Is 'Legolas' your word for the forest people? We don't have one. It sounds nice.

Maria explains her plight.

"Ah, I see. Normally I wouldn't disclose this information to a...well...female, but the only thing I've heard of that amount of men together would be the forest north of the castle. It's earned the nickname 'woman-eater forest' in the past few years. Granted, quite a few girls come out alive, but they tend to be rather kind at heart. Maybe they just hate evil women."
"I don't think my brothers would be women-killing barbarians."
"Your father wanted to kill them all for your sake, yes? Everyone outside the castle knows it."
"Ah."

His eyes seem black from far away, but they're a brilliant green when I come closer. How queer.

The D- Tom keeps sniffing the air for some reason...

Looks like he smells something he really likes--

"Vandis."
"Hello, Rhell. Otura doing fine?"
"Splendid. Barthazard not doing anything reckless?"
"I think he's slept with every single girl we came across on the way, but otherwise he's rather well-behaved."
"I rarely see you outside delivery, Vandis. Occasion?"
"Jonathan, bless his soul, has never had ale, and he's been whining about it. Boy's much too weak to go and get some his damn self. We originally were going down to Haland, but it's been barricaded for some reason."
"I appreciate you coming here for it."
"Old friends, aye?"

Maria slowly takes Tom and sidles up to the back wall so the man named Vardis and the forest man named Rhell could talk in peace. Rhell lowers his voice, but Maria can still hear. Tom makes it hard with his obsessive sniffing.

"I hear it's the winter folk, for it. They've moved to a less populated area for the marriage."
"Scathing stars."
"It's the first time a demon has become betrothed to a human. A good omen."
"Not for the RedEyes, still. Leral's going to be happy, anyways, the optimistic little twat."

Rhell whispers something Maria cannot hear.

Maybe we should leave...?

"That man has beef jerky on him," Tom whispers. "By the gods of the red rivers, it's salted and...I think that's Hullberry. I've never had jerky marinated in Hullberry before."

Cursing on the Red Rivers is really uncomfortable, but he seems to like Beef Jerky quite a bit.

I myself am more concerned with the marriage. The winter people are omnivorous, but aren't opposed to eating humans that are enemies or dead. It's an enormous step.

Well, there's levels of demons.
RedEyes are carnivorous. I don't know how they get the nutrients one usually acquires through plants from. There's either the predators, or the scavengers like Tom.
Forest Folk live in the forest, and are herbivorous. The same problem as the RedEyes concerning diets that are harmful to humans to have. They keep to themselves, but are welcomed with open arms and treated like higher-class humans. Most of them have florescent green or light brown eyes.
The Winter Folk live in the northern country and places coated with ice. They're omnivorous, and don't attack humans often, so I suppose it's why they're closer to acceptance. They have really blue eyes.
The only other omnivorous demon are Scorpions. They live in the deserts and savannas and are rather terrifying. They're very territorial you see. My tutor always said I should run when I see yellow eyes. He didn't comment when I pointed out that humans can have darker yellow eyes occasionally.

Finished with her monologue, Maria approaches Vandis.

"Excuse me sir, but my friend catches the scent of dried meats on you. Might I take some?"
"Of course, little lady. I bought them for a RedEye friend of mine, but I have a plethora. I know how crazy vultures get for it."

I was not aware there was such a familiar and pleasant word for scavengers.

"What, vultures? They aren't too different from predators, but they spend most of their lives underground weaning from their mummy. They somehow have a lot more empathy than normal RedEyes."
"You said you have a friend?"
"Mm. Leral was born upperground and alone, so he isn't technically a vulture, but he's probably the sweetest, sappiest demon this side of the country. Little kid, he is, but he's got the strength of a knight."
"I see."

He's not saying it directly, but I think Vandis is raising an abandoned RedEye child.
