My father told me a story once, when I was younger.

That there was a noble hero who gave his life for his kingdom, but no one knew of him. Still, he lived on, and, my father said, haunted the lives of hundreds of other heroes. Made them what they were. And if these heroes died, and were unrecognized for their valience, they went and joined the original: A great cluster and group of souls, that made a thousand heros save the day, and still go unrecognized for their sacrifice and valor.

I never knew he was talking about you, not until today. It's strange... even though this monster looms before me, dwarfs me as a mountain does an ant, I feel no fear. Only... Anticipation. Excitement. Anger.

Even as the gods fly down to flank me, I am not afraid.

"Do not resist. Hand me the artifacts of the end of days, and all shall be well. No one needs to die today! I will make it peaceful, perfect... orderly."

Beside me, Raven scowls.

"Foul abomination! Chaos is freedom! If you take chaos from the world, there shall e no love or creativity in the world! It shall be as stale and unchanging as a stone!"

A sword, unseen until now, rises from the portal. No. No! That belongs to Harumda!

"Is that so. I am sad you think that, Raven. Now die, and give your life to a nobler cause than mere trickery!"

And the sword extends, impaling Raven harshly.

"There's something no one but the creator of this world knows. There's four artifacts of the end of days. The Book of final Deeds. The Scepter of the Final King. The Throne of the Last Prince. And... The only weapon that can kill a god outright. The Sword of the Last Blood."

No... NO!

I watch, helpless, as the sword retracts, letting Raven fall, black feathers flaking from her body as she descends.

RAVEN! No... we can't risk losing any Gods! If they die, the aspect they represent is affected as well! I REALLY LIKED HER TOO!

@All: I disagree! Defensive tactics are required here. Stay the hell away from that sword! And SOMEONE GET RAVEN TO A MEDIC!

Maybe... maybe we can do something! Rosie, distract him with some huge bursts of fire from the spear while dodging his attacks. Don't forget that Flora is really good at combat. Buy us some time... and send us over to Raven!

Raven falls...

And then a bright light shines, gentle and comforting. Raeve raises a massive arm to shield himself as I realize what the source is: A pair of brilliant white wings. And... Hattori, looking up at Raeve. He lands, setting Raven down on a bed that appears out of nowhere.

He gentle covers her, then looks up at him.
"Ehrgal, Coyote, Xom. I daresay that's quite enough."

The others he called out to nod, and together they rush him. Xom's hands covered in a cracking black light, Erhgal a shining meteor, my own grandfather weilding a sword seemingly made of light.

The sword lances out, and is deflected, by a sheild of lettering and circles.

We can do this. I smile. We can beat him!

I fly forth behind them, dodging the glanced blows one after another, then point the spear at him.

I will the fire in it forth with everything I have. A lance of white power rockets forth, hammering into his open palm ineffectively.

"Like a hundred flies you pester me. Begone!" he roars, and sweeps his arm, knocking away three gods as if they were nothing but ants. They fly up beside me.

Alright... alright. Sorry, we kinda panicked for a second there.

Is he out of his hole yet? If not, perhaps we should be killing the ones in charge of the ritual. Or maybe we can close the hole via Earth power, cutting him in half.

...that other idea is fun too.

Right! I'll leave it to you!

"Distract him." I tell the gods, then swoop in low.

STOMP X 5

I fly in, watching two, three, sometimes four demons get crushed in breif warps, trowing them to the ground.

Along with them, those still praying fall into pits, leaving none.

The circle flickers.

Raeve laughs as it vaniashes entirely... along with him. Or so I think. Standing in the center of the circle is him, smaller, roughly as tall as me. I notice his 'wings' are bleeding heavily, as flesh simply falls from them, the wounds gaping and glowing with a peircing red glow.

"This world is mine now! None of you will ever stop me!" he roars, turning and pointing to the sky with the blade. "Not even the Lady of a Thousand Spells!"

Distantly, my father screams as the sword extends. The distant rune flares to the north flicker out and die. The blade retracts, and a young woman is impaled on it through the heart. "Surrender. Or I shall continue to slay your gods one by one!

