So, i kinda realized that since i'm probably going to make more and more short quests, i should have a discussion thread instead of loitering questdis with a dozen discussion threads.

So, here a questdis to discuss rules or ideas for the shortquests (similarly to what happened with Wild Wizard Tournament)

And of course, i wanted to use this questdis to talk about ideas for future shortquests or on things you might want me to run as quests.

And nope! I learnt about the existence of that game when i showed a wip pic in chat and people linked me to a video of that ahahah.
The inspiration for the style comes more from japanese chibi rpgs and castle crasher. The view for the dungeon comes from a mix between old beat em, mario rpg and a tabletop game ruleset that i am using for the quest.

Character sheet for Pint-sized Paladin.

P.P. abilities are

- IT'S JUST A SCRATCH!: cost 3 mana - Character regains 1d6 HP

- STUN!: cost 5 mana - Your next attack will stun the target for d6-2 rounds. It can't be stacked on the same target and will only refresh the duration. As long as a creature is stunned it can't act in its turn.

- CHAAAAAAAAAAAAARGE!: cost 2 mana. You charge in a straight line (horizontal, vertical or diagonal) until you hit an object or a monster. Then you attack for 3d6 + the number of square you charged through

Character sheet for Relatively small Rogue.

R.s.R. abilities are

- Poison dagger: cost 3 mana - Your next attack will poison the target for d6 round. While poisoned the creature will lose 1 hp per round and will have suffer a -2 total to all its attacks.

- Quickstrife: cost 3 mana - For the next 3 round your speed is doubled. And you can break your movement between action. (move two squares - attack/spell - move 4 squares, for example)

- Blink: cost 5 mana. You immediately teleport to the last room you visited.

What a powerhouse. Doing that much damage means the Paladin could have oneshot most of the enemies the wizard ran into.

Why is the wizard worse at dps than the paladin!? We didn't run into any heavily armored enemies, either.

>>97041
As I mentioned in the main thread, that free ranged attack means the rogue can clear rooms without risk. However, considering it's only 1d6+3 it will do an average of 3 damage to lightly armored enemies, and require some luck to do damage to enemies with more defense than that.

The Rogue looks like he'll have a huge problem doing damage to armored enemies, and will be forced to use poison against them. That isn't so bad I guess. Blink seems useless though, considering you're going to be near the door anyway.

>It's [Tis] just a scratch
C'mon, get old timey, knight.

This one seems ridiculously overpowered compared to our spell-caster. Pally's ranged attack is cheaper and more damaging. Getting a line of attack is largely trivial, and the only thing that balances it is that using it leaves Pally open to counterattack instead of at range. (Which matters not against single enemies, or if they're already dead).

If you plan on having them party, TW needs a buff to not be useless, or the Pally needs a nerf.

Would the +1 ring we looted stack with stun, to make the duration d6-1?

>>97041
The abilities are useful if the rogue's soloing. Poisoning, running away, and using distance to buy the turns to cast prep spells and plink away at things.

He or she's at somewhat of a disadvantage if they're going to be partied up, though. Wasting turnings on prep and poison isn't very impressive if the others can just kill everything before it makes a difference. And blink means leaving your buddies to die! (Might be useful, if you can get them ressed?). Although quickstrike poison attack could be good on bosses, especially if the pally stunlocks them?

>What a powerhouse. Doing that much damage means the Paladin could have oneshot most of the enemies the wizard ran into. Why is the wizard worse at dps than the paladin!? We didn't run into any heavily armored enemies, either.

Alright, let's see how we can fix this!

i guess the first thing would be to fix the attack and defense values of every character

What do you think about

T.W.:
ATK: 2D6-2 (making attacking with T.W. in hand to hand more risky)
DEF: 2D6 (I'd prefer not giving T.W. any malus in defense)

P.P.
ATK: 2D6+2
DEF: 2D6+2 (definitively more tanky than the other characters, but still unable to tank and outDPS the others)

R.s.R.
ATK: 2D6
DEF: 2D6

As for DPS, I thought about reducing the mana cost of SHOCK. Making it Cost 1 would make him rely more on it for damage.
BONFIRE will be turned into BURST OF FLAME. turning it into the aoe effect you had with the scroll. The damage will be also become 1D6 and 1 damage per turn for 3 turns.
SCRY. Do you guys 3 mana would be good? with the reduced cost of SHOCK the manapool won't drain that quickly.
I don't mind the idea of letting the players choose the spells, but it would make things more complicated in my opinion? At least, just at the beginning. I can imagine several comments over several comments discussing which combo is better.

>Would the +1 ring we looted stack with stun, to make the duration d6-1?
No, the ring of rage only ups damage, not effects. I also thought about making it a straight up D3, that way if anyone roll low you won't have wasted mana and an action.

For the paladin, the charge would change into a 2D6+2+squares that you moved through. It would be the best way to deal with ranged-quick monsters or heavy armored enemies.

>But wouldn't Blink make him leave his teammates behind? Or is it one of those abilities that effects the whole team? Because that would be good for quick escapes if it effects everyone!

Blink only works for R.s.R. because my idea for the short quest was to have solo runs with single characters (at least for now, until i manage to find a balance for all of them. It's also the reason most of the monster weren't really threatening. if i make a 3 characters run, there will be some 3D6 Atk - 3D6 Def monsters with abilities, for example).

On retrospective, Blink becomes really useless since you already get a burst of speed from the second spell already. What about making the third skill his ranged attack? costing 1-2 mana and allowing him to attack (2d6) at range (+poison in case).

