We still have 20 years of nuclear energy…

From what Melanie could find on the area network, there are mainly 2 things to mine from asteroids, mineral and radioactives, there are a couple special type of resources, but they can only be found after digging so I guess well get to them when we actually find some…

Now a party is a fine idea, lets do that :3

Next time we arrive on a port or trade center, I’ll ask how much it will cost to paint the whole ship…

I compliment Melanie on her fashion sense… she purrs a lot and ask me if I wanna put one of her dresses… maybe another time…

The party doesn’t go so well… most of the ex-slaves doesn’t believe in our promise of freedom, they look ratter scared of the whole thing… most also would like to know what should they do…

We have almost 100 people in the ship, different races and genders… but most of them don’t know anything useful… maybe we should start teaching them stuff… after the party of course… :3

Give an inspiring speech about how though you are all former slaves, you now have a chance to carve out a life free from bondage and the tyranny of others. It will be difficult, but if everyone can work together for the greater good someday you will all be able to find a place to call home. No more fear of being worked to death by the uncaring haute bourgeoisie, or your children being enslaved and forced to commit unspeakable acts.

holy what? we bought 200C worth of slaves and now we have nearly a hundred crew members? what, did we go to the red-shirted ensign clearance sale?

Jen was bought for 100C, okay, so she has useful skills. But these guys would have to average less that 2.50C each. I'd be astonished if they can tie their shoes without strangling themselves. They certainly don't have all their body parts or vital organs attached, because even someone capable of light lift and carry work should be worth 25C. Hell, the broken robot was 20.

Okay Jen this is what you need.
First find out there size strengths, weekness's, abillities.
Then organize them to perform tasks based on said abillities.
People who are strong give them tasks that require heavy lifting or have them on guard duty.
People who are vigilant give them monitering duties.
People who are smart, problem solving.
If all of them suck give them a task you think would fit them if they suck at it send them to do something else and place another person in charge. You also may want to pick up some friendly grizzeled washed up vetren pilot or something to show teach them.

wh- but- nn- hrrg- just- no! I am cool with the devaluation of sentient life in a society with slaves, but this is ridiculous. From a strictly utilitarian standpoint, these people are worth more than that even untrained. If you can stand up straight without drooling on yourself, you can be a waiter, a porter, or straight up manual labor. Then there is STILL the potential value after training them.
Unless Jen's last name is MacGyver, these guys would need to be both untrainable and vegetative to justify the worth disparity between them.

Total inventory assessment: Who are our skilled personel? We'll be spending a lot of time in space, we should get a rotation of training programs started that any of them can sign up for, taught by the skilled personel. This way, ideally, we can have many hands to call upon in the event of an emergency.
Not all the classes have to be boring skills however. I'm sure dance instructing or cooking would go over really well too. We'll have to make an announcment too regarding whether or not any of them want to teach anything, no matter how mundane.
This'll keep morale high, the crew occupied and usefull, and it'll promote quick thinking and adaptablity.

Yearly salary is a good estimate of the worth placed on different jobs. The average unskilled, floor mopping office janitor makes one quarter what the average top level senior engineer makes in a year. I stand by the 25C a head number I estimated earlier. http://www.payscale.com

And with that, I recognize that I am raging over something which does not, in the end matter. So, having made my argument, I am going to go sit in timeout for a while.

Lets see, I have 19 years, I was in the engineering training area for slaves until I was 8, then I was moved to the pilot training area for 5 more years, that’s 13 years of training and then I was bought…

The regular slaves are in concentration camps, they are feed other death slaves and are keep there until they die, the galaxy produces more slaves than food, and that makes the price very damn cheap…

Eri is 25 and is a skilled medic…
Melanie is 13…
Lisa wont tell me her age… :/

I put everyone in rotation, I ask anyone with knowledge to teach the rest, I try to let people do what they fell like doing… most of them seem very exited about learning new stuff…

Name our ship "Freedom Train". We are starting an underground railroad. We won't start doing anything for a few years so we don't attract attention and can pick up assets. Our end goal is equality for all beings. It's ambitious, I know, but we will get there someday.