[Switch to Hattori]

Caldia is clinically dead, but not beyond saving. All you need to do is have her blood bypass her heart and keep it cycling through her system.

You can do this, Hattori! Don't believe in yourself, believe in we who believe in you! Go beyond the impossible and kick reality to the curb! That's the Team Legion/Delarosa way!

"Enough, Raeve. I'm done."
"?"
"I'm done watching you hurt and kill my friends and threaten this world of mine. I'm done being weak little Rosie who everyone needs to protect. I'm done being incompetent and worthless. It's time I showed the world just what I can do!"

!VIGOR!

I feel my senses speed.

"Ante. Pact."
"Yes ma'am!"

I feel flames lick my body, the armor from the spear holding against my own white flame.

He tries to attack me with the sword, and I move out of the way, and catch it in one hand.

"It's over, Raeve." I say quietly. "You've lost."

"Nay! I shall not be defeated by one such as you! I won't, I can't be defeated with every thing right in front of me!"

And then a blast of power forces him to his knees, and the Incarnate, much younger than I recall him, steps into view.
"Enough, Raeve! Bow before your creator!"

There's a long pause, with Raeve on one knee, his horns cracked and bleeding. He rises his head up, and I can see the sheer might of the Incarnate pushing it down.

"Fat-"

"DO NOT CALL ME THAT!" he roars, and the power doubles, forcing Raeve to one hand, and still, he does not bow. "You are no son of mine. You have been trying to kill my sons."

"Wha-"

"These people. These gods. This world. It is all my creation. I love it as a father would his first born boy or girl. Even these demons, in their own way, are beloved by me. But not you. Never you, never again. I trusted you, and this is what you have done! You have ruined everything! In order to restore the world, I'm going to need a soulstone of equal power to replace the one you carelessly siphoned power from!"

"..."

"But I cannot kill you. Lucifer's protection is far too grand."

"But... But I am not a demon! I shall leave no stone!"

"You are a demon, Raeve. You have been since I sent you there."

The power wanes, but Raeve bows, his hands curling to fists at the realization.

"I... I am no demon. I am Law. I am Order! I am NOTHING LIKE THEM!"

The sword, within an instant, beheads the Incarnate, and Raeve stands again.

"Fine. Fine! If I cannot be an angel, then... then I shall plunge this... this world into chaos... and rule it as the true demon lord, Sai'tan!"

"Just shut up." I growl, and a lance of white, pure fire lances towards him. He glowers, and catches it in his hand.

Until bands of blue forc slam him to the earth, and a handsome man and a beautiful woman land beside me.

"Are you in there, Legion?" the woman asks. "No matter. Hold this, dear."

Surprised, I take hold of the ball.

The orb cracks, splinters, and turns to bright light, a million, no, a trillion points of light dispersing into the air, blinding Raeve, then....

Funneling into me, filling me with surging power.

I grip the last tiny shard of the sphere.
[Wow. They really... Wow.]

Then I toss it over my shoulder, and without a single heed, rush forth.

Me and Raeve dance for what feels like hours. Blow after blow traded, high, low, high, middle lowhighmiddlesidecenterAAGH!

I grip the blade that was rammed through my belly.

[ We got this. ]

I slam the point of my spear into Raeve's hear, and the power leaves me...

And white light begins to radiate from every wound, every crack, every opening on Raeve's body.

"Legion... This is your doing! I curse you, Legion! I CURSE YOU! YOU... THIS MULTIVERSE WILL DIE EVENTUALLY, THIS WORLD... BUT YOU NEVER WILL! YOU SHALL WANDER THE BLANKNESS THAT IS THE SPACE BETWEEN SPACES, FINDING PLACES TO REST BUT NEVER A HOME! THIS... THIS I CURSE YOU WITH!"

You feel deeply unsettled.

Raeve explodes.

Finding a way for Ella and Hattori to be together once she dies would be a plus. Same for Jai, Ysl, and Antares.

Oh. Oh, shit, yer right.