>With a ring of exchange and his heal, Pally could fully restore hp / mp in between every battle. (Barring bad luck and/or no margin for error).

That would have like a 50% chance of being good.

and we get to another point i noticed. If you guys had good first rolls, you'd stop immediately. And instead spam if you get low results.
To balance that out, i would like to introduce a MIN/MAX numbers of rolls, so to have a better rounded average. 3 rolls min and 6 max is what i thought. what would you suggest, in case?

And lastly, i thought about introducing INITIATIVE!

or better, at the beginning of the "game" you'll roll a d6 (-1 for P.P. and +1 for R.s.R.). It will last for the rest of the dungeon run. Every monster will have a different initiative, and will act after or before the player depending on who has a higher initiative. Initiative will pop up with SCRY too.

Also i wanted to ask, do you think the grid work well as it is? or should i use a more isometric map?
>>
No. 97067 ID: 3d2d5f

>That would have like a 50% chance of being good.
Actually, your odds are better than that. You only lose if you roll a 1 or a 2. Anything else is breaking even or making profit. So you only lose 1/3 of the time.

>Also i wanted to ask, do you think the grid work well as it is?
Yes, the map is fine.

1d6 is an average of 3.5, so if the heal spell cost 3 mp, it would have a profit of .5 over time.

I suggest making it 1d6-1, but will always heal at least 1 damage. Then the average is 2.667, which ensures some loss. Alternatively, just make it 1d5, which is an average of 3. Or you could make it a more reliable spell, and have it be 1d6-1 minimum 2, which is an average of 3.

The Paladin's new offensive capability is appropriate I suppose. Making the TW have a *cheap* armor-piercing attack comparable to other characters' attacks is unique enough to work too, and the mana savings mean scan costing 3 mp is okay. BONFIRE is quite good and worth casting in this new incarnation. The Rogue having a 2d6 physical ranged attack for 1 or 2 mana is okay, I suppose. Having the Rogue be a debuff/physical-ranged role is good. I wish Poison was a bit more reliable though. Having it last 4-6 rounds would make the Rogue a very viable solo character instead of mostly being support. That would mean he could poison something then run away while it dies.

The simplest 'fix' for abusing the heal spell is just not to give the pally a ring of exchange. Which is trivial if they're adventuring solo, and he won't be partied with the tiny wizard / have access to his loot.

>>97066
Maybe leave shock at 2mp, not 1? Although, if it's his basic attack / weakest spell it makes sense for it to be cheap.

If we'd had more of an mp margin, I would have suggested scanning the shopkeep. Shopkeepers usually have overpowered stats to discourage trying to murder them for their goodies.

>spell choice
Maybe the wizard finds or unlocks more spells as he progresses, and players have to choose which spells to bring on a dungeon run? So you have to choose your build. (Only so many spell slots / buttons).

Pally looks more balanced. Although balance doesn't matter as much if they're all supposed to be soloing- it's not 'wrong' for different classes to be easier / harder, or to be forced to adopt different playstyles based on strengths.

>point I noticed. If you guys had good first rolls, you'd stop immediately. And instead spam if you get low results
Yeah, we did that on purpose. If it's allowed it lets you have much better chances on things. Your solution seems alright. The only thing I have to say is that 6 rolls for def feels a bit low. That many for attack is fine.
I think the rogue and paladin initiatives should be a bit more extreme if we go for it. (+2,-2)

New bonfire is good, scry cost the same if shock is lowered is fine.

Lessened attack for the wizard is fine, but I'd rather go for 2d4 than 2d6-2. It ends up being the same average,(3.5*2-2 and 2.5 * 2) but normalizes the results. (instead of max 10 min 0 it'd be max 8 min 2.)

Maybe have poison be 3d2-1 (average 3.5 max 5 min 2) instead of d6? or heck a simpler value of 2d2 (average of 3, max 4 min 2) I'd be alright sacrificing average for reliability. Again normalizing the values of attacks to make debuffs reliable is a good thing in my mind. Thoughts?

If we do get them together in the same team, would there be combat bonuses for them standing next to each other? Like how combat works in Fire Emblem Awakening. For example: If T.W. and P.P. were standing next to each other, depending on how well they get along with each other, they'll have a little attack and/or defense boost. And there's a small chance that if one of them attacks, then other will jump in and attack as well. And an even smaller chance that if one of them gets attacked, the other will jump in and block the attack.

Meh, this probably asking for to much. I'll understand if you can't do any of this. I just thought I'd mention it, because for some reason this quest reminds me of Fire Emblem with dice rolls. Even though it's actually closer to D&D, my brain just says FE.....my brain is weird like that.

It was the name of Konda's or Manhammer's father or grandfather? A character from one of Konda's crystal orb animes? A legendary hero?

He's green?

He's a noble?
>>
No. 119744 ID: 2efe4b

Could it be the name meaning? "Patrick" comes from a word meaning "nobleman". Intended as a reminder of how he should behave himself? His dad seems the type who would do something like that.

I doubt it's related to the answer, but in japan, one of the characters that would be used to write the surname "konda" means "rice paddy". Paddy <= Padraig <= Patrick. Coincidence, surely, but amusing.

Also dubious: "Patrick" can be shortened to "Pat", making "Pat McManhammer", which could feasibly be misheard "pat my man hammer", making him sound like a pervert whenever he introduces himself casually.

Nope.

One of those is close to the actual answer!
>>
No. 119778 ID: 6cc25a

Since "rick" means "a stack", Patrick could mean "pat a stack", or more blatantly, "tap dat ass".

Or perhaps it simply refers to Layton laying in the hay with Konda.
