Let me summarize:
The first step in raising an army is preparing for said army. That means a steady supply of food and places to house the soldiers in.
To that end I need people who are not afraid to live in the frontier. People who are driven by a cause, not by coin.

This will be difficult.

I recall you suggested that I visit the refugee camp to the south to ask for help. It seems like a good idea to act on that now.

It will be half a days travel from here. I can get there in the evening.

If the word is out that you still support Malto, that might cause problems if the people don't like him.
Check with Timotei and Sticks about politics. I doubt they'll be much help, but it might warn you off some pitfalls.

The fortress to the south is the center of North Piacevole. My past home where I am no longer welcome.

Checking on my underlings goes hand in hand with asking for their advice. I find Sticks in the Hall of Man.

"Sticks, I need your advice. How does the common man feel about Lord Malto in these parts?"
"I think it's looked down upon to talk about them, but I don't know if he's actually hated."
"Alright. How are you feeling?"

Thus the plan becomes reliant on coin anyway? Perhaps it's for the best.
A handful of strong mercenaries can do more than a hundred peasants driven by fear.. and a salary is easier to keep track of than a heart full of fireworks.

I just need to hold on to the pennyless loyalty these two have for me to form an unwavering base.

"I understand. I apologize for keeping things to myself. You both have powerful talents that are going to waste just sitting here. No longer! From now on I will be going on many trips to find us allies.
Timotei, I will be bringing you if I need a strong hand. Sticks, I will be bringing you if I need subtlety. I'm sure we will get quite busy soon."

Sir Ridder, I think its time to drop the knightly persona and talk to her person to person. She's got a point about the deal, but to act with this kind of extreme prejudice is uncalled for.

"What in the hell did I do to you to gain such hateful words? You've made it loud and clear that my fallen lord was someone you absolutely despise, but you've given me nary a reason nor idea why and refuse to still. While we've vastly different opinions of the man, I am not LORD MALTO.

Voices, it is clear to me you are gravely misunderstanding the situation.
In front of me stands a revolutionary: A woman responsible for the destruction of my kingdom.. and the death of my Lord.
I may not be Lord Malto, but I am loyal to him for eternity. Would me and Vita Vispa have met during the revolution, it would be on the battlefield. One of us would not walk away.

But after my loyalty to my lord comes my duty to protect my kingdom's people. Though my kingdom is no longer mine by name, I will continue to fight for it.
Vite Vispa is not much different from me: Only her loyalties lie on the other end of the spectrum.
That is the only thing preventing out-right hostilities right now.

It seems that clinging desperately to 'goodness' is getting you nowhere.
You have no honor. Your allies left you to rot. Just about everyone else seems to think you as naught but a monster or villain.

Perhaps you should become a villain, and show them just how right they were... but at any rate, if you have no other ideas, you could make your way back to Coriander's tower. At least there, they accepted you.

Ridder, as a voice, one question for you.

If Lord Malto was the cause of this situation... If he set the village on fire... would you stand by him...

If you would, it is time for you to once more knock on the door of the cave. There is nothing more for you to do except embrace the evil and use it to bring peace.

If not, then you are not fighting for good. You are fighting for a dead cause. Vitta, then, is on the side of good now.

The choice is yours
>>
No. 80885 ID: e75a2f

Lets set something straight, Ridder. You are not a knight. You have no honor, no lord to champion, and no cause to pursue beyond personal obligation.

Vita is not a knight either. She is a radical; a revolutionary championing a cause that is as dead as your own, completely devoid of any knightly honor.

You are not a knight. Vita is not a knight. You are both holding onto personal beliefs and goals that died with your lord. What you do is without obligation to anyone and anything. You can choose to hold up this hollow facade just as Vita is holding up hers, and march around with imaginary pride and honor just as she does, but the reality does not change.

Right now you and Vita are in-capable of cooperating because of this facade. Make it painfully clear to her that she is no knight, that her cause is as dead as yours, and that continuing to bicker about it is unproductive and places the people you both wish to help in greater harm than good.

The first step would be to cast off that banner you still drag around with you. Lord Malto is dead. Your service to his people is in YOUR name, not HIS. Old wounds cannot heal in the presence of old idealism.

Or how about we take the third option. here's what i think we should do, we should return to "boss's" headquarters, from there we can "pledge" our "allegiance" to him. Just think about it for a second, if we can get into his base of operations we can take it down from the inside out. And when he's alone and abandoned under his broken hold, we smite evil like we've never smited evil before.

If you really don't even want to touch the place at all, Ridder, I suggest a thorough inspection of surrounding towns or villages. Ask around the goblins, kobolds or in Sepia town, corrupt townships love to betray its members if the boss collects supplies there. You should be able to handle any goddamn thing there if your confident that place of his is the most dangerous.

Do you still need Timotei for detecting evil? The highest sources of evil should direct to you of places he's been. Even in the hub of Sepia town his aura should be noticeably different. Goblins may also have some interesting Allies of Lord Malto seeing as how he saved a previous generation of them.

And stop calling us abstract voices, we're you. Don't try to go the insane route and say all the crazy thoughts are by different people inside you. That'll lead to downfall.

It seems odd that, despite forming some sort of reasonable accord with these goblins, the dark Boss should go to the effort of specifically recruiting just a single one. Wouldn't it make more sense for him to amass an army, bringing all the goblins to his direct control? And instead, he brings a single goblin.

