I got the thing, I wasn’t caught by the arbiters and, on top of all, I also got a good laugh out of this… It’s almost disappointing that it’s over, but if I still have luck, maybe the others are out doing their own tasks, so I may be able to have some time for myself! Also my claws could use a bit of sharpening, and it will be nice to do it without anyone annoying me.

There is still quite a long way before I arrive to where my master is, and I will have to report to him as soon as I get there… I know I said that I wasn’t going to tell a thing… But maybe I should tell my master about the funny familiar I meet…? They were alright I guess… But I don’t really know if I should trust them… Then again, it’s not like I trust my master either.

If you tell your master, he's just going to close the loophole and order you to destroy familiars belonging to others encountered on missions or something. Which will drastically limit your fun.

Besides me, there are at least other two familiars… Both of them annoying in their own little ways… But I overheard that there may be more around, only not here.

>>795632
>But I though you were his little Leo.
At this rate, I’m starting to think that giving names is a human thing, something they simply can’t resist to do… Also, I’m not even sure if “Leo” is the name he put me… But I think it was something on similar to that… I think...

>What is the reason for your mistrust?
… Well, for a start, he wouldn’t tell anything about what’s going on. He would just order me around. It’s not like I hate him though, it’s just that I think sometimes that, in his hurry and paranoia, he makes the wrong choice and sooner or later he will only hurt himself... Again.

>If you tell your master, he's just going to close the loophole and order you to destroy familiars belonging to others encountered on missions or something. Which will drastically limit your fun.
Huh, that’s a very good point… Yes, won’t tell a thing, If that familiar ends up being problem, I will simply scorch it.

…I always wondered why humans never come through here; it’s nasty, yes, but it can still work for moving around, I need to make sure that the book stays safe from both water and dirt, but I’m sure not all humans need to do that.

I finally reach our hideout. The door is locked, but activating the magical rune on its side opens it, making sure that only magic users can get in.

Once inside, most of the place is lit with magic, but it’s hard to notice from the outside. It seems only my master is here right now, the other mages must be outside doing whatever they do.

“Master, I’m back!”

He was reading a book, I don’t know what it is, nor do I care.

“So … you found something there?”

“Yes, a book, it has some magic in it.”

“A book? Good, I will take a look at it later… Go and store it with the rest of the magical artifacts...”

“…Yes master…”

He goes back to his book soon after my answer.

“And, Leonna, I don’t have any new task for you right now… but I will need you to stay around until further notice…”

… I could swear he changes my names constantly…

I move towards the room that they have designated to be our warehouse. In there we have stored a ton of magical artifacts we have acquired from the city… Personally I don’t understand why we are doing this; we just acquire any item that has some magic in it, as weak and insignificant as it may be. With time it has been getting harder as I’m sure we have almost cleaned the whole city of magical artifacts. That and the arbiters seem to know that we are behind most of those thefts, and they simply won’t get off of our asses… I really wish I could just end them...

I put the book where we leave all the new artifacts found... And the lack of other artifacts tells me that other familiars may have yet to come back, which means that at least for now I’m completely free to move around as I please.

Alright, this day seems to be a very good day, I better enjoy it while I can… Hmm… I wonder where I should go… I could go to the familiar’s room, where we “rest”, clean and prepare and my claws could use a little bit of sharpening, and I could clean myself too… Or I could go to the training grounds, being able to train without anyone there to criticize me would be nice for a change... Or maybe there is another interesting idea I’m not taking into account?

Training sound good. You got to enjoy the chance to have that room jus for yourself.
If that book wasn't special, why did you burned the library? This can't be the standing procedure for all magical items in the city.

Proper paranoia check: that might prevent anyone non-magical from getting in, but doesn't that make your residence stand out to anyone who can see magic?

>Geeze, how does the bossman keep track of them all?
I really don’t know, the boss here seems to be very influential, yet I got nothing to confirm he is the head of the whole thing… nor I know how many people are in involved.

Not knowing anything used to make me angry before, but after a lot of time I guess I just got used to it.

>What's that mark on his neck?
I think it was a burn mark... I want to believe that it was done while he was sparring with one of the other mages, but there is the chance that he wounded himself while practicing… I didn’t mention anything since there isn’t much I can do or say and he already knows very well how to heal those. Not to mention he may be ashamed of it.

>>796086
>If that book wasn't special, why did you burned the library?
>What was the point of burning down the library, then?
I didn't Burn the library! I… I managed to sneak into the library without anyone noticing, And I couldn't believe my luck when I found the whole building empty!

