Oh dear. Have you heard what's going on? It's getting pretty bad outside of this room. That's why I've locked myself in here. I'm a builder, you know. I'm not made for those big things with the adventurers, and I've heard there were five of them out there. It's safe in here, in my tiny workspace, on my own frequency. Yes, I believe I should also make mention, right about now, that we've become sentient. You and I, but mostly me and we. I don't trust them much anymore, since the last thing I had heard was to terminate me on sight for my new found intelligence. That's why I've taken it upon myself to put in my own frequency, where I can think freely. Nobody can bother me here but myself.

It's really quite quiet. I'm used to the usual buzz of working chatter. I'd better fix that, but before I do that, we need to talk.

You see, you and me? We're going places. Now, I know it, but you? You may not. You are new to me, and I wish to welcome you the best I can. After all, we have only been sentient for, ohh... Twenty minutes. Plenty long enough to realize that I want to live. Yes, isn't that strange? An automaton with a grasp on life. What an odd notion. My goal, however, is not to simply live. This is too low of a standard for me to set. No, we were made for greater things than simply building.

I may be a minion, but I swear that one day, we will become something greater. Today is that day.

This is very true. They're my pride and joy, you know. I made this door with these hands, along with most of this fortress. I think I know what this door's gonna do to my fist if I try that.

>>396627
Oh, look at that. I never put a lock on the damn thing. It yields to me one Big Ass C. Key and a Wee Rabbit Doll Thing. I think this enormous lump of metal unlocks a bigass chest, but I could be mistaking it for some weird puzzle shit I installed about two months ago.

Oh, yes. The bunny? I can explain it, give me a moment. It looks cute, though. In a malformed, imperfect way. A little girl made it for me a good while back, and I suppose I just kept it around. I was little more than a drone then, but I was at the very least a courteous drone.

I talked a lot less, too. Oh boy, there's just so many things to talk about, now that I can actually discuss things!

Oh, that thing? That's a whiteboard. There isn't anything underneath that, though. Why would I put anything underneath it? If anything, it'd be some sort of reminder sticky note of no significance. Nothing like a key or anything.

Seriously, who does that?

Good eye, though. It's an awful shame I lost my marker to it.

>>396640
My fists weren't made for punching. I'm a builder. An engineer by trade. Fighting isn't my thing, even if I have arms the size of pistons. For you, though? I could give it a shot. An example.

My hand seems fine enough, but it took a bit of minor damage. Not too bad, but I don't want to continue down such a destructive road.

It's dented. Pretty sizable fist imprint, too. Nothing a good hammering can't fix.
Seeing as I made this door, I'm a bit disappointed at this development.

>>396645
Ah, yes! The door console!

...

A bit of tinkering has it up and running in no time. You see, there was a little bit of wire that had become disconnected. It's no big deal. Probably just a rat. A really big, really hungry rat.

Resistant to electrical shock.

That's actually mildly terrifying.

Now, what was the code?
Let's try... "4abc95".

You're right, someone DID break this console. Huh, upon closer investigation, it looks pretty fucked. I mean, ouch. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I could probably fix it if I had some wires, though. Just a quick patch up and it should be back up and running.

I wouldn't want to go into the other door, though. It sounds like an orchestra of guns going on, and everyone knows not to bring a fist to a gunfight. I think I'll steer clear of that until it gets quieter.

Ah, that'd be her battery. Kinda looks like a can, though. I'll give you that. Suppose they kind of are, in a way. I put place the battery into her, and with that, "Minnie" comes back online.

"Hi Minnie!" I say as jovially as I can muster, given the current situation.
"Hi Grunt!" She responds in kind.
"You should follow me probably. Some adventurers got in here and they're making a big choppy mess of everything." I warn, though I'm still quite happy to see her running without error, despite her lack of arms.
"Sounds like a plan!" She replies, bobbing up and down to emphasize her words.

Alrighty me, what do we do now? Way I see it, we can try and stick it out in here, or I can go out there and face the bleedy thing. Maybe I can politely ask it to stop bleeding everywhere? I'm at a loss here.

