intenmvuen at oncw I Repeat, unknown vessel this is the Tharnas Defense Force identify yourself and your intentions at once, this is your final warning.”

Huin: “Oh, um, hello! This is the um… Second officer Huin speaking we are merchants from a distant star here to uh, trade with you- I mean with your people or uh, something.”

The radio goes quiet for an uncomfortably long time

Tharnas Defense Force: “…second officer Huin please maneuver your… ship to these coordinates. A military diplomat will be dispatched to your ship shortly.”

Huin takes off the headset and looks at me with an uneasy smile.

Huin: “Well not exactly what I had expected but this is the first step to securing our fortune.”

“Well at least we are getting right down to business, with a military no less.”

Start moving the ship to the coordinates provided, but watch whatever external sensors are available to keep tabs on what the Tharnians are doing. ...And what were they implying by that hesitation before "ship?" It doesn't look that bad, does it?

Ask Huin if an FTL drive that can jump 50,000 light years like it was nothing is unusual or even unique. Because if it is, you'll want to keep the fact that you have such a thing secret, lest you draw the attention of those who would try to seize the ship for it.

Bring up that you two may want to come up with a name for the ship before the meeting, or at least an excuse as to why it doesn't have one. It could lend a little more credence if you have one.

Make sure that Huin keeps his headset on when he meets the diplomat so you can discreetly stay in communication, locking the microphone on so you can listen in the entire time. He should also bring some hand-held communicators for the diplomatic party to use while on the ship, since they're going to need them for at least the auto-translator. Preferably get ones with screens, so you could pipe visual data and possibly video of yourself or from other sources to them.

It's assumed Huin has a manifest of what we have immediately on hand to trade, but double-check that he has it ready. And check it for any fragile items that may have been damaged in that gravity twist. Checking that those are still intact would be a good idea before the diplomat arrives.

Bring up what information you have on Tharnas and it's inhabitants. What's the level of their tech and weapons compared to neighboring star-faring civilizations? Anything notable about their species or society that might be exploited in negotiations?

Check the ship sensor and system status logs from when it performed the FTL jump. Specifically check the log for the artificial gravity system and see if indicates why it flipped out, as well as the log for the FTL drive to make sure it isn't throwing warnings that it's about to break down. And you may as well check for any system notices and warnings over what the ship is usually complaining about.

Flip through the surveillance cameras in the more vital system areas of the ship and check for any damage from the gravity fuck-up, and count the total active cameras to see if you lost any.

And if you can connect to an intercom within earshot of the tozol, tell it that that gravitational screwup was not intentional and as far as you can tell it was the artificial gravity system not reacting well to the FTL jump.

Ship getting blown up probably won't be that much of an issue. It's bloody huge. It may be incapable of defending itself and probably has all the maneuverability of a cruise-liner mired in treacle, but unless it's made of tissue paper and twine the sheer amount of firepower you'd need to wreck something like that would be absurd.

Nevermind the size of the resulting debris field... the effects of which could range anywhere from 'minor navigation problem' to 'widescale loss of life and infrastructure' depending on where the ship is in the system and how big the chunks are.

How much energy does a shorter FTL flight take? Could you do a 1LY, 5LY or 5000LY jump at a fraction of the fuel cost of this jump? How many LY could we still cover? Are there any range limits?

I'm just wondering because you might want to warm up the engine in case this goes badly... If they're sending out their military to meet you then that means they don't trust you.

Is there any way you could put up the appearance of being a busy and well manned craft? Like maybe wear a full space suit when you meet them alone? It might make them a bit more awestruck if they don't know what you look like.
>>
No. 537774 ID: 9ddf68

well lets check to see if anything broke during the jump (anything more that is) and do a quick check on what we have to sell, how much fuel do we have left, and see if there is anything else that needs our attention before we get to the military outpost.

Also how durable is this ship? cause since our ship's defenses are absolute crap and we walk into a fight we could turn this thing into a giant battering ram and make a brake for it. On the plus side, if they try to board us they'll like fight some of the monsters on board the ship which will either tear them apart or they'll kill some of the monsters for us so it's kinda a win win either way if that happens.

