676035 No. 676035 ID: 2940d8

My parents are crying, and the TV in the living room is running a news story about my best friend Marsha.

“I don’t understand how something like this could happen,” says Mom, “Not here.”

“I’m so sorry. It’s such a terrible tragedy,” says Dad. “If you need to talk about it, we’re always here. We don’t want you to miss the first day of school, though. Try to be strong.”

“I know Marsha will be missed,” says Mom. “She was your only friend.”

I wish she would stop saying that. She wasn’t my only friend. Neither of them says anything for half a minute, and the silence quickly grows stale.

“We think you spend too much time on your computer, Joanna. Maybe this is a sign that you need to go out and make some new friends,” says Dad.

My friends are all over the world. Too far away to know about what happened in this town. My parents can never understand that, because they’re old. They didn’t have friends across the ocean like I do. Marsha was my best friend, but not my only one. Try explaining that to them, though; it’s a waste of time.

I can’t decide if I want to be alone, be with others, or be alone with other people on the internet. I can go out and see who’s around, or I can stay inside and check my Blipp messages.

> “No thanks. I think I’ll stay in.”
> “Ok. Maybe I’ll get some fresh air.”

Can't they see you're in no condition to go out making friends? Go to your room and cry.

I guess my heart wanted to stay inside. I go to my room and shut the curtains to optimize the light from my laptop monitor

I feel most comfortable surrounded by my figurines. It's the only time I really feel comfortable. I don't usually feel comfortable

Time to check my Blipp.

[blipp messages]:

Mark - guy from school. Likes to talk tabletops and trading cards. Sometimes ERPs. Three messages

Danny - Guy who lives in this state that I kind of like. I've never met him but he has showed me a picture and he is cute. He doesn't message me very often. One message!!!

Marsha - ... One message.

Elisa - New girl at school I added on Blipp. She's pretty cool, but doesn't like most of the stuff I like. I wanted to try to make her feel welcome because I never feel welcome and I was born here

...Damnit.

Okay, be careful. That's probably a virus program, possibly designed to ensure that any friends of Marsha will be tracked down and "dealt with".

1. Find a junk computer, something you won't regret formatting / destroying.
2. Transfer file to junk computer.
3. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET.
4. Get this party started.

Marsha was always the sociable one. Tons of friends, boyfriends, hobbies. Super hot, super cool, super talented. I wanted to hate her but I just couldn’t. I loved her.

I… I don’t have a junk computer at hand, but I make sure my backups are up-to-date in case shit goes down. I scan the file with three different antivirus programs

The Flimbo result is some post on a foreign forum from 1998. No replies. User no longer has an account. The forum is no longer active. The rest of the posts on the forum seem to be about outdoor equipment. Hunting optics, sunglasses, binoculars, cycling parts, fly fishing. The text of this post is in its own thread. It reads:

I close and re-open the program. It goes back to the same “Hi JOANNA” page. Whatever.

Thinking back to what she said about the project… not much, really. Just that it was the coolest thing she’s ever made. She liked to mess with me this way, though. One time she spent a whole day making me think that I had a surprise birthday party coming up, and then when I got home there was no party. Then when I went to the bathroom, everyone was waiting in the bathroom with party poppers and confetti

I wouldn’t put it past her to go this elaborate with a prank set up. I can’t even get her back for it either because… well… yeah.

wow these people are pretty insensitive

I guess it depends on how much you want to open up right now but you might want to start off by telling Danny that you aren't feeling that great. Something awful happened.

Since you are closest to Mark tell him about the program Marsha sent you, and try to talk about how you feel. It feels strange to look at something she made and know that she's gone now. Also it doesn't really do anything, which is kinda weird.

To Eliza- "I know. I don't want to think about my best friend having that done to her."

Are the police still investigating the murder scene? Shouldn't someone take her down from there? Speaking of which you might want to tell the police about the message she sent you before you died. If you know the guy she was talking about he is now a suspect. The message was sent on 9/6... was that yesterday? Today?

It says she's online and I'm desperate. I know it's probably her Mom or Dad or the police screening her shit, but fffffffffffffuck I got to send something.

