Fen and Zizi will make it out fine without us, and I can't think of anything special for them to do aside from avoid killing people.

So let's go with Kip and put on our best trollface.

Let's see, then... I have just heard a guard slump to the ground, back by the slave pen entrance. Dinner is going in the next room. Most guards are on the lookout, but they do not seem to be aware of the intrusion.

I hear footsteps coupled with my own. I do not believe Momo is the sort to do this, so I will assume Zizi is tailing me.

Found anything interesting in your investigation?

Get out of earshot of anyone, and whisper "Who's there?" Verify it is Zizi and not some other invisible person. If it is, tell him to go and escape with Fen, as you heard the guard get knocked out just now. We can't let Fen come running in search of Zizi, and let anyone see you avoiding killing Fen. This is important for what we are about to do next.

What we're about to do next is go find Shup, and ask why the hell Fen isn't where he's supposed to be. Accuse him of incompetence, and say that because of him you'll be branded a traitor. Basically expose him for ordering the assassination mission.

Actually, here's a better idea.
Bust into the dining room angrily and snarl
"You demand I slay Fen, but can't even keep him in place long enough for me to arrive? Are you incompetent, or simply trying to cause me grief?"

Ah, but I have just entered. Momo and Zizi followed immediately, and it sounds as though Momo, at least, has veered into the slave pens.

Due to the guards in the vicinity, I must whisper.

>"Zizi. Escape with Fen."

Ah, he appears to be attempting to run past me. Which would happen to be in the direction of the dining hall. Perhaps I should stop him, but getting in a scuffle with the air may look strange to those guards. What a troublesome sibling.

I do not believe I can do earth magic enough to modify a constructed room of stone. Though if I could, my worry is placed that I highly down I can create a fissure and miniature earthquake around Zizi, that the guards would not notice.

But, a good old fashioned trip may not look too out of place.

Welp, so much for going completely unnoticed. Time to switch tactics!

Announce that you've discovered an intruder, and go 'apprehend' him. Then we can take him off in the proper direction, so that he can 'escape' after we inform him exactly why he shouldn't go kill Shup.

1) It's fucking dangerous.
2) He's got wives, man. They love him, you wanna make widows out of them?
3) Killing him will create a power vacuum and chaos follows that. Think of the big picture.
4) We need him alive for our own plans.

Continue into the dining hall as if nothing happened. That mask gives you terrible peripheral vision and muffles sounds, so you have a great excuse for not noticing something.

"Ah? Perhaps I dropped something."

"Zizi. I will deal with Shup. He has wives, and he has power that will be grabbed for desperately should he die. It will not do to have you die either, as Fen requires your assistance more. Go back and assist in his escape, he will require help without Momo."

"No, I do not see anything. Excellent attention, though, Sirs!"

Good. It seems as though he is listening, this time. The guards look at me suspiciously, but, as commendable, they see it as wise not to push the issue.

I could just as easily leave, now, with everyone else. Though I will not kill Shup, I would not think it terrible to give him trouble on my last day as a dragon knight, at least my last for awhile.

In short, shall I leave and rejoin Fen, or continue on and confront Shup?

Confront Shup.
If Shup's wives find out he's trying to have Fen assassinated then Shup will be put into a very difficult position. They support him because they love him, and that is why they're likely to interfere with his plans.
They appear to disagree what he's doing to Lily, but plotting assassinations goes far beyond that and they're going to want to 'save' him from making a 'terrible mistake' before it's too late.
Consider making an ambiguous mention of the king being furious when he finds out.

Thankfully, we made it back, once Kip came to me. Our movement is restricted from now on, though.

I'm protected by tournament law. If nothing changes, and so long as we don't commit crimes in the eyes of the tournament officials, we don't think Shup or the King would come after me. Momo is the same, and while she may be a high suspect to my breakout, she was never seen. Zizi was never seen, either. The both of them will probably have to be the ones that go out and brings back food for us.
Lily and Kip are at most risk... Shup can attempt to bring Lily back, and the King can order for Kip. I'm not sure what to do with them.
...or Cheelop, who seemed to clutch my cloak the entire way back.

>"Sir," Kip says, "While Lily and I are at risk, it is not allowed for Shup or the King to enter a contestant's room uninvited. If we lodge ourselves here, then we will likely not be bothered."
"So, what now?"
>"Now, Sir, you are going to train for tomorrow's matchup."

