Thinking about starting a quest, but I've never actually made one before.

What are some general tips to keep in mind? I've already got a basic flow chart for the major choices in the quest mapped out.

Since there are people out there who are able give far more helpful answers than I ever could, let me just drop this link:

Don't plan everything out ahead of time. Just have a solid concept that you think is interesting and which you'll still think is interesting in several months.

So, from what I'm reading, I could do a quest that is mostly text with minimal pictures. A textquest, if you would.

What's the general opinion on those kinds of quests? I think that would be the easiest kind for me to pull off, as I have no real artistic ability, and I love to write. I could always make little doodles in MS Paint, but chances are the best I can manage is stick figures. Maybe some basic layout of surroundings or maps.

I prefer MS paint drawings over nothing. I don't speak for everyone.

It's a tradeoff. Text quests are real hard to get into, but there's gravitas in pure text which is not present in ms paint stickmen...

Also stickmen suck. Draw box bodies, preferably of a wide variety of widths and heights between different characters. Body shape is very useful for identifying people and making characters stand out a bit.

Box bodies don't seem too hard. Noted.

Though some people may disagree, I think that MS Paint Adventures and especially Problem Sleuth are great example quests. The art style really evolves from start to finish, and there's a ridiculous yet awesome metaplot.

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=4 Here's a link to Problem Sleuth if you're interested.

Metaplot is really the most important thing in a quest to me. Having the world mapped out is key. You can have multiple results to each encounter, but having a clear idea of where you want your quest to go is important. A lot of the "start as silly thing in silly place" seem to go downhill quick.

The only complaints I have ever heard against MSPA is that it gets hard to follow.

Oh yeah, it gets real silly.

Maybe it's because I read it all in two days, but I didn't find it that confusing at all.
