It's been pretty quiet in the few days since the dwarves attacked our home. I've stuck around since everyone seemed to want me to train a bit more, but I think I'm getting as good as I can at such a rate.

Oh, I'm still improving at everything, but it's not happening at such a huge rate. I don't think my skills at healing and marksmanship will get much better without spending a whole lot of time.

Shabin is also hitting a cap, I think. I've been letting her borrow the souls as well, too, and it has shown. It really does seem to help us with our abilities even when we don't have the souls, but they always do give us an extra burst when available.

And now, I'm going to get prepared to leave for awhile. But the question is, where should I be going, and with who?

I'm closest to Shabin, but I don't think she's ever been outside before. Fraga is also a nice person. Kradis I don't know very well, but he's the best person I know at travelling outdoors.

Speaking of Kradis, I got a little map from him.

So as for places, well...
A) There's my very first couple of homes, I'm pretty sure they're close to each other. I wouldn't really know what to find there, but there could be a hint.
B)The dragon, Voxol. He might know something about me, since he suddenly kicked me out calling me, uh.. names. I'm not sure.
C) The closest human town. I bet they would have more knowledge about the world and everything, but it may also be the most dangerous. Well, except for maybe Voxol. It also is the farthest walk, maybe 2 or 3 days or so. It's not like I'm in a hurry, though.

If you think I should go somewhere else though, then just say where! But until then, I think I'm going to spend some time getting ready.

Chee, I'd say head out to the human town first- the farthest place away- and stop by all the other locations on the way back, visiting Voxol last. That way you can find all sorts of information and ideas for forming questions... as well as get good practice with your magic before confronting someone that could be really dangerous. He might be your only current contact outside of your current home, so you'd want to be well prepared for that meeting!

The dragon it is!

Also, I seem to be having trouble passing souls to people I don't know very well, Chop included. So, the list is Fraga, Shabin... uh, I actually haven't tried with Kradis.

And yes, I completely forgot to mention. I've gotten basic Invisibility and Strength spells. The strength I can only hold for about half a minute, and can't cast any other spells. Invisibility is pretty solid, but Fraga warned me there is such a thing as anti-invisibility wards, or see invisibility potions, or things like that. Also, I can't cast any other spells with this on either, as well as doing anything complicated. It really is difficult just to keep it on! I can also cast a pretty mean fireball.

Shabin can almost beat Chop, with strength and souls.

I should only bring one other so we don't have too few to hold the cave, so I'm bringing Shabin. I wonder how she'll like the outdoo...

Well, I'll ask later.

I doubt I can kill them, and I certainly don't want to! Also, I don't know what contact lenses are.

I'll leave Shabin up at the ridge, and invisi my way down. No one speaks for a awhile, until what I think is a girl walks up to an armored person.

>"You're SURE about this?"

>"We just had this conversation, woman! Every night, right at sundown, that dragon flies off behind the mountain away from us for at least an hour. We just walk in, quickly grab what's comfortable, and leave."

>"If you're not sure, we're all dead."

>"Don't get cold feet, now. We just run in, grab a handful each and get out, we won't spend anywhere near the full hour."

Oh, they're after his hoard. Um.. he never leaves his cave. I think these people will die if they try this, they don't look strong enough to fight him. It looks like there's only a dozen people in this camp, but I can't be sure.
>>

I am pretty sure these humans will be less friendly to you than the dragon will be, even if you are trying to help them. They don't look powerful. You could probably kill them all without Shabin's aid. The dragon may be thankful for this, they will die either way if the dragon sees them. You could still try helping the humans but don't expect anything that is not a hostile reaction.

I am inclined to warn them- but make sure not to do it in a fashion that would let them outnumber you! That girl seems uncertain about this in general; you might follow her until she's alone somewhere, then drop your invisibility and tell her this is a bad idea, the dragon doesn't actually leave its cave and utterly loathes thieves (in the "hunt down and kill their villages" sense). Also give your name and get hers, find out why they're silly enough to even think to try this. Then go invisible again and leave before the humans can do something rash and hurt you.

After you've done that, it's the humans' own fault if they're stupid enough to get killed. Give them a couple hours to clear out and go see the dragon, at which point you can tell him about any humans that are left and get full credit for warning him about thieves.

What's more, you can't risk angering the dragon, which is the being that you came here to talk to in the first place, since that would make it less likely to tell you anything that it knows about your nature and history.

I'm willing to blame your current bout of reckless stupidity in the name of helping people who consider you roughly as worthy of life as a non-sentient animal on that paladin soul. No other explanation makes sense to me, even if I've met very few paladins who were quite that self-sacrificing. >Telling her to do things that go against her nature will hurt her and make her lose trust in us. She's not a soul sucking evil bastard who cares only for revenge.
If it's in someone's nature to do something with a high probability of getting themselves killed for the sake of people who believe their life is worth no more than that of an animal and would kill them out of hand, then that person's nature needs a kick in the pants from nurture.

Don't get me wrong, I supported warning the humans since they were going into danger and it was easily within our abilities to do so, even if there was some risk to us in that they might attack (which they did). It was the right thing to do, and I'm all in favor of Chee doing the right thing. But even the most moral will fight against people who threaten them and theirs, and fighting for someone like that is absurd. Chee went on to quite possibly die in order to save people who consider her too worthless to be worthy of the term "enemy", and that's moving past the dictates of morality and into foolishness.