"OI!" I call, turning around. "The girl's in danger!"

Hattori looks up from his ministrations and throws a hand over his shoulder, then resumes his work.

I run over to Rosie, only to be beaten by both Ensurian and J. Hah. They arrived at the same time. Adorable. They're helping her up... and she's okay.

Tyka leans down and picks up the tiny remaining shard, placing it in a pocket. Nicely done, folks. You saved our asses.

Again.

>Any idea where the Throne of the Last Prince is?
Gone. The world isn't in danger anymore, so it's gone. The sword vanished exactly when Raeve died, so... yeah. Wait... Who...

Well, huh. After the Seducers and the Unholy comes the Dead. I'll be da-good lord what is that.

Even as I watch, the woman ascends into the sky, then becomes a pillar of light... and vanishes quietly.

Hattori sighs in relief as the Rune Goddess coughs and sputters, then breaths again. He stands up and smiles.

"Ya done good, doc."
"So they say."
"What now? I'm sure you heard that curse. Legion isn't gonna be with us for long."
"Hold Legion in hell. There the power of the curse should be lessened. We'll find a way to get him out of it."
"And if we can't?"
"We'll let him know just what he did for us. And we give him a right proper sendoff."

...

Well? Up here or down there, folks? You'll last longer down there. And I got your list here. I don't think we'll be able to make you a body, though. Counts as... a home, you know.

Honestly? Without the incarnate I don't hold out much hope. If somebody figures out how then you can let Raeve loose again or something so we'll be called back, but I'm not going to waste what time we have left hiding away from the reasons we want to stick around.
Actually, give Flora a body, the ability to find her way back to you guys, and a way to find us. Or a way she can talk to us no matter where we might be.

Who do you want to see before you go?

J and Rosie and Danny are talking. J nods. Danny nods. Danny leaves, quietly, and J hugs Rosie tightly.

"Yorick." Ensurian says, suddenly beside me. "I'd like... I'd like to resume my old position, if I could."

"Chronicler?"
"Mmm. Yep."
"Hm. You certain?"
"Of course I am."
"...But what about her?"
There's a long pause.
"I'll... Only be in the way."
"I thought you..."
"Yes. I do. Very much so. My heart and soul weep that this is what she chose. But... she will be happy. So they are happy tears."
"...I see."
He nods.
"Someone has to keep track of it all."
"Yes. Someone does."
"And someday... I'll hear her story. And maybe... Maybe I'll be able to tell her mine again."
"That would be nice, wouldn't it?"

I don't think it will work out. Some relationships can work with a one-sided emotional connection if the physical attraction is shared and intense enough, and other relationships with a one-sided physical attraction or even no-sided physical attraction works if the emotional connection is shared... but here you have a one-sided emotional and physical connection, coming from different directions. Just doesn't seem stable.

>think he deserves a second chance?

It's the family motto that everyone does. I smile and lay my hand on his head.
He looks up at me.
"You did not know how to approach me, and the timing was such that no other option was really available. Now you have plenty of time to court me as a normal person."
"Is that so?" he replies, and I nod.

Then he gently picks me up and smiles.
"I have always wanted to sweep a lady off her feet." he murmurs into my ear. "Now let me show you... the world in an hour."

What.

We fly over land and water, and he holds me close the whole time. He's warm, and... smells nice, despite having been in heavy battle moments ago. Suddenly, he leaps into the air, and lands on a...

Floating island?

He smiles.

"I... I didn't..."
"Of course you wouldn't know about this." he replies gently, letting me down. "Because of how it stays in the air, it can't be seen from below at all."

It's a small island, roughly the size of a small town, and utterly flat, covered in long, bright green grass that is very soft. I lay down in it happily, and Sanfas lays beside me.
"I have not shared this place with anyone since I found it in my visitations on this plane some ten years ago." he says quietly. "I come here to think and to relax."

It's so quiet and warm...

Fighting somebody tells you a lot about them, and so does sex. If you're going to consider him, you need to know how J responds to sex with him, and you having sex with him.