Share your feelings with Danny and Eliza. You need that emotional outlet.

Yeah, just share feeling with Danny and Eliza, however you know how to express it. Maybe inquiry Danny how he knew that you needed someone to talk to.

Ask Mark how other students at your school are reacting. If there's a wake starting up or if he knows how Marsha's parents are reacting.

Talk to Eliza. Tell Danny you're pretty messed up but you'll be okay.

I need a moment to think of what I will say to Danny. I have to plan each word. I know I sound kind of weird if I don’t stop and think. I don’t want him to think that I’m that weird girl, because I’m completely not weird

I open up the Eliza tab for now.

ELIZA

(14:19) Eliza: Did you hear about that girl from our school that was murdered?
(14:19) Eliza: Did you know her?
(20:15) Joanna: Yeah, she was my friend. Her name was Marsha
(20:16) Eliza: Oh my god, really? They found her at a warehouse hanging from hooks
(20:24) Joanna: I know. I don’t know what to do
(20:25) Eliza: I didn’t really know her, but she sounded amazing
(20:26) Eliza: You’re the only one who talked to me in the book line… soo…
(20:27) Eliza: yeah, I don’t know what to say
(20:28) Eliza: it’s horrible
(20:28) Eliza: You listened to me blabbing about my stupid lock thing, so I owe you if you need to talk
(20:34) Joanna: Thanks. I could really use someone to talk to about this, because it seems like no one really wants to listen
(20:36) Eliza: I might know how it feels
(20:36) Eliza: I have literally no friends here so I can’t talk about anything to anyone
(20:38) Eliza: you ok?

My room door slowly begins to squeak open.

So?
Close it.
And get back to splurging on the feelings. Something something she was a role model, but she's gone. Nice, which is why she had to die because that's what the world does yadda yadda yadda.

Grab a melee weapon and open the door. If there's a monster, let your instincts guide you

to kick them in the crotch. lol

Drop some BRBs to keep people from worrying, grab onto your nearest heavy thing, then ask "Is that you, Dad?!" loud enough so that your parents could potentially hear it.

Well, back to bed. I would be lying if I said I was not a bit spooked.

...my laptop is dead. But... I just charged it. Two minutes is too long to go without the internet!

Did the battery come lose, maybe? If it's unplugged and you managed to accidentally knock the battery out of contact, that would kill it.
>>

Plug it into the wall.
Kaleowhatsit probably is an inefficient program that uses a lot of horse power somehow and used all your battery.

Or you have a simple battery failure. Or something melted in there.

You're a nerd using a laptop instead of a desktop? Ugh, so inefficient for internet lovers.

Ugh, don’t remind me. I wanted to build a gaming rig to serve as my ultimate headquarters like Marsha did. Her dad is really rich, but my parents said it was a waste of money, even if I paid for it. I ended up with this thing, which is not only a laptop, but a really cheap one. Whatever, though. My parents bought it for me to use for school, and I need to be grateful.

I plug it into the wall and gave it a few minutes. Still nothing. I turn it over to remove the battery. It is a standard clump of lithium ion cylinders encased in plastic, cheaply assembled somewhere on the other side of the world. No visible damage, but it’s hard to tell with these. I guess I’m out of luck.

“Marsha?” I say aloud. “Are you haunting me right now? If you are, just tell me, I’m not even scared. We can hang out or something.”

The room remains quiet.

It's 2009, if her parents won't buy her a gaming rig, they wouldn't get her a fancy, smancy smartphone. If it was 2013, they might just accept the times and get her a smartphone, but smartphones just started going mainstream at this time. They were around, and plentiful, but this is the time where they really started taking off, but JUST started to take off. Odds are that she's got a cheap ass flip phone mainly used for emergencies, with no text plan, if at all.

Your dad probably has a smell old desktop from the 90's in the study or dining room or somewhere right? Probably something your Mom uses to clip and print online coupons and get a lot of viruses from doing it?

You could use that.

If you're being haunted, these spirit has to do it in vaguely suspicious ways to make you think you're going insane. To take out your Dad's desktop he used to play the shareware version of Duke Nukem 3D on, it'd have to go be a LOT less vague to you.
