Not liking other quest. Started interesting, now it's just a pain. It has gone on hiatus. May finish it later. For now, I do this.

Marisa can speculate that, based on what the guard told her, she must wait for, 'a short while,' to see the mayor, though she cannot accurately define what the guard meant by, 'a short while,' without asking him.
Marisa decides to ask the guard to clarify the amount of time that he meant when he said, 'a short while.'
"… A brief period of time," the guard replies. Marisa bores holes through him with her blank gaze, unsatisfied with his answer and expecting more. He does not acknowledge her, and instead remains staring, stone-faced, straight ahead. The other guard looks on in concern.
Finally, the guard breaks from his facade under Marisa's scrutiny and shoots her an annoyed look.
"Ma'am, if you would please take a seat, I'm certain that Lady Dourdin will be ready to meet with you in just a few minutes."

Marisa decides that she can wait that long, so she unslings her satchel and takes a spot on the bench. The guards return their gazes forward.
A minute passes before Marisa realizes that she can hear what may be a voice or voices whispering behind the great oak doors, but she cannot be certain of what is being said. Marisa glances to either side of her and sees that the guards do not seem to notice this; that is, if they are not already ignoring it.

A few minutes pass, though, and one of the doors creaks open. It is only now that Marisa realizes the whispering behind the doors has ceased; despite how intently she listened, the voice or voices must have been so faint that she did not notice when they trailed off.
"Send in the next one," a woman announces through the crack in the doors. Marisa stands up and is ushered inside by the male guard, who, once they are both in the office, moves to stand vigil against a wall adorned with various maps and sea charts. Various trinkets, baubles and oddities decorate shelves. A globe sits in a corner, and a stand is set up with a book that is open to a page of what Marisa recognizes is printed in Runic. A massive shield of elaborate design is displayed high on the wall behind a desk piled with papers, at which a middle-aged avian settles into a padded chair and crosses her wings over her lap. As the woman looks her in the eye, Marisa can practically feel the woman's glare pierce into her head.
"I am Lady Aure Beatrice Dourdin of Lieusous Montagnes, Wife to the late Constante Finn Dourdin and Mother to Xavier and Brise Dourdin, elected as Mayor by the people of Lieusous Montagnes."
Her voice betrays her age, but it still holds a certain confidence.
"And… to whom do I owe the honor of speaking with?"

You are Marisa [lastname], runecaller and explorer.

You are here to relate an unfortunate story. A few days ago, you were exploring an underground ruin, and you happened across an injured Avian who introduced himself as Xavier Dourdin. A human ruffian had locked him up and broken his wing. You attempted to resolve the situation peacefully, but the human betrayed you, and tried to kill you both. Xavier, fueled by anger, gave his life killing the human. You would not be alive were it not for his sacrifice. You are sorry, and ashamed that you could not protect him. (which is true, even if protecting him wasn't actually your GOAL per-se.)

Wait, so you heard voices from within, but when the door opened no one came out? And they send a guard in with you? Clearly she's going to devour you body and soul. Or if she doesn't, you can introduce yourself as blahblahblah, but regret the circumstances of your meeting for you have to be the bearer of bad news, blahblahblah, your son died a hero, blahblahblah, by the way do you need any ruins explored or artifacts retrieved?

Since Marisa has no surname that she knows of, and since she would rather not identify herself as a citizen of the country that has recently subjugated the mayor's, Marisa introduces herself as Marisa, runecaller and explorer, and she says that she is standing before the mayor to relate an unfortunate story about the mayor's son, Xavier.
Marisa pauses to gauge Lady Dourdin's reaction, but the mayor's piercing expression betrays no change.
"I see you are not one for pleasantries, then. And for a moment I had hoped you were here to discuss with me the intricacies of the Runic language."
Lady Dourdin takes her eyes off of Marisa to let slip an exasperated sigh and sit up in her chair, before refocusing them back on Marisa.
"… Never mind that, though. Tell me; what has the boy done now?"
Marisa relates the long episode of Xavier's sacrifice to rescue her from the ruffian in the underground ruin she had been exploring earlier in the day. It is only now Marisa realizes that not even a single day has actually passed since the incident with Xavier and Amin; to her, it feels as though her escapades since this morning and up to now have taken up the better part of a year; about eight months, to be exact. In any case, Marisa is sure to communicate her sorrow for Lady Dourdin's loss, as well as the for the fact that Marisa could not protect Xavier.
The guard loses his composure for a moment, allowing surprise to break through onto his features, but he just as quickly reverts to his stone-faced stoicism, acting as though nothing had happened. Mayor Dourdin, however, does not show any surprise. Instead, she glares at Marisa as her brow furrows. She glares at Marisa for what approaches a relatively long while. She glares at Marisa long enough to make Marisa feel quite uncomfortable. The heavy rain pounding against the outside of the building is quite painfully noticeable as every drop breaks the great silence in the room.
Marisa begins thinking that she should do something when, quite suddenly, Lady Dourdin closes her eyes. She takes off her spectacles; a somewhat difficult task for her, given the fact that she must do so with a pair of wings, but she manages to set them down on her desk with a practiced poise. Lady Dourdin opens her eyes. If Lady Dourdin's eyes had glared hard enough to pierce into Marisa's head, then they are now directed at her with such an intensity that they pierce straight though Marisa and everything directly behind her.
"What is this? Is this some manner of joke?" Lady Dourdin remains quite calm, but there is a sort of underlying venom evident in her voice that indicates a sort of tranquil fury. "I shall have you know; it is directly against Rothan civil law to abuse the Right to Conference with Civil Servants. Explain yourself, or remove yourself from my office immediately."

