I help Lucas up out of the grave. He doesn't let go of my hand - I can feel his fingernails digging in, even through my gloves. He's still smiling. He's been smiling this entire time.

"You know, I'm kind of glad I didn't manage to kill you," he says. "Too bad that girl had to die, though. She wasn't even a part of the game. But you know what they say, about breaking a few eggs."

I feel like I'm going to be sick.

The game is...pretty simple.

There are five of us in the Occult Club at school. Long story short, we summoned some demons. Powerful demons. And each one of them, as far as I've been able to tell, gave the club member who summoned them the same ultimatum: kill the other members of the Occult Club, be the last one left standing, and achieve immortality as well as nobility status in Hell.

So, a tempting offer. Especially when none of us are particularly close with one another. And the demons hang around and even help out sometimes, if they feel like it. I think it's mostly a spectator sport for them, though. None of them seem to really have a stake in who wins.

Option #2: Get killed.

The third option is to go into hiding for the rest of your life, which sounds pretty shit. If you think about it from a utilitarian perspective, then one immortal lifetime is better than five normal lifetimes, so one of you should take it, why not let that person be you?

There are five members of the Occult Club: Reynard, Lucas, Noah (me), Oakley, and Mona. Out of all of us, Lucas was the first one of us to draw blood - the only one to draw any blood, so far. He took out Oakley's eye with a pocketknife on their way to the music building about a week ago. Told her he knew a shortcut through the woods so he could get her alone.

He also killed the girl we just buried. I know her - she's in my astronomy class. We were walking back to the dorms together. Lucas thought she was Mona, in the dark, and slit her throat. Kind of a funny accident, really. I'm just glad it wasn't me.

"Lucas," I say, very tentatively. There's still bile in my throat, and I can't be sure that I'm not going to throw up on him if he gets too close. "This is probably a stupid question, but - we're by ourselves in the woods at night. Why haven't you killed me yet?"

I stick a hand in the pocket of my sweatshirt, feeling for the comforting weight of my butterfly knife. Lucas laughs like I've just told the funniest joke in the world.

"Don't be an idiot! We're on the same team, now! We have a secret to share, so I won't kill you as long as you don't tell anyone. And besides...I like you, Noah."

While we fill in the hole, I think about the demons.

I don't know anything about anyone else's demon, really, aside from their faces and names. Not even their real faces - they all wear masks, most of the time. Reynard's demon is Mammon, Lucas's is Aamon, mine is Belphegor (though they prefer Bel), Oakley's is Beelzebub, and Mona's is Asmodeus. I think I got lucky with Bel. They're nice, if not a little cynical, and they give pretty good advice that I don't think is meant to be misleading. They just have a bad habit of only turning up when they feel like it, so I can't rely on them when I've got really pressing issues. Like the current body-burying situation.

>>
No. 709547 ID: f02a77

So like, why?

It's not like these demons are holding a gun to your respective heads here, considering that so far they don't seem to really care about you guys in particular. Immortality, yeah, but that seems like a huge "all or nothing" deal when you all could just decide to live your lives normally (might even bore the demons enough to leave you alone). Though I guess Lucas is either really tempted by the offer or has always wanted to kill people and now has an excuse.

I say we kill Lucas now - he has no weapon other than a shovel, which you also have, and you might be able to get the drop on him. Then we just convince everyone else to not murder, and we all live happily ever after.
>>
No. 709570 ID: 008615

What in the world made you think joining a club where you summon demons was a good idea to begin with? I have a feeling that had you known you would be playing a murder/demon game, you wouldn't have joined.

Be ready to kill Lucas at the first sign of him turning on you, if we are going to play a demonic game, we play to win, we play so we can come out kicking.

Fair enough, but he also has something of a conscious if he is kind of freaking out and is scared, honestly I think Noah is still in a little bit of shock.