Those humans will by all available evidence go on to ruthlessly slaughter (and possibly eat, based upon their comments) any kobolds, gnolls, and any other wild types they come across regardless of intentions. Why are their lives worth more than those of the innocents they will likely kill in the future? After they demonstrated that they were unwilling to accept an extended hand of friendship, they ceased to be the sort of people that needed helping and started being the sort of people that a proper paladin would either destroy for the good of the world or convert to a more peaceful way of thinking. Does Chee have the power and determination required to go after them and ensure one way or the other that they won't stain her hands with innocent kobold blood for saving them? Because that is the demands required by taking this path towards trying to do the right thing. You nurse a venomous snake back to health and you'd better be sure that it doesn't go on to bite people.

The dragon who hordes a disproportionate amount of treasure and uses it to lure people into his cave with under the guise of it being unguarded is doubting your moral alignment? Seriously? I mean, he's got enough gold and power to just get some cows and chickens and raise his own food, but decides to lure sentient creatures in so he can eat them, and he thinks he's in a position to comment on morality?

Chee, you need to take a second to think about this. He's going to cause the deaths of lots of people in the future, and his horde could save a lot of good people from starving. Not to mention the lives you could save with his power, which he seems to only use to lure people in to be eaten.

If we eat this dragon's soul, he can't help us later if he learns anything whilst we're away. There's nothing stopping us from coming back later if we need to be... after all, Chee, you were told never to come back, and yet you have. To quote a book... "What has happened once will never happen again. What has happened twice will surely happen a third time..."

Don't eat him... not yet, at least. Not for a while. Not until you have a better reason than "I'm hungry."

To the north, beyond the sea, is an island that one calls his home. Southeast, in the smaller peninsula beyond what the humans call the 'beastmen wilds' is the second. This will make little sense now I am sure, but ask for a human's map and the knowledge will be clear."

Besides we're not going to kill any of these people. You're going to wind up having to let go of those souls again. There will be no repeat performance of the dwarf paladin incident!

Well, last resort we could put on the hat, Chee. That would however inform the lich who has the scrying spell on it just how strong you have become. It would completely ruin the element of surprise. It would also inform them that you most likely spoke to the dragon, and they will probably try to kill him or something.

So maybe we shouldn't put on the hat.

You said you can't block him from doing this. Maybe you can manipulate the souls themselves? Participate in a tug of war with him?

Throw a big blast of healing at him? I think he's technically undead.

Vox never really liked hugs but maybe he's different now!

>"What are you doing?"

"I'm Cheelop, your best friend ever! You had a spot of health trouble, but you're better now. Um.. what year is it?"

>"I do not pay mind to the years counted. I have lived too many. Too many to consider a kobold 'my best friend'."

Well, I don't think it's complete amnesia.

Guys, he's a dragon. He won't care about humans trying to kill him.

Tell him an undead abomination of epic proportions tried to eat his soul, and by applying healing magic to the base of where it's bound, you managed to force it to give it back. If he asks what it's bound to, tell him it's a mobile container, so it can be where-ever it wants.

Hey, you said he could tell when you're lying. So don't lie. But uh, maybe we shouldn't tell him exactly what happened. Just uh... say that he's got a bit amnesia right now. You don't know if his memory will come back or not, and you don't know how much time he lost... but it was at least a few months.

Ask him how he feels. Suggest that maybe he should check on his hoard. Maybe ask him if he wants to meet your friend that has eyes like his?
>>
No. 328390 ID: 9a34be

Just tell him that the devourer tried to eat his soul, but you partly stopped him, you're sorry you couldn't do more, and then flee.

The devourer probably grabbed the relevant memories, anyway, considering the dragon doesn't have them.

>"What an extraordinary claim. And yet, I sense no lies within you. Perhaps you are trustworthy, in which case, I owe you my life. Pathetic, but perhaps you can help me further. The last thing I remember was flying to this mountain range to set up a new home. Tell me, do I have one here?"

I hear Voxol has been in this land for about five years, so it seems that's how long he has forgotten.

5 years isn't long for a dragon. Let's go show him his hoard! Also uh... hmm. I wonder if we should get Shabin to come along with us. Or maybe just pointing his home out to him would work better.

The humans will probably wait out here for a bit. It might be better not to mention them so that we don't piss off the dragon again by admitting we scared them off and revealed his illusion. Then again people will probably STILL try to steal the dragon's treasure even if some rumors circulate that him flying off is an illusion.

Quick travel could be VITAL later on. Let's take that deal. Asking him a couple more questions couldn't hurt but he probably won't answer anything important. Also I'm not entirely sure that we should bring up the lich business again but if we DO, be sure to tell him that he already gave us some information already. It would be deceitful to squeeze more info out of him just because he forgot about what he told us already.

Second, ask Tae if she'd be interested in traveling with us as a human ambassador and liaison. Sweeten the deal by offering a contract with a high cut of any earnings or spoils, and mention our ability to empower those who are with us. [have Shabin provide example with rock-busting)

strong as we are in the healing arts i don't think we can take on the litches yet. we need to get stronger somehow. the paladins would be of use but they would probably kill us on sight. by the way, ask our new human companion what is up with that. Yes, with this and our previous map, it's clear we can make our way to the southeastern lich AND visit some human towns with maybe only minor detours. We should definitely do that. We'll want to stock up on information and equipment and possibly allies before actually trying to combat a lich.
