Wow, okay.

Let me just say, thank you all who are currently participating! About a month ago, I wasn't even fully sure whether or not I'd make something at all, and now here we are a chapter in!

Ok first off, I want to know what you guys think. Is the quest any good? Is it exciting? Boring? What do you want to see more of? What are your criticisms? Just let me know what I could be doing better.

Second, what are your questions for me, if you have any? Please ask, anything about my thought process, stuff that's not being explained well in the story, anything.

I'm still trying to figure out if Jaa is a male or a female.

Other than that, I like this quest. Unique looking races and what I thought was going to be a silly quest about getting something to eat and then ending, turns out to be a slightly serious quest that continues after getting breakfast. Looking forward to more chapters! And also looking forward to if Jaa will ever get some stilts to look everyone in the eye when talking to them. Or maybe just carrying a ladder with them everywhere they go! XD

Heck, the race is insectile, Jaa may not even be able to breed.

Thanks! The idea was kind of to start out with something kind of light, or silly even, and then get deeper into the "plot".

I use plot with quotation marks, because while I have notes and objectives about what I want to happen, the events and timelines are embarrassingly fluid. For example, the Raitekian shopkeeper, Tori, wasn't even supposed to exist when I started! At first, it was supposed to be Lyulya (The salad guy Tellikan) who had the books. But him to a food vendor, and adding Tori sort of fit in to the story better after a few updates.

And about those stilts, don't hold your breath... ;)

This looks really promising so far!

I like the depth here; this gives the huge impression that so much more is going on, and that we don't have the full story. I look forward to discovering more of it.

We seem to have either invoked some kind of situational authority we didn't know we had, or stumbled into a situation very different than we were briefed on. Which is both fascinating and terrifying.

Definitely need to do some digging and get more details, perhaps from our two new friends.

Hi guys, I now have a Tumblr and a page on Furaffinity. I will be using them to upload art and other materials related to the quest and the universe behind it in the future. Here are the links:

Quick question for you guys:

Is the dialogue/conversation understandable? I've noticed that when there are more than just the two characters talking, it gets a bit confusing as to who's talking when.

I'm still sort of experimenting a little, so let me know if you think it's too confusing or if it's alright.
>>
No. 103972 ID: 91ee5f

>>103971
It's not that hard to understand. As long as you're being specific about who is talking, then I don't see any problems with what you're doing now.
>>
No. 103973 ID: 9e85ca

It's fairly clear. However, if you're worried about that, or you want to make it even more fun, you could use character icons.

Ah, nice! I didn't even know Icons were a thing!

Thanks!

Well, I'm like a whirlwind of electronic bad luck, my tablet is broken now. I'm afraid I'll have to cut the next update a little short, and then take a small tablet-reacquiring break.

Anybody know of any good quality tablets out there?
>>
No. 104105 ID: ca0e20

Depends, the easy answer would be anything Wacom that is within your price range. I don't really hear people talking about much else. Although if you have enough to get into Tablet Monitors. Then I know Yiynova and Monoprice sells some cheaper than Wacom does, but that's about it. Also I heard about those like a year ago.

I love the huge amount of background information, language information, and culture. It feels like we're looking at the tip of a very large iceberg.

Quick question: given that you introduced Jaa as having studied culture and history extensively, do you mind questions on the background, or the most recent request to find a research library for information on recent history and culture issues to the extent Jaa doesn't already know them? I'm not asking for a massive info-dump (since I don't want to ask you to unnecessarily fill in myriad details rather than having them just come up as needed), but it'd be nice to get more information on very specific and relevant topics, such as the fight between the Raitekian/Mårk-Liondi war, and Kremul-Täitet.

Sure, do you mean like in the quest, or to be explained outside? I'll be slowly but surely uploading little things here and there on my tumblr and furaffinity pages, and if it's not too plot related, I can also show stuff here on the discussion page.

But also, I'll be explaining relevant information in the Quest itself as needed, of course.

>What? No, I just ate this morning. I'm fine until tomorrow.
Suskenians only eat once a day?! O_o

Well, that's what I get for trying to compare them to real life. But they seriously only need one meal a day? No way I could ever do that! XD
>>
No. 105240 ID: 398fe1

I guess that's why it's Breakfast Quest. That's the only meal she eats!

Well technically, humans can also survive on one meal a day.

But yes, Suskenians only generally eat one large meal a day, usually in the morning.

I meant in-quest, as with Jaa's adventure in the library and subsequent dream. Thanks, that (and the subsequent recap of the less eventful research) was better than I could possibly have hoped for.

Is Breakfast Quest still going and just on hiatus? I hope it returns someday; it's a lot of fun, and I'd love to see where it goes next.

