You are Rayne Autumn, a human magician who was stolen away to the land of Gensokyo, where myth and legend take physical form and walk among us. You are employed by Yukari Yakumo, who loans you out to other powerful individuals as a sort of agent, or mercenary. First Mamizou Fuwatsuiwa, the owner of the local bank, and money-lender. Now you work for Eirin Yagokoro, an alchemist originating from the lunar capitol. You are eager to learn, have a pleasant disposition, and understand that discretion and politeness will get you far in a land where everyone and everything is dangerous.

Your abilities include:

Flight (Ring of flight)
Danmaku (Inherent ability of Gensokyans)
Timestop (Luna Dial, slightly worn)
Elemental Magic (Elementalist teaching)
Physically fit (Oni training)
Spellcard Tampering (Special ability, alter and invent new spellcards)

Your current mission is to catch the thief Marisa Kirisame, who has stolen away with several of Eirin's books on alchemy and spellcards. You chased her into the rain, and upon confronting her, were challanged to a duel. She's fast, cunning, and shows little in the way of subtlety when it comes to magic. How should you deal with the witch?

start filling the air with knives. air must be so dense with the fuckers that she has a hard time maneuvering, then go in for the kill with lasers.

Can we use her blunt force aggression against her? We need traps that are triggered / powered by giant mega-laser attacks.

You fill the sky with a storm of sharp daggers. As you thought, the witch seems to have a hard time weaving through the shrapnel. What kind of lasers would you suggest? There are so many varieties, it is hard to make a choice yourself.

>>653822
...You also release several devices from a spellcard of your own design. Should she expend too much energy at once, they'll home in and chase her down.

You prepare a ball of lightning, and hurl it at Marisa. It's rather difficult to control remotely though, and while you bounce thunder between the shrapnel in an attempt to trip her up, she manages to evade it all. It's incredible really, she flies like a brick tied to several balloons and tossed into a typhoon made of anger and impatience and oh wait shit shit shit-

Your hat is your highest priority! This sudden thought cuts through the miasma of your headache, and brings you back to sharp clarity. You swoop down and snag it from the air, fitting it snugly upon your head. The clouds have cleared, the storm is gone! What luck, the worst of the damage seems to be dust. You don't think it was ever clearly explained to you, but everyone here has some form of hat, so you can only assume bad things would happen if you lost yours. Also, you don't know how you could possibly pull off the look of a crafty and cunning magus without it.

Fascinating. It seems that by claiming this hat, you've gained power. No, wait. Better to say that your brush against the witch herself, your duel together itself granted you power. Specifically, you've gained the Illusion Laser spell, which is written into your grimoire. The illusion laser is a medium power laser that is not blocked by obstacles, piercing through objects and organisms, dealing damage to all in it's way.
Fascinating. You wonder what other abilities you could have acquired since you arrived.

-Disguise ability, facial shift, hair color/style (Acquired from Mamizou during employment)

-Affinity Arachnea (Acquired from Wriggle Nightbug after duel)

Your other gifts have already been logged in the grimoire, which is always available for viewing.

You make it back to Eientei without incident, and it would appear that you have a guest.

Ran: Hello there, Rayne. It has been some time, hasn't it?

You: Hello, Miss Ran. I'm assuming that this visit isn't coincidental?

Ran: You assume right. I'm here-

Eirin: The books Rayne, did she have the books?

You hand over the notes and the textbook to the anxious alchemist, and she sighs in relief.

Eirin: Thank you, I can't even begin to explain how valuable these texts and research are. Although it's interesting, I'd guess she's trying to claim immortality and become a complete magician. ...Oh, I'm sorry, I interrupted you, I was a bit worried and...

Ran: Oh don't worry, I'm in no rush. Anyway, I was saying that your time here has come to an end. When you're ready tonight, I will take you to your next employer.

You: We're leaving tonight? Would my next employer appreciate us arriving past midnight?

Ran: I don't think she'd mind. Your penultimate stop on this particular... incident, is the Scarlet Devil Mansion. You will be working under Remilia Scarlet, a vampire of european origin. You won't be staying there long, a few days at most, but we've had to step up our timetable. I'm sure Miss Scarlet will tell you the specifics.

You: ....

Ran: Oh, don't give me that look~ You've spoken to Reimu about them right? Take what she says with a grain of salt, she's not exactly the most sociable person.

You make your goodbyes to the residents of Eientei. Reisen seems anxious that you're leaving, Kaguya doesn't seem to be paying attention, Tewi is absent, and Mokou nods in your direction before taking off herself. Eiren is waiting for you at the entrance.
>>

That... is actually a really good idea. She gave you your current hat, it'd only be good manners to provide a suitable replacement. Maybe you can find out where your current hat came from. But first...

>>659573
You don the Witch's Raiment. As you have already added it's power to your grimoire, it is purely an aesthetic addition. Though frilly, it feels like it was fitted for someone with much more hair than you.

>>659579
Less so than you might think. If you do get into a fight with someone with access to chronomancy, you'll fight on even footing. Upgrading the Luna Dial would have given you a priority of +2, where now it has a priority of +1, as will other timestop devices and powers.

Eirin coughs softly, and you turn your attention to her.

Eirin: Rayne, I wanted to say that it was good to have you here for this short time, and we will see you again soon. You work hard and have a good brain on you, both good qualities, and so I have no hesitations giving this to you.

She hands you a spellcard. This one, however, is made of thin, unyielding metal, unlike the paper-esque feel of your other cards. It has your full name on it, but doesn't list anything else of the nature of the spell.

Eirin: This is what we call a Last Word. The fights ahead of you will be dangerous, very much so, and this is the best measure of safety I can give you. It will only activate when your life is in danger, so keep it close.

You shake her hand, flash a smile at Reisen, and make your way out of Eientei with Ran.

We still have to fill it out ourself, right? What's the difference in what we're allowed to put in when inventing our own last word?

Huh, that's funny. It seems as though you are unable to edit this card, possibly because of the material it's made of. You can feel a vague connection to it, but nothing else. When you ask Eirin about it, she merely smiles and wishes you good luck.

You step outside with Ran, and the two of you fly off into the night.