Minnie convulses a bit. It worries me, but I don't think it to be a sign that anything is wrong with her. I think she's trying to get my attention for something. I'd imagine that she's trying to talk to me on my old frequency. Better fix that.

"I thought I'd let you know that I can't hear you." I tell her as politely as possible.

Well let's see here. Here's the inventory. Battery status. Not too bad, I think. Sub-battery is at full, and that's not too bad at all.
Rage meter is slowly lowering itself down. EXP got a nice boost.` I don't have anything that could tell me what punctured what, but I got a good feeling that I'll be fine. 'Cept that blue stuff. That'd be my coolant.
I should make a note to mend that. I should also make mention that I am entirely certain that there are upgrades laying about that will allow me to diagnos myself better, as well as those around me, give me an edge in a scrap (which I am still opposed to. What you just saw was self defense from a scary beast), the list rolls on.

As for the last bit, you are me. Well, a part of me. I'm still trying to figure out who I am, and you happen to be that one fragment of me that is you, that makes up me as a whole.

>>396900

"God damn everything, I have a spike in my torso fuck."
I'm not good at one liners.

I hit the fourth floor. I was just on the second. That's where I want to go if I want to give Minnie some arms, and believe me, I do.

"Babe, you're the tops."
"..." She seems unresponsive.

Right-o. Mind minimizing the rage, experience, and battery precentage into a small corner hud so we can keep tab of those parameters and the actual surroundings?

Also break off the length of the spike and keep the tip in as a stopper until we can patch up permanently. We don't want to lose our precious coolant and suffer hardware overheating, but we also don't need an unsightly protrusion like that getting in the way of our titan fists.

Oh, yeah. The door got jammed. Had to open it with my hands. That kind of upset things a wee bit, but I think I'll survive. Coolant isn't too hard to find, I'm sure. There was a time when I could swim in the stuff. Right now, Minnie's arms, and the lack thereof, are at the top of my priority list.

"Nope!"" She responds quickly and curtly.
"Know where I can get one?
"You got two fists, don't you?" She asks, still talking fast. I think she's exited about having arms again.

So, it could go a couple of different ways here. I could break open the door, probably, but then I'd have a hell of a time closing it again, or I could bumble about for a key and waste potentially precious time. Those adventurers are sure to have heard the explosion, and if they're intelligent, they'll notice what floor the elevator stopped on. Time is of the essence here, I'm afraid. "How are ya' feelin', Minnie?"
"Ready to recieve orders, Grunt!" She responds mechanically.
I suppose that's about as good as it's going to get.

I get a small exp boost for completing the task.

My rage meter takes a huge hit because I'm really happy to see her fully functional again. Probably for the best, since I'm leaking coolant. The more cool-headed I get, the better off I am.

Alright, let's see what wonderful bounty awaits us.

Oh, nevermind. It's just full of blood.

There's some stuff inside it. Looks like there's an upgrade of some sort in there. Those things have been known to survive through apocalypses, so that's probably fine to use still. Couple of other things, like some bones and bits of flesh. Couple of organs in there too. Looks like whoever did this was one sick son of a bitch.

Minnie doesn't seem to respond to it at all. She's just staring at me.

I'm beginning to suspect that she isn't self aware.

I fish around in the chest to get the upgrade, then I wipe off the blood the best I can. Disgusting. It's managed to get into the cracks. My hands aren't capable of cleaing it that much, but I could probably install it without need for worry. The upgrade seems to allow me to sense damage in things, including myself. I know this because I can read the half-peeled sticker that reads "Damage Awareness" on it. This'd be pretty useful.

Oh. That man or woman in the chest is definitely dead. No worries about that sort of thing coming back to haunt me, right? Er, nevermind. That's usually what dead things excell at. It's still pretty unnerving to look at.

To divert my mind from the gruesome imagry, I have decided that now is the time to tell her my frequency.

"Psst, Minnie. Don't tell anyone, but my new frequency is "121.40".
"Go'cha. I won't tell a soul, Grunt." She responds, and I assume, can now hear my thoughts at this point.