If we want to kill Lucas I say this is how we do it. As soon as Lucas drops the shovel be ready to grab it. Hit him over the head with it, repeatedly if necessary. Stab him once the heart with his own knife then wipe your finger prints clean. Bury him and his knife with the poor girl he killed and dispose of the shovel, do not leave it where someone could find it.

okay sorry to double post but quick note that i think should go here rather than the disthread:

the names noah listed off are each one of the seven princes of hell. the seven princes. so even though these five are here specifically because they were summoned, i don't think we should let our guards down on the possibility of there being two more players that we don't know about.

it's not an IMMEDIATE problem, and might never end up being a problem period, but it's one that i definitely think we should keep an eye on.

noah, did you guys bother doing any like ... prelimary goetic googling in the midst of all this?
>>
No. 709601 ID: 008615

>>709590

Good point... From what I have found princes of hell are as follows:

- Luscifer: Represents pride (player unknown)
- Mammon: Represents greed, Reynard
- Asmodeus: Represents lust, Mona
- Leviathan: Represents envy, (player unknown)
- Beelzebub: Represents gluttony, Oakley
- Amon (or Satan): Represents wrath, Lucas
- Belphagor: Represents sloth, Noah

My guess is that each demon has chosen their player based on personality, which makes sense given Lucas's willingness to kill makes him an ideal candidate for a demon of wrath.

There may be two players that are part of the club that represents Luscifer and Leviathan, Noah might haven't met them yet. These players may have also been unable to attend the club meetings. We may want to look into this further after we have dealt with the problem at hand.

"Thanks for the help," Lucas says.

His back is to me, as he piles dirt down over top of the corpse. I step back, holding my shovel tightly, and I think, I could kill him right now. I could smash him over the head with my shovel, or take out my knife and slit his throat. I mean, there's already a grave here. Hiding the body wouldn't be much of an issue.

But he's had the chance to kill me this whole time, and he hasn't taken it. He wants to be my friend. And sure, I've already got a lot of friends back home, who I like more than anyone out here. But if Lucas is really serious about being my ally in this game, it would be pretty stupid to say no. It would be even more stupid if I tried to kill him and he got away. If I'm going to kill him now, it has to be with one blow, and I can't hesitate. If I take any longer than I need to, or I only manage to injure him, he'll know what's up.

My hands are shaking on the shovel's handle. As much as I hate to admit it, I'm a little scared of Lucas. I don't understand why he didn't kill Oakley when he had the chance, why he only took her eye out when he caught her off guard. It's like he didn't want to kill her yet. He's playing some kind of long game, and I don't like it.

Long games are bad! More people are going to get hurt, fatally or not, unless you ice this guy, Good Conscience be damned!

Just take out your knife and jab it into this throat. The first blow doesn't have to kill if you can get him while he's distracted/disorientated. Have you ever seen somebody shrug off a knife sticking out of their neck before?

He... didn't kill Oakley? It's like he wants to turn the other participants into the murderers. It's like he wants to be the first real victim in the game. That implies he KNEW it was Mona with you.

So don't kill him, I guess. Not until he actually kills someone else in the game. Then bide your time, keep a knife or gun on you or something. Or poison him.

Be ready to defend your self if he tries anything, but here is my thoughts. You shouldn't be friends with him, you both know that you will have to try and kill one another soon, don't be friends. But you should be allies with each other, make a deal kind of like in Highlander, you don't have to fight each other but make sure you aren't killed by anyone else, let the final battle be between you. If you want to take the high(er) road only kill people who attempt to kill you, and do it quickly.

>kill the other members of the Occult Club, be the last one left standing, and achieve immortality as well as nobility status in Hell.
So, if you have to kill all members of the OC, does this mean that as soon as even one of them dies to causes other than YOU, you have already lost? Meaning that, following the rules, the demons don’t have to give the “winner” anything?

Though this summary is vague enough that achieving immortality and becoming nobility may be further goals the demons have for the humans instead of rewards.

Lucas fills in the last of the hole, and starts flattening the dirt down with his shovel, whacking it against the ground. He looks over at me.

"You can start heading back, if you want. I'll only be here a while longer, and Aamon will help if I need it."

Sounds like Aamon is a lot more reliable than Bel, as far as showing up when you need them. I stick my shovel upright in the ground and lean on it. If I stay here and help Lucas, maybe I can learn more about Aamon, and what his relationship with them is like. But if I go home, I can shower and get in bed and be done for the evening.

>PERSPECTIVE CHANGE: Lucas

"Thanks again!" I call after Noah as he heads to bed. He really did more standing around than helping, but I guess maybe he's in shock. Or he was trying to decide whether or not to kill me, while we were alone in the woods together. I'm pretty glad that he didn't try anything, because then I would have had to decapitate him with the shovel, and I didn't want that. I've liked Noah since the first time we met, before we summoned the demons. I think I'd feel bad if I killed him - or at least, if I killed him before things got down to just the two of us. So it's good that we're on the same team, for now. I'll help him out for as long as he wants to be my friend.

