Preliminary hypothesis for the cause of the explosion is an electrical short in the Volviti hybrid's capacitor stack. This short degraded surrounding tissue, releasing stored energy in a catastrophic chain reaction.

The Volviti clone has suffered major internal organ damage. It requires immediate medical intervention to survive. It is estimated less than 20% of the Volviti's capacitor stack is recoverable. Many organs and parts of the woody skeletal frame have been damaged or completely destroyed. Extensive repair work with cybernetics and whatever cloned parts can be successfully cultivated and implanted without rejection will be necessary. However, time was already allocated for major surgical procedures to complete installation of subsystems so the time impact is not severe.

Nonetheless, due to the extent of the clone's injuries, it may be advisable to terminate the current clone and make a fresh start. Metroid hybridisation has allowed fast growth but a complete restart with a new clone will incur significant time penalties even if a smaller clone is acceptable. This will allow less time for power armour development, brain transplantation and rehabilitation.

Cause is probably the enhanced capacitors and the Metroid gene. Simply caused an overcharge in them, resulting in a shorted circuit which then exploded the capacitors. Damn, should have accounted for the hightened speed of the charging process.

nah, we're to busy to make sure everything runs smoothly on our end seeing how these projects are needed to save all our asses. If you stick with the space pirates long enough you learn to save the lording until AFTER you finish your project. Because half the time something will come along and either push it back or destroy it completely, like the federation, or metriods, or the bounty hunter.

Given the healing abilities displayed by metroid absorption, could we attempt feeding the hybrid some life forms?

Triage. Maybe we can clone a new capacitor stack or implement a cybernetic implant to interface the remaining stack with electronic capacitors and/or general outside electrical devices. If we clone a new stack of the same type, we can install reinforcement measures to prevent similar events from happening. Perhaps also emergency relief measures. I suppose a lack of a brain prevented the clone from knowing when to stop.

Maybe a compartmentalized design? Split the capstack into segments for flexibility, reinforce the sides facing toward other organs, but leave a relatively weak face to channel the blast in a safe direction. Some sort of ablative padding inside the suit around that part, of course.

Triage. What an excellent opportunity to add even more augmentations to the clone!
Replace the capacitor stack with an artificial, detachable variant and manufacture reserves. In case of accidental or intentional overload, the Volviti can eject the capacitor stacks with its railgun. As it has just so helpfully demonstrated, the difference between a capacitor and a bomb is the controlled release of energy.

Once the source of the explosion has been verified and countermeasures put in place, I want to up the Volviti's exposure to electromagnetic radiation again in order to promote natural regeneration. Apply dye to the augmented limbs as they regrow/repair. A light yellow should fit with the clone's existing color scheme.

Also, regarding the increased environmental vulnerability for limbs extruded from ports, that is not an issue as long as they are protected when the ports are closed, and the rest of the organism is protected either way.

I doubt she'll make it. We could experiment with the damaged capacitor to integrate the open parts with cybernetic enhancements, but I highly doubt the Volviti will think at maximum capacity (which is already disastrously low to begin with) without a steady supply of energy.

Focus on refresh. Stabilize her if you can, but only to experiment on her remaining organs and ensure this doesn't happen a second time.

Not an electrical engineer, admittedly, but I'm about 85% sure anything like that would result in the capacitors detonating inside the barrel, since a railgun which is functioning correctly is essentially a capacitor which explodes in a precisely controlled manner. Contrasted with a coilgun, which is an inductor that explodes in a precisely controlled manner.

The biological railgun might not be a good method of ejecting the core at somebody, then. We could just... throw it. Strong vines!

Sample dissection has determined that the cause of the explosion was growth defects in the capacitor stack. A low rate of growth defects is normal for Volviti and does not usually cause health problems until late in life. However the Volviti hybrid's defect rate is anomalously high and the capacitor stack was 981% of the volume of an average Volviti specimen.

Internal shorts caused by a cluster of growth defects combined with over-charging caused damage to the internal structure of the capacitor stack followed by explosion. The high defect rate is speculated to be related to Metroid chimerism - genetic splicing of capacitor-stack with Metroid nuclei has not been expressed evenly from cell to cell.

We basically have one choice in this matter, if you think about it. There won't be anyone on the courier craft aside from our two test subjects. Someone needs to fly the thing, and though Boiler's subject can read maps they don't have any have any piloting experience.

Knowledge of alien races, and presumably their cultures is valuable in the infiltration of federation society. His medical knowledge could also prove useful out on missions.

With 20% or so of the capacitor stack recoverable as it is, that's still roughly double the size of those from an unmodified specimen. Even after taking account for the 56% size increase overall of the volviti body, it's still an abnormally large capacitor stack. So not all is lost there.
Just to stay on the safe side, sensors should be placed on the stack to monitor the charge level. This can be linked to the suit to control the integrated power generator based on the body's needs.

I'll add my vote for A, to hopefully save on rehabilitation costs and because I suspect a medic will be useful, in addition to the usefulness of xenology knowledge when traveling and bounty hunting.

Observation: Project boiler requests medical and social support due to Boiler's sub-sufficiency.
Speculation: Garden requires technical and analytical properties in order to be self-sufficient upon Boiler's failure.
speculation: Most circumstances requiring medical skills are either sufficiently low-urgency to permit research and out-sourcing, or occur in scenarios sufficiently urgent that the only viable operative has more important things to be doing, such as neutralising encroaching hostiles.

Given that the Volviti clone has an integrated multi-tool and data probe, this is logical. Subject D will be the brain donor for Project Garden.

Correct. They are hermaphrodites. They reproduce by collecting another Volviti's pollen and fertilising their seeds with it.

Deniable attempts at bribery and applying for exception on medical grounds. Definitely a resourceful Pirate Trooper. However Subject D's chronic and - on closer inspection - possibly fabricated case of the bloops is completely irrelevant when only the brain is needed for the project.

However this is second instance of early delivery of a test subject. Crowding in the barracks must be worse than anticipated. Diverting Subject D to the obstacle course in the shuttle bay. The Project Boiler candidate is already down here and a baseline for this trooper's performance before brain transplantation would be useful.

This concludes Project Garden. The transplant will be conducted as part of Project Glasshouse.