Adopt an innocent and confused stature. Explain that you mean no offense nor any trick, but rather if there's been some mistake you'd like to be made aware of it. All your information is stated in good faith and with no malice nor intent to deceive, and if it was some OTHER Xavier who introduced himself to you, blahblahblahblah. Make sure to give a description of him, explain that you saw him die, etc etc.

Marisa does her very best to convince the mayor of her innocence and her sincerity; she explains that, while she wishes that this was some sort of joke, she is delivering this unfortunate news in sincerity and with no malice nor intent to deceive. Marisa describes Xavier's appearance in an attempt to prove her sincerity. Marisa states that she has every reason to believe that Xavier is, quite unfortunately, dead, but she is careful to leave out the fact that she electrocuted the pool that she had seen Xavier fall into lest the mayor take it the wrong way, regardless of the extenuating circumstances.
A thought comes to Marisa, however, and she relates it to the mayor; while the person that she met identified himself as Xavier Dourdin, Marisa admits that she did not demand any proof and that he may have very well been an impostor.
Lady Dourdin glares with her piercing eyes at Marisa for quite a while. Eventually, she speaks.
"Do you expect me to accept your tall tale based solely on your word, that of a complete stranger, and a description of my son that any individual in this town could provide? Just as well, my boy may be known for his occasional mischief, but he is no treasure-hunting hoodlum; I am inclined to believe that you are most correct in saying that this boy was an impostor.
"And I have another issue with your story; what, exactly, were you even doing in this ruin? It is as if you are completely unaware that possession of artifacts by civilians is explicitly illegal under Chatzen civil law!"
The mayor, quite to Marisa's surprise, switches to conversing in Runic; she does not use the correct suffixes, she mispronounces some of the runes, and she uses some runes in incorrect order, but Marisa is able to derive some meaning from the mayor's statement nonetheless.
"Know you even how to speak Runic?"

Based on recent conversations with our new fence, I think its entirely possible that we WERE unaware that possessing artifacts was illegal this morning. We ARE new to the area, after all.

Anyway, in runic: yes, we know runic. Now that she mentions it, the gentleman calling himself Xavier had been gathering some papers from a journal written in runic. SOMEONE with a fledgeling grasp of the language had apparently decided to make the ruin their 'secret base.'

Marisa decides that it would not be to her advantage to insult and antagonize the mayor, and so she instead elects to simply state in Runic that she does, in fact, speak the language, and offers to demonstrate a spell and to present her runebook. Just as well, Marisa could not severely insult the mayor in Runic even if she wanted to; there are no Runes that could be effectively used as profane insults. In regards to her ability to speak Runic and invoke Runes, Marisa says that, after all, she would hardly be a good Runepuncher were she only able to punch.
Lady Dourdin continues to stare at Marisa with a piercing gaze, perhaps still processing what has just been said to her. Finally, she sits back in her chair.
"Yes, yes. I will allow it," The mayor has calmed in terms of her voice, but she continues to glare into Marisa's eyes with a certain intensity. Lady Dourdin directs a statement to the guard.
"Leontyne; Marisa shall demonstrate for us her Runes."
"Yes, my lady!" The guard draws his weapon and shield and braces himself to intervene, should Marisa turn dangerous.
Marisa is not bothered by this as she rummages through her satchel to pull out her runebook. After setting her satchel on the floor, Marisa flips through the book to find an appropriate spell to demonstrate; she settles on a derivative fireball rune that produces an effect not unlike a small firework.
Marisa recites the rune, and from the palm of her hand is produced a pellet of shimmering light; the pellet floats up and bursts into many tinted particles that dissipate after hanging in the air for a few moments.
The guard is visibly affected by the phenomenon, momentarily entranced by the spell, but he remembers himself and stands back to attention. Lady Dourdin, however, is not so easy to read. With only a cursory glance, Lady Dourdin would seem completely unaffected, but Marisa could swear that she detects some faint sparkle in the mayor's eye.

