Actually asking the merfolk sounds like a great idea. I'm sure they'd be more then willing, it's not like Mimi is evil or anything.

Buy thing, then check the missions. Gotcha.

Artemis heads off to the shopping district. As he enters a alleyway he hears someone talk to him.

"Excuse me sir, can you spare some change?"

Artemis turns around to see a man with two long swords coming out of each of his wrists, attached there by some sort of bandage.

"Uhm... Sure I guess."

"Hahaha you're the first one to say yes, I'm at a loss here."

He walks over to Artemis.

"You see most people just brush by and so 'No' and then I usually reply 'Well how about I take your organs instead, those can fetch a high price'. But you didn't say no, you actually agreed to give me change. So now I -can't- use my usual 'I'm gonna kill you line'. I'm really at a loss here."

He flexes a bit letting the blades shine in the dim light of the alley. Artemis notices they're rusted and covered in dried blood.

"Thank you for the charity but... I think I'm going to kill you anyway. Nothing personal."

Say "Ah, sure, just let me leave a note here and I'll be right with you."

Then give Mimi a note saying she can eat this guy's soul.
Yea, don't argue on this. He's an unrepentant murderer that deserves worse.

Your goal is going to be getting your bag over his head. Start with gravity and icing his hands, but assume magic isn't going to work on him so he can't catch you off guard if it fails.

Well, you're a knight. He's boldly claimed to be a serial murderer. You have a distinctly obvious duty here- to take him down, hard, by whatever means are available.

Official protocol may dictate that you inform him that he's summarily sentenced to death for assaulting a knight prior to using lethal force, but I'm a little fuzzy on the details- you probably know better how to make this legal.

I'll try to arrest him but if push comes to shove I must take him down..

I probably can't move his blades since he's holding them so....

Artemis uses Minor Psionics on a coin and flings it at the man third eye. He flinches and in that moment Artemis pulls out his staff and casts Fire on him.
The man dodges and the spell grazes his shoulder.
He rushes at Artemis and swings his blade. Artemis barely has enough time to react but manages to block the blade with his staff.

Of course he's fast. There are very few slow twin-blade styles.
Cast gravity on him to increase his weight. That will slow him down.

Fire on his hands, if you can manage it.

'Fate worse than death', you say? Do you know what happens when people die? Everything you were, are, and ever could be is erased from existence. It's a fate exactly equal to death because they both have the exact same consequences as far as that person is concerned.
Souls are like cafeteria plate; they are used and scoured clean so that the use leaves no signs, and if you break a plate the cafeteria just gets a new one.

Artemis struggles to pull back his staff. The man pulls back his other blade and strikes again.
Right before the blade connects with Artemis's neck a sudden blast forces the man back. Black tendrils erupt around Artemis and circle him, creating a protective field.

Ok, now keep the gravity up while you make him drag himself to the castle. Walk far enough behind him that he can't surprise you, and if he tries to fight or escape then burn his hands off and have Mimi devour his soul.

Well as long as you're feeling confident you might as well use it, force him to walk the guards to turn himself in and threaten to use lethal force if he resists or tries to run. Normally you'd want to disarm and shackle them but... yeah.

I think he's implying that the shadow dragon is living in your hair or something. Dunno about that but there is something here that isn't you or us and has shadow element powers. But don't worry about any of that right now because as tough as you think you are he's still liable to gut you. Do not drop your guard!

Artemis buys a few books for Mimi then makes his way back to the castle.
He checks the Mission Board.

Hmm... there are quite a few available now that I can assemble my own team. It seems that each of the 4 groups have their own missions.

The Church of Cheront does mostly Rescue/Healing missions. They travel the world and lend their services to others. Taking on their missions means I'll usually get a adept healer automatically placed on my team but the pay is really low for these missions.
The Knights have their own official missions. I need to assemble my own team for these. The missions can range from local orders to keeping the peace in other areas. the pay is average and includes expenses.

The Procuration Coalition.... Yeah these seem to be rather... Illegal? 'Take care of this person', 'Uncover info on this guy'. The pay is simply amazing though but it doesn't include expenses and I might be fired/sent to prison for most of them...

The Academy also has a few missions mostly involving Ingredient Retrieval or Protection. They pay is good but doesn't cover expenses. Also the mage who assigned the job will usually insist on joining so that takes away my Mage slot.

Ok, Art, we need to go to Mimi RIGHT NOW to make a deposit.