While searching through the library I found my objective in a display on one of the rooms of the building… It seemed easy to get, so I broke it with what I had at hand, and quickly grabbed the book… and then, suddenly, fire started sprouting through the whole building! I surrounded myself and the book with a fire armor, to protect me and the book and started running, but my escape route was blocked by debris... The fire was spreading far more quickly than I had anticipated, so I was forced to escape through another way…

I don’t know what started the fire… It wasn’t magical, so it couldn’t have been a magic ward that I activated… Yet the fire was too powerful and too sudden to be a normal fire…

Anyone who can see magic will notice this, but they would also notice a ton of other marks on the sewer, only some of them will lead to this place. And that gives us enough time to tell if they are hostile, and “proceed accordingly”, which, as far as I remember, means “lure them and kill them.”

>Let's train.
>You got to enjoy the chance to have that room jus for yourself.
Good. Let’s get to the training room!

This room is filled with whatever we could use in order to make dummies and targets. They may not be as accurate as the real thing, but I guess they work. In the center of the room, there is a small “arena”, where familiars and masters can fight.

Most of the time is one on one, familiar against familiar, since we are the ones that make most use of this place. They say that it is to test our might and hone our skills... I would believe it if I didn’t knew better…

There are some dummies ready to be taken down, around 5 of them, so I start with that. I still remember exactly where to attack to get the best results. And to never stay put, unless I want the guards to have time to aim. I used to cover my claws in fire before, but since I’m training, I decided not to do that.

It doesn’t take me long until I’m done with the dummies… In fact, it takes more time to replace them that to use them. Anyway, I did it fast and clean, although that shouldn’t be surprising for someone who has to fight against inanimate objects.

Later, I go to the "Shooting gallery"… I always have been bad at this… I prepare and launch some small fireballs at a target pretty much all of them but one miss… And the one that hit the target wouldn’t have done much since it hit in the cuirass… I could make them strongerto make them more usefull against protected targets, but that takes me more time, and the chances of me missing are too high to make it even worth it…

It’s not really a problem, I'm fast enough to close the distance between my target and me, so I would just attack with my claws. Still, it’s somewhat annoying that the others will constantly remind me of this.

"Hello there, I see that you finished your assignment fast.”

“Oh… Hi… Yes, I guess I did…”

Well, I guess the fun is over… They are to "bossman’s familiar"… They are mostly based on earth magic.

“Good for you! I didn’t expect to met you here, I though you disliked training.”

“Only sometimes…”

“… And I see that you are still having problems hitting anything from afar…”

…Ok… they may be annoying me...

“Well, At least you managed to make, most of, your attacks land somewhat closer to your target than last time… Good for you.”

I would think that One out of six is better than one out of ten…

“I seriously don’t understand how you are having so much trouble in range combat… You are fine in close quarters, but for some rea-“

“Oh just shut up… I’m getting better and stronger and that’s that. I’m not here to impress you.”

“Is that so…? Are you seriously claiming you are getting stronger? With FIRE magic? Don’t get me wrong, but you shouldn’t get your hopes up. Are you sure you don’t want to learn other elemental magic?”

Grrrr!

“No, thank you!”

“Look, I’m trying to help you here. But, if you say you are perfectly fine, what do you say if we have a training fight to see how much you last? Don’t worry; I won’t fight you with my full strength, that would be very unfair from my part after all.”

Ffuuuck! I really want to just make him to fucking shut up and shallow those words! … But fighting him would be foolish… I already lost several times against him, and the fact that they “aren’t fighting in full strength” only makes it more annoying and… Humiliating… They are just better than me, and they know it….

I always thought they looked ridiculous with that thing…

>Have you tried making your fireballs spin, before firing them? It might help to stabilize them.
Uhhh… Yes… Now that I remember, my master said something about that some time ago… I forgot about trying it though…

But wait… how is that going to make my fireballs more accurate? Wouldn’t that make them even more inaccurate because it would move around…? … I think I’m not in the mood for thinking this much… It will be better to try and see…

I go back to the range to try to hit the target with a fireball, only this time it will be spinning… It’s kind of hard to make, but after some failed attempts trying to make it be… I finally manage to make sure it doesn’t just undo itself…

Alright, time to throw it!

And I miss... Again.

Well, at least I think this one was a bit faster than the ones before… I think… Dammit, I wasn’t even paying attention was I? Crap…

I probably should take some time before trying anything else… If this familiar is here, it means the other one is around too, probably in the familiar’s room... I don’t think I will be able to fully restrain myself if I met them and they proceed to be annoying… Or maybe I could speak to my master; he may have finished reading whatever he was reading, maybe I could ask him something, as long as it doesn’t have anything to do with their objective or something of the sort, they already ordered me not to ask that.

