Silent.
The world is strangely silent.
You can hear the wind rushing past your face, but it says nothing.
You feel disoriented; your head throbs, and you can feel the blood being pulled away from your veins. All you can see is blue, and shades of white.
I failed, you think, over and over, though you can't remember who you failed, or why. It may have something to do with your current predicament, though.

Can maybe still use the elemental/every spirit symbol trap, and then make the trap release each specific element without anything else?

there has to be another symbol for spirits somewhere. maybe someone else has the info somewhere?

Or if that doesn't work, how about a barrier against individual elements around the all-element trap so they don't get pulled in in the first place?

"Would it be possible to alter it to exclude specific kinds of spirits?
These are symbols for each of the four elements, but seem to also be symbolic of the elementals themselves. So what would happen if you set the trap to catch spirits of all elements, except for the elementals themselves?

Could you create a weak attractor to test the idea?"

"Would it be possible to alter it to exclude specific kinds of spirits?
These are symbols for each of the four elements, but seem to also be symbolic of the elementals themselves. So what would happen if you set the trap to catch spirits of all elements, except for the elementals themselves?"

"the problem with that is that i dont KNOW any symbols that mean elementals alone. if you take the symbols by themselves they dont mean 'elemental' they just mean 'air' 'water' 'earth' 'fire' watch" he draws a symbol for 'earth' in the ashes, and then starts chanting something. When he finishes, something has separated from the ashes, but the Gnome does not seem to be effected.

"How about a barrier against individual elements around the all-element trap so they don't get pulled in in the first place?"

"if i set a barrier for spirits of a certain type itll repel spirits composed of even a slight hint of that element, making the trap useless"

"Can we maybe still use the elemental/every spirit symbol trap, and then make the trap release each specific element without anything else?"

"that would take twice as much energy AND we would need an 'only' modifier, which there are hundreds of, each one extremely specific, but i dont know one for 'elementals only'"

"There has to be another symbol for spirits somewhere. Maybe someone else has the info somewhere?"

"probably. honestly, im more of a [weaving][wizard] anyway"

hmm, well then. stay in this town a little to make sure you are fully healed and stuff, and finish up that neat rock sword. and maybe get another lesson from siisa and then we can try the next closest town.

"Hmm... Without more information the only working options would take too much power, like making the walls block spirits from entering and putting a trap with no attractor at the entrances, or potentially be unreliable, like excluding spirits that are only a single element."

As you mull over the possibilities you find your 3/4 finished ROCK SWORD in the ashes! Hooray!

Some more earth-crawlers are approaching the burned building. Uluaris mutters something under his breath, then gets up to greet them.

"[Good morning],[human word]"

"Uluaris." Replies the older human.

"[human words][you to this][human words][today]?"

"[You][human words][we are][human words][it]."

"[No]."

"[This is not a][human word]Uluaris.[You will][human words][of it by][human words][or you will][human words].[Am I][human word]?"

"...[Yes][human word]." Uluaris looks irritated as they turn to walk away. He kicks at the ashes.

I pick up the Undine and the Gnome and start walking away. Suddenly I hear a booming sound like when there's a storm with flashing lightning, and then i feel like i need to get back there but no I keep walking even though the elementals are trying to get there too I hold on to them and now we're back at Uluaris' [house]. I go upstairs to check on Siisa. She's still twitching, foaming, and glowing. I sit down next to her for a while.

Some time later, I hear a door open and slam shut. Soon after, I hear Siisa's voice start to say "Well it's about TIME you--" then cut off into otherworldly screams. I cover my ears.

"What happened?" I ask quietly.

"t-took a s-soul" it cries.

"W-women and children t-too. B-but it's not like its BAD t-they LIKE being part of m-meee" it breaks off into sobs. I recall what it looked like in the Blue, it's not Siisa, I tell myself.

"You won't get sympathy from me; this wouldn't have happened to you if you didn't eat earth-crawlers." I tell it sternly.

"N-not just humans s-spirits are REALLY t-tasty." Okay that is just sick and wrong.

Still, I want information, so I try to keep from looking like I'm about to end it's existence, which is what I feel like doing. "So, why do you look like Siisa?"