>>283757
The first mission needs to be a shakedown run, so go for a fairly simple rescue mission. See if you can get them to provide Kacey so you can have a Saisai/Kacey/Sonata team.
>>
No. 283782 ID: 40cb26

Check on what the Academy is offering, as that sounds the most interesting and profitable angle. Plus a fair chance to see a familiar name as the mission poster. Then check out the knights missions.

And how should we refer to you, little tag along? We are going to be spending a lot of time together after all. You might want to consider opening up about what you are and your intents, we may be willing to help you so long as you do well by us in turn. And besides it will keep us from making wild annoying assumptions endlessly.

Oh my... That.... That's terrible Guardian... I don't think Mimi will do that though..

Anyway lessee.... Okay for the Knights there are a few missions.
One is defending the border against the tigerfolk, it seems they've been creeping in more. The pay is G1000 plus expenses.
Another is.... Protecting a member of the Erdet family. It seems the heir wishes to explore the outside of the kingdom. The pay is.... G1200.
Another is an easy one, patrol. I can probably accomplish this on my own and the pay is a meager G500.
Deliver a message to the Dark Elves. The pay is G1000.
Deliever a message to the Light Elves. The pay is G200,000. Woah, that's.... That's a lot.
Deliver goods to the fairies, pay is G1200.
That seems to be it for now

Find out if the "Deliver message to the Light Elves" and "Deliver message to the Dark Elves" ones are related.

I'd say go for Dark Elf messaging and Fairy delivery. Those are both fairly low risk, and we can chain courier missions together pretty easily.

I'm not real keen on guard duty or patrol, it gives us either a combat or boredom. Not that we can't deal with either but we should work on leading a group first then getting into coordinated combat. Light elves mission must be high risk indeed for that kind of reward. Now the dark elves that sounds safer and more interesting. We haven't met them yet and it could be rewarding in other ways. I believe they are proficient at soul magics certainly even a small amount of knowledge of that could be valuable. It's a good mission to bring Sonata or Sarah with for their insights, and we implied we would take the former along already. And with her, again, a less combat focused mission is a better idea.

But let's check out the Academy list before deciding on anything.

The voice we mentioned is something we have noticed making comments ever since you took that little break from living. You can't hear it and we wouldn't notice it without paying careful attention. It seems to be some being that has hitching a ride with you since before we came along. It was responsible for the dark shield power earlier. It seems to need you alive for it's own well being. Beyond that we can only conjecture, but it seems reasonable to assume it's been there your whole life and is responsible for your unique hair colors. Having something to do with the shadow dragon is even more of a wild guess.

It seems harmless enough for now and we can't do much about it anyway so try not to worry about it. We should only mind to not rely on the power it granted us, as it's use has some unknown cost that isn't our GP or your mana.

Well these missions are from the Knights so the king would need to approve. Others are more of a Help Wanted ad then anything. Knight missions are generally more safe in that they're not a trap.

Anyway I can't take on two missions at once but I'm going to take down the Fairy Delivery flier, this is allowed only if you're certain you want the job. Now I have as much time as I need to get prepared.

And you were trying to talk with her last time so you must have known about her then." if he says something about her being in violation of the rules.
That gets YOUR ass out of the fire. Getting HER ass out of the fire would mean immediately taking her out of the castle. Probably leaving her with Morgan.

However, I expect that Regulus already knew about her. Assuming he's not one of her former masters, he's probably been using his rank to make Mimi dish out dirt on other knights who went through that room.
Don't hold it against him, it's his job.
Don't hold it against Mimi, he would get the contract between proper masters and it would likely be among the unpleasant things people made her do.

You can be sure he makes it his business to find out the secrets of every knight. This is part of his job, but there is the risk that he would try to use that information as leverage against the king.

Oh, and the way blackmail works is that they use a small secret to coerce you into doing things, and these things generally result in even worse secrets that they will then use to coerce you into even worse things.

Get a magic item that can record and playback conversations and attach it to us. If somebody ever tries to blackmail you then you can use that conversation to destroy them - yes, your secret will be secret no longer, but it's always worth it.

No we should not record this converstation as it could get us into trouble if we were caught. The way you are sounding makes it that we should be thinking like a paranoid crackpot. What we should do is just listen to what he has to say and then let him go.

Artemis listen to me erm I want to ask you if you could hug Mimi after the knight captain leaves the room. "Tell her that her secret is safe with you and the knight captain and then give her the books and then do whatever you need to do"

"Well yeah, but when it's one sided that is just obedience. Real trust is when the secrets are mutual. What I mean is you can count on me all the more, if you put your trust in me as well."