Too bad, but sharpshooting doesn't seem to be in your portfolio right now. You'll have to keep relying on close combat skills in the field.

>maybe I could ask him something, as long as it doesn’t have anything to do with their objective or something of the sort, they already ordered me not to ask that
What have you already figured out about their objective, actually?

That order sort of has a reverse loophole built in. Anything you try to ask about but can't is related to their objective. With some care, you could use that to discover more about the objective without them telling you.

I’ll just leave the training room, for now…

>You'll have to keep relying on close combat skills in the field.
As I always did! Seriously, I don’t even think it could be that useful to attack from afar, especially since most of the guards carry those … cannon things…? Whatever, I saw those things in use, even if we can take quite a lot of punishment and not feel pain, I don’t think it will be nice to get hit by one of those…

>What have you already figured out about their objective, actually?
Not much really… Only that they are interested in collecting a ton of magical artifacts, and they don’t get along with the arbiters, probably because the arbiters also seem to be trying to acquire as much magic as possible... Or is it the other way around…? I never could figure it out really…

>With some care, you could use that to discover more about the objective without them telling you.
Yes, I know, but I’m bad at pretending, I don’t think I could make them talk without them noticing… specially if the Boss is around, he isn’t very friendly towards familiars, and I don’t think anyone could fool him.

…Speaking of the devil…

“Familiar! Have you seen anything strange?”

“What do you mean, sir?”

“Any magical essence being where it shouldn’t be?”

“… No, I don’t think I saw anything, why do you ask?”

“… Nothing...”

And he proceeds to just walk pass me… That was weird… He rarely talks to us; in fact, he ignores us most of the time… He would only talk to his own familiar...

Maybe the mage for the so-called "independent" familiar you ran into? Maybe they left a clue or trace somewhere the boss could find it.

Hmm… Perhaps something interesting and whatever it was, it must have caught him off guard, but I really can’t think on what that could be…

>Maybe the mage for the so-called "independent" familiar you ran into?
Could be… But I don’t think the boss would start acting the way he is acting just because of a random mage or familiar… whatever it is, it has to be somewhat serious, and I bet that it has to do with the arbiters…

Also, I wouldn’t really like if they found it out this fast, That familiar caught my curiosity, and I would hate to have to destroy them before knowing a little bit more… Although, maybe they could ally with us, but it's hard to tell what are the boss plans

I decide to go and talk with my master, I know I said I got used to not knowing much, but I have to ask my master about this. If something is happening, that means I could finally see some real action, and since the boss is occupied talking to his familiar in the training room and the other mage outside, my master should be alone right now!

“What do you need, Leo?”

He’s acting weird too… He seems very enthusiastic… What is going on?

“Is everything alright? I saw the boss acting a little bit weird.”

He looks around, probably making sure no one is listening, and then he talks…

“You know I can’t tell you much, by the High mage’s orders.”

“I know He is not my master, master, besides, he seemed very concerned.”

And now he’s starting to make me worry too…

“Fine, I will tell you what I know, I hope you are ready!”

This is increasingly worrying…

“I don’t know many details, but what I got us that the arbiters have done something, something big. Apparently they started to transfer magical energy into the tower in the center of the city by using some sort of device… We already know where it is, it wasn’t really hard to find in the darkness, and it is near the territory you cover…”

Ok, I know that the arbiters are crazy and all of that… but this is new… Well, at least it looks like we are soon going to be taking the fight to them, for a change…

“And the boss will send his familiar to wreak havoc on the arbiters’ plans...”

“Actually that’s when you come in.”

“… Master?”

“I have been talking with the High mage. Since you know more of that area than the other two familiars; I told him that maybe you should be the one to be sent to do this mission, He still has to say what he decided, but I got the feeling I managed to convince him. This could be the chance we were waiting for to prove yourself!”

… Did I hear right…? I’m actually going to have the chance to actually attack the arbiters instead of just sneaking around and keeping my head low? I’m really looking forward to it now!

“I can see your excitement but the high mage shouldn’t know that I told you anything, try to keep it low and act as you didn’t heard anything.”

I have never fought an arbiter myself, although they seem to be simple weaklings that rely heavily on the guard to do their dirty job.

“Master, Can you tell me anything about the Arbiters?”

“I already ordered you to avoid fighting with an arbiter, Right? Just remember, if you encounter one do not attack him and leave, If possible, without them noticing you.”

“And if they attack me?”

