I am thinking of running a few quests, I am not sure is we can spare the attention for yet another quest, or if I will truly have the time or energy to run said quest. But the theme I plan to elaborate and work on is the progression of history, the Mythos, and conspiratorial forces playing their secret games, just beyond the veil of public perception.

I expect to run through a few characters, but I do have some background, and character interrelationships already planned out. However, lacking a stylus as of now, I would be forced to update slowly.

My inspirations for this are games such as Eternal Darkness (including of course the Cthuhlu and Hyborian Mythos), RPG.net's Project: Long Stair, a Canticle for Leibowitz, and various modern mythologies.

I present to you the First Hand of Pawns to play. Some are fated for Greatness, some for Obscurity. On which would you cast your eye first? To which would you soonest whisper glory in their ear.

If you so desire I can offer more information on popular choices to aid this decision in the form of -Secure Redacted Files- but these may take a short while to bring together.

Who's the oldest? I'd love to start at the beginning of history and work our way forward.

But...the gentleman with the book, the shotgun, and the freakish, freakish eyes...he seems intresting.

And I want to see how you're gonna use the Long Stairs. I do hope you're going to use the body of SJGames work - the Cabal and the Illuminati are always fun.

I fear they were supposed to be spectacles, but it seems a line was lost or faded in the resizing and coloration.

As for the Long Stairs themselves, they are not the main focus of these stories, but their presence is notable, and at times exploited by various entities.

As for Steve Jackson Games, I hold a certain love for that company's products, I am at this time idly flipping through a Warehouse 23 paperback and will doubtless draw some inspirations.

The -Secure Redacted Files- themselves will be be somewhat like GURPS Stat sheets, with a few added, and sometimes, redacted pieces of information.

Well then gentlemen, you have been dealt what I believe to be a solid first hand. Whom would you first put in play?

It will take me a bit to put together some environments, but I do plan to see this hand played out before moving onward in a more 'regular' fashion with other (and maybe even some returning) characters.
>>

Its okay, Let us just say that I am not a Reaver or Weaver style updater, maybe more along Gnoll's speed (okay, maybe somewhat faster than that, but you get the idea), with a more serious tone.

I have to scan this shit at work, so due to holidays, I may be going somewhat, erratically, but I have not forgotten you gentlemen.

I should also consider procuring a rather less interrupt-able form of scanning/tablet.

Hey, allow me mention a few things:

First, I like the unique style of your art. It's refreshing to see something different.

Second, I'm fond of the Western Frontier setting and the background of the protagonist of which we got some hints. Shotgun pastor? Sweet!

Third, I have to say, it's a bit hard for me to tell wether you wait for a suggestion or if the update is part of a "cutscene" of some sort. Just my oppinion, really.

Anyway, good luck!
>>
No. 8030 ID: e024d0

>>317829
I don't generally do the cut-scene thing yet, something can be inspected or at least suggested at most any impasse. I will mark cutscenes as such.

The character may not take up that suggestion if they have a reason against it, but it helps me know what and where to draw next if there are at least comments.

Also, while shotgun preacher isn't really 'in tune' with the voices in his head, certain other characters will directly talk back and argue with you Muschio or Ridder style.

Especially if their sanity has degraded considerably. Bad Dog for example, you guys might have some fun talking to him.

Also, I think I am going to change Mr. Poor's first name to something more... sensible, I mean Tinnigal, what kind of parent names their son that? He's already bad enough off with his last name as is. Though, I could give him some ego problems fit better.

>Yellow: (wisper):"Erh... hello there 'voices' can... can you hear me? I'm a somewhat new at actually playing this game so... I was wondering how or really if you have any suggestions. I'm really just filling in for someone else. I mean I've seen you pull off some crazy stuff, but I didn't know you were actually watching, or listening... or whatever we are doing."

From the intro post:

>Black: "I went to some expense to allow you come here and play against me twice, I assure you that I plan to enjoy this game."

>Yellow: "You will lose, you always lost."

>Black:"But this time the stakes are higher, if you lose here, all your past gains were meaningless, at this table, I have the experience, I..."

I think we're seeing into Yellow's first game against Black now!

Okay... I know that CoC isn't a game that seems to get many players, but seriously where the fuck are the suggestions? My thread just sat on the first page for 12 hours without a damn post, as of now it's still postless...

If this shit keeps up I 'will' update using the most mediocre of possible decisions and almost everyone 'will' die in the most gruesome fashions I can find.

