Still feel a little drowsy. I decide to leave the baby in peace.

Annabelle's lying in bed staring at the ceiling, as she usually does in the morning. When she notices I'm in the room she's up and right in front of me in the blink of an eye. Her eyes sleepy and half open, she grasps my shoulder painfully and speaks in a hoarse whisper.

"My wonderful husband. Please be careful on the ranch today. You're so fragile. Be careful. Don't LEEEAAAVVEEE UUUSSSS. We NEEEEED YOOUUUUU!" She makes a clicking noise and then starts not-so-gently gnawing on my shoulder. "Your shotgun. Don't forget to bring your shotgun!"

I step into the kitchen, where we keep the gun cabinet. It is filled with the remnants of last night's meal. I can't believe how much those two can put away. Especially the baby. Six pounds of uncooked beef a day seems like an unhealthy diet for an infant, but he refuses to eat anything else.

I take the shotgun from the cabinet and four shells. Should be plenty. SHOTGUN OBTAINED!

Seems like a good plan.

It's foggier than usual today. Bad omen. I ought to be extra careful. I head out to the shed where I keep my tools and supplies.

Running through a mental checklist of what I need to do. Should I...

A) Fill all the cattle's troughs with feed and water
B) Check on the 'quarantine barn' to see how the infected animals are doing
C) Try to track down whatever's been attacking and eating the cattle
D) Look for the missing pajamas

Oh boy... Infected animals. Well i'm sure this tale will not be riddled with frothing horrors and depressing plot twists. Check briefly on the quarantine to make sure it's still stable, then proceed to feeding the cattle. After that do a more thorough inspection of the barn to make sure everything is in order.
(By the way i'm really digging the artstyle, so i'll be watching this quest with fair bit of enthusiasm.)

Some kind of parasite. Causes strange flesh growths. It's very contagious so I keep the infected cattle locked away.

I figure I should fill up all the feed troughs first. I'll check on the quarantine barn later. Not sure if I want to track down whatever's eating the livestock in this weather. On days like this, I'd rather just finish what needs done and get inside where it's safe. I can decide later.

I grab the wheelbarrow from the shed. I keep all my tools in this shed, so it might be a good idea to come back if I ever need anything.

This is always the most tedious chore of the day. Best to just let my mind wander and burn through it...

I should probably save my ammo in case I need it. The herd is too big to get an accurate count without dedicating a task to it, but I try to keep a mental note of all the healthy cattle as I take a wheelbarrow full of feed and use it to coax the three infected steers to the barn.

If I'm going to be doing any slaughtering, I should probably get the Bolt Gun from the shed as well as Gloves and some other form of protection. This parasite's not supposed to be contagious to humans, but I ain't taking any chances.

The doors are in splinters. Looks like one of the windows was smashed too. All that's left in the barn is a few steers that seem to be on their last legs. Looks like whatever did this took a few bites out of one of them and then gave up. Probably not a very appetizing meal.

I'd rather avoid this unless it's absolutely necessary. I can afford to lose a few steers, but if this thing spreads to the whole herd we'll be ruined.

It's possible something broke in through the window and spooked the livestock enough to stampede right out through the door. Don't see any real tracks to follow.

Another strange thing - the hay bales are stacked up neatly against the side of the barn. That was on my chore list yesterday, but I never got around to it. Maybe Anna took care of it last night?

This thing is no civilian. It makes a hissing noise that seems to be aggressive.

Aim for the head.

Usually, the head is a small target and is hard to hit. However, this enemy's body is right behind its head in your line of fire.

I have no idea. Where could they have possibly come from? Looking closer, I don't find anymore teeth but I do find the hatchet underneath the workbench with the handle broken into splinters.

Anna likes to leave vegetables in my tool box. I don't know why. I think she's trying to be thoughtful though, so I haven't had the heart to ask her about it.

Repair the door for now. Not sure exactly how they broke- I reckon that the predator scared your steers and they busted the door down so it's probably not too much of a problem, but if we're wrong and they get out again the whole heard is in danger. Don't take any precautions. Remember, they were already out and may have infect others. You know how to run your ranch. Don't take any chances. Can't afford to loose your whole heard to an infection now can you.