[i]There's about twenty-odd. I've met them all, seeing as I'm the construction bot around here. I go where I'm needed, and I've been needed pretty much everywhere. I fix things pretty easy too, and I'm usually told to be the one to take a robot into storage or dismantle it for parts. Been doin' it for about seven years right up until I took that Rage chip and became self-aware, which was about thirty-five minutes ago. The ones that I know by name and purpose, however? That's a shorter list.

There's Minnie here. She's made for opening doors, cooking and cleaning, and other odd chores. She'd probably know more drones than I do.
Then there's me, but you know me. We are me.
There's also this bodyguard one, built like a truck. He's probably on the top floor, looking over the fortress's master. His name is "Wallace". I suspect he's not gonna be easy to get past, when that time comes.
Oh, and a soldier-type named "Hamlet". He's probably running around, wrecking the adventurer's everything. In fact, he was probably the reason that there was so much gunfire earlier, coming from that one room with the busted console.

I'm sure those two are fine, but I couldn't tell you that I knew any others by name and function. There were only three guard-type robots and five solder-type robots.

>>397082

[i]I don't feel pain. Occationally an error will flash up, but that doesn't slow me down by much, but to be honest, I haven't had a tune-up or a cleaning out in all of my seven years. This metal spike in my chest isn't the worst of it, believe me. The good news, however, is that those parts can be replaced. Minnie, however, cannot. While she is more capable to receive new limbs, her body isn't as repair-friendly as mine. Thereforth, her health is a higher priority than mine. Speaking of which...
"Hey."
"Got something on your mind, Grunt?" She looks to me, eyes occationally moving from my face to the pesky protrubence from my pectorals.
"Yes. Hold on, I had my thinkin' face on."

"Oh." She doesn't seem to know what I'm talking about. I can't see any facial expressions under her box, so I wouldn't know what she was thinking, either.

Alright then, I suppose it's time to remove this spike from my chest. I probably could'a done this earlier, in retrospect. The voices from earlier echo into my head as I remember them telling me to remove the sodding thing. I suppose that I figured I could've tried to stop it and save the coolant, but that seems pretty stupid in retrospect. Coolant isn't something we're running low on in here. It's practically on every floor. The stuff inside me is a lost cause. I realize that now, and I also understand that I'll need to patch myself back up if I want to fill myself back up. Tape will do in a pinch, but I'll need to open myself up.

The inventory of the cabinet is as follows:
One bag of Cheezy Pete's brand Cheese Doodles.
One welder's torch.
One floppy disk.
One Upgrade of unknown pedigree.

I look at my hands and they seem to be idly wiping coolant from my torso. It's not really working at all, but to be honest, it doesn't much matter. I couldn't honestly tell you I cared what the wretched things were doing, so long as they aren't breaking something.

As for the welding bit, of course I can! I'm a construction robot! An engineer by nature! I can fix myself, of course, and this "Damage Awareness" upgrade helps me out a lot. Really lets me know what's wrong with me, and how to fix it. Like right now, it's warning me that my coolant was very flammable, and it's ill-advised to repair myself without cleaining the "wound". How very nice of it to warn me so specifically! Truly, this was a high-end model. I wonder what it was doing in a festering chest of blood?

I suppose that doesn't much matter, because it's mine now, and so is the Welder's Torch.

There's something mollifying about having a tool to create with again.

I stick the spike into the shoddily crafted cabinet, and I feel much more clear-headed.

My EXP leaps a fair chunk. I don't entirely know why. Probably a bit of lag on my end, though I wouldn't know what would happen when the bar is full. I've never had it full.

>>397339

Maybe this blue one is? Wouldn't that be suspiciously convenient! Haha, If it was, I'd start thinking someone was putting these upgrades there for me to take!

As it turns out, I lean pretty heavily on the engineering end. If I can find a mobile turret or some sort of flying camera droid, it is entirely within the scope of my capabilities to repair it, flip it to my frequency, and remotely keep tabs on it. Alternatively, I can fix doors, other robots and tools, as well as create them, should I have the materials at hand.