“As I said, do not fight them. Do whatever you need to do, defend yourself if you must, but do not fight them and try to escape.”

…It doesn’t seem Like I will be able to get more information than that, and it doesn’t seem like I will be allowed to discover much by myself either… As far as I know, the arbiters can see magic in the same way we do, but they seem have trouble distinguishing between different sources of magic… They also have a good amount of magical artifacts, but I don’t know if they posses any sort of actual magic. If they do, they rarely use it.

I take my time to sharpen my claws, they aren’t going to be perfect, but they will do the job... I would have liked to have time to clean myself from ash and the dirt, but I didn’t expect another mission so soon…

A few minutes pass before we all are called to the arena.

“Familiars, we have a problem. The arbiters, although we are not exactly sure how or why, are trying to concentrate a great amount of magical energy on the top of the tower, and we need you to stop that."

Straight to the point as always.

“They are using some sort of artifact to move said energy, we don’t have any particular description, but we expect that you will be able to recognize it when you see it. Once you find it, I will need you to find a way to destroy it. Chances are that you will not be able to carry this thing and even if you can, it could be dangerous to bring it here.”

Weird, most of the time they would like to bring things here to study them…

“The fire familiar here will be the one who will go first, I need you to recognize any threat and see if you can take down that thing on your own. Air familiar, you will be watching the surroundings; you will see if there is anything suspicious near the zone, and inform the others if something happens. My familiar will be on reserve this time, and will help the fire familiar if needed. Now, get moving. And don't waste your existence.”

“…”

“Is that what I have to stop…?”

“This is a lot bigger that what I expected… Well Fiery Fire, I wish you luck handling whatever that is! Don’t fuck it up!”

The wind familiar leaves and proceeds to scout around the area, mostly keeping an eye for patrols or anything that could be troublesome. Meanwhile the other familiar and I get to a building that is close to where that magic trail gets closer to the land..

Whatever is attracting that much magic it seems to be inside that building... I remember it; it’s very old and a ton of people live in there, I would say that at least 10 families, although I don’t see anyone else but those guards. There are four entrances in each side while there is some sort of plaza in the middle, and each building has at least one pipe going from the ceiling to the ground that I could use to climb up.

It seems to be heavily guarded; the front door and all the windows are closed, while there are guards both on the ground and in the ceiling. I wonder why the arbiters put that artifact here instead of somewhere like the guards barracks, those are close by...

“That’s weird…”

“What?”

“… Hmm... Nothing… You want to prove yourself now, right? You are completely sure you don’t want me to take on this mission?”
“I think I’ll do fine, thank you.”

“Well, Then I wonder if you will be able to figure it out yourself… and just to remind you, we don’t exactly know what’s in there so try to be careful. If you want to ask any question or need advice, ask me now.”

“Are you worried about me?”

“I’m just making sure you are ready… I wouldn’t want to complete the mission myself and have to save you at the same time…”

“Anyway, it doesn’t look like you are going to be able to enter without taking down at least one guard. Good luck, if you need my aid you know how to call me, I will be watching your progress from here...”

… I don’t know what’s up with him... Anyway I need to choose a way to get there, and if there is anything I should ask the earth familiar I should do it right now.

The magical trail is very similar to what we saw at the library. Not sure what to make of it.

I don't think you need to worry too much about any family. I wouldn't expect they to be allowed to remain there after the place was take by guards to protect a magical artifact, at least not alive.
The front seem well guarded. The two stationary make very difficult to ambush and on top of that they are in the line of sigh of the left sentinel. Not a good option.
The right sentinel is in a good location to keep an eye at the pipe, but for some reason isn't close enough to the edge to see a familiar climbing it. You could make an attack with the element of surprise at your favor, but that would need to be quick to prevent him from alerting the others. He is in the field of vision of the left sentinel, but if that one isn't paying attention you could kill the right one without the other noticing. But even so, the left guy is higher and will notice is not the absence of the guard, his corpse.
The best approach would be climbing the left building. If you manage get up there you would be able sneak behind the left sentinel and no one would see the top of the taller building.

… Maybe they sent the families somewhere else, I think simply killing them would have been troublesome to say the least, and I don’t see any indications of fighting happening here.

>The best approach would be climbing the left building
I get closer, the grass is tall enough to hide my movements, but even so, I don’t think they could see me at this distance.

There is in fact a pipe in the left building, and far enough from the left entrance to not be seen by the guards stationed there, so I use it to climb up. I get almost to the top of the building, and then I see another guard on top of it. He doesn’t seem to be looking this way, but I still put the pipe between myself and them.