Marisa cannot confirm this, however, as the mayor turns her head to look out of the windows of the door leading to a balcony outside overlooking the town at the rain pounding against the building.
Marisa believes this to be appropriate enough a time for her to mention that she had discovered journal written in Runic in the ruin, and that therefore someone with a fledgling grasp of the language had apparently made the place a sort of, 'secret base.'
Lady Dourdin does not answer. Instead she sits for a time, gazing out the windows of the door. Eventually, though, the mayor hoists herself from her chair and speaks.
"Very well, then. Leontyne, are there any more waiting?"
The guard sheathes his weapon and puts away his shield, and cracks open the great oak doors to take a peak out in the hall. He withdraws his head and and shuts the door, and replies to Lady Dourdin.
"No, my lady."
"I suppose none shall find it objectionable if I lock the open doors early, just this one night. You, Marisa, shall return here at the same time tomorrow, so that we might discuss this matter in further depth."
The mayor slips her spectacles back on and strides past Marisa and the guard to snatch a cloak of a rack by the doors. She struggles into the cloak as she shoves the doors ajar.
"I bid you," Lady Dourdin mutters back at Marisa and the guard as she makes her exit from the office, "a good evening."

Marisa is eager to leave the town hall and make her way to the tavern, but she also wants to allay any suspicions that the guard may have that she was at the ruin for reasons that are not entirely legal. She was at the ruin for reasons that are not entirely legal, but that is beside the point. She settles for giving the guard a quick excuse for why she was there as she rushes out of the office through the oak doors.
Marisa is able find her own way out of the town hall. As she passes by the man at the front desk, he addresses Marisa.
"Er, Marisa, yes? I have you penned in for an appointment with the mayor tomorrow, at nineteen hours."
Marisa acknowledges as she shoves her way out of the front doors of the town hall. Marisa proceeds flip up her hood and navigate through the town and to the tavern. It is at this point Marisa becomes aware that the people she passes on the street, admittedly few considering the current downpour and time of day, pay her much less notice and show her much less concern than they did when she was wearing her traditional Chatzen garb.
Marisa eventually comes upon the tavern that she met Adrienne in and enters. She is greeted by the sight of a field of tables, rather sparsely populated with only a few patrons, to her left, and a woman standing behind the bar to her right. The bartender looks up from a book laying open on the bar to see Marisa standing in the frame of the entrance.
"Oh, are you…?" the bartender trails off in a way that makes Marisa unsure if she should say something. Quickly enough, however, the bartender continues, saying, "… Um, I don't seem to recall your name, but I remember you-- you're that Chatzen that Adrienne took with him." The bartender give Marisa's new clothes a look over as Marisa moves in front of the bar and sets her satchel down on one of the stools.
"It looks like you've settled in here quite well. Um, Adrienne said that you might come back here… among other things. Um, he's gone up to his room already, but, uh, is there anything that you need?"
Marisa mentions that she has no set lodgings for the night.
"Oh, um, I suppose that I could give you a room here. Since you're a friend of Adrienne's, I won't ask you to pay. Now, is there, um, anything else you need? Or, are there any questions you have?"
Marisa quite suddenly notices her stomach's attempts to eat itself, and it is at this moment that Marisa becomes acutely aware that she has not eaten a single thing the entire day.

Marisa decides to treat herself, so she asks the bartender for the best and most filling meal available in this establishment. She fishes the bag of coins from her satchel and drops it on the bar; coins spill forth from the bag to punctuate Marisa's request. The bartender looks down at the coins splayed across the counter and says,
"Um, I don't think that it's going to cost that much…"
The bartender disappears into the back to prepare Marisa's food. Left to her own devices, Marisa looks over her shoulder to observe the few patrons left among the field of tables. They are of different species, ages, genders, and perhaps of creed, but they all stare sullenly and silently into their drinks, taking occasional swigs. When the sulks are no longer interesting to look at, Marisa returns her attention to the objects in front of her. A glance at the text of the book the bartender was reading reveals it to be some kind of fiction novel; the page that the book is open to tells of a man and a woman who have learned the true meaning of love and are now ready to consummate
The book is unable to keep Marisa's attention, and so she decides to take this time waiting for her meal to study her runebook. Marisa is just about to decipher the meaning of one particular rune that she has been having much trouble with recently when the bartender emerges carrying a tray, upon which is piled a number of steaming plates of food. The bartender is noticeably having trouble with keeping the tray steady, and she ends up losing her minimal grip on the the tray; it slams onto the counter in front of Marisa and some bits of food fly off the plates as they clatter on the tray.
"Oh!" The bartender says, "Oh, oh, oh, I'm sorry! Is everything alright?"
Marisa assures the bartender that she was not injured in the catastrophe. Marisa sets the cloak aside begins tearing into a cut of meat.
"Oh, um, okay." The bartender fiddles for a moment, but notices that Marisa lacks a beverage, so she grabs a glass and sets it on the counter. The bartender pulls out from under the bar a bottle of wine and almost drops it as she fills up the glass. The bartender puts the wine away and puts her wings on her hips.
"So, um, I think you're set. Oh, um, by the way, my name's Zephyr. But, if you're anything like the regular patrons, then I suppose you might call me Zeph. Or Zephie. Or… Zephyr. But, um, I guess I'll leave you to your meal, then!"
Zephyr fumbles with a coin from Marisa's bag and, as she moves to to go into the back of the establishment, she notices the book lying open on the counter. Zephyr glances at Marisa as she snatches the book up, and rushes into the back. Zephyr reemerges to give Marisa change for her coin; Marisa's net worth is now within the thirteen-thousand seventy-five-hundred zone.
Before Zephyr can disappear again, Marisa mentions that she would like to pay for her own separate room.
"Oh!" The bartender hides her face behind her wings, "Did I say that you had to stay in Adrienne's room? Oh, um, that's not what I meant! I, uh, I meant that I would give you a room-- your own room, I mean-- because you're another of Adrienne's friends. Um, 'business partners,' as he says."
Zephyr retreats to the back; Marisa chews in solitude for a while. Once Marisa has finished the meal (but left the wine relatively untouched after taking a sip and discovering that she detests the taste of alcohol), Zephyr appears to take the tray of empty plates after setting down in front of Marisa a key. Marisa picks it up and looks it over while feeling somewhat bloated.
"That's the key to one of the rooms. It's upstairs, and then all the way down the hall and to the right. Um, the washroom is down here and in the back, if you need that. And with that, I think you're set. Unless, um, there's something else…?"