"If that's true, then why don't you just collect the souls from people who are already dying?
Then they would be happy after death, and since you wouldn't be killing anybody you wouldn't have people hunting you down for it.

"The problem is no one wants to give up their souls, even though they're like, a hundred times happier when they do! Besides, the [wizards] would chase me anyway; all they want to do is make the souls work, which is just wrong! I think the world would be a better place if we were all together, don't you?" Okay, either it just ignored my argument or it's trying to twist my words to get me to agree with it...

As I turn the pages, I see what I know to be the symbol for "spirits" next to a picture of something that looks vaguely like the Soul-Thief's true form. Then there's a picture of a tree and some flowers, and a symbol next to that. After that is a few drawings of different circles with those sharp edged black squiggles next to them. Then it goes to body parts; followed by colors; and ends with a series of black squiggles next to colorful symbols.

The afternoon passes far too slowly. I stay away from the windows, but there's very little to do besides ignoring the Thief. I look at the [books], but I don't understand any of them; I look at the [masks] on the wall, but I don't know what they do; I consider tasting some of the good smelling things on the shelves, but they might be poison so I decide against it. It's a losing battle against boredom.

I never had this problem on the Skyway; just being around Sol kept me happy.

After an eternity, night falls, and Uluaris emerges from his room. "Zeph, go wake up Siisa." he says, and I do it even though he was rude about it because I'm so BORED.

I gently nudge Siisa awake, it seems she managed to fall asleep. Her eyes look strange, but at least she's got her color back. She looks surprised to see me, and then I remember what I look like and explain who I am. She's tired, but she picks up on it quickly.

We go downstairs, to find Uluaris gone and the Thief out of the circle. What should I do?!

...out of the circle how? standing right outside it or gone? if gone then Uluaris probably took it with him. he knows enough about them that he should be safe.

Could be some kind of trick or something, by either of them. Don't panic and see what Siisas reaction is to this, if she's freaked out then hurry both of yourselves outside. Otherwise just stay calm. Remember Uluaris probably knows what he's doing. Probably.

It's just standing outside of the circle. Suddenly, it lunges at Siisa!

Siisa, surprisingly, returns the hug. Seeing my bewildered expression, she points to the Thief's arm "is safe for now"

"...I see. Does this happen often?"

"yes"

We wait like that for a bit, and then I ask, "Uluaris said I'm not a person. Do you know why?"

"you dont have [human word] but I think that's okay, i like you anyway."

I don't know if I have a soul, I've never thought about it before. Soul Thief seems to think I do, though.
"What is [human word]? Can you describe it? Or draw its symbol for me?
I would also like to see the symbol for 'person' as well."
Siisa tries to explain, but finally gives up, saying "i dont know words!"
Instead, she draws it for me. She draws the Eyes, and then points to them and says the [human word]. I don't get it, I DO have eyes. Just not freaky beast eyes. And it doesn't LOOK like the earth crawlers have those freaky eyes, either.
Next, she draws the pentagonal shape I saw in the book, points to it, and says "[Person]"
"Soul thief, I want to find something that would convince you to give Siisa back her soul, but Uluaris' soul is not an option."
"Mhm?" It inquires, draping itself over Siisa. Before I have a chance to explain my plan, I hear a clop clop clop sound outside. I want to go see what it is, but Uluaris said stay away from the windows...
Luckily, I don't have to wonder for long, as Uluaris flings open the door and beckons to us. As soon as I step outside I see that there's a cart with a strange creature in front of it. Uluaris grabs my arm and pushes me into the back of the cart, then covers me with heavy blankets. "dont move" he says.
Sigh. More waiting. At least I have Undine and Gnome with me.
[Siisa vision:
I knew as soon as I saw Thief out of his cage that we were going on a trip, how exciting! I guess Uluaris is going to sell the golem he made? (I could tell he was making one 'cause Thief was screaming, but I didn't think it would look like Zeph!)
I go up and say hi to Mister Horse. I like horses a lot.]
You may now give commands to either Siisa or Zeph

@Siisa: We need to think of a way to describe the eyes. If we think about it, there must be a way to do it!
Oh, also, why not ask Uluaris to not try to force Zeph to do things? She's been very nice so far, it doesn't work, and trying upsets her.