Is it my art? Is it the slow updates? is there no character connection? not enough fury? sex? violence? does my writing injure the eyes? does the character not troll or enrage the audience enough?

anyhow.. to make up for my late ranting.. have a mecha or something.
>>

It's neither interesting nor appealing. In short, you make grammar mistakes and don't do dialogue in a way that makes me give a damn, and the art is cruddy.

I don't like the theatrical production-script dialogue format that works as follows:
"Character #1: *is doing something* Words words words."
"Character #2: Blah blah blah."
I also really hate the asterisks enclosing phrases that tell what the character's doing.

The fairly frequent grammatical errors are also a turn-off for me. Call me nitpicky or whatever, but it gives me faith in the author when their writing is free of obvious stupid mistakes.

None of that stuff is helped by the art, which is drab and unappealing. Most of everything looks like it's tinted some shade of brown; or all the lines and color are blurred into each other; or all the lines look the same; so the characters look flat and don't stand out from their surroundings.

That's basically it for me.

Oh god why did I spend an hour on this

I sense some valid complaints, however in my defense:

The Script Style: only used for the Colors who are so meta to the story I had to indicate that their little sections were fundamentally 'different' from all the other characters.

Grammar: Mmmkay, valid. However, I loath typing in these little -chan textboxes. The lack of a post preview or edit function is also a hindrance (if completely understandable in the case of the later.)

The Art: My primary reason for even running a quest is to improve my artistic skill from it's current level of "doodled some in school, then didn't draw shit for 3-4 years."

Also, Nevada is (in parts) not much to look at aside from shades of dusty brown and dull green. Most quests don't even attempt full color (although that may be for the best it seems.)

I have been reading your quest and participating, but I'd like to offer you advice as well because I want more people to suggest.

There are a couple of things that are going to limit your suggestions no matter what. These are problems that plague me as well, and I don't think there's anything you can do about them:

Nature
Your quest is serious and has a (relatively) complicated plot. The more people have to think about what the suggest, the less likely it is that they will. I would guess that more people read your quest than you think, but don't suggest because they either aren't sure as to what is going on, or don't want to make a bad decision. There is nothing you can do about this.

Text-Heaviness

Whenever the text in the dialogue box is so long that you have to click "reply" to view it, people are less likely to read. Although some text-heaviness is going to be required, you should try your hardest to keep the size inside the size of the box. Even then, the longer the text, the less likely people will be to read and respond.

Solvable Problems

Art
I don't think most people realized that you started off with significant animated frames. Although your art is now digital, the original scanned and colored images looked ugly. It wasn't because of the quality of the art, it was because it was scanned and then colored.

Use sharp, dark lines to help your art stand out. If people can't at least get a general idea of what is going on from the thumbnail, they are less likely to click and read. I don't know if it's a compression issue or what, but a lot of your images are blurry. You also have a lot of extremely dark frames where it is hard to tell what is happening at all. You can indicate that things are dark without making it hard on the reader to see.

Plot

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm much, much more interested in what the human character is doing that what is going on in the "game."

the first Yellow segment was fine because it put things in perspective and revealed significant metaplot, I think these segments should be as short and infrequent as possible. I want to know about the mystery and adventure that the character is experiencing because it is more exciting.

Caveat
I've talked about getting a preview button for the text. I think this would help a lot of us out.

Bro, your art isn't going to improve much from doodling things in your imagination.

>Also, Nevada is (in parts) not much to look at aside from shades of dusty brown and dull green. Most quests don't even attempt full color (although that may be for the best it seems.)
Oh yeah the landscape is brown, woo hoo. Way to miss my point.

Even in monochromatic quests, you can usually tell what's going on because they focus the majority of detail; the boldest lines; the richness of color in the objects in the foreground.

See the attached image. The scene on the right is what your quest looks like to me from glancing over it.

If you are still scanning and coloring, then this method should help:

Completely desaturate the image, and turn the contrast all the way dark on the initial image. This will make sure your lines are nice and black. You will probably have to delete some little spots and dotlets but whatever.

Make a separate layer and set it to "multiply"

Color on this layer. This will make sure you don't have any white spaces or crap like that around the edges.

Done.

You should color on a separate layer anyway. If you are drawing the picture from scratch, then you can just color under your lines instead of setting a multiply layer.

Hope this helps.

Dr. Eric White is recorded as arriving at the 'Saint Franscis Home for the Young' Westishrire, England in 1903 while still a toddler. No mention is made of his background aside from the speculation that his parent may have been working-class Irish.