You're a delightful prude, Marisa. And I mean that in the good way. You might want to get something else to drink if you're still thirsty if you didn't drink much, perhaps something you can take to your room with you. And, well, unless with your RUNE POWERS you can make light of your own, you might want to get a candle of something if you wish to read in bed or something. Zephyr seems nice, if a bit simple, but it wouldn't hurt to get to know her better. I mean she's been quite kind and decent to you, and there's no reason you and her can't be friends. Marisa is prepared to simply head to her room, but she decides to first ask for a glass of water and a candle on a stick. She would like to ensure that she remains hydrated, and she was planning to study her runebook; she could use her runic fire as a light source, but a hand engulfed by a great ball of raging arcane flame presents a kind of fire hazard that no ordinary candle could.
Once Zephyr has taken the tray into the back, poured Marisa a glass of water and retrieved a candle mounted on a candelabrum, Marisa decides to try making a friend out of Zephyr. Marisa asks Zephyr various things about herself, like how she came to know Adrienne.
"Oh, um, I was born in Lenid Grande, that Aviairan enclave to the north of here. I suppose that I would have stayed there, but my family, uh, left. I didn't want to go, of course, because of all my friends that I had to leave behind, but, um, now that I think about, I suppose that it was a good thing that we did leave… It was only few years later that Chatze invaded-- but, um, I suppose you don't really want to hear about that…
"Also, I suppose that, if we hadn't moved down here, I wouldn't have gotten this job here, and then I wouldn't have met Adrienne. He came in here one day, and I remember pretty clearly what happened: He came in with a bunch of other people, all of them dressed in Chatzen clothes, right after the peace treaty was signed, and when he came over and sat right at the bar with his friends, everyone else just, um, got up and left. Then, he and his friends started talking, really loudly, about how they couldn't wait to start looking for all the artifacts in the places around the town. That didn't earn Adrienne or his friends any points with the people in town, including me, and they picked the whole county clean, but, um, then the national ordinance outlawed it, and then all of them left. Except, um, for Adrienne."
When Zephyr does not continue, Marisa assumes that she has finished speaking, and so decides to head up. Marisa drains the last drops of water in her glass and slams it down on the counter. As Marisa trots up the stairs with her things, she tells Zephyr to calm down; she seems nervous. Marisa does not stick around to listen to Zephyr babble as she covers up her face with her wings.