Obviously this goblin must be special. Do some investigating as to this particular goblin's abilities, because obviously she must have been capable of some serious destructive power. To avoid rousing suspicion, present yourself as a lovestruck admirer, and this "Finnie" as the object of your desire.

You still need a base of operations and at least some helpers if you're ever going to manage to tackle this individual. I still believe Sticks and Tim will yet prove useful, but perhaps they need some time to themselves. When the time is right we'll come back for them, and by then, perhaps their attitude will be somewhat improved.
In the meantime, broaden your horizons. If your foe has recruited Goblins, perhaps you should do the same. Yes, I know what you're thinking: monsters on your side? But it will help you get into the head of your opponent, his dealings, and further, they're less likely to betray you. Goblins have low standards. A little kindness and a show of equality -- of brotherhood and cooperation instead of ownership, of handshaking instead of head-petting -- is likely enough, since goblins are so used to being treated as less than equal.

Personally I'd say you should go after the one you spoke with earlier. He seems capable and single-minded when it comes to work, so that much is a start already. Besides, he seems to have a personal investment in Finnie, the goblin your sworn nemesis recruited, so he would have a personal stake in finding her, and returning her from the dark influence of the dungeonmaster. You can't lose!

This could be trouble. Some of the worst slaughters in history were made possible by technological superiority. Remember the repeating crossbow? The rolling ballista? The clockwork-powered bees?
I suggest we keep an eye out.

No, that's it! If we are to compete, we need technological power as well. We will in short order need to take on a particularly intelligent and inventive recruit, and in so doing we'll also have a good task to put them towards. Two birds with one stone, am I right?

I did my best to whipe out the location of the refugee camp now that it has moved.

Good locations for strongholds are difficult to find. It appears the Boss' has secured a strong point dab in the middle of this area.
I have heard of old dwarven fortresses in the mountains to the west, particular in the vulcano, but eventhough it would be the most effecient military wise it'd put a large distance between us and our foe.
The other possibility may be to follow up on rumors I heard of elven ruins in the woods to the north east, but these might be considerably less well defended and eroding due to aggressive flora.
In both cases I have no idea if there may still be ancestors present.

You know, now that you mention it, maybe we're not done here.
I mean, think about it. Your big enemy boss guy has allied himself with this village, right? Well there's a lot more to leading a righteous force than just the soldiers standing next to you! You need to start winning some hearts and minds! You need allies, same as any other force does! You can't possibly manage everyone at once so it's nice to be able to call on some self-sufficient forces that are ready to aid you. After all, it's easier to be able to call on a whole pre-established goblin village than to try and lead every goblin under your rank and file.
If the boss has allies, you need allies. And what better place to start than right here? Why not exploit the natural distrust between these two neighboring gobbo villages? They don't like each other much so it shouldn't be hard to convince the others to join you. Go there, seek an audience with their elder(s), and see what you can do to win them over.

Alright, let's see. Things that can be used to our advantage:
+fire
+uneven ground
+our mount
+meatshields (are they too high to duck behind?)

Ride him down if you're still mounted. If that's not viable, at least try to take the higher ground. Make your priority surviving this battle. If Black Fang dies it will be a setback, but not so much as a crippling wound to you would be. It's possible that your patron town would be willing to treat Fang's wounds once you have him under your control.

I have the advantage with my reach, but I think his blade will go straight through my spear. I'd rather not risk losing my weapon in this situation.
With my mount I also have superior charging speed, but again there is a downside: I won't be able to react and dodge as fast due to having to wait for my mount to respond.

I will use a rush to taunt him into striking me, then strike his shoulder when his blade it making its swing.

Fist pump mentally. Shake on it. Treat the beastly warrior with respect. He may be an underling and a monster but we've seen what happens when respect is not paid.
Besides, you don't want to piss him off. This isn't the kind of guy you want turning traitor down the line.

Once that's out of the way, let him in on more of your plans and ask him if he has any insight on a place nearby you can occupy -- an abandoned fort as previously considered, or perhaps a den of evil that may need cleansing first.

Whatever the case, we need us a base, and then we'll retrace our steps to the place where that one goblin's case puts her local disgrace on the other's displace, and curses every trace of her squarish-shaped face. With two lackeys on brace we'll present them our case and by good God's grace we'll soon make our chase towards the evil one's space.

Looking at the map again, I see the merits in being close to several settlements. It may also be easier to cross through forest than steep mountain slopes.
Aggressive flora may still be a problem, however. I will need capable workers to restore the place and hopefully improve it.

I can travel north, rest at Sepia Town, and continue east to the forest. The travel itself will take less than a day, but that does not including the break.

The other is Nakraska, a humble but capable carpenter and lumberjack, who is also able to craft simple weapons and tools in times of need.

They're willing to join me right away.

Good. Strike a heroic pose and head out to the elven ruins. Once we've set up camp we'll come back for our tinker.

Good idea.
Iesgip can deal with aggressive flora and provide food, Nakraska can begin work on renovating, with Black Fang to help with heavy lifting and protecting the base.
When a room has been prepared I will head back to pick up my tinkerer and her equipment.

Now we head for Sepia Town. I am desperate need of some rest.