Did we junk the old cargo ship?

We should eventually get some small fighter craft or combat drones to store in the hangar for protection. AA guns are great, but nothing beats a combat air patrol.

If anyone is thinking of attacking us for loot, tell them the following. You leave us alone. We give you a small bit of the money we make. We tell you if anyone is encroaching on your turf. We advise other people to take up the same practice. You get cash and intel for zero risk. The reward/risk ratio doesn't get much higher than infinity.

I'd ask Mr. Ratman what the people on that planet would buy and start making that stuff.

Train engineering and electronics to level 5 as soon as possible. Then train mining so we can start using Mining Laser II's.

Sure, gunrunning is profitable, but we eithe need to:

Make the guns, in which case we need materials and schematics, and so we have to mine since we have no money now.

Buy the guns to sell at higher prices, but again we have pretty much no money now.

Just because we start out mining doesn't mean we keep doing it, it is just that currently, Mining is pretty much the only thing we can do with what we currently have (unless you want to be an interplanetary farmer's market).

agreed. No gun running in the slow-as-balls lightly-defended mining vessel.
We are going to be stuck with mining for a while I think. Or possibly large scale food production, if slaves are cheaper that produce around here. We could try to get a bit more of the ship converted to food production, though we would have to be more careful with the spores if we go that route.

Well, I decide to get closer to one of the asteroids, they are all protected by satellites and some have weapons mounted…

…almost all the asteroids are mined by independent persons,… I chose this one, because the craters are big enough to hide the ship and there are no visible weapons mounted on it, … there is a mining platform on the other side of the asteroid, we could check it out later if we build a scout…
…the cloak works, and we can approach without being detected, I put the few miner drones on rotation and set the construction computer to build more when we get enough material…

There is a sector in this asteroid field called the chaos MNCROME area, there asteroids collide all the time, and most ships are destroyed in a matter of seconds, even capital ships… I guess if we could survive inside, we’d be relatively safe…

(and also, I wont talk about noserubbing or anything like that from my past… )

Its true… we don’t have more constructed living quarters, but that doesn’t mean we cant build more of them in the plenty of cargo space this ship has…

All habitable planets and much of the inhabitable ones are colonized…

Also, the scout made some scans of the asteroid interior on the way back…

rescuing as many slaves as possible as soon as possible is not going to go well in the long term. Eventually we will be found by someone mean, and if we are just a giant tasty looking candy with a yummy slave filling, everybody is just gonna get sold back into slavery again.
We need to focus on securing enough money, space, food, and above all, defenses, that we can PROTECT the slaves we free long enough for it to matter. Make a note to come back here later, when we can really do something good.

Doesn't Jen and company have weaponry and armor?

If there is only a few mounted weapons inside the base with the slaves being captured, then it's best to take advantage of the situation right now.

If the Masters return, they may have more than just a few added guns. They may have soldiers or other sorts of backup.

It's time to man up, arm yourselves and get ready for battle. Take some of the freed slaves with you and go on the rescue mission.

You can't start a revolution to free slaves if you'll miss a good opportunity like this when it shows up.

Plan for the rescue mission, earn back the respect of the others.

Now go out there and save those slaves.

The plan:
1: don't get caught, don't draw attention to ourselves.
2: earn a steady income using as legitimate a method as reasonably possible
3: reinvest that money steadily into improving our ability to create additional wealth, defend ourselves, and increase available living space.
4: buy more slaves as step 3 allows/demands and repeat.
This method avoids attracting unwarranted attention and ensures that the people we save are not going to be greeted with worse conditions after our rescue.
5: If all goes smoothly, (ha ha yeah right) eventually we will find ourselves with at least one enormous capital ship, a fleet of support craft, and crew to man them.
5b: We will also find ourselves in a sector where slaves have become more valuable, simply due to scarcity. That should improve conditions for all the slaves we have YET to free as well.
6: Once these conditions are met, we will be in a position do demand, by force if necessary, that slavery be abolished across the whole of known space.