Oh, and you're going to want to talk to Achilles; you and J should seek his help in carrying each others children. Safron can wait.

"He basically said to make you feel good. J told me not to hurt you. So... Are you hurt? How do you feel?"
"I... I'm fine. And yes. I feel wonderful, Sanfas. I'm just worried J might feel hurt at us being alone."
"We aren't." he replies with a sigh. "You can come out now."
J, sitting on her spear like it was a horse, sidesaddle, rises over the side of the island. I notice her teeth have grown into fangs and she is trying her best to hide... some emotion, I cannot place it. I just know she isn't angry.

The day was hot and dry. Father and the other grown-ups were out, thinking that the girl and the older brother could watch one another.

They weren't exactly correct.

They began to play and roughhouse, at first laughing, but soon falling silent as the time went on, from playing and mock-fighting to a gradual escalation of nonlethal violence. This was normal for them, in fact, Ysl encouraged it, for in goblin culture they felt that bones could mend, scratches heal, but the experiance and strength of such things were invaluable. This particular fight went too far, and in the heat of the moment, Fuego used his fire breath, lighting the roof ablaze. At first they fretted over what to do, but Fuego quickly got things under control, directing his sister to save what they could whilst he worked to slow the fire.

However, he could not hold it long enough to save the house, and Antares came home to find it burned to the ground, all the valuables unscathed but outside. After calming the children, Ysl scolded both of them harshly, and they went to live with Grandfather for a short while.

She noticed the swords I made with my elemental power to be... lacking, in several ways, so I've been learning to use a forge. I need weapons to be specially made for me, or else they're too small or too thin or something like that.

"Asala..."
"What is it."
So cold...
"I'm sorry."

I'm not sure how to take the news of this curse. It's like... It's like I've heard one of my best freinds is dying. Or...

...

A friend of mine, my second in command, Yoshi, once told me about his previous life. He was a great and noble warrior without par, an orc. He was utterly unstoppable, and he and his wife claimed a great deal of land for his tribe and people to hunt upon and live on. He swore to always gaurd her, and she, him. That was the closest thing an Orc has to true marriage as humans know it.

Then one day, she came down with a great, unstoppable illness. For weeks, he tried to find a cure, but was sadly unsuccessful.

He told me the despair killed him soon after his wife passed away in his arms. To be stronger than anything in the world... and be defeated by something you cannot even fight.

That is what I feel now.
That same despair.

Yes, and just as we found a partner, too.

We're trying to set things up so she'll be able to track us down, so hopefully we won't be completely out of contact. Ask Rosie about Flora.

We're not going to give up, we're going to take back control of our existence. Probably by tracking down the last shreds of Raeve and doing to him what normal demons do to soulstones.

A long time ago, before the town of Rivermeet was born, there was a tribe of folk that lived off the land, and other tribes. Thier tools and ways of war were simple. We had blades of metal, armor wood and bits of metal, and the fury in out heads, and that was all that was needed.

Battle was unending. If we were not fighting, we prepared for a fight. If we were not preparing for a fight, we were making children to fight in case we died and grew old. The women fought. The men fought. The children set traps.

It was naught but a glorious age of war. But then I was struck down. A blade in my back. My body, from my chest down, was no longer my own. I was taken home and tended to. But I never saw battle again.

My hands were brutish and clumsy, and I could not draft traps. My body was heavy and unweildy, and I could not make homes. Clearly I chould not do battle, either.

Those who were useless went unfed, but did not go without water.

So I sat in my hut and drank and listened to the sounds of battle as my body withered away before me. I watched as my legs became nothing but bones and skin, my body, once wonderful and vied for, ruined by the ravages of starvation and atrophy.

I died alone, while a combat raged, angry, but impotent.

It's... It's alright. The best laid plans... Ah well. I'm afraid you cannot swear to me, nor can I join you... but hearing from you directly now... It is a comfort all its own. I know that the curse you carry is in truth a blessing to all the worlds around us. After all, without your help, who knows how many worlds will vanish?

Maybe Raeve was trying to do one final act of kindness, twisted as it was. Maybe it was pure malice. Or perhaps he was so insane he didn't know the difference.