I reach to the top of the building, and there is another guard there, but he isn’t looking this way… It would seem that this building is the tallest around here, and unless I’m wrong, the artifact must be in the plaza just passing this guard.

There is an open door near him that goes inside the building and I think I could reach it without anyone noticing me, but I don’t know what or who would be in there. Or I could stay in the ceiling for now but I will have to do something if I don’t want to be seen, so far, I only saw three guards up here.

I wasn’t really made for knocking people unconscious. I don’t think that sharp blades can do the same, right? So unless I can think of a way to knock people out with something sharp as my claws, or with fire magic, no, I don’t think it will be possible for me to leave him unconscious, or at least, not without risking alarming everyone around here.

“Hey…”

Crap…! Did he saw me?

“Can you tell me again why are we freezing our asses here?”

“What?”

Good… he was just talking to the other guard… it would seem they will be talking for some time and I think they will be distracted, but one of them will notice if the other one suddenly stops talking…
>>
No. 811711 ID: 13fded

If they are talking it's likely that they are facing each other, and since you are at the taller building the other guard won't be able to see anything moving on this roof. This is your chance to get behind this guard without him noticing.
You are right that the other guard will notice the absence of the closer to you, but if you wait until the conversation end to kill him his absence may pass unnoticed.
One of the things you should be doing is open the path to other familiars, killing the sentry with the most cover certainly help. On the other hand if your actions are noticed the remaining soldiers will be much more alert. I say take the risk and kill him as soon as those two stop talking.

>This is your chance to get behind this guard without him noticing.
Yes, I need to get closer to them after all…

I climb back up, and I sneak closer to the nearest guard while they talk… they didn’t notice me at all…

“I mean, why the hell are we guarding this place?”

“You know why, the arbiters gave the order, some magical stuff, we don’t get to know.”

“We were supposed to be off duty tonight, so what in the hells could be that important?”

“I saw them moving something inside… Maybe we are guarding that?”

“They have the barracks nearby, where there are others stationed. They could have just put it there…”

“Well, what you want me to tell you? The arbiters act in weird ways, and there is not much we can do about it. If they want something they will get it.”

“I know… I just wonder if those mages are really a threat…”

“And what would be a real threat to you then?”

“For one? That monster in the Sewers that keeps killing guards and whoever else it finds!”

“So are you saying you would rather be on the sewers right now?”

“N-No I… *sigh…”

“Just remember to not speak loudly next time if an arbiter is around… you don’t want to be scolded for about half an hour, while they make sure that the captain makes you work extra on the barracks later…”

Actually… I don’t think I see anyone in the plaza… which is kind of strange…

Whatever is that is moving the magic energy seems to be on top of that fountain, in the center of the plaza, But I can’t quite tell what it is… In fact, looking at that place directly makes me feel a little weird for some reason…

It would seem that the fountain is dry, but with all that magical energy around it’s hard to tell anything else…

Hmm… I don’t hear anyone coming this way, but I should probably check to be sure.

At least, this corridor seems to be empty and I don’t think I hear any guard around this place, but there should be some around here right?

There seems to be countless doors to different rooms just in this corridor, and some furniture here and there… This place seems to be completely empty. There are some doors that seem to be open, but I can’t see what’s inside.

Should I check around this place, or should I go directly to the plaza?

It's beyond strange that they wouldn't guard this thing, beside the place is an open space that could easily be used to ambush you with long range attacks. You should investigate what is going on around here, map the layout and maybe depopulate a little.
Is it possible that the artifact is beneath the fountain? Maybe there is a room underground.

I know… Although if the arbiters can see magical energy, then they probably left as soon as it started being very annoying to look at…

… I really hope I don’t end up meeting an arbiter inside this place.

>Is it possible that the artifact is beneath the fountain?
I guess it is possible… But the magical energy fall just to the top of the fountain and then it would go back up towards the tower. Although, a good ammount of the magical energy just spreads around the place aimlessly instead of reaching for the tower. I’m sort of surprised that I’m not seeing any sort of magical energy inside the building…

Wait… if it is below the fountain… wouldn’t that mean they put it on the sewers? Because there should be an entrance outside the building if that’s the case, but we didn’t see any guards or sign of them when we came here through the sewers…

>You should investigate what is going on around here, map the layout and maybe depopulate a little.
Alright… there aren’t many the doors that are open, but let’s see what’s behind the door number 1…

They pass by and it doesn’t seem they noticed me… I think it is safe to assume that they are patrolling inside the building… good thing I made an habit of cleaning the blood of my claws and body to avoid leaving any trail…

This room seems to be used for storage… There barrels, boxes, weapons and armor… In this place I can probably find everything the guards use, and I think we could make quite a number of dummies with everything here...