If anything, this event should reinforce the fact that:

ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES

If we go around allowing our desire for hugs and warm-good-happy feelings to dictate our actions, we'll keep digging ourselves deeper into trouble as shit continues to pile up. Buy the robot and make it happy, buy slaves and make them free, it's all good and well and might help you sleep at night, but you're messing up your future.

Now deal with this, and keep a firm commitment to the fact that you can't afford to do everything that seems good at the time. Yes the right thing to do might be to free those slaves, but it wouldn't be good for everyone in the future. You'll just bring about attention that will get you all captured.

Even though I still think that this is gonna turn out worse than we hope.

Define the operating parameters of "free"
Is this going to involve them dying?
You know what? Explain your whole plan to me. If I agree that it would make her happy - and indeed, if you've thought it through it should very obviously - then I'll sign off on it. And see that you get more authority around the ship to boot.

This is going to waste a lot of resources, attract a lot of unwanted attention, and bring in people that we don't have room for. It's a bad idea.

In other words, it's exactly the type of thing we've been doing the whole quest. Why stop now?

This would be a good thing to try when we have somewhat more resources. For the time being, we need to get ourselves self-sufficient and defended.

Besides, we can't approve a plan with such serious repercussions on our own.

Status, lets see… we haven’t made a coin of money… xD, but we have stolen a lot of mineral, from asteroids, everyone agreed that trying to liberate more slaves now would be risky, but they wanna do exactly that when we are power ful enough, that’s why they are training to make and army out of this ship…

The girls say that what happened wasn’t my fault… and they don’t blame me… the problem is… I do…

We are crossing the NMCROME area in our trusty ship, always cloaked… we are approaching the chaos area… when we reach it, well see what we do, for now, we steal and train…

Ok, power armor… happy-bot left … … …

Happy-bot left prototype of schematics for a man controlled miner armor… we have currently a squad of these in training, a lot of the people in the ship applied for them…

I guess everyone wanna be like happybot…

I’m in the cargo hold 1, now the army train and storage area…. And here is the leader of the power armor squad…

About the lasers, there where interesting things brought back by the miner bots from the installation, apart from deep miner vehicles and specific mineral extractors and purifiers, we got a second construction unit, and a research unit, that can be used to reverse engineer whatever we find, we also found schematics for guard bots and transport ships

We also found the schematics happy-bot used for the overloading bombs…

Let’s see… for starters… I don’t consider myself as captain, nor does Melanie or anyone else… still… the people rescued trust us to come up with a way to free everyone…

Also, during my… absence… the ship name was voted, and they called it, “The Bullet”… I don’t know why…

Now, we are here… the ship current route is to the chaos zone, as you might recall is eternal asteroid storm…, we have a lot of systems around us, and a military CGA zone near the chaos area…

…there is also a empty space area just passing the CGA control zone… empty space is dangerous because most ships get lost without star charts reference, and since there are no stars, there is no solar sail nor solar collection… most ships just don’t get near those areas… that’s why it might be a good idea…

… if we can come up with a plan…

Perhaps we could make a makeshift space station. By buying additional ships, then welding them onto this ship, we could eventually create a large enough 'super ship' to house as many escaped slaves as we want, upgrading rooms, living quarters, farming space, and other things as necessary.
The main problems in doing so that, first, we'd have to acquire the resources needed to do this (additional ships, some way to weld them together in space or on planet, the means to survive indefinitely in space), and second, eventually we'd probably need to get more cloaking devices in order to cover the whole damn thing.

... I dunno, I'm just... throwing this out there. I'm trying for a long term solution. We can't just run around without a plan forever... can we?

No. Weld them onto each other. If we get a bunch of empty cargo hulls and stick them together in empty space, we'll have a good base. Throw in some Hydrofarms and cloaks, and leave our unskilled slaves there, then use the Bullet to do stuff.

