...my Rot has begun to set in.

it doesn't usually come this early in a person's life. the books at the Smile school said it usually came near the end of an older person's life, once they've passed Serious school or even later.

i haven't even passed Smile school or even had my first H Switch! it's terrible.
>>

Maybe it's not so bad. Can the rot be treated in someway? Have you heard about anyone else getting the rot while in "Smile school."

Elaborate. What's the rot, and what does it do?

What's an H switch?

there's no medical cure for Rot, really. but the teachers said once a person has Rot they have to go on a long journey, through the mountains.

sometimes they don't come back.

Sounds like you need to prepare, then.

Gather everything you'll need to survive the journey, and all the information you need on where you're going and on coping with rot.

an H Switch is a special gift the Watchers give when a person's ready for a big change.
no one's supposed to talk about the details of it, but i've heard once you've had a lot you get to become one of the Watchers.

If we're traveling through the mountains we need some hiking gear. Solid shoes, a knapsack, bedroll, food, water. Warm clothing. An umbrella would be good too.

You should also visit your friends to say goodbye.

my PINGER dings at me.

...turn your phone off, then. It'll only distract you, and you should save the battery for when you might need your apps. Who knows when you'll be able to charge it again.

Actually, one of those hand-crank radios that double as a cell phone charger would be nice to bring.

You seem set for basic supplies. Any way you can gather useful information before you head out? On the rot, or your journey?

Turning your phone off would be a way of letting your friends know that you can't communicate. Or you could have someone else tell them. Ooh, can you set your social networking status to "Rot"? That'd do it.

Pffft 'rules'
Friends don't keep friends in the dark, especially about serious things like this.
And besides you aren't on the journey yet so i bet you could talk to them if you do it fast.

Oh my god you don't even know which mountain? You're so totally screwed. Welp, let's go to Coffer Mountain.

Can you tell us what you know about each of the mountains before you head out for any of them? Is there a specific one you are meant to go to, or is it up to you to pick the right one, like some kind of guessing test? Or maybe you can go to any of them, but one might be better for you than the others?

I'd hate to say this, because it might be completely against everything you know, but... it kind of seems like they just want to get rid of you.

I mean, if the Rot is like a disease, maybe this system exists to try to keep it from spreading. But it seems pretty cruel, to just completely send someone who is only in Smile School out into the mountains with no info at all. Do people who have gone through Serious School know more? Maybe you can wait here until someone like that comes along? Would that take too long? It might be worth a shot.

I doubt the Watchers can see what you're up to out here anyway, you can probably do what you want. Plus you're probably feeling kind of emotional right now, taking a breather might be good.

Check out the plant while you wait!

this plant is really weird. these teal things are teardrop-shaped hard things, like stones. the stem is dark and smooth-looking. what should i do?

>take a few of the teal buds
>pick up whole plant
>leave plant alone.
>>
No. 542696 ID: 0b54f4

Maybe take a few of the buds, if it has enough. Most plants are geared to spread their seeds as far as possible, anyway, so assuming those might be seeds, it could even be in the plant's best interests. If not, at least they're cool.
>>
No. 542698 ID: 7bbaae

>>542693
Take some buds. Can't exactly carry the whole plant anyway. Give one a lick to see if it tastes good.

Anyway uh, I don't like the idea of sleeping on the side of the road and wasting a day in the hopes that you will randomly find help. Better to keep going until there's a reason to stop.
>>
No. 542715 ID: 2f2cd6

Take buds. Take only one, first, and assess if you're doing harm to the plant or not before gathering any more.