I pick my scarf up off the ground, where I put it before I started digging the grave. It's the only piece of clothing that got any blood on it, besides my sweater. I'll have to wash both. Luckily, I slit the girl's throat from behind, so most of her blood just sprayed all over the grass. Noah got a little caught in the splash zone, but nothing a shower won't fix. And he didn't seem to mind too much, anyway. Or he didn't even notice. I wasn't sure which.

"You know you don't get extra points for killing people not involved in the game, right?" Aamon steps out from behind a tree, grinning. I wonder how long they've been around. Maybe they were here even before I stabbed the girl. I don't know how anyone else's demons work with them, but Aamon follows me around a lot. They're pretty chatty.

"I know," I say. "I just wanted to get Noah alone. I thought maybe she was Mona, but she wasn't, so - oh well. Noah still said he'd be on my team."

"Right," Aamon says, rolling the word over their tongue. "But you're still going to kill him when you have to, right? There's no real allies in this game, Lucas. That's not how it works."

I'm sure you both know that there can be only one victor in this game. But people who fight for survival will always find others in the same boat to work with them, at least for now.

I mean, it's basically the hunger games, but with less bullshit and instead of the capitol, it's literally the underworld. Either there only remains 1 victor, or no victor at all.

I snort. "Duh. Everyone knows that. Don't worry, I'm not gonna go soft on you any time soon."

"Good," Aamon says. They sound huffy. They're kind of a sore loser, I guess, so they really want me to pull through in this whole competition. I clap them on the shoulder, hoping maybe they'll lighten up a little if I change the subject.

"What have you been up to, anyway?"

"Spectating. The other humans are all out and about, for the most part. It's been an interesting evening." Aamon looks down at my hand, but doesn't remove it. They don't seem to mind close contact, for the most part. I think some of the other demons do, because I never see anyone in the club getting too close to theirs, except maybe Oakley.

"Yeah?" I ask. "Did you run into any other demons?"

"Just my sibling."

Their voice darkens. Maybe I shouldn't have asked. Aamon and Reynard's demon Mammon are twins, and I get the feeling that they don't like each other much. Maybe it's sibling rivalry, or just plain old competitiveness. I've never asked.

You figure that nothing's PROBABLY going to happen tonight in regards to the competition, for now. Maybe an attack when you're asleep, maybe. So does he want to do anything? Become corporal and get a burger at a greasy spoon? Hit up some chicks? See a movie? The night is young.

"Has anyone died yet?" I ask, deciding it might be best to change the subject. If Aamon has been spectating, they must know what the other club members are up to. I don't think there's any rules against them telling me - we are technically partners, after all. Well, partners in the way that a horse and a person betting on the horse are partners. If the person betting on the horse had very little at stake, and the horses were all killing each other instead of racing.

Aamon laughs. "No. But Mammon and Asmodeus's humans are also in the woods. They have been stalking one another for quite some time, now."

"What about Oakley?"

"The girl whose eye you removed? I have not seen her. She may be resting."

That makes sense. Oakley did just get back from the hospital, after all. It's interesting that Reynard and Mona are out here somewhere, and Noah and I never ran into them. Maybe I should go looking and try to catch the two of them off guard?

On second thought, going off on my own to find Mona and Reynard probably isn't worth it. They've had their eyes on each other since day one. If I interfere with whatever they've got going on, they might come after me to make me stay out of it, and I don't think I could fight off both of them at once. I wasted a lot of energy on the grave, since Noah didn't exactly help out. I'd be better off trying to catch one of them alone, if I want to try and kill them, or even just talk about being allies. And if I do want to be allies, I probably shouldn't sneak up on them in the dark.

Besides, the woods here are huge, and pretty much surround campus. I could ask Aamon exactly where they saw Mona and Reynard, but it might be a twenty minute walk from where I am. And, anyway, I should do something with the shovels. It'd be kind of suspicious if someone saw me out here next to a huge pile of dirt and -

"Hey, kid. What're you doing out here?"

Shit.

I tense up, reaching for the knife in my pocket, but I relax once I see who it is. Just another student. I vaguely recognize them - I think we probably have a class together, or they're just someone who's always out and about around campus. It looks like they came out to the woods to smoke. A lot of people do that, especially at night.