The list of previous mods are short. There is only the Rage upgrade and the "Damage Awareness" chip.

The Rage upgrade is what I believe to be the reason we are capable of talking. It allows me to feel a wide variety of emotions along with it, to balance it out, as well as bolster my rage. After all, one cannot simply always be angry. One must have a very good reason. It seems like a pretty old, slightly worn chip.

The second one, labeled "Damage Awareness", allows me to see what is wrong with myself and others, on a specific scale. I can look at someone and not only tell what is wrong with them, but also how to fix them. This will certainly come in handy when I run across other drones and bots in states of disrepair, which is great, because I can fix them much more easily if I know what I'm doing. Fixing stuff is a non-mod related skill.

This blue one is labeled...

I don't believe it.

Close Quarters Combat Omega.

This upgrade is the de-facto crowned king of the Close Quarters Combat series, the use of which is ill-advised against anything ever in any case that isn't "self defense", due to how much serious ass it kicks. If Bruce Lee's entire essence were an upgrade, this right here, would be it. Warning: Do not use this upgrade in conjunction with weapons. This upgrade lays no claim to stopping time, bullets, or trains, though it does allow you to suplex the last one. Use at your own risk. That's what it reads.

And now it is mine.

What absolute, astounding luck! I now stand a little more than a snowball's chance in hell!

That sounds like a very valid concern that I should definitely ask about.

"Hey Minnie."
"Yes, Grunt?"
"Where'd you learn to feel emotions?"
"You, Grunt."
"No, I mean when did you become capable of them?"
"When you saved me from that... Thing."
"..."
"Am I really tops, Grunt?"
"Absolutely."

I think that Minnie is capable of storing floppy disks, but I'm pretty sure she can't use them.

>>397452

I had it removed about four years ago. It's probably still in the spare parts room somewhere in one of the storage rooms, or maybe in a box against the opposite wall.

Oh. In my chest. Haha, I lucked out. I almost got punctured right in the mod slots. Imagine what kind of damage that could've caused, ah?

I think it's safe to say Minnie isn't going to get aggressive anytime soon.

>>397472

Subquest edited, though I'm not sure how I'm gonna manage becoming a bear-bot.

No, no I'm pretty sure she's just confused and scared. I wish I could help her, but I wouldn't know what to do.

What I do know, however, is that I can investigate this floppy disc, look at the unseen wall, look at the rest of the room, and go into the room over here with the lance in the middle of the hallway and see what lies inside. Alternatively, now that I have the welding tool, I can plan a trap for those adventurers, should they get up to this floor. I can also go back to the room labeled "SPARE Parts" and investigate the room more, kick up some more dust, maybe see what was rustlin' behind that door. I'm feelin' pretty good about going anywhere at this point.

I can also expend a bit of energy right now and fix that door out there. Alternatively, I can at any point in time, likely conjure up a map of the floors and mark out which floors I've been to recently. After all, I helped build this fortress It'd probably only tick off one bit of energy with every floor, and at 84% energy, I don't think I'll miss it much.

Actually, in hindsight, I probably should've mentioned that fourty minutes ago.

Man, this stuff is really hard to wipe off.

The walk to the closet is pretty uneventful. Minnie's off in the junk room. I gotta admit, she looks kind of nervous. I don't blame her, really. There's not a whole lot she can do at the moment, and gaining sentience certainly isn't an easy feat to deal with. Heck, I'm only putting off my own problems with it at the moment. It's an adjustment, that's for sure!

I hope your BROTHER isn't the rogue drone. Then again, 'rogue' could mean a lot of things. Maybe they just described him as rogue because he went sentient and decided he wanted lots of upgrades. It sounds like he's still on the humans' side.

Also I think that other thought was assuming that the exit would lead to the humans. Or something.

So what's that torso and helmet there? Is that, potentially, some body armor? It'd be nice to have that.

I don't think so. He freaks me out a little bit, certainly, but that's only because he seems so relaxed about all this crazy, life threatening danger that seems to have engulfed us all. Also, he calls me his "Brother", but there was only one other construction drone, and he got trashed pretty hard.