Once she has gone up the stairs and stepped out into the hall, Marisa follows Zephyr's direction to go down the hall and to the right; Marisa's key fits in the lock, and when she turns it, the mechanism inside the door clicks and Marisa opens the door and enters the room. Marisa locks the door behind her. She turns around to find a rather simply furnished room; there is a nightstand set up at the head of a rather stale-looking bed, which is set up underneath a window; there is a chair and a small desk set up in another corner of the room. Marisa unslings her satchel and drops it and the cloak on the floor beside her.
Marisa pulls off her new clothes and fishes out her runebook and the artifact, sets them on the desk, takes a seat, and begins studying. For a while, she reads her runebook, and is finally able to decipher the particular rune that she almost had when she was interrupted by Zephyr. Marisa discovers the rune to be some manner of freezing spell, and she realizes that she has seen many other runes that use this one as a root. For a moment, it feels to Marisa as though she has unlocked an entirely new, frigid world of understanding. This feeling of wonder and accomplishment subsides quickly, however, as Marisa commences study of a new rune.
Marisa estimates that she has spent about an hour studying her runebook, and decides to set it aside for the night. For now, Marisa commits herself to unlocking the secrets of the mysterious artifact. Marisa invokes runes of analysis, scrutiny, and understanding, and she feels a portion of her consciousness separate itself from her, and Marisa feels this portion of her conscience confronted with a great wall of tightly interwoven chains and links and strings that stretch infinitely in all directions; it is as though this portion of Marisa's conscience is dreaming while Marisa is acutely aware of the physical world with the rest of her conscience, and Marisa finds herself experiencing a sort of, 'double vision.' Marisa spends about an hour, poking, prodding, and simply feeling the woven wall, but she finds no weakness in its structure. She finds only that some sort of energy is flowing through the wires, like blood through veins.

[comment about quest, not suggestion]
You do a very good job with descriptive text and such. However it's unclear whether Marisa is meant to be a very cold and non-personable or if it's a side effect of the way you write. There was earlier the issue of Marisa taking too much of the suggestions in a literal fashion even when it made for an incredibly random set of behavioral patterns, but you eventually got the hang of integrating the suggestions into Marisa's character, such as it is.

"You should not hit your brother, Margrethe, because hitting is the last step before a real fight. You do not want to fight with your brother, do you?"
"… I guess not…"
"Can you say sorry to your brother?"
Margrethe turns to Georg. She looks down at her feet.
"… I'm sorry, Georg."
And then, when I don't expect it, Georg says something.
"… I'm sorry, too. For taking your doll."
I cannot help myself from smiling. I've always known that they really do care for each other. I cannot help myself from feeling proud.

"You would have the audacity to mislead me as to your true intentions! I know, and I am quite certain that every other person in this town with even one eye closed can see how your cult pushes its poison on us and my children!"
"Bright, it is with the utmost sincerity that I assure you that I, and every other disciple of Truth, will always respect those who do not wish us to proselytize to them or their children."
Bright did not seem to hear me. That is, if he did not willfully ignore me.
"Grethe, Georg, I have told you so many times to never speak to this woman!"
"But, Daddy--"
"You shall not talk back to me! Both of you shall stay away from this woman, and I shall not have to repeat myself a single time more! Now, away with you!"
Margrethe and Georg do as they are told, but as they leave, they each give me a look, as though they do not want to never see me again. It breaks my heart.
"You would do well to stay away from me and my children in the future, charlatan."
I smile after Bright as he stomps away.

I suppose, though, that is not important now.
I cannot sit here any longer. I see that the few others who were here have left. I do not blame them for not intervening; Bright may become quite fierce.

I am too distressed now. I might seek Truth for console, though I fear that I may interrupt the important business that Truth seems to have become deeply involved in as of late. How might I relax my nerves?

I am careful, just as is every disciple of Truth, to not fall victim to hubris and vainglory, and so we abstain from the pursuit of those material possessions of which we hold no dire need of; furthermore, one may find it advantageous to assume not the preferences of an individual without yet holding sufficient knowledge of that individual's character.

Yes. Were I so bold, I would even hazard to assert that there is not a place more suited for repose than in the soothing bosom of nature. I descend Brond Hill and enter the forest just outside of town.
Strolling between the trunks of tall trees, with occasional beams of sunlight breaking through the canopy, I find my nerves calmed. I find myself at peace once again. I am, quite honestly, unable to recall what it was that I came here to banish from my consciousness. I would suppose, then, that this trip has been successful.
But I am not willing yet to leave. I am content to simply stay, close my eyes, and focus my attention upon the aural imagery conjured in my mind by the buzzing of insects, the rustling of leaves as creatures hop from tree to tree, the birds who sing their songs…
I hear shouts in a language that I do not understand, and what I believe is someone calling out in my direction.

I see no immediate harm in staying to see what the man walking up to me has to say. His mode of dress is peculiar to me, and I cannot decipher the strange tongue that he speaks to me with as he approaches. I have never met a Chatze, so I would likely not be able to identify one if I saw one, yet I feel, with some certainty, that these people are not Chatze; from the tales related to me by Truth, the Chatze live far to the north and east of here, fighting a series of wars of conquest in an attempt to unite all of their cultural brethren under a sole banner. Yet, their aggression is not the most alarming and peculiar thing that I have heard of them; in a moment that I found myself almost barely contemplating the notion that Truth may not be speaking to me with naught but the utmost sincerity, Truth told me that many of the Chatze held the physical appearance of bipedal beasts. That is to say, they were men and women in most respects, but some held the faces of cats, while others flew with the wings of birds. I still find difficulty in contemplating the idea that out, elsewhere in the land, there exist such peculiar creatures.
But, I digress. The strange man stands before me. He speaks, yet his words may as well fall upon deaf ears.
"I must inform you, that, quite unfortunately, I am unable to understand the language that you speak to me with now."
The man seems to now see the barrier between us. He frowns and his brow furrows, and he grasps his chin in contemplation of a way around it. Or, so I would assume.
His next course of action is to engage in a game of charades. The man uproots two handfuls of grass and utters a strange word that I have never heard while pointing at the weeds. I assume the word to be from his native language. He then throws the grass away to his side while saying another word. His next move involves tearing out another handful of grass and bringing it to his throat. He seems to pantomime the grass causing him bodily harm by mock-throttling himself with the handful of grass and saying another word.
I am not quite certain what to make of it, but I remain polite and refrain from chortling or otherwise mocking him for his antics. Not that I would ever mock another person.

