This is the story of a world forged and fueled by Song. A land of magic and mysticism and wonder. But every story has a beginning, and every story has an end. So we shall start with a story about both. The Tale of Five Songs.

In the beginning, there were five spirits of living music.
Nysta, the beatific and happy.
Hrya, the melancholy and loving.
Oosa, the fun and joyous.
Farnle, the angry and loud.
and Sorfan, the Conductor.

Together they played in the void, happy to weave a song that went nowhere. But one day, Oosa made a suggestion.

"We have no audience for which to play. Our melodies go unrecorded and are fleeting. We should make an audience to play for, one that will dance and play and revel in our song!"

And Sorfon nodded sagely. He picked up his baton, tapped it twice, and lead the First Song of Creation. The world formed of the Void, soil springing from his conductor's baton as he wove unheard melodies and conducted the land itself. Water flowed next, filling the deep valleys and oceans of the world. He smiled at his creation, for it was indeed a work of art. A perfect sphere, without flaws.

And so he gave the lead to Nysta.

Nysta looked at the world, and while it was beautiful, it lacked color.
"Oh, but I cannot decide what color these wonderfully shaped lands shall be!" she fretted. "Oh, I know! I shall have them decide for me!" she said, and began to sing. So happy, so full of life was her voice, that plants grew where it touched. She sang as the world turned, blessing almost all of it with verdance and beauty save one place, which she delighed in at any rate for its beautiful golden sands. "How lovely it is!" she delighted, looking it over. "If it only had a name..." she shrugged and shook her head, and turned to Oosa, who smiled and walked up to the planet.

"Oh, this shall not do! Still we have no audience!" he huffed. "No matter, I shall create a splended array of tastes!"
And so he placed his bow upon his violin and played. So clever and witty was his song, that the animals that heard it rose and stretched and smiled and danced. The ones who danced were the Humans, the Elves, the Lizardfolk, the Dwarves, the Halflings. But others heard the song, and did not want to dance. Oosa pitied them, but gifted them, as well. The Kobolds, the Orcs, the Ogres, and myraids others did not join the dance, and while it saddened him, he knew that if they all liked it it would be no fun. He smiled, looking over the world.
"Yes, yes. This is fine. What do you think, Hrya?"

"I think it's... wonderful. Too wonderful."
She looked over the peoples, and they were too happy for her liking. "They know not the preciousness of their existence. Thier love is fleeting, for their lives are eternal, and love has no consequence."
So she too sang. So sad, so loving, so full of melancholy was her song, that one of the lands simply ceased to exist, and a town vanished from the world. People everywhere began to die, but it was not without hope. People found themselves falling in love that lasted, having children. And so Hyra was pleased, for without death, you cannot know the true beauty and fragility of life and love. And so Hrya turned to the last of their number, the great and boistrous Farnle.
"What do you think?" she asked gently, and was swept aside to make room.

"It's boring!" he roared, and pulled out his guitar. "Needs conflict! Anger! Rage! Blood and war!" he sang and played, and the peoples were incensed. They made war, drew borders, made pacts and broke them. Nations formed and cities rose and fell within years. It was an age of conflict and terror, a time of fear and desperation. But his song did not last forever. As it slowly died, he smiled. "That's better." he said. "I've had my peace. It looks great."

And so they played and played the song of fate and history, for all the people to live through and enjoy. All their parts in equal measure, all their songs in perfect harmony. And the world was good.

Of course, this is not what our story is about. It's about a great and noble hero, one who shall save the world five times over before he is finished, one who will break and soothe hearts with his word and his song.

A great and...

And...

And drunken, sleeping hero.

Fantastic.

>freaky stories from your childhood that are inevitably going to be proven true at the worst possible time
Well, there's Farnle, but he's less a bogeyman and more an immortal god.

>or prophecies that mention you?
Good heavens, no.

I'm just the poor son of a noblewoman who seems to think that a "Maaaaa-aaan" (as she says it) didn't need an inheritance at all, and instead left it with her two daughters. I tried to make my way in the world by song, but... They broke my instrument. And thats only the start of my problems! I ran from town with a mayor and his men on my heels for wooing his daughter, and now I'm in this hastily-constructed shack in the wilderness, drinking the alcohol I stole bit by bit and making pennies singing for the dwarves up north.

And now I'm hearing you.

Inspiration!
Mordecai has learned Song Of Thundering Valor!
This rumbling roar affords the normal benefits of a Song of Battle, halved, and to your enemies, it offers only pain. The Song shakes the earth in a small area around the target within sight, dislodging stone and earth edifices that are not shored up to withstand it.
As a special quality, it does not need an instrument,. It also does not require a Full Compliment, but benefits from there being one.