Good, It would seem that the security isn’t that tight once inside the building… I think I saw at least one other patrol, so there may be at least two in the building…Although I don’t know how long it will last, they could still find out that there are guards missing, or find the bodies.

With my magic I can make fire of that temperature, perhaps even more, if I focus… But maybe it can help me with other stuff? I wonder if I find a way to make it burn even stronger…

Anyway, I’m taking some of it, it’s a shame I don’t have much to carry it with because this thing is kickass… I just need to be careful to not set it on fire by accident. Hmm, I guess I could use the little containers the Guards use to transport it, at least until I get something better.

And that order is kicking in... “If you are having fun, focus on your mission”. I probably should look through the window and continue with my task…

The fountain is right there… I still can’t quite tell from here what the artifact is, but there is clearly something on top of it.

I see two guards on the plaza near the fountain… When did they get there…? They don’t seem to be alarmed and I don’t hear commotion in the building, so I don’t think they found the bodies yet… I don’t see anyone in the buildings looking at the plaza, so that may be helpful.

There some sort of magical essence circling around the fountain. From this distance though, I can’t tell if it’s just residue, or there is something more to it… Still, it is very suspicious.

There are some bushes and a few trees near the buildings I could use to move unnoticed, maybe even get a bit closer to the fountain, but I don’t see anywhere to hide near the fountain…

>It kinda looks like the fountain is overflowing with. Magic like a cup would if you poured too much water in it
As expected, the magic is already acting like something that isn’t there or doesn’t exist. The fountain is empty, but the magic is flowing like it was water… Much of it just spills around the fountain and then disappears back to inexistence, only a slight portion of the magical essence that falls on the fountain manages to go to the tower…

>i think you could probably ruin the powder by getting it wet if you have the chance
Maybe, but I don’t really have water at the hand… the fountain isn’t working, and I didn’t saw any other water source around...

I guess I could use magical water, although I can’t really make much, and the fact that my body is somewhat dirty isn’t helping… That should be enough to fill a small glass of water, but I don’t think it is enough for the whole barrel… The magical water will cease to exist after a time, so I don’t think it will be permanent.

I move from bush to bush, but I don’t think I have to be very careful; none of them seem to be expecting anything, nor paying too much attention. And even if they saw me, they may confuse me with a slightly larger cat.

I finally manage to get closer to the circle around the Fountain… upon closer inspection; it’s clearly a ward... It’s very simple, although I can’t tell what it does once it activates, but it could do a simple sound or alarm, or go as far as to make a small explosion. It’s weird though… This thing is clearly the work of a mage, but the magical essence doesn’t seem to be any different from the one being transported to the tower… That’s not normal…

I never really thought about it. I guess I don’t really care who lives or who dies, and it’s not like I can ask the guards nicely to move away and let me do whatever I wish, they will just attack me on sight. And if I have to kill them to complete my orders, then I don’t have a choice either, but it’s better to not think about it.

I think I already have 18 or 20 kills, including the two that I got in this mission so far. I count them as victories, I guess, all the others do it anyway, and it’s not like the guards wouldn’t do the same if they had the chance, we are nothing but monsters to them after all.

>>819992
While that is a possibility, chances are it will cause too much noise and alarm everyone. Besides, fuck them; I’m not going to give that familiar another reason to brag unless I really need it, especially when I’m so close to my objetive!

… My master and the others would probably be very interested in this ward… Too bad; this thing is standing between me and my objective. Let’s see if I can try to break it... Hmmm… Perhaps. I only focus that much when I want to make powerful and fiery attacks; in any other case I would use my fire claws, or just my claws. They don’t come up fast, and they aren’t really powerful against metal, such as the one used by the Guards for protection, but against cloth and any other flammable objects, they are very powerful … Perhaps this dust could help me get those strikes ready faster.

Ohhh… I just had a Nasty idea… I could throw this dust to my opponent, and then use my fire claws to set them on fire! Although I don’t think that’s the kind of stuff that would be helpful while sneaking.

The energy on the fountain is still flowing… and the ward wouldn’t just disappear if someone triggered it… Instead it would do what it is supposed to do when activated and leave some residue behind…

I don’t see anyone close to the area in which the ward was… I don’t think a Human was the one that broke it, even if we are talking about the one who made it, the only way to destroy a ward is to get closer to it… I think the only option left is that there is another familiar hidden somewhere here…

“The magical essence can be seen from anywhere. I didn’t know what it was…”

They would say it was only curiosity...