> Is Breakfast Quest still going and just on hiatus?

Yes, I've been taking a break for school and to work on some plot-line and lore stuff. Basically since the beginning I've planned hardly anything, just going with the flow and making it up as I went along. Occasionally it showed, but I think I handled it for the most part. But now I want to make sure I have something to go on in the future, so recently I've begun developing stuff 'behind the scenes'. Now that I'm actually going and organizing myself, I've noticed that I've kinda fucked myself over in some places, retcon-wise. There are some ideas I have that won't work because of some things I've already established in the quest, and so I have to either work around that, change/scrap the idea, or change a fact that's already been established. None of these choices are particularly appetizing, and I have to decide on a few things for different reasons.

But, I have started working on it again, and that's what counts! An update can be expected in the next few days. After that, update speed totally depend on my schoolwork schedule and energy after that until around mid-May, when I won't have anymore excuses to not work on it!

Tl;dr: Yes just hiatus, because I didn't want to admit that I needed to take a break and I'm super unorganized. Now I'm working on it again at a slower pace, but hopefully a bit more organized.

>I hope it returns someday; it's a lot of fun, and I'd love to see where it goes next.

I'm glad you like it, and as stated above, it sure will!

> I'm glad you like it, and as stated above, it sure will!

Awesome.

I'm astonished that you didn't come into this with a massive amount of worldbuilding already, and that you've improvised this on the fly so far, because the quest comes across as though you had this huge cohesive background that we're slowly and incrementally revealing, where everything fits together.
>>
No. 110701 ID: 616bfd

>>110697

That's what I wanted to do, and the minimal amount of planning I did at the start had that in mind. Technically, it wasn't 100% improvised, but all the worldbuilding I'd done was mostly not directly related to the story, such as creating the races/species in the world and the map (both of which are some of the 'retcon issues' I mentioned in my last post, I wanted to make a few changes but some things I said in the quest have already cemented them into place). Other than that, I thought up a few characters, some of whom didn't even have a name until a few updates after their appearance in the quest! (Lookin at you, Joe)

And probably the most drastic of differences is the purpose of the quest. Originally it started out as just a worldbuilding/creative writing exercise, where I'd take elements from all my random one-off creations in the past and form them into one setting. I like to to see how things connect, and I liked the idea, so I rolled with it, and wrote a few short stories set in this setting. Later, I discovered the idea of the 'Quest', and decided "Man, it'd be really cool to be in control of one of those", and decided to continue my creative writing exercises publicly. I also needed practice with my drawing, so it was a perfect opportunity to sort of get my ideas out there.

However, now after about a year, it's a lot more than simple writing exercises. I've created a whole story and plot with a mystery or two and everything, and now the purpose has changed. It's not just an exercise anymore, it's a real narrative that I have going, and I couldn't live with myself if I continued to half-ass my way through this.

Tl;dr again: I started out the quest with far lower expectations than reality has come to give me, and I'm moving to compensate.

PS: I wrote this on my phone in the car, so try to ignore any spelling errors

So Breakfast Quest has been on yet another hiatus, one which I somehow forgot to mention, because I've been having issues with my spine, and I needed a break from sitting over my tablet and drawing things so that I could heal. Just saying my back is back, and I'm getting to work again!
>>

This is excellent news. Thanks for the update!

>I'm getting to work again!

So yeah... That clearly didn't happen.

There was a big family event this past month, and I've been a combination of very busy, exhausted, or just not feeling up to working on it. And to put the cherry on top, my tablet has recently come under 'disrepair', so I'm working on getting that back to working condition. But I can't even work on the art now that I'm not so busy anymore.

So sorry for not getting any work done on this, even when I said I would. For now, I'd like to offer a compromise. I can still work on the story aspect of BQ, and just leave it without art for a while. While I feel like it has the potential to diminish the experience, it's better than nothing, it would allow me a break from the most time-consuming aspect of updating, and it'd help quell my own dissatisfaction with how slow progress has been coming. So let me know yea or nay to that idea

Alright well...

Depression and mental health issues still continue to be a thing, and I've unfortunately fallen into a bad place for the time being.

I've just gotten a new set of meds, hopefully I should see improvements within the next couple weeks. I'll continue breakfast quest when I'm able.

>>
No. 118726 ID: 339cf2

Okay, sorry for the abrupt ending here, but rest assured there will be more breakfast quest later.

On a more personal note, I'm doing a lot better with my new meds, and I'm gradually seeing improvement in my general mood and my will to do things. In addition, this is the last week of the semester, so I'll get a break from the stresses of school. Drawing and thinking up the story is still taking a lot of energy out of me, but like I said I'm improving gradually.

Look out for the return of Breakfast Quest in thread 2.