I guess I could lie to them about what I'm doing. They don't seem to notice the blood on my scarf, or be too curious about the pile of dirt and the shovels, but they might get suspicious the longer we stay here. I could also start a conversation and try to lead them off in a different direction in the woods, but there's a chance we'd end up in the middle of whatever Mona and Reynard are doing. Or...

I reach down to my pocket again, feeling for the handle of the knife.

Liiiiiiie.

You were digging a hole to help a buddy of yours collect samples for this wierd ecology class he's taking. You let him go on ahead with the stuff he collected while you stayed behind to clean up. Dude doesn't have a lot of stamina for physical excursion.

(This explains the two shovels, and isn't easily falsifiable if he happens to know all of your classes).

What's he up to? Just a walk in the woods, or is he taking nature classes too?

"Oh, you know, just...class project stuff," I say, not entirely unconvincingly. I look behind me to see if Aamon is still there, but they've vanished. It's probably for the best - I'd have a harder time explaining them than I would the grave, I think. I flip my scarf while I talk, using my hand to cover the bloodstains and hoping it doesn't draw attention to them instead. "I was going to film a video out here, but it's too dark now, and the friend who was helping me had to go to bed."

The stranger snaps their fingers. "Oh yeah, you're in my film studies class, aren't you? Your name is...Luke or Luca or something, right?"

"Lucas, yeah."

"Lucas, right. I'm Vox."

The name clicks something into place in my mind. Vox Ambrose. Vox Ambrose, progeny of famous nature photographer Gunner Ambrose and famous performance artist Talia Young, is standing here in the woods, talking to me. Their parents are basically celebrities in the art world - I'm pretty sure Talia Young and my mom run in a lot of the same social circles.

"What's with the sunglasses at night?" I ask, trying to keep cool.

"They're prescription." Vox laughs. "I can't find my regular glasses, so I've got no choice but to look like a total douche at night."

"Oh."

I really thought it was to hide the fact that they were stoned, but now that they're out from behind the trees, I can smell that they're just smoking a regular cigarette.

"You want a walk back to your dorm?" Vox asks. "It's pretty dark out here, and I've got a light if you don't. I'd hate for you to trip over a tree root in the dark and break something."

I could use the light of my phone to get back, and it'd give me more time to talk to Aamon, or try to pinpoint Reynard and Mona's whereabouts. But if I walk with Vox back to the dorms, it could give me an alibi whenever the grave in the woods is discovered.
>>
No. 720277 ID: 96aae7

Stick with Vox! You don't want to get caught up in a fight between Reynard and Mona, and you can probably talk to Aamon when you get back to your dorm. Plus, that alibi could be really useful!
>>
No. 720282 ID: 861db5

So that means killing him could be more trouble than it's worth. His death and/or disappearance would make waves, bring outside scrutiny from people with a lot of resources.

"Yeah, that sounds good," I tell Vox.

We start walking off in the direction of the dorm buildings. They're not so far from here, but the company is nice, and at least I'll have an alibi that isn't Noah. I don't know Vox very well, but they seem like someone I could convince to cover for me in a pinch.

"What were you filming?" they ask. It's not a suspicious question - they sound more like they're just trying to make conversation with a classmate they don't know very well.

"Just some nature footage for another film class," I lie. "My friend brought some lights to rig up, but he turned in early, so I had to start packing up, too."

"Nice, nice," they say, with more politeness than genuine interest. They snuff out their cigarette and flick it to the ground, and we keep walking in silence.

My eyes have pretty much adjusted to the darkness by now. I think I can see the dorms up ahead, a little ways out of the woods. But right as I spot them, I hear a noise. Raised voices, somewhere close by.

"What was that?" Vox asks.

I chew my lip. It could be Mona and Reynard, or it could be a couple of regular students hanging out in the woods. It could be a murder in progress, or it could be nothing. What do I tell them?
>>
No. 727003 ID: b17b81

Better to not go looking for a fight right now. Besides, don't you feel like you've murdered enough people today? I'd say something along the lines of "It must be a couple arguing; wouldn't want to get dragged into their business, right?".

Do you still have the shovel/shovels on you? If you did go to meet them, it would be easier to explain 'self defense' to the dude with a tool you had on you than a knife.