"Of course. So sir, how long have you known about her?"

"I just met her now."

He starts walking out of his room.

"Sir."

"Yes?"

"Real trust is when the secrets are mutual, if it's one sided then that's just obedience. You can count on me even moreso if you put your trust in me."

"True. But I don't think you've earned that just yet. Keep doing well Artemis. I'll see you at the top."

He opens the door.

"Good luck with your mission."

And leaves.

Man... I honestly can't read that guy.

We can't record this conversation anyway, but it'd be nice not having to bluff like that a second time.

>>284798
Don't worry about him. That's our job.
Ask Mimi how me got her chest open and what he asked her, then hug her and give her 75GP. You already put the books in her bag, so rather than giving those to her you can just ask her how long those books will keep her entertained.

Also, tell her that you're not in love with her, but you do care for her. It's going to go over like a lead balloon, but you're the one who decided to do it this way.

Close the door. Lock the door. Make a note to get better locks. Ideally unpickable indestructible magical locks.

Now go give Mimi a damn hug, you could have just lost her.

>Kill him.
Yes, well... can't say I disagree with the sentiment. But unless you can do it yourself somehow it will just have to wait. Until then we deal with the wicked however we can.

Go and comfort Mimi, tell her you'll never let him hurt your friends. Also, I'm rooting for Morgan, so don't listen to all those Mimifags. *Puts on a cap with Morgan's face on it and cheers*

Yeah... New locks is a must.
Anyway..

Artemis gives Mimi some points and knocks on her chest.

"Hey Mimi, what happened?"

He hears her muffled voice from within the chest.

"Sorry Master... He forced the chest open.. I don't know how he did it.."

"It's okay Mimi, you didn't do anything wrong. Hey... There's uhm... Something we need to talk about."

"What is it Master?"

"I.... Well I don't really..... Mimi I want us to just stay as friends okay? You're a dear friend but I can't be in a relationship right now."

"Oh, okay master."

Well. That didn't go so bad.

Well it seemed to over well enough, I suspect it just isn't that big of a deal for a demon. But even so it isn't like she's happy right now, so you pop open that box and give her a hug and comfort her.

After a little bit ask her what they were talking about. Then when you get all the info you can there ask her about some important issues. What she thinks would be a good idea for a new contract, would she want you to do if she couldn't be in the castle anymore, and what kind of demon would she want to be if not a mimic.

Then after all that give her another hug and grant her that 75 gp. If we understand how this works she should level up twice, and look a couple years older.

"No no I understand Master, I was just messing with you."

Artemis sighs.

>>285101
That's a lot of GP.. okay.

"!? M-master."

"Yes?"

Mimi opens the chest.

"I have boobs now.."

She examines her new body a bit.

"Uhm... Also I can store a lot more now and you can also open the bag more so I can hold bigger items. I can also change the shape of my chest but that's only an illusion."

"Hmm. Okay."

Ok look man, something is definitely wrong here. Don't just let it be. Go and stand next to her chest and put your hand on it.

"I don't think I'll sleep very well if I'm worried about what I've done and how it's troubling you..."

We don't want to pull out the fact that you're her master and she has to do what you say... but keep in mind we might have to.

Do you see those eyes, Art? She's very upset, and you aren't even noticing. She's doing a horrible job of trying to hide it, but you're taking her statements at face value because you have the social awareness of an ox. One that's oblivious even by ox standards. And dead.

Grab some blankets and spend the night in there. She'll enjoy the company.

YOU ARE A FLIPPING MORON!
SHE SAID THAT WITH TEARS IN HER EYES!
I OUTRIGHT TOLD YOU SHE WAS COVERING HER FEELINGS UP!

I can understand that you're dumb as a post when it comes to dealing with people, but there's NO excuse for making mistakes that we are ACTIVELY TELLING YOU HOW TO AVOID.
We're supposed to be helping you, but how are we supposed to do that when you refuse to LISTEN to us when we are DOING OUR JOB!

You hurt Mimi. You hurt her a lot, and you didn't care even after we told you.
Here, this should help you think over what you've done.

Artemis, we know you never got out much aren't you aren't that good at dealing with people. That's fine, we understand. But we aren't going to let you run roughshod over others peoples emotions if we can help it. You need to better understand what you're doing to others.

So... [Change Gender]

This isn't a punishment, we don't need you strong impulsive or even female. This is so that social inept male brain of your can process emotions better. Now get to sleep and let us pray you have your head and heart in the right places come morning.