Based on what this man has conveyed to me, I am inclined to assume that he and his rather numerous companions have been accosted by some shrubbery recently. I am not quite certain if he has concluded his show yet, so I simply wait. There is a silence as the man allows the grass to drop from his neck. Much of it reunites with the ground, but a few blades manage to catch on his sash. He does not continue with his charades, and instead stares at me for a moment.
The man breaks from his short trance and holds outs a palm whilst pressing the other to his chest and saying, "Egil."
I smile; I believe that he is introducing himself.
"Temper," I say. Being only a very recent acquaintance, I reveal to him only my alias. I take hold of his hand with my own, and he closes his other hand around it. He raises my hand, clasped between his hands, over his own bowed head.
He disengages from the ritual and turns to head back to the gathering of people, beckoning for me to follow. I do not believe that any harm could come of it, so I follow.
The group, composed primarily of relatively young men and women, seems to have been on some manner of pilgrimage before they stopped in the forest; at least, this is what I assume as I see them gathered into circles around two carts piled up with boxes and cloth. I also see a cage in one of the carts, large enough to fit a cat, but it is empty, and the bars seem to have been warped.
Egil shouts something to the pilgrims, who all turn their heads to us. Egil gestures to me and says something more; I believe that I hear, "Temper," somewhere in his statement. The pilgrims all abandon their conversations and come to gather around me. Egil attempts to shout over the commotion as, the pilgrims perform with me the same greeting ritual that Egil did, in procession. One of the pilgrims, an older man, seems to confer upon me some manner of blessing. In any case, by the time the last pilgrim has released my hand, I cannot help but feel exhausted.
With introductions out of the way, the pilgrims return to their conversations. They have not much time, though, as one of them shouts out while holding up a container filled with a steaming stew. Apparently, someone has been preparing lunch somewhere where I could not see them. Discussions once again abandoned, the pilgrims fetch bowls and spoons from their supplies and flock to the stew. There is mild chaos as cups and a flask of some drink is passed through the small crowd, and the situation is only aggravated by the arrival of two more pilgrims on two Draebhunds. The pilgrims are both significantly more armed and armored than the others.
The armed pilgrims dismount, and the some of the others gather around the two and commence with causing a great din. One of the armed pilgrims silences them, however, by yelling out a word that I can only assume to mean, "Silence!" and heaving from one of her mount's bags a large stone with writing carved into it.
Eventually, the two Draebhunds are taken elsewhere in the forest by some of the pilgrims; I assume that it was to a river so that the beasts may drink. The rest of the pilgrims are sat in a large circle around the stone, contemplating what it may mean as they have their stew. I find myself sitting as part of the ring, Egil to my left, while one of the armed individuals stands to my right. Finally able to examine the rock without a crowd of people blocking my view, I see that the writing etched on the stone is actually Runic.
It reads, "And unto the wretched who would dare defile this hallowed ground with their corporeal presence, unclean and unfit: May The One True God Almighty uncover those wretched, and may those wretched fall out of His Divine Countenance, so that He may, in His Infallible Divine Wisdom, deem it punishment justified to smite those wretched and strip them of their corporeal forms and banish them unto"
The stone seems to be only a fragment of something much larger. Looking around at the others, some staring at the stone in deep contemplation as the rest contemplate their food, I draw the conclusion that I am the only individual present who understands what the rock says. It takes a moment for me to realize that Egil is offering me a bowl of stew. I cannot exactly say that the aroma entices me.

What exactly are Draebhunds? But as to the point in question... The real question is whether you ought to be consorting with the type of people who would do as these have done, that is to say defiled some ancient ruin in all likelihood and brought down some curse. Of course, we don't know whether they've done so intentionally or if they were completely unaware of what they were bringing down upon themselves. Regardless, they have done so, and is it really your place to intervene in their punishment if such is brought to them for their actions?

Now that I dwell upon the two Draebhunds owned by this band of travelers, I find them even more peculiar; Draebhunds are exceedingly rare in this particular part of the land, and tamed Draebhunds are even rarer still.