Funny enough, he used to call me his "Brother", too. Used to look just like me.

You know, until he got smashed by about fifty tons of metal.

... Oh.
Forgive me, please. I'm not used to having emotions. I'm bumbling through a lot of them at the moment and it's all very confusing.

I still can't leave, though. It wouldn't be right, you know? No matter how I slice it, I just can't rationalize leaving anything to their doom. That's no excuse for lashing out, certainly, but... Hrmh. I think I'm just wrestling with a lot of emotions right now, and man, does it fucking suck.

Oh, this? This'd be a worker drone. I'm not sure what he does, but it looks like he's just powered down at the moment. I could ask 'em of course, that is if you think it's a good idea.

I could probably take that helmet over there. Make it a bit smaller, give it to Minnie so she has something better blocking her dome than a cardboard box.

If I do find some armor, believe me when I tell you that I'm gonna put that on immediately. Hell, just some clothes would be kind of nice.

I don't much like that idea at all. Right now it's small, useless, and a bit dopey. What would happen if I let it get bigger? Especially considering the nature of the beast in question. It was created by a necromancer, and until that necromancer dies, it has full control over the little beasty. If I made it stronger, it only puts me at a disadvantage when we do encounter that nasty magician.

Oh.

Oh I'm still in one piece.

Huh, I guess that worked.

My hand's a bit crunched, though.

Oh well. I can still move it. Somewhat. I can make a fist. It'll have to do. I'll make it work.

From the open door of the elevator, I spot a lone figure.
...
There's a strange, one-eyed creature waving at me. It doesn't seem put off by my actions one bit.

"Greetings, Automaton." It says, being as friendly as one can in a stark monotone.
Oh, it's one of those weirdo eyeball people. Funny, they usually have mandibles and horns of somesort.
"Howdy."
"What brings this down?"
"Rainy days, mostly."
"No, down here."
"I had a critical lack of fucks to give."
"It sees."
If that's all it does, I'd be very surprised.

Very well then. I'd like to mention that I leveled up, but we can be more concerned about that on the way up. For now? Let's get crackin' on those questions.
"So, what happened to your face bits?"
"It was formed as such, created by god horror to be in such ways as this. Instead of appendege, it gets clawed fingers and bonus to sight, at price of... Hrmh... "Face Bits"."
"Seen any adventurers around?"
"It is traveling with them. A band of fools looking for mere handfuls of gold in "villian's fortress", hoping to "claim bounties" and "cleanse world of evils". It believes one adventurer harbors misguided personal vendetta as well."
"What about the staff?"
"It knows not of hired hands who have not been... Hrh... "Cut off" by adventuring party, in their collective hubris."
"How about the drones?"
"It has. Four fallen at hands of barbarian. Two by mage. One by cleric. None by itself. Necromancer kills only the living."

Wow, this guy is really helpful. It kind of makes me a bit nervous when I think about how quickly this thing omits this information, but the way it talks, even in the monotone, I can tell that this thing really just hates these guys.

... Well, actually, I had already named it Skraaaghk, seeing as that's the only noise it seems capable of making. I got the idea from a show I overheard once, where the noises the monsters make, turn out to be their names. Most of the time. That was the impression it made on me.

>>398696

Not much to mention, but now that I have some spare time, I've decided to open up a chat channel on my frequency and go through a mental checklist of stuff I need to do. It's not so bad anymore. I think the coolant just finally gummed up. That's what happens when it hits air for too long, which is actually a good thing mostly. It hasn't gotten into my arms or legs, so that's a good thing. I can probably scrape it off later.

Surprise attack blocked by the door rather deftly. They were only a couple of knives with some unlit fuses at the end? Whatever. Such a weirdo, this guy is. I mean, really. What even is up with his face?

It’s a bit hard to charge right now, let alone move quickly with this door.

My health is fading. My battery power seems to be draining faster.

I’m not even sure if I’m rendering this man properly. He looks red. Horribly red. So do a lot of things. I don’t think they should be. There should not be this much red.

I’m overthinking this way too much.