I feel... I feel the power of anger, indignation, and power throb in my throat!

"So how did your guitar get broken?" Farah asks as I fetch the guitar from my home.
"Long story."
"We got time."
"Fine. I was playing in town once, usual performance, you know. Actually, it was one of my best, thinking back. Lots of fun, lots of money in my hat. So I did what occurred to me. I went into the audience and pulled a girl up to dance with me."
"Oh?"
"Yeah. I've done it once or twice before with the girls who worked there (fine ladies, really, but they have their boys, as I found out) and nothing went wrong."
"So what happened this time?"
"Well... Her boy was in the crowd. And... he was a half-orc."
"Ooh." Farah winces.
"Yeah."

Wait, which town should we go to? I'm still wanted back home.

Oh, and the repairs should cost about 2 gold.

Practice. Dwarves can't possibly harm each other with their bare hands, at least not easily. They are made from the stone of the mountain they are born in. It's... complicated. I'll tell you about Farnle, Oosa, and the Great Dance later.

I enter the store.
"Hoi there, dancy boi! How're yeh!"
"I'm fine, Pterry."
"Goodtaear. Anything you're lookin' fer today? I stock for humans, you know!"
"Yes, and we all thank you heartily."
"Then buy something, hurfhurfhurf."
Before you ask, they all laugh like that.
From left to right we have...
Healing potions, which can be splashed on wounds to seal them, or drank to promote speedy healing and nullify pain. the drinking function is more subtle and long lasting. ~50s after bartering.

Dew of the Mountains, a special drink that grants one more energy almost instantly. ~90s after bartering.

Mindflask, which clears the mind incredibly well and smooths casting of complicated spells. Probably about 80s after bartering.

And...
"Pterry, what's that last one?"
"Ah, dat be Iceheart, my own brew hurfhurfhurf. Not meant to be drunk, boyo, it freezes things like the first snap o' wintah, gaurenteed! We use it to make bridges over larvar quickly. Also to stem larvar leaks. A gold a bottel!"

Packing the potions into my bag (they cost me 2g total, despite my best efforts to talk him down) I make my way back into the main hall. There's a commotion at the bar. I move in quickly, to find, well...
It looks like a barfight, but by the time I arrive, there's only one man left in the bar. The rest are outside, some ten or fifteen men. I pick my way across the mess, to sit myself next to him. He smiles, turning to face me on the stool.
"Miss Farah went upstairs during the minor disagreement I had with some of the people here." he says, grinning. "You must be Mordecai. I'm Fredrix."
I shake his hand and take a seat beside him. He's quite well-built, bald, and covered in interesting tattoos, some of which glow.
"I'm a Transmutist." he explains when he catches my eye on them. I notice his hands end in long claws, as well. "Those fellows were quite unreasonable to push to that point." he adds, smiling a catlike grin. "So, while Farah rests, why don't we have a chat."

"Oh, that! It was quite a clever ploy, I think. A simple dice game we were playing, you see. A six sided die, high roller wins. I bet some pocket change, but the other fellow took me too seriously, so I decided to teach him a lesson. He bet quite a lot of money on a single roll, you see, using, silly enough, a loaded die. He rolled a six, of course, then began to take my money. I told him, nay, and picked up my own, saying, I can make this into a push. I told him I knew he was cheating, and then went on, that was alright, so shall I. Him, thinking stupidly that one cannot roll higher than a six on a six-sided die, sat back down, and raised his bet."
"How...?"
"Easy. I changed one of my nails into a long claw, and... Well, here."
He places one... no, no, two halves of a die on the surface, smiling that strange grin.
Incredible. The Farnle ploy...

"Farah said something about knowing someone who could fix my guitar?"

Legion. That's who we are. Our origins are in the souls of the dead. We are a great mass of spirits reforged into a single entity. The guy who did that to us is kindof a jerk, even though we went on to save the world multiple times because of it.

Hey, do you know about how there are like... lots of different universes out there, not just your own? We came from another one of them. We've been cursed to wander the multiverse, never staying anywhere for long.

Now, originally we were able to guide only those who have a hand in the fate of the world, but we don't know how things work here. I'm going to bet that you are going to help with a big event of some sort though.

There's nothing wrong with them. Just the way they are. The ones that migrate to our lands breed into more muted versions of themselves until they look like people with small horns or tails or miniature wings, and those folks are just greyscale mutes who happen to like the dark. We call'em Teiflings. They're naturally gifted with Magic, but... well, they can't produce song. At all. We are legion for we are many, a demon of the mind is what we are. we have come from beyond the world, beyond all song, and even beyond the silence. via our machinations we have prevented the destruction of our home thrice, and upon the third time we were cursed. never to know a home again could we. arriving to a world in danger to save it before being set forth to drift once more.

anyway, the minds of the unprepared are so easy to get into, it is hard to tell if we are not wanted before entering so sorry about that.

