"I'm looking for someone" you say softly

"Ah, well aren't we all." he chuckles

"Sure is raining cats and dogs out there isn't it. You sure you're going to be alright miss? You mentioned family, what're they like?"

A) "My Brother is a musician, he isn't as half as suave as he thinks he is, but he is kind."

B) "My Sister is a secretary, she lives for gossip but has a good head on her shoulders."

C) "My Aunt and Uncle are retired, they bicker a lot but are warm people."

You get the feeling someone is watching you from that window.

You pay your driver and tip him well.
"Take care dear, try not to get too wet."

You rustle a small note out of your pocket

You make your way up to the top floor, the air is musty and damp.

You see two doors one closed, one ajar

You knock on the door, after a few moments you hear the sound of uneven shuffling the door opens a crack.

"A-ah, w-who iis it? a raspy voice mutters

"I'm looking for Harriet Pullman, I'm her sister, is she here?

"A-ah, no just me here, maybe ne-next door, sorry I don't get out much. Now if you'll excuse me I have some tea on."

They shut the door before you have a chance to respond

Quickly check the body to see if she's breathing, look around the room, call for help if she is.

Do we recognize her?

God damn it sis, can't you go five minutes without getting murdered.

Well, use your book of the occult to raise her as a horrible undead already. You won't be able to get her to tell you what happened otherwise.

The half-open door implies that we’re either dealing with a real amateur, or they wanted the body to be found. Is this anybody we knew? Check to make sure whether they’re actually dead, also.

"Check the body to confirm identity. Then call the police."

You linger over the body for a moment. She either isn't breathing or is the world's greatest actor.

It's not your sister, you have no idea who this woman is.

"Oh Harriet, what've you done this time?" you mutter to yourself

"That's what I'd like fine out." You hear a voice in the dark respond, accompanied with sound of a match being lit.

"Hello miss, my name is Jack Barrows." He pauses to light his cigarette.

"I'm looking for a Harriet Pullman. I assume you knew her? I got a tip she was living here, but all I found was this body and a whole lot of empty apartment." He takes a drag off of his cigarette, somehow

"Do you mind if I ask you some questions, Miss?" He pauses in a manner that implies he expects your name.

That depends, do you have a badge? Because if you're not the police I need to find a telephone.

Miss Bernardine Pullman. Harriet is my sister, I do not recognize the deceased.
>>
No. 873034 ID: deec6e

I don't think this guy is dangerous, but back away towards the door. You can stand your ground once you've got a clear shot at the exit.

>Miss...?

"Mrs. Nanaya B. Sines. I'm deeply troubled by whatever's going on here, Mr. Burrows."

The name's a pseudonym, but one you've used before. Your actual name is Madeline "Maddie" Pullman and you are still unmarried. You just don't hand out your actual name to strangers outta nowhere.

>Answering questions

"I'll answer whatever you want, dear, if you'd do me the same kindness. What'd this poor gal die from? Why were you looking for Harriet? Is she in trouble? Why haven't you called the police yet?"

"No, let me ask YOU a question: what's with that creepy skeleton mask?"

Don't give away any extensive information, you're a great scapegoat and if whoever killed this girl is high on the totem pole, you'll need a lack of evidence to get you acquitted for this crime you didn't commit.

Pretty sure that’s not a mask, judging by the hand, and this shouldn’t be surprising based on how we’re personally involved with the occult already, it seems.

“Depends. What manner of Bones might I be giving my name to? I take it you know this poor girl isn’t the one you were looking for?”

(Internal question: Is the occult common enough for there to be slang for certain types like what I’m attempting to use here?)

"Nanaya Sines. Mrs Nanaya Sines." You accentuate the Mrs strongly.

he seems to mentally check that over as he douses his match with an unseen quickness.

"I'll answer whatever you want, dear, if you'd do me the same kindness. What'd this poor gal die from? Why were you looking for Harriet? Is she in trouble? Why haven't you called the police yet?"

You rattle off a number questions before he can respond

" Alright settle down, Mrs Sines. I'm a private detective, I was hired to try and find miss Pullman after she went missing, tracks led me here. Door was busted when I came in, body was here when I got here, same as you. I was about to call the police when I heard you chatting with neighbor, assumed you might be either a lead or the culprit."

"Now how about you answer some of my questions. Firstly what are you doing here? nobody I could find knew she had this apartment. Secondly How well did you know Miss Pullman, did she seem like the type of person to take a life?
>>

All I got's this card with the address. Harriet is a friend of mine, but she's a real pushover; she could never kill someone, 'specially not like this.
>>
No. 874798 ID: 3abd97

All I knew was the address. I didn't know which apartment was Harriet's, and to be honest, I still don't know for sure this is hers.

Harriet is my sister. And no, I can't imagine she's a murderess.

Is that all? If so, we should really telephone the police.
>>
No. 874809 ID: deec6e

>>874640

Snort out a short laugh, despite the situation. Harriet, a murderer? Is he serious?

You're an old friend from overseas, come to town. You'd gotten the address from her by way of letter a little ways back, and were hoping to shack up with her for your stay. Now... not looking likely.

What worried soul has hired Mr. Burrows, by the way? If Harriet is missing, she has to be missing from somewhere.

If you're giving a fake name to the gunshoe don't give away that she's a relative.
>>
No. 874836 ID: c0641d

Don’t admit that she’s your sister, but answer truthfully about whether she could realistically be a suspect. Nepotism has no place on the crime scene. Ask to call the police. Do so, then ask about potential victim ID and cause of death. Keep your eye on the Bones, overall. You’re keeping each other from doing anything too screwy until the police show.

“Hm, if you were hired to find her on account of her being missing, then who’s missing her?”
>>
No. 874855 ID: 555f33
874855

Looking for her too, for personal reasons. And I wouldn't think she could murder. Self-defense maybe, but she's not heartless. That said, it's been awhile and I don't know exactly how desperate a situation she might have been in. Given the stiff, I'd wager it could have been very desperate.
>>
No. 874878 ID: 094652

I knew Harriet since we were kids. Ambitious? You could coat her in gold and put her on a pedestal if you wanted a trophy for the Olympics. Hell, I'd swear she could outdo all the athletes at the same time. But she said she wanted to earn it. No sleeping with bosses. No shady back-deals. No goddamn murder.

... But I guess that's my opinion. It's been over a decade since I even heard from her. Then my father's company goes tits-up, and suddenly I'm dialing dozens of old phone numbers in the old photo albums. Harriet was the only one who listened for more than twenty seconds.

If I'm just her scapegoat, I got words. And two tits to rub all over her straight-ass face.