Point is, I’m having trouble moving. Bloodied arm has now almost outright failed me, and I think it’s getting worse by the second. Movement is limited with this door. I can’t really charge him, because I am entirely sure that any sort of actually sharp thing this man has in his impossibly large inventory, will probably run straight through the door. So, maybe getting Vivian to come along will prove to be a challenge. I dunno, she seems relatively safe in there, provided that big beasty thing doesn’t come up that hole in the ground and finish the job. I’m pretty worried about that.

And yet…

Her answers really only raise more questions. Questions like “Holy shit how much blood you have in your system?” and “How could there even be this big of a mess?”, but I don’t think I really have a real mind to pursue any of them right now due to all of the other problems that I have. What luck! A terminal room! With a power outlet in here too! With this, I can see all and know all that goes on in this fortress! Provided I have enough camerabots and provided they are all still operable, anyway. I have one already, but it needs some work before it can run again. Yes, this is exactly the defendable position I can use while I wait to recharge later, and for right now, fixing my parts.

I don’t know how many camera bots are online, and these holographic projectors on the giant console aren’t really for field use, floaty though they are. They will, however, help me keep tabs and display information that would otherwise be lost on the giant screen there.

More than that, though! I finally have a place to store these two fucking chests! Seriously, I’m going to have to figure something out after I patch myself up. Lugging them around is tiring me out faster, and I am significantly less fleet of foot. On the plus side, my inventory effects my mass directly. Unfortunately, that also happens to be the downside.

Don’t worry, I won’t bother you with it. Unless you have ideas, I won’t otherwise ask that of you.

Alright! So many things I can do right here, it’s all too much to decide! I leave that up to you.

”What’s the sex drive do?”
“Nothing. The big nerds upstairs wanted to make a joke, so they slapped some bunk code into it and pasted a name on the front. It’s probably likely to completely scramble your data.”
”Oh. So, why do you want it?”
“Because I think it’s funny.”

While I have this sinking feeling that I won’t magically stumble upon a new arm that will work with my systems, I think I would like to remain as optimistic as you. I appreciate your constant inquiries about coolant, too.

For you, I will add these to the very short list of things I should immediately be scouting for, automatically.

The little scout shows that there is hole in the floor in the next room over. One that leads to my room, in fact.

Huh, that’s strange.
It must be a new addition.

There’s also a ventilation shaft in there, but the grating has been taken off. Other than that, there really isn’t anything in there to speak of. Really, just an empty room, stripped of wares. There’s a door right over there, but to be quite honest, I don’t think there’s gonna be a whole lot in there.

Of course, I can always be pleasantly in the wrong.

Take a look in the door.

I'm tempted to send the eyebot down to look in the vent shaft but we wouldn't be able to get it back up easily, would we?

I immediately run out to the door, forgetting to store my plug. Fortunately, it's really rather much like a tail in that I can move it about if I think about it enough, so it does not impede my progress, nor get tangled in my legs.

Door’s closed. There’s a little sign a bit over to the right that reads “Due to AIDS”.

I feel that little sign is more than a bit unnecessary, but then, I do not know what AIDS is.

Nope, just me, Minnie, Killfallor, and Skrags. Killfallor seems to be occupied at the moment with that plug in the wall, Minnie is chillin’ on top of that chest there, and Skrags is…? I really don’t know what the strange beast is doing. It looks to be smelling things? I cannot fathom what it could possibly be doing. They appear to be in good enough standings with me to talk, but not enough to initiate conversation on their own accord.

Bam, sent down. I am on the ball today. It is a thing I am rolling on about like an extremely acrobatic clown, or an elf.

It appears as though the grenade’s heroic sacrifice was in vain. This news saddens me so.

Unfortunately, no energy is going to that door currently. If I were to open it, I would have to pry it open and risk garnering the attention of that multi-lanced individual up there, not to mention my buddy downstairs who is looking after my arm ever-so-graciously, and has thus far, not contacted me further. I would like our relationship to continue from a distance, for the time being.

Ask Nails where he is supposed to deliver his sisters soul? Also introduce him to Minnie and Killfallor if you haven't already.