Oh well. Raven is dead. Salliane is back again. It feels so odd to be mortal again...

"Are you alright, Raven?" Hattori asks, kneeling beside me.
"I'll live." I reply, sitting up. "How is Caldia?"
"Lucky. The sword did not penetrate her as precisely as it did you. There's some hope I might restore it to her. The special balms I prepared are working... for the moment."

The girl on the bed beside me, covered in runes, murmurs.

"She... will live, either way. But her godhood is another matter."

"Antares must be-"

"My son is stronger than to be overcome with emotion now. He's rebuilding the North Quarter that the Seducers managed to get at."

"Mm. I remember when he was naught but young emotion and firey blood."

"Aye." Erhgal says as he walks into the room, sitting on my bed. "I'd know best. We'll miss you up there, Raven."

"Sally. Call me Sally." I say to the gathered gods. They're all so sad... Even the young goddess of the forests...

I never knew how many people... how many beings I'd affected.

Tell them that if Cali doesn't keep her godhood, they should select Antares.
Ysl and Jai would be sworn to him by default, and she could swear to him as well.

Ella should swear to Hattori, obviously. If these are our last days here, then we're going to spend all our favors on making the world a better place.

You know the worst thing about this curse? We have to spend our free time in the between, so we can't drop in and visit.
Actually, that's really the only problem we have with it. If we could go where we wanted when off-duty it would basically be our ideal 'retirement job'.

I think the problem is that you're both fighters, but there's nothing to fight. You're both edgy from lack of stimulation and pent-up aggression, and you're taking it out on each other.

Do more sparring. Actually, try combining fighting with sex; sort of a consensual violent rape. Or take-up BDSM in general.

What you are going through is actually very common, and is a form of mid-life crisis. Normally, people do stupid things, fuck-up their lives, and feel like idiots for years afterward. If they didn't fuck-up too badly, then they usually settle back down into their lives and things work out ok.

Shi, of course. The woman is old, but she runs the black market, the theives guild, and the pirates from here in Rivermeet. Hattori may have given her a second chance, but I'm not that strong. I only restraind myself for his sake. I'm sorry if you don't like it, but that's simply the way I feel.

Honestly, you need to learn to let things go. It's been decades; everybody else has moved on already. You don't have to like her, but you shouldn't carry grudges so long, and you certainly shouldn't project those feelings onto others.

Remember, the Delarosa line was renowned as assassins up until Hattori made a name for himself. You were willing to overlook his family, so don't be so bitter as to hold your daughter-in-law and grand daughter in contempt.

First? Calm down. She came around asking for Hattori, which means she wanted to run her plan by him first.
Second? Hear her out; we would like to know what she's plotting.

Besides that, there's a difference between extending life and denying death; some people have more to do in their lives than they have years. A natural death after a life well-spent is what Hattori got, but that's a luxury for the scant few.
With the proper rules and limits this could be a good thing; we'll talk to Hattori about it once she has said her piece. Heck, for all we know her plan was to sell it to him.

W-well, he's quite kind and gentle. He reminds me of Johnathan Towers, which is ironic, I suppose, but...

Achilles cracks his knuckles. "Before we begin, I shall contact Flora directly to hear her wishes for this body."

A band of white encircles Rosie's head, and he nods. "Very well."
He snaps his fingers, and with a crack, snaps the drone's neck. Then, he begins the harvest, the entire body turning into a gray smoke which coalesces into a large orb in his hand. Closing his eyes, his body reverts to the pale-skinned body he had before, with the small wings. And then he constructs.
He doesn't work from the bone up, but from the head down, the flesh sliding into place like a tapestry weaving itself. The face is exactly like you remember, gentle, pupiless eyes staring out of a face of blackest night, lips sewn loosely shut. The weaving slows at the chest, and Achilles seems to smile, weaving a white sundress out of the extra organic material, it seems, until he reaches her feet, laying her gently upon the grass.

"And now for the final part."

A tear streaks down Rosie's cheek.
"Goodbye." she whispers.