“Why did you destroy the ward then?”

“… I wanted to get a closer look.”

“I’m not buying that one.”

“Alright… I wanted to destroy whatever that thing is…”

“And let me guess, your “free will” decided that”

“…Yes…”

… Is it really going to continue with that…? While it is still a bit funny, I think it will soon grow old. Maybe I should be giving them more to work with?

Anyway, I don’t really think they could be a threat to me or my mission at the moment, and trying to take him down would result in the guards noticing my presence. Hmmm... What to do…?

Hmm, I guess I will just ignore them and let them be, for now.

“Well, I’m sorry to inform you, but if any familiar is going to destroy that thing, it will be me. I recommend you to stay at a distance and not intervene.”

“Wait…!”

I move pass them, preparing to make a run towards one of the guards. I think I would be able to take down one of them and then make a run for the fountain before the other guard can even react to me. Once that’s done, I would have a ton of options for my escape.

“I said wait! Something is happening…”

“What…?”

I didn’t notice it until now but... The two guards seem to be… sick? Maybe even in pain… they don’t seem to be making any noise, or at least, I can't hear them.

“Those symptoms… Humans aren’t supposed to be exposed to that much magical energy, let alone for a long time. At this rate, they will die a slow death…”

How does it know that…? Doesn’t matter, It would seem that I won’t be needing a lot of planning after all. By the looks of it I will just need to walk towards the artifact and destroy it. Then again I could wait and see, these two guards seem to be about to fall in any second, so, to be safe, I could wait for that and then carry on from there.
>>
No. 830311 ID: b9b4da

Patience, my felt feline friend. A few seconds more isn't going to kill them, and once you free the mana from the artifact, the danger to them will pass. No need to risk your skein for their skin.

Heh… Yes, they probably got themselves into this situation on their own; I have no need to take any risk for them. And if I end up saving them, it will be just by chance.

“So, are they done for?”

“Not really… If they stop being exposed, and as long as they rest and drink plenty of water they could survive, but it could take them weeks before full recovery.”

“You seem to know an awful ton about this…”

It doesn’t say anything and it doesn’t seem to be doing much... I would ask more questions but it doesn’t take long until the guards fall, they start vomiting and don’t seem like they will be able to put any resistance. Now THIS is my chance!

“Wait-“

It stops talking, but I don’t hear anything else, and just a quick glance back at them tells me that they are ok.

I still can’t quite tell from here what that artifact is, but it seems to be some sort of a box. Probably wood, I guess I’ll just burn it.

“Agh…! *cough *cough”

“*Blagh-“

… Wait… The guards weren’t this noisy just a second ago… In fact I think they weren’t making any noise at all…

This thing prevent sound to propagate beyond a certain point and the magic is so intense it make humans get ill. You are a magical construction so it's reasonable to assume you and your spells will also be affected.
I'm tired of trying to guess what a magic I don't understand will do. Go for it with flames and black powder. Let's get this over with.

Yes, I don't understand what or how this is happening, but whatever it is, I don’t want stick and figure it out!

“Look above you!”

When I look up, I see a sword falling down on me, I try to move out of the way, but I don’t think I’m going to do it fast enough. Then I feel like I’m being pushed.

The sword cuts deeply into my arm. My claws stopped it before it could cut even deeper, that and the badly alignment of the blade. I’m afraid that if I take the claws off that arm, I could damage my arm even more.

It would seem it was a trap, and the artifact isn’t trying to hide anymore. It’s absorbing quite a ton of magical essence… And I would bet that it is using the swords of both guards. That other familiar must be quite entertained right now.

Alright, the claw is coated in black powder and now… Holy Shit!

>Before leaving take a look at the remaining. What was the artefact?
I think it was some sort of a music box, although it would be impossible to tell what exactly it was now… I hope that none takes a look at the plaza, as it is right now, it's hard to miss it.

The other familiar seems to be talking to one of the fallen guards, they are still alive, although one of them is already knocked out. Soon after, they leave towards one of the bushes... Well, I guess they got out of this one safe and sound…

Wait… The familiar is coming this way now…

“You need to be more careful next time…”

They are carrying something.

“You could have gotten both you and me destroyed with what you did back there.”

“… You … found my leg…?”

“Yes, and luckily it seems that whatever the spell that was nullifying sounds lasted just until after the explosion so the other guards are still unaware of what happened. Now let me help you.”

“Wait… “

“… As you are, I don’t think you have many chances of getting out of here.”

“While having two legs would definitely help... I could find a way to get out of here. But if you put my leg back, they will noticed that I was repaired, and if they ask, I will have to answer to them…”

Its better not let them know about the free guy... your boss doesn't have much sense of humor.