@Zeph: How about you ask the Gnome to start working on a hat for Siisa? She's the only one you've met who thinks you're a person, so she deserves a gift.
Also, once you have the basic hat shape down you can have her improve it to learn spirit magic!
I think a shape like this would be best:

[Siisa vision:
Um... This is really hard to think of! There's no word for "death" in Spirit talk, so I don't know how to explain it!
"Uluaris, how do you explain death to a spirit?"
"The problem isn't that spirits don't die; they can be killed; the problem is that they don't really understand what that entails. Most spirits are pretty interchangable, so when one of them dies they just find a replacement. Don't be fooled into thinking they're like us, that's how they take advantage of you. In any case, the closest words they have to "die" is [vanish] or [go away]."
Uluaris is sooo smart. I hope I can be a great wizard like him someday!]
Hm, a present, huh? I tell Gnome to get to work on it. "okay i will"

I'm out of magic?!
This sucks.

@Siisa: Well, then why not tell her it means [end/cessation of life], and that all humans will grow weak and die even if nothing ever hurts them? Then tell her what Uluaris said about why she's not people.
It's silly though; she's not really dumb like some spirits, and she's not fixated on something like the soul eater. She's smart and friendly and helpful and admits mistakes and knows right from wrong and wants to teach and learn! She's more of a person than some of the human beings you've met!
"Uluaris, would you please not try to force Zeph to do things? It doesn't work, and she doesn't like it, so could you please not do it?"

@Zeph: Have you been out of the sun too long? Oh, well. Might as well listen to what Uluaris and Siisa are saying and try to piece together more of their language by extrapolating words you don't know from the context.

[Siisa vision:

I don't know all those big words! Still, when Uluaris tells Zeph she can come out, I try to explain it again using the words he used; [vanish] and [go away]. And then I tell her about how humans age and get weak over time. I think she gets it! :D]

So the Eyes mean go get killed? Now I'm really confused. And why do humans get hurt even when nothing's hurting them? It just doesn't make sense to me.

[Siisa vision:

We sit in silence for a while, and then I have a question for Uluaris! "Why do you always try to order Zeph around? It doesn't seem to be working , after all. I think she'd like it better if you didn't"

"I think I'm getting closer to figuring out how to command it. As for the why; you always want to be able to control spirits, even if they seem friendly. They're unpredictable and liable to do you harm if you let them do as they please. So it can not be happy all it likes, as long as it does what I say."

I still think he should try to be nice to spirits, but I'm sure he has his reasons.]

Lune is pretty too. Not as nice as Sol, of course, but not hideous as I'd imagined her.

I try to listen to the conversation, but they're using too many strange words!'

The copy is sitting next to me. It's rather unnerving to be beside yourself, but it isn't doing anything at all, it hardly even blinks.

"Zeph, tell me what name is?"]

Is she asking what my name means? It's hard to tell, but I think so. The problem is, I can't say the whole thing when talking about myself anymore... I guess I'll just tell part of it.

"West Wind"

[Siisa vision:

Okay, she said something about a direction, and then "Moving air" I think. "Is there a name you would like?"]

My old one. But I don't say anything. It's too depressing a thought to articulate.

[Siisa vision

I don't think she does have one she wants. Which means I get to make one up!]

I guess I should ask Uluaris to clarify what Siisa meant... "So, Siisa tried to tell me what [mortality] means, but 'seeking to be killed' doesn't seem quite right. Also, what is this about earth-crawlers suffering with no apparent cause?"

"she doesnt have the language down very well yet. Anyway let me put this in very simple terms for you: [entropy/mortality] is the opposite of everything precious on this world; it is endings, partings, and separations. And having it is what distinguishes [people] from [spirits], so dont try pulling that 'im a person too' scheme on me again. I dont care if you think you are, youre just not."

Favona sounds nice. We can go with that.

After Zeph says something complicated, Uluaris is quiet for a while. It's hard for others to tell with him, but I can see that he's sad. I wonder what he's thinking about?

"...'Adrift from time, a world without end; how lonely that would be...'"

He says weird things like that sometimes.]

Eh?

This is getting too sad. We need to be in a good mood when we get to town!