I know not enough of the situations and circumstances behind these peoples' actions to make that judgement. It may very well be that all of these people are party to some plot to travel the countryside, looting and otherwise defiling various ruins and temples dedicated to, "The One True God Almighty," so that they bring down upon themselves various curses and the judgements of various divine entities. It may also be that the two armed riders tripped on this rock while out walking and decided to bring it back to the others. In any case, I doubt that I shall be able to determine anything much with this language barrier in place, and I just as equally doubt the existence of such things as curses or, "One True Gods Almighty."
In fact, I am quite willing to dismiss the writing on the stone as delusions of the mad, and certainly nothing worth degrading myself through a game of charades for. Our precursors were, after all, quite superstitious.
I accept the bowl from Egil, and, so as to not offend him, try a spoonful of the stew. I am unprepared for the rather strong spices that I only now hold the misfortune of knowing have been sprinkled quite copiously into the stew. My eyes are watering over, and it feels as though there is a fire burning in my mouth, and that there is a rag stuffed down my throat. This is an extremely uncomfortable experience.

It would appear to be a cage that has been damaged somehow; I cannot presently determine how it has come to be so, but I believe there is a way in which I might.
I point to the object on the cart.
"Egil, might you enlighten me as to what has happened to that pile of warped metal?"
Egil, with a spoon in his mouth, looks at me, turns to look at the object, and then turns back to me. He sets his stew on the grass and trots over to the cart, where he picks up the object and points at it while while saying something and looking at me expectantly. I believe that he is asking if this is what I am inquiring about. I nod my head.
"Yes. Has it been damaged by a creature attempting to escape from it?"
Egil stares blankly. He seems to have an idea, however, as he takes his seat once again to my left and places the object next to him. Upon closer inspection, the object would, in fact, appear to be a warped cage of exquisite craftsmanship. I would identify it as having been purchased in Hovedstaden, were I pressed to.
Egil takes the spoon from his mouth and drops it on the ground. He proceeds to tear up a handful of grass and toss it into the cage. He begins explaining something, but I am unable to understand his words. Egil then snatches up bits of grass and scrapes them along the inside of the cage before tossing them up into the air outside of the cage, all while growling and making various other feral noises. One cannot help but find the spectacle somewhat odd.

I search my mind for any knowledge on aggressive, sentient plants, small enough to fit into hand-held cages, yet still large and dangerous enough to warrant being confined in a cage at all.
I recall having read of in my studies, and even observed in person, plants that capture and consume minuscule creatures, but the ones that I have seen only ever devoured insects, and they would certainly pose no threat to any entities larger.

>>356239
In any case, there are few better methods for learning about and understanding the natural world and its inhabitants than careful examination of them; I silently request the warped cage from Egil, and he hands it over without qualm.
Examining the interior, I find a few blades of grass strewn about the cage, left over from Egil's demonstration. I do discover, however, a kind of resin or sap smeared about that I doubt Egil could have secreted into the cage himself. I hold the interior of the cage close and inhale, and I am struck by the sharp scent of resin; understandable, given the substance previously observed to be inside of the cage, but hidden under the scent of resin, I am just able to detect an aroma not unlike that of a Menschalten perfume. To encounter a Menschalten perfume in Fraustalt is not an entirely bizarre occurrence; in fact, one may hardly avoid encountering Menschalten perfumes in the inventories of merchants operating in Fraustalt.
These individuals, however, do not seem to be orthodox merchants, if they are even merchants; they do not speak the common language of the land, they dress peculiarly for merchants, and their carts do not seem designed to allow for the convenient display of goods for sale as most merchant carts do.

It would be quite difficult to learn an entirely new language in an evening, and impossible to comprehend the common figures of speech and other subtleties of the language in the same period of time. I might like to proselytize, though I predict that effort would prove fruitless considering the language barrier. Nothing else comes to my mind, and so I suppose that my business here, as it were, is concluded.
So as to remain polite, I wait for the others to finish their meals. As I sit quietly, I notice Egil leaning over to me and motioning for my discarded stew. Assuming that he is requesting it, I nod and hand the bowl to Egil; he takes it with graciousness and begins eating. It is not long until the Draebhunds have returned to the camp with their handlers and been given large cuts of raw meat to tear into. The rest of the group have finished their own meals and remain in their circle to trade words. I take this time to thank them for their hospitality and excuse myself as best as I can; I stand up and bow in the general direction of the group.