Certainly.

My style of casting is known as Voiceless Chanting, which uses mental imagery and vocalization to power spells. While the effects of the school are highly potent, it takes a long time to finish a single spell, roughly a minute for a simple one, up to ten for a more complicated one. This is because most spells have chants that are paragraphs long.

The other styles are Wand Crafting, which imbues small objects with simple spells that can last for years (which Freddy uses) and Voice of the Weave, which is simple, easy to use, and the middle point between the power of my style and the ease of Freddy's.

Each discipline has its own followers and styles, further modified by the Schools of magic. Your School and your Discipline generally determine your spells and power.

Normally, I prepare Mage Armor in the morning, and keep it on all day, but Protection from Fire and my other spells are more situational. However, I can do this: Sometimes I prep a Redirect at Rank 3 just in case.

Listen, what you do is your own decision, but think for a minute. There may only be that one condition, but that doesn't mean there isn't a bigger price. Why does it want us out? We're harmless, helpful and possibly useful at time. The logical reason: We can't be under it's influence, thrall or control, that's why.

You aren't going to just get rid of us, you may very well lose yourself. But if selling your soul is worth a power trip for you, then have fun. We wouldn't miss you.

Its voice changed...

"What do you mean by terrible?"

"Others may grow to fear you. Still others will adore you." it sighs. "Legion, I sensed your arrival here. And I know what you are. What you represent. You are an Edge Gaurdian, like myself. You have little to fear from me, but I took this power of your most beloved host to lessen your fear of me. It seems it was not entirely effective..."

There was a bit of trouble with it and autonomous functions of the body, but I've since worked those out.

Besides, while I don't wholeheartedly trust you, you haven't really done anything to harm me, so... Well, I don't mind you here. Company's company.

Well, maybe you can help me out. I have two blank wands here. Wands can store five charges of a spell. I know four wand-compatable spells.

1Fire Orb: A one-foot wide, tall, and deep orb of fire is launched from the tip of the wand in a perfectly straight line. The orb can start fires, but is not explosive, nor does it carry any force.

2:Stop Poison: This spell delays the effects of any poison for four days, and is activated upon touching the tip of the wand to one thus affected.

3:Knock: Unlocks a door and throws it open with a large amount of force. Works similar to Fire Orb.

4:Create Simple Mechanical Minion: My most advanced spell: Gears and springs and metal plates pour from the wand and form into a simple mechanical minion, about three feet tall and weighing about 150 pounds. The minion can excel at a single skill specified at creation: Fighting, Building, Unlocking, Disarming, or Carrying.

Knock and Stop Poison.
Fireball is easy for other people to cover, and being combat-centric means we will either use it early on and be left without it, or be stuck in the situation where we're sitting on a pile of fireballs throwing peas at a giant crab out of fear that there will be an even bigger giant crab just around the corner. All and all, a rather poor choice.

Stop Poison is essential. We have nobody who can cure poison. Considering how fast poisons can act, getting poisoned would be a death sentence without it. This is a vital tool.

Knock seems a bit specific up until you realize what you can do with it. Barred doors count as locked, giving us the option of wedging a door shut so we can blast everything on the other side. Even better, creating a collapsible door and frame allows us to create a concussive blast anywhere at any time. This is all in addition to letting us through locked doors with little care for traps or wards, which is helpful due to our lack of lock-picking, trap disarming, and dispelling skills.

Automatons are too limiting; anything they can do we can either do or learn to do, and judging when to use a charge would be very difficult.

Beyond that? Consider the consequences of somebody stealing a wand. Fireballs or Automatons would be very bad for our health, while knock is only a situational risk and stop poison is nearly harmless.
>>
No. 191828 ID: 6a5a08

I agree with Seven. Knock and Stop Poison for reasons stated in his post.

Can we recharge the wands later on if they run out of juice? Also, can your shapeshifting (the whole claws thing from before for example) allow you to defend yourself if that does happen?

If not, it may be wise to become an Arcane Warrior.

They won't help against trapped and/or warded doors, though, and the obvious combat utility is going to encourage us to use them for that. With knock, however, it's very situational and we'll be less inclined to waste charges.

Besides, the automatons only last for an hour; hardly worth bothering, really.

You would rather have 4 charges of a spell that busts down doors than 4 charges of Create Robot that can unlock doors OR fight things OR carry things OR build things?

Remember, he can choose what kind of robot we get when he summons it. If we wanted to we could reserve all 4 charges for opening doors and it would STILL be better, because each robot can open more than one door.