And then an orb of darkness, not foreboding darkness that lurks in the corners, but the gentle darkness under your blankets, slides from her head, and down into the body, which gasps with life.

It rises, looking at its own hands, running her fingers through soft ebony hair.

We do have quite the collection of good-natured perverts in here. And we like you, y'know. I think that stuff we were doing wasn't entirely intended to be as intense as it was though. It's not 'me' doing it so I'm not really at liberty to say, but I think we're trying to get a firm enough host-link with you so that we can send and receive messages across the Between.

This is a mechanics change. The Soul-Sacrifice system is being replaced by a karma system:
Karma builds slowly (160 points worth of karma since the beginning of Hatquest) and can only be used to influence dice. When used, all Karma is consumed.
The next two rolls are 60/100 and 99/100. We are allowed to combine them into one roll of 159/100. Applying our Karma to it brings the to-hit number down to -1/100.
So, yes, we are doing this.

Probably. Consider that a universe is so vast that sending light from one end to another can take a...

... a very very long time, and that the spaces Between worlds can be even larger... Well, your messages will be faster than light, being psionic in nature, but there will be a rather long delay unless we rest within the same world. Something on the order of a day one way, probably. I'm not...

rolled 71 = 71

People begin to gather. Trik, Tyka, Ysl... Hattori, Ella, Father... Sister, Brother, Auntie... Harumda, Asala, Yorick...
So many people. Dozens upon dozens. I cannot name all of them. The gods, the leaders, random people who have heard of your deeds. It's incredible. Hattori steps forth, and speaks.

"We know you are not long for this world, Legion." he says quietly. "Throughout the years, the decades... the centuries, you have guided us to victory, to friends... And even..." he holds out his hand to Ella, and briefly I see a symbol on the back of her hand, "To love. There is no amount of words that can fully express exactly what we feel. So I had some friends of mine whip something up. We hope you like it."

He snaps his fingers, and an illusion fades... Oh, Legion, I wish you could see.

A statue, but not really a statue... a memorial, hundreds upon thousands upon millions of stones, spheres, in a great, amourpous column, rise to the skies.

"None of us can truly take full credit for our success." Father says, stepping forth. "We were heroes because we were driven forth, because we were motivated, because we were advised by you. Without you, we would be nothing. This world... would be nothing, without you."
My sister steps forth.
"It... It was fun while it lasted, right? Everyone else has already said what I wanted to say. Story of my life... Wherever you end up, Legion... I hope it's a break from us. If there's anything you deserve, it's to relax."

And then... Harumda?

"It's been a long time. You were a gift. A gift from a creature that thought itself a great and noble thing, a savior. He thought he could save the world from chaos, from evil, from death and war...
He was right. By making you, he's saved countless lives, through you. I'm not excusing him... I'm amazed that a construct of one as vile as him was able to mete out so much good. I'm impressed by your valour, Legion. And so, as a demon, I shall grant you something that a demon can only once. If you are in need, at any time, in any place, simply speak my name thrice. No barrier shall cease me, no distance shall ever stand between us, I shall be there, in an instant! It is the least I can do for one as great and noble as you."

I'm going to miss you, Legion.

Have you any last things to say before you leave?

"We've been to many places, helped many people... and made a few mistakes along the way too. Through that we have been consistently impressed with the courage and strength of those we have guided, and that of their friends. We're proud of all of you. If you weren't so damn likeable we might not have tried so hard to help! Still, this world's story is not over. There will be trouble in the future; it is inevitable. Remain vigilant. Stay strong. Be ready when the time comes to defend your realm. Most importantly, collect the artifacts of the End of Days when they appear! Don't let them fall into the enemy's hands! Sacrifice anything to attain them, as everything you give up can be recovered by the one who becomes the Gigas.

But uh... don't turn evil or anything."

"We're all going to miss you, Legion. But I know that there's some world out there that needs you."

He reaches past me, and grips the air itself, tearing a hole in reality.

"Goodbye, Legion. May a thousand worlds be cured by your words."