I take the celery out of the toolbox and eat it on my way back to the barn. Tastes like celery and metal.

I quickly try to piece the door back together with the vice grips. It's...something. Doesn't look like it'll hold up too well, but the doors are back up at least.

The three sick steers are still standing around the barn. Sometimes the infection can be reversed if it's caught quick, but these three seem too far gone.

I circle back around the barn to where the hay bales were stacked. The hole is still here, just where I left it. Can't get a very good view of what's inside from where I'm standing. Looks like it's dug down and almost horizontal underneath the barn floor. I see gouge marks in the dirt. Look too deep to be from an animal's paws.

A) Crawl down inside

C) Forget it

Please do not go down the scary dark hole with the family of predators. Board up the hole for now. Find something to pump water or cement into the hole; either they leave or you drown them, problem solved.

After making sure my shotgun's loaded, I take apart a hay bale and start lighting clumps with my lantern. Hopefully this won't burn the barn down.

A thick smoke starts to pour out of the hole as I toss burning hay inside. After several minutes, something emerges.

I freeze up for a minute. Anna is asleep in the house. And also not a spider.

It starts to move while I hesitate, and I panic giving it both barrels. Probably unnecessary, but it's dead for sure now. I have one shell left.

The fire doesn't seem to be spreading, thank God. The creature is ugly. Its leathery skin hangs off its long thin limbs. I don't want to look at it anymore so I move on.

My ranch is quickly becoming a wildlife pyre, as I've burned two bodies today. Don't think I'll ever get used to that smell.

I hurry up and coral the three infected steers into the barn. I consider running back to the house to get more shotgun shells, but the sun's already starting to get low in the sky and I absolutely can't stay out after dark. There were seven cattle in the barn. Two were so sick they couldn't move. I've already found three. So that leaves two more to track down. I just want to get this over with so I can get inside and wait out this fog.

I try to coax the steer to stand up, but it won't budge. It rows weakly. The sound is thicker and higher pitched than usual.

The shock from the steer bursting open makes me kick the lantern, and the light flashes out in an instant. I stumble away, half blind, and try to wipe the pus off my face with my sleeve, which is also covered in pus. They've never popped like this before.

I get up and run, stumbling and slipping. I can barely see the remains of the infected steer through my burning eyes. The creature is too fast. It catches up and knocks me down.

It stomps savagely on my knee and I feel a sickening burst of pain. The bolt gun is still in my hand, but not loaded. The shotgun is loaded but it's lying on the ground ten feet away.

I can see another figure approaching. Anna?

Anna, get the gun!

Bludgeon the thing with whatever you've got.

Punch it in the eye with bolt gun. If it recoils, see if you can reload.

More immediately, get whoever's standing there to plug it.

The creature rears back to strike me again, and I jab the bolt gun into one of the many giant black orbs on its face. It recoils in pain, and I take the opportunity to reach into my pocket and take out a blank. My hands shaking, I fumble with the bolt gun. I yell to the approaching figure. "Get the gun, Anna! Anna no!"

She ignores me and hits it with the shovel, completely knocking it off its feet. While it's scrambling on the ground, she thrusts the spade through its face. The handle breaks into splinters in her hands.

The creature starts to twitch as a puddle of blood forms beneath it.

My leg is still in a lot of pain, and I still reek of death. But as the sun begins to set and the last rays of light start to disappear, I calm myself. It doesn't matter if she's human. She's my wife, and I'll love her no matter what.

"Don't forget the shotgun," I say. She turns around and fetches it, with me still in her arms.

We walk in silence for a while until we reach the house.

"Anna...what are we going to do? There's still an infected steer out there. We might lose half the herd. And I won't even be able to work until this leg heals. I hate to say it, but things don't look good."

"What do you say?" She ponders for a moment and then continues, "We'll muddle through."

She's right. I did what I could with what I had, and the day is over. Whatever happens, we'll figure it out. She carries me inside.