Should I have anyone else do anything, while everyone is gathered?

Ask Zizi and Momo if they would be willing to help disguise Lily.
We can't do much to hide Kip, but if people can't identify Lily then they can't capture her. Decent disguises include Kiki, some kobold that is dating Zizi, or Momo's boyfriend.

Oh, and ask Kip what happened to Chee's father.
>>

Talk to Momo about plans by which both of you can survive the tournament.

If Fen loses, Momo still has her one chance to spare an opponent right? So that should cover that possibility.

Kip said Momo was a favorite too, I think, So the crowd might let her live if she loses. We should have a backup plan though, because the bloodthirsty stadium of spectators is not reliable.

>"Very well, I will get Zizi here to help me produce a convincing comparison, later. Just remember, they likely know that there was illusory magic involved inside of Shup's estate, and they may bring specialists to counter such things. Lily should only leave if she must."

"Alright, do what you can. And Kip, what happened to Chee's father?"
>"Sir. After the loss, Shup reclaimed him, and sent him off with Cheelop's mother to work, but I do not know where. Do not worry about that, however. Please, Momo, Zizi, teach Fen what you know. I will handle Cheelop."

>"Dear Fen, I am getting practice out of this too, you know. Besides, a shield will be of marginal help to you when it comes to fighting me."

>"Wait wait wait, bro! Momo's in the tournament?!" Zizi says.
"You just found out? Well, actually, it was awhile till I knew..."
>"No brother of mine goes around hitting girls! You'd better not hurt her!"

Ughhhh. "Is there anyway you could spare me if you win?"

>"I was not planning on it, but... I may change my plans. If you win, would you spare me?" says Momo.
"Of course! Besides, I think the crowd likes you, they may not mind that."
>"Perhaps. We would both lose, otherwise. Now, Lord Spike has mastered three plain magical balls he can throw. Fireballs are one, of course. The other is an armor rot. It will not affect your clothes, but if you bring a non-flammable shield into combat, you will need your shield to avoid contact. The third kind is a gas. It is harmless on its own, but I would make sure to avoid them so long as he is casting fireballs at you. That is all I know, but it is possible he has more magic. Now, we will do this all night, before we both rest until our matches."

Say "You talk too much", then rush him with your shield out. If he's at all competent then he's going to try to attack your shield, which is why you are going to not let his attack land on it.

Magic users tend to be pretty shitty in close range, so get in close and don't let him get any distance. He certainly can't use his fireballs or gas up close, so if you get within arm's reach forgo all defense and brutalize him as fast as possible.

Oh, and go for exposed flesh. His clothing might be armored.

Don't fight defensively. Time is on his side, as he can lay gas throughout the arena to deny you that space to dodge in. It is very unlikely that he will simply run out of mana before he blows you to kingdom come or rots your shield. Be aggressive. B. E. Aggressive. Also, do note that you will have to see what type of ball he throws to decide if you want to block it or not. Block only fireballs.

i agree to rush him. melee fighters, as a rule, *must* close distance to casters as soon as possible.
>>346140
it might be better to rush him with our shield to our side, instead of in front. we don't know how long each takes to cast, but we can prepare for the worst and assume it's only as fast as his reflexes. He might cast armor rot first to rid you of your shield early on and the shield's profile is a much smaller target than its face.
alternatively if he opens with a fireball, we can block.
Fen: rush him and try to smash him with the thin side of your shield, twisting your body into it. If he casts fireball, pull it in and block; if he casts armor rot, swing it wide and outside his target envelope--you can either make contact with the shield to his face/head, or get a grip on the back of his head with your hand and slam it down into the ground.

Risky! I could get him in a grapple, but I don't know how much mobility he needs, he could blast me with full power if I do something rash.

>Kick him

I'm trying! But a kick requires good balance, and if I don't make it count for everything, will leave myself completely open and my shield or sword would be as good as toast! We're just dancing around each other. He knows what I'm up to. We're both in the same circumstance, if one either of us makes the slightest slip on their attack, the other will be able to kick the crap out of the other! We're both on the offense, but very careful about it.

Feinting and fancy moves aren't doing much, he's able to read me pretty well. The amount of concentration he has to put on that ball is showing, and it's slowing him down. My back was, however, just flogged, so I'm not so keen on twisting around much myself!

Shift so the outside of your shield is on the ground and you have your weight on it, then kick off and pivot around so your head is around where your leg is now.