Though noted as being a precociously curious child, he was often found lost in daydreaming (much to the chagrin of his caretakers and later his teachers.)

Indeed it was believed that his somewhat slow and antisocial nature would preclude him from higher education, until it was noted that his frequent doodles in the margins of his work were unusually sophisticated and showed a very strong grasp of higher mathematical principles.

Due to an interest in the further development of these talents he was sponsored for a mathematics and physics degree and was well on the way to changing the face of applied physics when his life was flung dramatically off course at the age of 22.

While investigating an artifact belonging to a reclusive, recently deceased professor of theology and metaphysics he was forced into a conflict for his very being as a dangerous sorcerer attempted to swap both mind and body for his. Using an a device of his own invention he managed to escape, but not unscathed. His body had already succumbed to the magics.

Now in danger of mistaken identity with an 'assumed dead' heretic he fled to make a new life in America under the provision of the Church (who were quite willing to both cover up their error, and keep him as far away from England in case of any 'lingering aftereffects'.)

He has lived now for a decade in a body not his own with no home for more than a few months. Slowly working his way across the United States. The current Great Depression as well as the unique stresses of his experience has given him more than a few gray hairs in the current year of 1932.

Part of the reason Dr. White often has somewhat detached, introspective internal dialogue was I was riffing off the way Lovecraft writes all his characters. I interpreted it as him being just a bit insulated from his experiences and finds it hard to relate or retain proper interest in the world and people around him.

Note that this makes him forgetful and disorganized (he's already lost his toolbag, helmet and the Radiant Device) especially after he's been stressed, as well as limiting his perceptiveness. However, he is the most stable character psychologically.

Nobles nobbing about, plotting, politicking, backstabbing, trolling the peasantry, and perhaps even romancing in a pseudo-Victorian atmosphere.

Or I may run something a little less thought out and closer to earth, arena fighters and getten tactical. Perhaps even running through character builds like M&Ms depending on how brutal things get.

Some answers to puzzles we just passed.

Q: The Tower, was it avoidable?

A: The 'lighthouses' are akin to open plasma reactors made of pulp SCIENCE! and arcane wizardry. Throwing a stick of dynamite into the stream soon after if blew the floor out from under Fields would have caused a backlash to temporarily extinguish the Tower, the cables/chains would have held long enough for Clara and White to retreat over to their origional side.

However, they will pull, not going to kill anyone over not guessing how to disrupt a giant disinterested deathbeam.

Q: The Mummies and the Panels what's up with that?

A: The panels would have been able to open the door, turned on lights, a fountain ,activate holographic maps, and raise or drop the mummies all at the press of a few buttons. However, you also could have alerted security, flooded the room or any number of inconveniences.

The statue served as a 'manual override' for the doors, and the mummies would not have even been an inconvenience had Fields not opened and looted as many caskets as he could.

There was also some treasure and a trap hidden behind door 'b'.

The Feuerfeld linage traces its way back to a group of Swiss Pikesmen and Knights whose primary duty was the protection of a a certain castle in which a circle of sages sought to unlock and replicate what they claimed were the secrets of immortality.

However, a local witchhunt, combined with the aid of the Landsknecht and the growing irrelevance of training in the face ball and musket drove out the sages, alchemists occultists leaving their now jobless protectors to pick up the pieces. Fortunately they left behind some very interesting and profitable pieces.

Now with their own equipment and the Age of Exploration in full swing the Feuerfeld's dedicated themselves to the acts of acquiring even more power, of both the monetary and otherworldly kinds.

Elias Merchadel Feurfeld is the last of this line, his father having been a noteworthy archeologist and explorer, his mother of minor Austrian nobility. He tagged along on many of his fathers adventures until an unfortunate fall broke his leg and he was forced to stay at home for the next trip.

A trip his father never returned from. That was 3 years ago, and Elias, now 19 is desperately trying to hold together a nearly depleted relic trading empire as well as somehow justify or throw a heroic light on the manner of living he has inherited. It was both pursuits that brought him to one of the few remaining acquisitions of his family, the Seven Hills Silver Mine and the ruins underneath it.

Since apparently I am going to be drawing lots of Vehrimen (ie: 'not-burmicians') in my new quest I should probably practice some faces.

For 'furries' they are ridiculously hard to emote satisfactorily (although their hands and feet are so much easier.) I think it's the whole "can't see the mouths thing."