Yes, the chaos zone, to enter it we need a way to navigate inside and not be destroyed in seconds…

… not only we’d need a shield generator… we need weaponry to destroy most of the the incoming asteroids, we’d need to be able to destroy any asteroid of sizes a1 to a5, a1 being micro asteroids and a5 asteroids half the size of this ship…

…fortunately, we are deploying sentry robots in the hull of the ship, these robots are armed with two laser cannons each, and while this wont destroy any medium sized ship, its still enough to destroy any incoming a1 asteroid, an even small cluster of missiles, if we ever encounter them…

Now, the possibility to enter the chaos zone and remain alive enough to find a suitable asteroid is less than 2%

There's another problem.
The asteroid would have to be durable enough to withstand a constant...

Wait.
Do you have something akin to a gravitic generator?
You could make a base inside an asteroid, then attract the whirling debris towards it.
Assuming you didn't breach something from the initial impacts, you would have a replaceable shell of the smaller asteroids.
You might be able to pull off something similar with a powerful magnet if the asteroids are very ferrous.

Yeah, this is a long-ish term goal. To accomplish it we'll need:

>1. A Shield Generator
I recommend purchasing that as soon as possible.
>2. Bigger Sticks
Again, we'll have to purchase at least some, though reverse-engineering with our new resource module will allow us to produce our own.
I'd say that we could put bigger cannons on the 'bots, enabling them to deal with a2 debris, and put bigger guns on rotating points on the ship.

That's just to allow us to traverse the Chaos zone. To build our base, we'll also need:

>3. At least one additional farm
We should be able to reverse engineer this and build it ourselves
>4. More Cloakers
Again, we can do that without interacting with outside forces
>5. something to provide power
We may need to purchase this, I'm not sure
>6. a fuckton of resources
We'll have to do a whole lot of claim-jumping to fund this little project.

So, our most pressing goal is to trade some of the minerals and stuff that we have for bigger sticks and a shield.

I was TRYING to put these things on your shopping list a month ago. Buy people out of slavery. Slowly increase your fleet size, working your way up to at least one large capital ship. Yeah except that's not what we're talking about. Rather than making a fleet, which requires lots of engines and weapons, we want to make a station. Ergo, a fleet is currently unnecessary.

Lets first communicate the finding to the military vessel in an entirely lawful and normal manner.

Then, we wait to see if they rescue them.

No. The Military is in no way involved, and we'd like to keep it like that. Keep in mind that we are both slaves and pirates.

>>36272
I never said I want people dying. In fact, I planned to minimize that chance to the best of my ability. I just pointed out that if people do die, that doesn't mean that we should necessarily abort the mission.

>>36291
Give the original group the right of first refusal. Ask them first. If they don't want to come, ask for volunteers elsewhere. We don't really know anyone else, so we can't really help you if they don't want to come.

Also, looking at that thing, I notice that the engines are primarily pointed backwards. I don't know how maneuverability is on that thing, but if possible, get yourself turned around, approaching the wreck aft first, so if something is coming that you can't handle you can GTFO quickly.

Fortunately, the military ship was left behind a long time ago, I should have pointed that out…

Yeah, the main ship thrust is backwards, but it have full frontal and axial impulsors, its not as maneuverable as a combat fighter, but I think it will do…

Yes, this should be a mission with volunteers only:

“This is gonna be dangerous, who is with me?”

Oh be nice to them, Jen.

Also <3 the space spores.

Anyway, let's go! They are good crew members and everything should be fine.

Assure them that you just don't like putting them in danger. They're your oldest friends, after all!
But also the most experienced. And the only volunteers. If they want to come, we can't really stop them.
Just ask them to be careful! We worry, y'know.

The group is ready and we go to change clothes for space survival…

I don’t think spores can be fused into anything, and it doesn’t matter, for now, we gotta concentrate in retrieving the most stuff we can…

I hope this goes well…

I suppose the spores are space spores and so don't need a space suit to survive in space.