How fast can you move with just one leg? And with the guards inside still patrolling, can you still hide?

Maybe you could take the fix and rip your leg off before getting out of the building, if it sounds workable. Or the familiar could make a disposable fix and save you the trouble. And how did they got here, anyway? Ask, it might be a better escape route.

If all else fails, and you can't really get out of there with one leg, would you rather let your boss kill this guy or ask for help from the earth familiar?

And if you do decide to ask for help, how exactly would you do so? Can you talk to them telepathically or something?

Author: Sorry for not making an update sooner, college took some of my time and when I noticed I was having some troubles while drawing and writing the update

>Its better not let them know about the free guy... your boss doesn't have much sense of humor.
“Believe me, it will be the best for them to not know about you for now…”

Besides… They may find out that I didn’t tell them about this familiar, and they may punish me for that…

>Maybe you could take the fix and rip your leg off before getting out of the building
I fear that I may actually make things worse by trying to do that…

>Or the familiar could make a disposable fix and save you the trouble
“I don’t think I can do that… Or at least, not without leaving a trace.”

>would you rather let your boss kill this guy or ask for help from the earth familiar?
I would still prefer it if my boss doesn’t hurt them… I don’t think they are a threat, and they also tried to help me… I really don't know what to think of them...I would believe that my master's master would have told us of another friendly familiar...

As for the Earth familiar… I don’t think I want help from them… Besides the fact that I don’t like them much, since sneaking is no longer necessary, they will probably breakthrough the guards’ defenses, grab me, and get out, which could probably put at risk our friend here and alarm the guards of our presence.

>And if you do decide to ask for help, how exactly would you do so?
In order to ask for help, I need to throw a spell up the skies with my magical signature in order for the other familiars to see where I am. It may also call the attention of arbiters, but the guards shouldn’t be able to see it.

Now, throwing it with only one leg may be problematic, but I think I can manage.

>And how did they got here, anyway?
“I climbed the smallest building and hanged from the side of the ceiling while moving closer to the plaza, the guard never looked down… Do you think you can climb with only one leg?”

“I could try, although holding my balance is a bit hard, even when sitting…”

“Ok, let me help you walk, there is a pipe nearby that we could use.”

We climb up the lowest building and just as it said, we hang on the side of the ceiling.

“Whisper if you think you are about to fall, I will use some wind magic to try to help you out.”

We start to slowly move towards the outside… until suddenly we hear some screams…

“We got dead guards! Everyone on alert!”

“Search everywhere! Whoever did this is may be inside!”

It seems they finally found those two…

“…Did you kill one of them?

“Two, yes.”

“… We better hurry before they find us.”

We’re finally out of the building and go towards a nearby house to hide… The guards seem to be on high alert but it doesn’t seem they have seen us…

“Well, we are out… what now?”

“... We part ways… I will regroup with the other familiars, I think it will be best for us if they don't see you.”

“…Yes… Well, here’s your leg, you may need it later… bye.”

“Bye…”

I give them some time to get away, and then throw a signal to the skies to make the others know I’m outside of the building… Then, the Earth familiar throws another one to show us where we are going to be regrouping…

>How fast can you move with just one leg?
Very slow… In fact walking like this is really annoying, I hope to never have to do this again… I also don’t really like to walk on "four legs", even if sometimes is useful.

“Yes, I noticed…”

“Well, let me be the first to congratulate you on your success… although it doesn’t seem like you want to celebrate.”

I just want to get this over with…

“… So, how was the mission?“

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t know, was there something interesting? Or suspicious? Come on, you have no idea how boring it was to keep an eye for patrols, of which there weren’t many by the way, and with the earth familiar gone for who knows for how long, we might as well talk, even if we are just whispering, to pass time.”

“And if I don’t want to?”

“Then I guess I will just get bored while waiting.”

They should have realized by now you are not a very good conversationist. But that's ok, they survived boredom all this time, now its the same but with a little company.

But you could speak about the artifact, while the memory is fresh in your head. Brag a little, if that's your thing. Just omit the part where you almost killed yourself.

I tell them how everything in the mission went, how I got in, the number of guards, the artifact and the fight, avoiding, almost without consideration, telling them about the familiar and how it helped me.

“… I found that the artifact was very strange, I didn’t expect for it to defend itself by moving objects around, let alone be capable of creating a zone in which sounds couldn’t escape from… Have you seen any magic like that…?”

“I don’t think I have, and I could have never imagined something like that being possible, that’s very surprising…”