I can't believe I screwed this pic up when I posted it in the quest. I forgot to erase the coloring from Lucidia's sleeve when I moved her left hand. This is the pic more as it should have been.

I thought I was past that kind of derp. Then again, drawing this frame was herp after derp as I initially drew out a much livelier looking scene on the white background, only to realize as I finished inking that I had no layer underneath to color and had to trace the whole damn thing over again.

In other news in my most recent posts I've finally taken to just typing my post out in Word before copy-pasting just to keep all my tags and syntax right

The Happenstance Repeater is an Air Compression Weapon firing roughly 8 rounded slugs in quick succession, one at a time, or all at once (using the forward trigger.) Reload is a bitch however, as the greased projectiles have a tendency to slide forward out of the barrels if the weapon is pointed downward too long.

Artandin Artisans and subsidiaries of the Artandan family manufacture and equip the AAA-Nueluck(R) as a 'Needle Hunting Instrument' and thus not banned under the 'Injunction Act against Subtle and Devious Manufacture". However, The Dragon Thanes have attempted several times to outlaw it's nearly silent revolver design citing the understandable popularity with assassins.

The Empyl Dress Lance, as well as the Silver Serpent Wheel-lock are only two of the myriad designs incorporating the use of handcrafted caseless rocket rounds, the favored weapon of Verhimen marksmen due to the widely customizable load of each shell. Of course the undeniable stylism and intimidation effect of a battlefield full of screaming, piping or sparking projectiles when making war on 'less industrious peoples' is perhaps another design choice.

The Behebaluth Fire-lance is a positively ancestral weapon to the Verhimen people, they possess no records of describing ranged warefare in which such a weapon was not known or used. Stick Grenades of various types, the most popular being Incendiary or merely Directionally Explosive, are mounted in the head of this weapon and triggered from the haft. Beyond this most basic similarity the design varies wildly, with some being more akin to long maces, and others resembling more halberds.

Feeling pseudo-medieval. However, most of the Verhimen city-states are a bit more Renaissance given that they regularly use rifles. The real thing holding them back from the industrial revolution proper is a severe lack of fossil fuels (aside from peat.)

They have electricity but most of that is water powered. Fortunately the climate is temperate rainforest or wetlands.

Species: Tentatively Labeled "Hobgoblin."

Morphologically Humanoid w/ standard male female dimorphism (ie: height, muscle density, child-bearing hips, breasts, ect.) NOTABLE: Resemblance to well-documented phenotype "Goblin."

Xeno-Mammalian, Homeothermic, indicated standard room temp too cool? May consider topside transfer and holding.

Sapient, Civilized, Technological (see: Recovered Artifacts Log 650C) Artifacts indicate at least steel and machine processing,

Utilize Functional Hyper-Geometrical Technique (see below.)

Eyes: Reflective outer-layer lends a glossy 'blank" appearance. This, as well as notable brow, hairless skin, sebaceous glands, and other adaptations indicate a bright, and likely hot/dry, natural climate.

Male, young adult, trained warrior? Tech disorientation should keep containment easy for a few weeks.

Female, late adolescence, notable contrast to male in having a singular discolored eye, as well as lacking the large ears of the male. Scans show massively deformed skull and brain structure to allow for this eye and even cursory examination reveals crude scars where the ears would be (female circumcision? occult sign? criminal penalty?)

WARNING: Considerable hypergeometic training on top of natural talent, use genelocked dampeners and at least one hypertechician or sensitive on hand for all interactions.

Doubt I will ever actually use Vidder in a quest, maybe a really random encounter or reference, but not as a whole species.

I would like to make a /quest/ bestiary sometime, could be a fun document to make, get a lot of anatomy practice in (I could defiantly use it.) Someone did draw all the various species of women in /quest/ naked and to scale at some point, but I was thinking something a bit more analytical with less gender restriction.

So, I will probably start a new chapter of Before the Storm pretty soon (but don't expect too many updates this week becasue I still have finals.)

However, I don't really want to just 'abandon' First Hand, as poorly drawn as most of the older art is. Still, I'm unsure of how I'm going to handle it, I really planned for all the characters in First Hand to be disposable on a whim, it was the place they were exploring that would become the setting for yet another quest.

To be fair that one is probably an elite bodyguard or shock trooper. Something like this is likely more typical.

Camouflaged, lightly armored hit-and-run w/ enchanted beast support. It was mentioned in chapter one that it's rare to meet a Farie who would call themselves a 'soldier' per-say though almost all of individuals have a few decades of militia training under their belt.