Here comes the tricky part.
Kick your legs off the ground and pull them into a roll so you can to carry the motion into what could have been a handstand. This will have you upside down and facing the mage.

If you can hit him then uncoil your legs and shove off with your arms so your feet slam into where his head is now. This will give you the best chance of injuring and disorienting him while forcing him to the ground.
If he dodges then carry the motion through into a roll to get back to your feet and lunge at him before he can regain his balance.

No. 346309 ID: 1854db

Well, whatever he needs to do, he can't do it if you're standing between him and the gas. So PUSH him away from it. Keep up the pressure. If I were him, I'd realize that he can't land a fireball at all if you've got that shield, and preparing gas leaves him open for an attack. He's either banking on this taking you out in one hit through the shield (unlikely) or he's going to rot your shield next instead of lighting the gas. So yeah, keep attacking. Also, be sure to disperse the gas by shoving your shield into it. He could just light you on fire then but you can handle THAT long enough to take him out.

Shit, we should've brought some source of fire ourselves. Then we could eliminate gas pockets at a safe distance, or when he's standing in them.

It's too bad we didn't get the chance to learn to use poisons. If we had, the fight would be won now.

Forget zig-zagging, just drop into a dead run and tackle him with a shield bash.

>Dead run

One, two, three... the fireball is catching up quick, he's already fired another metal eating ball, and is about to shoot off another gas ball! I might barely be able to reach him before he fires a fourth if I keep this sprint straight at him, but...

I don't know if I can afford to do a dead run! The metal eater looks like it's going to try and take out my defenses a split second before the others catch up. The gas ball and the fireball will hit me at the same time, if I keep going at the same pace.

go right, hold your breath, and dive THROUGH the gas ball.

Catch the gas on your shield. Use the blast from the fireball to launch you at high speeds towards the mage. You'll take a lot of damage but if done right you will get a one hit kill.

The gas and fire will combine if you keep going the same pace? Well, there's an easy solution to that. Throw something at the fireball to disperse it before it catches you. Like your scimitar. Then draw your dagger. You want to keep moving after the rot spell takes out your shield, TACKLE the fucker and stab him to death.
>>
No. 346363 ID: 1854db

...or, if we're gonna try to surf the explosion, throw the scimitar at the rot spell. We have to get rid of that or the fireball.

I'd rather throw my dagger at the rotball! I don't think throwing my scimitar would do much against the fireball. Actually, this served as a good test, the dagger didn't do much anyway! Oh well, that's why it was a backup!

"Ahh, I'm kidding, Lily!"

Smack!

>"Fen, don't joke about that! I was so worried!"
"Hahah- o- ow."

Well, I seem to be in one piece.

"So, Kip, uh... did I win?"
>"Of course, Sir. You passed out after flying past Spike. The audience thoroughly enjoyed that fight, and between them and the tournament officials feeling that a stab through the heart was more of a defeat than simply passing out, you were declared the winner. Besides, between you and Spike, you are the only one who can fight in the fourth matchup. You should rest, and then begin thinking about your next fight."
"Oh, right. Who is my next opponent, anyway?"

That's right. After the fight with the Knight, Momo would be next. I'm not looking forward to that.

"Do you know which knight it is, and what they can do?"

>"Yes, Sir. His name is Lance, and, though not the strongest Knight in the kingdom by any stretch of the imagination, he does have an uncanny talent for weapon use. He has been known to make a weapon out of everything. He does not have any magic, aside from his armor, which I will train you in the manner of breaking through. That is very important, as he will most likely not present his eye socket so easily. I will cover more details later, Sir."

"Do I have a chance, honestly?"

>"Right now, you would be crushed in a disconcertingly unceremonious manner. Thankfully, Sir, there is a three day rest, as the tournament is halfway over. Therefore you will have time to train for both the Knight, followed by Momo. Alternatively, you may spend the time attempting to escape into town if you wish for an alternative to the tournament."

"Well, whatever I do, I'm still exhausted. I'm going back to sleep, if you don't mind."

>"Of course, Sir, it is not as though Lily and I are going anywhere, regardless. Although, Momo and your brother have gone to Momo's room to discuss the looks of Kiki, so that Lily may have a disguise. Until then, do rest."

>"Sleep well, Fen."

"Thank you, Lily, Kip. Goodnight!"