Big problem with preemptively charging the FTL drive to jump in case the situation turns sour: Most of the fuel supply was used up charging the drive for the jump here. That still might not preclude charging it for a much shorter jump, but unless there's someplace with a known supply of fuel within range, we're kinda hosed if things go sideways here. I'd rather surrender in that case rather than jump away and end up stranded.

>>537764
I would also like to know what the fuel and efficiency numbers are for the FTL drive. Maybe it's more efficient with shorter jumps, and we can conserve fuel by making a string of those rather than one big jump, at the cost of it taking longer to get to our destination.

"What's behind this door?"

"That leads deeper into the ship... haven't visited yet because of monsters"

"Our tozol feasting on some monster-remains... we haven't spoken to her yet, but she seems timid while having something to eat and is not bothered"

"OK, then all's fine."

The ship maneuvering engines and FTL drive are separate systems which work independently from each other.

I ask Huin about the speed of the FTL drive.

Huin: "It is definitely unusual, Tapog FTL drives would take over a decade to cover this distance. We had a feeling that this ship's FTL drive was much more advanced and powerful, but I never would've guessed that it would cover the distance almost instantly."

"Do you have any guesses on its range?"

Huin: "From what I know there seems to be a fixed cost in energy it requires to activate, which I'm guessing causes some sort of reaction in the drive that moves the ship, I don't really know, I'm not an engineer."

There also seems to be a Tozol glaring at me now.

It could be that she is trying to communicate although I’m not sure why the translator wasn't able to figure out what she was saying earlier when she was unfrozen.

>Tentacle Monster

Well I guess I am some sort of monster which happens to have tentacles for limbs, although I don’t know for sure what I really am. Now that I think about it I don’t even know if I even have a gender like Huin or the Tozol. Being able to change my body’s shape doesn't help me in this regard either.

>Weird feeling

I feel like I want to do something but I’m not sure what. It seems similar to the primal instincts that I had when I wasn't self aware but instead of hunger it is something else, something unfamiliar and it is gnawing at my mind.

Hopefully this feeling will go away if I focus on something else like managing the ship. I tell Huin about the Tozol but I don’t think he cares at the moment. From what I can see from the few working sensors are about a dozen ships approximately 150 meters long with the largest being 350 meters long following us a fairly sizable distance away. The sensors don’t tell me much more past that.

Three hours later.

“Huin there’s a small craft approaching. This is probably the diplomat team they said was coming.”

Huin: “Finally, I almost thought they would not even come. I got everything as neat as I can make it as long as nothing bad happens this should go perfectly. You alright, you sound out of breath.”

“I’m fine, just do whatever it is that you do.”

It can’t be psionic related because as far as I know Tozols don’t have any abilities like that and mine does not give any feedback to my mind. Maybe if I examine her or something, I don’t know, what I’m doing now isn't helping.

Well, there are only so many primal instincts.

Are you thirsty? Do you need to excrete waste? Do you need rest or sleep? Have you done any of these things since becoming self aware?

Perhaps physical contact is triggering your instinct. While you can't move yourself out of the room due to your bulk, could you shift your body around to leave an open spot where she's standing and keep from touching her?

In case that doesn't help then type this out on your pad in the largest font you can fit on the screen and show it to her: "Your presence raising strong unknown instinctual urges in me; Getting harder and harder to think. Wait in the vent for a bit until several tentacles come slithering in after you and then burst through the bottom into the room. At that point most of the long ones will be stretched out into the vents and you should be able to make it to the door.

Honestly if you are going to be staying there you had better have a talk with this guy and figure out what his issue is. If the tentacles are just being grabby and you are strong enough to fight them off no problem then I would not worry to much. Maybe this is his species way of saying hello? Or feeling you up with tentacles is how he sees things close up.

Either way having more allies to help you find lost artifacts is a good thing. Even if one of them is a bit grabby.

Okay, I think there's a way you can go that doesn't immediately involve cutting your way through a huge mass of shapeshifting tentacles. It may not pan out but it's worth a try before trying to fight your way out.

Grab that pipe to your right and rip a section out. Use it to punch a small hole through the duct wall to your left and right. Stick your tails through the holes and get a blindsight reading on what's out there. There ought to be an area between the ceiling of the room below and the floor of the deck above you that you might be able to slip out into.

Pick whichever side has enough room and hand-holds to grab onto. At the least there ought to be the mounts the duct is supported by you could climb across, but there's very likely girders and various pipe runs and conduits criss-crossing the space you can clamber across.