I turn to leave and am almost clear of the camp when I hear someone calling out and running up behind me. I turn again to find Egil with an urgent expression. He says something, and holds out his hand. Assuming it to be a parting ritual, I take his hand in mine. I am somewhat surprised when Egil clasps his other hand over mine, bows his head, and raises my hand over his head. It is at this moment I am aware that the rest of the group has stood up and is gathering around me and Egil. It would seem that these people's parting ritual is identical to their greeting ritual.
Once I have survived the barrage, and with a word of farewell, I am free to make my course back to town. As I pass through the forest, I contemplate what I might do when I arrive. Perhaps I might consult with Truth; though, now that I consider my other options, I may stay at the town square to invite discussion from and proselytize to the townsfolk, or I may dedicate some time to tending to the sick and injured at the hospital. I'd like to meet and converse with Truth...

I tell Truth about meeting Egil and his group, how and what Egil conveyed to me, and my investigation of the warped cage.
Truth ponders for but a moment, and speaks unto me in the words of our precursors.
"Were I inclined to hazard a guess, dear Adela, I would surmise that your newfound acquaintance sought to caution you of an escaped anthropophagos aromatica; a species that, were you to consult a layman, you would come to know as, "acid grass." A branding rather counterintuitive, in some ways; the plant is, of course, capable of causing extensive bodily harm, though it may hardly be classified as a simple weed. It is a living plant that secretes a kind of resin, harmless to most all substances save for skin, which it may melt and corrode in a manner so as to cause permanent disfigurement, intense agony, and, in severe cases, death. The creature itself is held in high value by virtue of its role in the manufacture of expensive perfumes. It is no question to me why the travelers you speak of kept such a valuable creature under lock and key, though it puzzles, and now even troubles me, that you report a mangled cage, implying as though the destruction was perpetuated by the acid grass. By as far as I am studied, the creature should hold no capacity for the destruction that you describe; in fact, by as far as I am studied, acid grass should prove harmless to people, given, of course, that it is left undisturbed."
Truth pauses, resting a hand on the sill and looking out at the town, and continues.
"I will inform Ellard; I hold no doubt that he shall bring it upon himself to ensure the safety of all who might tread in the forest whilst potential danger lurks in it still. I shall ask Dara or Gzifa or Honora to attempt to converse with the nomads, perhaps to learn of their language and culture."
I inquire if Egil and his people are in danger.
"Lay your fears to rest, Adela," Truth says, "For I am certain that, if these people have been harboring this creature for long enough to understand the danger it poses, then they shall know to remain vigilant. In any case, I shall ask a Disciple to ensure that they remain safe, for your sake as well as theirs."
"Now, Adela" Truth turns and smiles to me, "Have you come only to inform me of these developments, or were you hoping to have a more extensive discussion?"

Fascinating.... have you ever seen Truth's face? Come to think of it, is he even here at all? Physically? Does he HAVE a physical body? I can't see his head or his hands or feet at all. Anyway, perhaps you might ask him if he has some task for you. Something to occupy your time. From what we've currently seen, you just... Do whatever it is you feel like doing, be it conversing with strangers or keeping track of children. The village adults don't seem to like you (at least some of them), so why not go elsewhere, if there's something you can achieve?

Just how powerful is Truth anyway?

Hmm. You could ask for guidance on where to go next.

I have seen the face of Truth. It is one of the most utter perfection, and from it radiates such a magnificent warmth and brightness that I may feel my mind relaxed and cleansed of all dark clouds of worry when I behold it; it is only upon seeing the face of Truth that I can be absolutely sure of goodness and wonder in existence.
Truth claims to be but an ordinary, mortal human being, and I readily admit that this certainly seems so, yet, I remain doubting; I have observed the souls of ordinary, mortal human beings, and I can observe no such thing in Truth. I and the other Disciples of Truth have consulted with each other on this, and I since find myself further convinced that Truth is no mere man or woman.

But that is all of no immediate import. I inquire if Truth has any further tasks or guidance for me.
"No, I cannot say that I hold any pressing tasks for you, Adela… though, there is one other matter that I was hoping to discuss with you.
"As you know, Adela, I have been, as of late, engaged quite heavily in matters that I have kept discreet from you, the Disciples and the people of the town; know that I have done this not out of distrust for anyone, but rather out of a necessity mandated by the sensitive nature of the people that I have been speaking with. As to the nature of this business; Adela, you are aware of my travels in the lands to the north, where I encountered such curiosities as people with the physical traits of animals. Dust of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Menschalt, it would seem, is aware as well; he has approached me to lead him on a tour through the countries of the north, so that he may foster a reputation for his enclave republic beyond the borders of Fraustalt. So far, I find myself in favor of acting as a guide for Dust; it would mean a second opportunity to learn of the cultures and people of the north, and perhaps even a chance to educate, heal, and otherwise help and reach out to the people of the north who are in need, with all funds taken from the treasury of Menschalt. Dust finds himself in favor of this arrangement as well, for he recognizes how these humanitarian efforts may positively affect the relations between his country and those of the north."

"Adela, I would like for you to join us as well. I would like for you to bear witness unto the wonders of the north, and to work with us to provide a better future for those there who are without hope otherwise."