Quickest and safest route would likely be to wherever this duct would have gone before the shapeshifter crushed it. If you get there you could just kick a hole in and climb through. Secondary choice is whichever of the door or wall vent in the room below is closer. That'll involve fighting the tentacles so grab a large shard of the duct to use.

Zowl considers ripping her way up but realizes that she does not have the luxury of time or tools to get through in a timely manner. Instead she rips her way out of the vent to escape being cornered.

Control switches to Huin...

Huin has always dreamed to become higher then his caste would allow. He saw an opportunity with this ship to become much more then what his society deemed was fit for him, and to become wealthy in the process. While he is quick witted he is starting to have second thoughts about going on this venture.

While Huin expected that he may see alien beings, his expectations did little to help his anxiety upon seeing the alien being. Much of its body is covered in scales with large sections of hair and sections fur going down along the back of the forearms and along the tail ending in a fluffy point. When it speaks, Huin sees it's sharp pointed teeth but does his best to pretend not to notice.

The Fluffy lizard introduces itself as Jouko, a representative for the leader of one of the major nations on its home world. Huin nervously checks his translator and returns the greeting, his anxiety starting to dissipate. The representative asks Huin if it is alright to bring his group onto the ship mentioning that one is a military quartermaster and the other is a scientist eager to come aboard.

Huin thinks for a moment and....

Deny the boarding request. Make up a story about interstellar quarantine procedures or something if you have to. Or claim it was a ferocious pirate attack.

Point is, you can't guarantee their safety with a tozol on board and you can't afford a potential armed takeover. It's just a handful on the entire spaceship, after all. You're here for trade anyway, not guided tours. You can tell them that.

well, no large boarding group. explain that most of the bulkheads are still closed because of the various monsters on board. and the tozol is killing and eating them, but you have no idea how many are left. simply put, everyone that comes on board can't complain if a monster eats them because they went down a unexplored passage.

Yeah tell them that your crew is still dealing with some issues from a pirate attack and you do not want to risk there safety.

We do need more crew eventually and who knows maybe we can find some here but be careful about first impressions. Don't let them know its just you and two crazy aliens on the ship right now.

If its just him and two other guys we might be able to have them on board. But really want to get the situation with the captain and his "girlfriend" under control first. If you go to introduce them to your captain and its a room full of tentacles "fighting" a naked Tozol it probably wont go over well.

Go Tozol Go.

As for Huin. Grant them permission to board in a small number, but warn them you're still recovering from being attacked, so their safety can't be ensured.

Well first ask what both parties are like. I mean if the scientist are eager we really don't want them tearing the ship apart trying to figure out all its bells and whistles. Also I should probably ask the capton since he is in charge of the ship

Well, if we want to trade stuff, we should probably impress their scientist with stuff we have for trade. That'll put pressure on the fluffy lizard's negotiators.

Explain the ship was a derelict and has not been thoroughly explored and is likely deadly in many areas. We have what is one of the most dangerous creatures in the universe aboard the ship. And we've yet to make any meaningful communication with it. 3 people max, only sidearms.

Suggest that you'd prefer to have only one of those two on board. Perhaps that'll give you a hint at what they value the most?

Let's not say the ship is a derelict we just found and that it's full of monsters. Or that we have basically no crew. This alien seems basically friendly, but that could change very quickly if they think they can just take what they want from the ship.

Mentioning cleanup from a pirate attack works, because it implies we're strong enough to fend off pirates. It's vital we appear competent and in control.

It'd be for the best if you don't say anything about what's happened on this ship, whether true or made up. That'll just give you a chance to bungle things. Just don't give them anything and let them come to their own conclusions.

Tell the representative that he may bring only the quartermaster and scientist on board. Then say any and all weapons his group has must be left behind on their ship. They will also have to declare any non-obvious innate offensive capabilities of their species.

Explain that you will be his sole liaison and communication channel to this ship; No other member of the crew will have direct contact with them. All questions and responses will go through and be screened by you.

Say that they must remain escorted by you at all times and remain within designated areas, pointing out that they will be monitored at all times by the ship's internal surveillance and sensor systems for compliance. Failure to comply will result in a response by the internal security system, followed by expulsion from the ship.
